Aim: This article is a report of a study protocol designed to explore what factors inform healthcare professionals' clinical decision‐making when providing end of life care for people with dementia in primary care. Design: The proposed study will adopt a qualitative study design, utilizing an ethnographic approach. Methods: A mixed sample group of registered healthcare professionals, including district nurses, specialist nurses and general practitioners, will be purposively sampled and recruited from one health board in Wales, which will cover three settings in primary care. A multi‐method approach will be utilized to provide rich data, including non‐participant observation, semi‐structured interviews, and review of key documents. Data will be managed using NVivo 12 and analysed thematically. Ethics approval was gained in April 2022. Discussion: Little is known about the end of life care decision‐making process of healthcare professionals caring for people with dementia in primary care settings. This study will therefore address this pertinent gap. The study findings may also be transferable to healthcare professionals working in similar clinical settings across the UK. Impact It is anticipated that this study will inform the subsequent development of an intervention that can be used by healthcare professionals to support decision making and subsequently the provision of quality end of life care in primary care for people with dementia. Aim: To describe and discuss clinical strategies for nurses working in partnership with substitute decision‐makers for people living with advanced dementia. Background: By providing person‐centred care to patients living with advanced dementia, nurses are positioned to work in partnership with substitute decision‐makers who make healthcare decisions related to advanced care. Because the experience of being substitute decision‐makers is complex and stressful, nurses need skillsets for working in partnership with substitute decision‐makers. Design: In this discursive paper, an innovative framework for working in partnership with substitute decision‐makers is proposed. Method: Evidence‐based findings from a systematic review provided five domain foci for the partnership framework. In each domain, two clinical strategies were discursively proposed. Clinical strategies were hypothesised from research findings and insights from the authors' nursing experiences. Then, topical literature was searched, and findings were used to support the discursively argued strategies. Discussion: To deal with complexities and reduce stress for substitute decision‐makers, an innovative Nurse–Substitute Decision‐Maker Partnership Framework for use in the context of advanced dementia is proposed and discussed. The partnership framework consists of five domains: Building trust, Exploring emotions, Translating quality of life, Encouraging proactivity and Negotiating families. Within these domains, ten strategies to support the practices of clinical nurses to work in partnership with substitute decision‐makers are discussed. Relevance to Clinical Practice: In the framework, the ten clinical nursing strategies are designed to provide targeted care to substitute decision‐makers in areas that are known to cause complexity and stress to them. The Nurse–Substitute Decision‐Maker Partnership Framework has been designed to improve nurse–substitute decision‐maker partnerships and reduce the stress experienced by substitute decision‐makers as they work through the complexities associated with advanced dementia. Aim: This study aims to (1) introduce the emergent concept of the retrograde plunge experienced by people living with Alzheimer's disease and (2) illustrate how nurses can accompany those experiencing this phenomenon, as well as their family and formal carers, using the seven‐phase inquiry process proposed by Smith and Liehr. Design: Discursive paper. Methods: After describing the phenomenon and the Story Theory, the 7‐phase Inquiry Process presents the fictional story of Mrs. Lurie, a nursing home resident. Results: Story theory allows nurses to accompany Mrs. Lurie. The emergent concept of retrograde plunge is explained. Different tools such as genograms, story paths and eco‐maps are presented. This discussion demonstrates how some perspectives can contribute to a better description of the retrograde plunge phenomenon. The narrative care approach can help give voices to people experiencing retrograde phenomena. The adoption of a perspective that considers embodied language could help to better understand the needs of a person. Conclusion: There is a lack of consistency and uniformity regarding the understanding of the retrograde phenomenon. This impacts the quality of care for people and the scientific knowledge, research and education of healthcare professionals. This issue should be addressed in future studies. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: This article shows how story theory helps nurses accompany those facing a retrograde plunge phenomenon, helps them tell their own stories and finds a way to resolve the situation. Aims: To explore the nature of interactions that enable older inpatients with cognitive impairments to engage with hospital staff on falls prevention. Design: Ethnographic study. Methods: Ethnographic observations on orthopaedic and older person wards in English hospitals (251.25 h) and semi‐structured qualitative interviews with 50 staff, 28 patients and three carers. Findings were analysed using a framework approach. Results: Interactions were often informal and personalised. Staff qualities that supported engagement in falls prevention included the ability to empathise and negotiate, taking patient perspectives into account. Although registered nurses had limