Fishing activities produce discards that need to be reduced. Apart from the production of fishmeal and fish oil, other alternatives to manage this discard fraction are possible. High‐added value bio‐compounds (such as gelatin, collagen or fish protein hydrolysates, among others) can be extracted from the previously discarded fish biomass and its by‐products. While it is clear that these valorization strategies will produce economic benefits, they also will cause an impact on the environment of variable magnitude. Therefore, an eco‐efficiency assessment is necessary to discern which processes are most suitable for planning a valorization strategy. Within this type of wasted organic material, biomass from cartilaginous fish offered additional valorization potential, since other compounds such as cartilage or chondroitin sulfate can be obtained. The environmental impacts of the different valorization schemes implemented and tested on a fully operative real marine biorefinery located in an important Spanish fishing port (Marín—NW Spain) were quantified using the life cycle assessment methodology, while the benefit of the proposed systems was estimated as the gross benefit. The results obtained indicate that the extraction of high value‐added bio‐compounds is generally more eco‐efficient than the established process of fishmeal production, although its environmental performance is worse. Nevertheless, these environmental impacts could be reduced by optimizing and scaling‐up the production processes and the associated equipment, especially focusing on the energy and water consumption of the plant

Imprinting chondroitin sulfate (CS)/silica composites with Pb(II) and Cu(II) cations wasexplored with CS of bovine and different fish species origin. The process was based onthe assumption that particular arrangements of the linear CS chains in aqueous solution,induced so as to accommodate cross complexation with the cations, would be embodied intoa tridimensional matrix created through an organoalkoxysilane sol‐gel scheme. The presenceof Cu(II) in the synthesis of the composites did not result in the production of significantlystronger Cu(II)‐oriented binding arrangements, and therefore, the imprinting was not success-ful. Inversely, for Pb(II), the materials obtained exhibited a“memory”effect for the Pb(II) ions,expressed in the observation of stronger (13%‐44%) binding as compared to thenonimprinted counterparts, and increased selectivity (1.5‐2 folds) against Cd(II). The imprint-ing features observed were dependent on the CS source. However, it was not possible toidentify, among a set of their properties (carboxylate and sulfate abundance, percent ofdisulfated units, 4S/6S ratio, and molecular weight), any that correlated directly with theobserved imprinting features. The augmented selectivity provided by the cation‐imprintingprocess may be advantageous in areas such as analytical separation, remediation, purification,sensing, and others, particularly in those cases where a certain cation is of special interestwithin a mixture of them.

Over the span of a decade, genetic identification methods have progressively exposed the inadequacies of the seafood supply chain, revealing previously unrecognized levels of seafood fraud, raising awareness among the public, and serving as a warning to industry that malpractice will be detected. Here we present the outcome of the latest and largest multi-species, transnational survey of fish labeling accuracy to date, which demonstrates an apparent sudden reduction of seafood mislabeling in Europe. We argue that recent efforts in legislation, governance, and outreach have had a positive impact on industry regulation. Coordinated, technology-based, policy-oriented actions can play a pivotal role in shaping a transparent, sustainable global seafood market and in bolstering healthier oceans.

An isoelectric point (pI) calibration kit containing fish muscle parvalbumins was prepared and tested for its suitability for isoelectric focusing (IEF) in the presence of 8 M urea. The pattern obtained by urea CleanGel IEF consisted of nine bands covering the pI range 4.96—5.64. This range is relevant for species identification of heated fish by urea IEF. The kit may also be used for native IEF in the low pH range, as demonstrated by running an extract made from the kit together with water-soluble fish muscle proteins on Servalyt Precotes 3—6.

Changes in available lysine and protein digestibility which take place during thermal processing of canned white tuna with olive oil were evaluated using a steady-state procedure. Kinetic parameters were then calculated by means of weighted nonlinear regression and the jac!+ procedures. Good agreement was found between predicted and observed values. The resulting kinetic equations can be used to evaluate, design and optimize thermal processing of tuna in oil.
