Virtual vignettes, including scenarios with virtual children and their clinical information, were used to assess participants' pain perception and management. The virtual children, created from real face photos, varied in age (young/old), sex (boy/girl) and facial expressions (smile/grimace). Participants rated perceived pain scores and selected management choices for eight virtual vignettes, which were randomly presented. The Korean version of the Paediatric Nurses' Knowledge and Attitude Survey was completed along with demographic information.Both paediatric nurses and nursing students rated pain scores lower than the actual pain scores reported by virtual children. Nurses rated higher pain scores and accordingly selected more medication doses compared to students. Beyond pain‐related knowledge, the facial expression of the virtual child influenced pain rating and medication choices, while age and sex had no effect.Nursing students were more sensitive to the facial expressions of virtual children when rating their pain compared to nurses. Future studies should explore how paediatric nurses' clinical experiences impact their assessment and management of child patient pain.Paediatric nurses' knowledge of pain is inadequate, necessitating ongoing education in pain management. Aim: This study aimed to conduct a meta‐synthesis to explore the experiences of paediatric nurses in communication with children. Method: We conducted a meta‐synthesis review, following the outline proposed by Sandelowski, Barrosso & Voils. Our search encompassed six electronic databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO (MEDLINE), Web of Science, SAGE, and Wiley. The Primary keywords used were "nurse", "child", "communication", and "qualitative". We included qualitative articles in English within the field of paediatric nursing between 1990 and 2023. Initially, 1980 records were identified which reduced to 1339 references after removing duplicates. Subsequently, we assessed 112 full‐text articles for eligibility and 14 relevant studies were ultimately included in our review. Quality appraisal was conducted using the Critical Appraisal Skill Programme checklist with no study being excluded based on quality criteria. Data were synthesized using the qualitative thematic analysis method. Results: The data analysis yielded three themes and seven sub‐themes. These themes include swinging between triadic and dyadic communication, applying a hybrid of communication methods, and influential factor in communication. Conclusions: This study highlighted the significance of establishing a balanced approach between dyadic communication (nurse and child) and triadic communication (nurse–parent–child) in paediatric care. Paediatric nurses emphasized the simultaneous use of verbal and non‐verbal methods to enhance effective communication. Additionally, identifying the influential factors in communication can aid in developing and improving nurses' competency in communication skills within paediatric departments. Implications: Understanding the communication process and the factors that influence it can be instrumental in equipping paediatric nurses with enhanced communication skills in their practice. The actor–partner interdependence mediation model was used to validate the mediating role of dyadic coping in the relationship between family resilience and psychological adjustment.This is a cross‐sectional study.A total of 318 parent–adolescents dyads were recruited from three paediatric hospitals in Wenzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai city, China, between June 2022 and August 2023. The parents had a mean age of 41.62 years, and the adolescents had a mean age of 12.66 years. Participants independently completed a self‐report questionnaire assessed family resilience, dyadic coping and psychological adjustment. Data analysis was conducted using the actor–partner interdependence mediation model.The findings suggest that in the actor effects, family resilience directly influenced psychological adjustment, and family resilience is related to psychological adjustment through positive dyadic coping. In the partner effect, parents' family resilience influenced adolescents' psychological adjustment through the parents' positive dyadic coping. Similarly, adolescents' family resilience influenced parents' psychological adjustment through both parents' positive dyadic coping and adolescents' negative dyadic coping. Additionally, there was a partner effect between parents' family resilience and adolescents' psychological adjustment.This study demonstrated the importance of developing effective dyadic interventions based on family resilience or positive dyadic coping strategies to improve the mental health of adolescents with chronic illnesses and their parents.The mediating role of dyadic coping in the relationship between family resilience and psychological adjustment among adolescents with chronic illnesses and their parents was demonstrated. Aims Design Methods Results Conclusion Implications for Profession and/or Patient Care Reporting Method Patient or Public Contribution This study aimed to explore the correlation between artificial intelligence (AI) literacy, AI anxiety and AI attitudes among paediatric nurses, as well as identify the influencing factors on paediatric nurses' AI attitudes.A descriptive, correlational and cross‐sectional research.This study was conducted between January and February 2024 with 170 nurses actively working in paediatric clinics in Turkey. The data collection tools included the Nurse Information Form, the General Attitudes Towards Artificial Intelligence Scale (GAAIS), the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Scale (AILS) and the Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale (AIAS). To determine the associations between the variables, the data was analysed using IBM SPSS 28, which included linear regression and Pearson correlation analysis.The study indicated significant positive correlations between paediatric nurses' age and their AIAS scores (r = .226; p < .01) and significant negative correlations between paediatric nurses' age and their AILS (r = −.192; p < .05) and GAAIS scores (r = −.152; p < .05). The GAAIS was significantly predictive (p < .000) and accounted for 50% of the variation in AIAS and AILS scores.Paediatric nurses' attitudes towards AI significantly predicted AI literacy and AI anxiety. The relationship between the age of the paediatric nurses and the anxiety, AI literacy and attitudes towards AI was demonstrated. Healthcare and educational institutions should create customized training programs and awareness‐raising activities for older nurses, as there are noticeable variations in the attitudes of paediatric nurses towards AI based on their age.Providing in‐service AI training can help healthcare organizations improve paediatric nurses' attitudes towards AI, increase their AI literacy and reduce their anxiety. Aim: To determine the association between nurse and institutional characteristics and perceived professional nurse knowledge and self‐efficacy of reporting child abuse and neglect. Design: A sample of N = 166 nurses were recruited to respond to the Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (RSCAN) survey. Methods: A multiple linear regression examined whether nurse characteristics and institutional characteristics were associated with the two RSCAN survey domain scores. Results: Perceived knowledge of a workplace child abuse and neglect protocol was associated with the knowledge subscale. Education and child abuse and neglect expertise were significant predictors of the self‐efficacy subscale. Nurses with a master's or higher degree and those who identified as being either forensic, paediatric or Emergency Department nurses, had less perceived institutional barriers to self‐efficacy of reporting child abuse and neglect. Conclusion: This study provides a preliminary insight into the institutional barriers and facilitators of nurses as child abuse and neglect mandated reporters. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: To encourage innovative education and collaborations to support nurses as fully informed child abuse and neglect mandated reporters. Aim: To determine the incidence of pressure injuries from medical devices in children. Background: Medical devices can cause pressure injuries on skin and soft tissues. Design: A prospective, descriptive study adhering to STROBE guidelines. Methods: This study was conducted in the third‐level Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of Ege University Hospital in İzmir, Türkiye between April 2019 and October 2019 in Türkiye. Patients aged between 1 month and 18 years with medical devices were observed for pressure injuries using Braden scales and a specific monitoring form. Results: In this study, we followed 522 medical devices applied to 96 patients. The three most commonly used medical devices were the ECG probe (21%), the blood pressure cuff (16%) and the saturation probe. Out of the 522 medical devices followed, 36 caused pressure injuries (6.8%). Conclusion: The incidence of medical device‐related pressure injuries was found to be high. Effective training and implementation strategies need to be devised for paediatric nurses to prevent pressure injuries associated with medical devices. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The results of this study reveal that pressure injuries related to medical devices are an important health problem in paediatric hospitals. Aim: To examine the effects of spousal support and parent–nurse partnership on caregiver burden of parents of children with chronic disease. Background: With the trend of increasing the global number of children with chronic diseases, the parental caregiver burden has become increasingly prevalent. Design: Cross‐sectional study. Methods: The study participants included 115 parents of children diagnosed with chronic disease at a general hospital in South Korea. The study duration was 4 June 2021–30 April 2022. Self‐reported measures included the parent–nurse partnership scale, the Korean version of the Parenting Alliance Inventory and the family caregiver burden scale. T‐tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical linear multiple regression were conducted using IBM SPSS version 26.0. This study followed STROBE guideline. Results: Parental caregiver burden was significantly negatively associated with spousal support and parent–nurse partnership. Factors significantly influencing caregiver burden were parental alcohol consumption; child's inherited metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, disease relating to haematological tumours or kidney disease diagnosis; child's health perceived as poor by parents; child's dependency perceived as high by parents; hospitalization recency; and low spousal support. These factors accounted for 65% of caregiver burden. Conclusion: Parental caregiver burden was related to spousal support and parent–nurse partnership, but the primary factor affecting caregiver burden was spousal support. Relevance to clinical practice: The results highlighted the role of healthcare professionals in educating parents of children with chronic diseases to facilitate spousal support and have implications for nursing and community‐based interventions to reduce parental caregiver burden. Furthermore, they underlined that policymakers and other stakeholders should pay attention to the parental caregiver burden through government‐based, family‐centered strategies. Aim: To develop a nurse‐led model of analgesia to manage post‐operative pain in the surgical neonate. Design: A four‐round e‐Delphi study was conducted from March to December 2022. Methods: An e‐Delphi method was used seeking a consensus of 70% or greater. Fifty‐one experts were invited to join the panel. Members consisted of multi‐disciplinary healthcare professionals who work in areas associated with neonatal care. In round 1, 49 statements relative to neonatal pain assessment and management were distributed to the panel. Panel members were asked to rate their level of agreeance on a Likert scale from 1 to 5 (1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree). Ratings equal to or greater than 4 represented agreement, 3 indicated uncertainty and 2 or less disagreement with the proposed statement. An opportunity for free‐text responses after each statement was provided. This iterative process continued for three rounds. In the fourth and final round, the completed model of neonatal nurse‐controlled analgesia was presented along with a further opportunity to provide feedback on the final version. Results: Four rounds of statements and voting were required to reach consensus on a model of neonatal nurse‐controlled analgesia. The model consists of criteria for use, over‐arching guidelines and three separate pathways based on an individual baby's pain assessment scores, need for pain relieving interventions and time‐lapsed post‐surgical procedure. Conclusion: A comprehensive model of neonatal nurse‐controlled analgesia, applicable to the Australasian context, was developed in collaboration with a group of neonatal experts. Impact: This study provides a multi‐modal family‐integrated model to manage neonatal post‐operative pain. By providing nurses with increased autonomy to assess and manage acute pain, this model has the potential to not only provide a more responsive and individualized approach to alleviate discomfort, but highlights the integral role of parent partnerships in the neonatal intensive care. Aims: Missed nursing care (MNC) significantly affects patient safety and quality of care. It is a widely used concept that has been studied in different settings, but research in paediatric care is quite limited. Therefore, this descriptive cross‐sectional study aimed to report the prevalence, patterns, correlates, factors and predictors of MNC in paediatric care units in two central European countries. Design: A cross‐sectional comparative study. Methods: Data collection was carried out between June and November 2021 using the MISSCARE Survey‐Pediatric. The study included 441 registered nurses working in paediatric care units in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics in the SPSS 25.0 statistical program. Results: Almost all nurses, 92.7% of nurses missed at least one nursing activity during the last shift. The most missed care activity in both countries was the promotion of neuroevolutionary development, and the most prominent reasons were labour resources. MNC was weakly but significantly correlated with nurse experience in the current position and was predicted by the country, nurse education and overtime hours (p ≤.05). Differences in prevalence of MNC and reasons for MNC were identified based on several variables (p ≤.05). Conclusion: The assessment of MNC in paediatric settings is often a neglected area, although the prevalence in this study was moderate. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: Nurse staff shortages, as a global problem, have many impacts on patient outcomes in the delivery of nursing care. However, there are also many factors that can reduce the prevalence of MNC. More research should focus on a closer examination of these factors that involve hospital and nurse variables. Aim: To explore the experiences of partnership nursing among nurses when caring for children and young people with long‐term conditions, and their families. Background: Partnership nursing is promoted as a positive model of care among paediatric nurses, where shared roles and decision‐making, parental participation, mutual trust and respect, communication and negotiation are valued to create positive care experiences and enhance patient outcomes. Little is known about how nurses use partnership with both the patient and the parents in this triad to deliver partnership nursing. Design: A qualitative systematic review followed Joanna Briggs Institute meta‐aggregation approach and has been reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Methods: A comprehensive systematic search was conducted in seven electronic databases. Studies were assessed according to a pre‐determined inclusion criteria. Qualitative findings with illustrative participant quotes were extracted from included studies and grouped into categories to inform overall synthesised findings. Methodological quality assessment was conducted. Findings: A total of 5837 publications were screened, and 41 qualitative studies were included. Three overarching synthesised findings were identified: (1) Using education to promote feelings of safety and support, (2) Partnering to develop a strong therapeutic relationship and (3) Optimising communication underpinned by shared decision‐making principles to deliver individualised care. Conclusion: Nurses demonstrated successful partnership in their practice, but focused on developing dyadic nurse–parent and dyadic nurse–child partnerships. Future practice development that creates a three‐way triadic partnership may aid therapeutic relationships and shared decision‐making. Implications for clinical practice: Clinicians can reflect on how dyadic partnerships (focusing on the child or the parent) may exclude opportunities for coherent care. Further exploration in practice, policy and research as to how nurses determine child competency and child and parent level of engagement in triadic partnership may improve the potential of meaningful shared decision‐making. Purpose: A model was hypothesised by integrating two theoretical models: the compassion satisfaction‐compassion fatigue and empowerment models. This study aimed to assess the extent to which this integrated model can explain the relationships between paediatric nurses' burnout quality of life, perceived patient safety and work‐related variables during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Background: Nurses' burnout is negatively associated with quality of life (QOL) and positively with patient safety. Several theoretical models were introduced to explain burnout determinants and outcomes such as Golembiewski, Munzenrider and Stevenson model, Leiter and Maslach's process model, and Lee and Ashforth's model. However, few models described burnout in relation to QOL or patient safety. Methods: A sample of 225 paediatric nurses responded to questionnaires about burnout, QOL, adverse events and work‐related variables. Compassion satisfaction ‐ compassion fatigue and empowerment models were integrated into a single model and tested using structural equation modelling analysis. This study was prepared and is reported according to the STROBE checklist. Results: The final model explained 65% of the variance of burnout and 37% of the variance of QOL. The work‐related variables (co‐workers' support, job satisfaction, satisfaction with the monthly salary, participation in continuous education and exposure to violence) are predicting paediatric nurses' burnout and quality of life. Conclusion: The Compassion satisfaction ‐ compassion fatigue ‐Empowerment integrated model allows for assessing the different paths in the relationship between work‐related variables and burnout. Relevance to clinical practice: These results might be essential for nursing managers to develop strategies that improve nurses' work environment and minimise their burnout during COVID‐19 pandemic. Aim: The aim of this study was to understand the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) healthcare providers' (HCPs) experiences and needs during their own past, present and desired pregnancies. It has been reported that HCPs' personal and professional lives are mutually interconnected. Given the NICU HCPs' knowledge of the risks and potential adverse outcomes of newborns admitted to the NICU, their pregnancy experience may be more challenging than that of the general population. However, to date, these aspects are still little studied. Design: A qualitative descriptive study design was adopted. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews were conducted between January and April 2021 in a single third‐level NICU in northeastern Italy. Transcripts were analysed using inductive content analysis. Findings are reported according to the COREQ guidelines. Results: Nineteen HCPs participated in this study. Participants included 12 nurses, 6 medical doctors, and 1 paediatric physical therapist. All participants reported that their professional knowledge and experience influenced their pregnancy‐related experiences, emotions and behaviours. Some participants employed adaptive coping strategies, while others were likely to experience post‐traumatic stress reactions. The narratives of the men and women were similar. Three themes were identified: 'Feeling different'; 'Influence of work experience on decision‐making'; 'Coping with difficulties'. Conclusion: To reduce the potential impact of NICU HCPs' work experience on pregnancy, family functioning and infant health, management of parental emotions should be considered for this population. Impact: Hospital managers could prevent the potential distress of vulnerable NICU healthcare workers during pregnancy by tailoring interventions aimed at supporting them in becoming aware and making sense of their work experiences or sensitizing individual psychological support. Purpose: This cross‐sectional, descriptive, correlational study aimed to measure burnout, quality of life (QOL) and perceptions of patient‐related adverse events among paediatric nurses amid the COVID‐19 pandemic and assess the relationships between these scores and participants' demographic and work‐related characteristics. Background: The mental health of most nurses may severely suffer due to the significant adversities that they struggle with while they care for their patients amid the COVID‐19 pandemic. Mental distress negatively affects nurses' relationships and work performance, which may adversely influence the quality of care and patient safety. Methods: A convenient sample of 225 Jordanian paediatric nurses completed a test batter comprising the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, the Brief Version of the World Health Organisation's Quality of Life questionnaire and the nurse‐perceived patient adverse events' questionnaire. This study was prepared and is reported according to the STROBE checklist. Results: Paediatric nurses reported high levels of burnout, low QOL and high occurrence of hospital‐acquired infections. Participants' age and hospital/unit capacity were significantly associated with burnout and QOL. Conclusion: Personal traits, perceived salary insufficiency and hospital/unit capacity represent factors that aggravate burnout, lower quality of life and worsen perceived patient safety among paediatric nurses. Relevance to clinical practice: Policymakers should promote nurses' mental integrity and patient safety by addressing issues of workload and financial sufficiency and by provide interventions aimed to increase nurses' resilience. Aim: To present the development, evaluation and adaptation of the PAIN‐Neo theory. Design: Theory development. Data Sources: A review of literature was conduct from 1980 to 2021. Results: Using a critical realism paradigm, this paper presents the PAIN‐Neo theory, which was developed from an analysis of existing theoretical perspectives on paediatric procedural pain, empirical studies conducted with preterm infants, and the research team's pain management expertise. The theory was then empirically tested and fine‐tuned. Implications for Nursing: The PAIN‐Neo theory highlights that the neonatal nurse is part of a larger picture as she is influenced by factors related to her unit, hospital and country of practice. This theory emphasizes the importance of parental involvement in pain management, which is consistent with family‐centred nursing practices. Conclusion: The PAIN‐Neo theory reflects the complexity of pain management nursing. Aims and objectives: To examine if the professional support that fathers received from midwives and child health nurses was associated with improvements in fathers' coparenting. A secondary aim was to investigate if there were any support differences between fathers based on parity. Background: Stronger coparenting is associated with improved maternal, paternal and child health. It is unclear if routine prenatal and postnatal professional support is associated with improved coparenting in fathers of infants. Design: Cross‐sectional online survey. Methods: In total, 612 fathers of infants (aged 0–24 months) completed baseline data between November 2018 and March 2020. Socio‐demographics, pregnancy control variables, social support, professional support, being invited to attend and attending three specific visits for fathers, respectively, and the fathers' coparenting relationship, using the Brief Coparenting Relationship Scale, were assessed. The STROBE checklist was used as the reporting guideline for this study. Results: Fathers' attendance at child health visits, support from the prenatal and postnatal midwife, respectively, and total support from the child health nurse, are associated with more positive coparenting. Primiparous fathers reported more received social and professional support, as well as a more positive coparenting relationship than multiparous fathers. Conclusions: Receiving clinical support from both midwives and child health nurses is associated with fathers' positive coparenting. All fathers should be invited and encouraged to attend prenatal, postnatal and child health visits to further support their coparenting relationship. Relative to primiparous fathers, multiparous fathers may require targeted and additional clinical support regarding their coparenting relationship. Relevance to clinical practice: With fathers becoming more involved in childrearing, having stronger coparenting skills can help them better adapt to their parental roles. Our findings help understand how routine professional support from midwives and child health nurses are experienced among new fathers and that multiparous fathers are in further need of coparenting support. Aim: To understand the lived experiences of nurses resuscitating children in community hospital emergency departments. Background: Emergency department nurses exposed to paediatric resuscitations are at a high risk of developing post‐traumatic stress. This may be especially true in community hospital emergency departments, where nurses have less exposure to, knowledge about, and resources for managing these events. Interventions to proactively prevent nurse trauma in these contexts remain largely uninvestigated. To inform such interventions, a detailed understanding of the largely unknown lived experiences of these nurses is necessary. Design and methods: In‐depth, semi‐structured interviews were conducted with four registered nurses that had experienced at least one paediatric resuscitation while working in a community hospital emergency department in Ontario, Canada. Data were analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. Reporting follows the COREQ checklist. Results: Analysis revealed three superordinate themes (i.e. 'Conceptualising Paediatric Resuscitations', 'Seeing What I See', and 'Making Sense of What I Saw') and nine corresponding subthemes. Conclusion: This study provides insight into the infrequent, but profound experiences of nurses resuscitating children in community hospital emergency departments. Nurses, who conceptualise these events as unnatural, emotional, and chaotic, are comforted by those who understand their experiences and are distressed by those who cannot see what they see. To reconcile what they have seen, nurses may reflect and ruminate on the event, ultimately restructuring their experiences of themselves, others, and the world to make room for a new reality where the safety of childhood is not certain. Relevance to clinical practice: Our findings contribute to pragmatic recommendations for interventions to proactively prevent nurse distress in these contexts, including psychoeducation, psychological support and in‐situ simulation activities. Aims and objectives: This qualitative study explored the experiences of neonatal nurses with facilitating closeness between parents and babies with congenital abnormalities in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Background: Babies with congenital abnormalities often require admission to the neonatal intensive care unit. Parents may experience emotional distancing from their baby, due to their response to their baby's congenital abnormality, as well as physical separation due to their baby's hospitalisation in the NICU. NICU nurses can help facilitate the development of closeness between babies and parents in the NICU. Method: This qualitative interpretive description study involved face‐to‐face, semi‐structured interviews with twelve neonatal nurses following which the data collected were thematically analysed. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist were used in preparing this paper. Results: Three major themes emerged from the analysis—"Everyone copes differently," "You have to focus on what is the normal thing" and "It's very much an individualised approach." Participants often felt unprepared to care for babies with congenital abnormalities and implemented coping mechanisms to overcome the emotional labour they experienced. Skin‐to‐skin cuddles were considered the most beneficial strategy for parents to develop closeness with their baby. Participants recognised that they sometimes "pushed" parents into engaging with their baby. Participants highlighted the importance of individualised, supportive care for these parents. Conclusions: Neonatal nurses require increased education about congenital abnormalities and individualised care to support them in caring for babies with congenital abnormalities.
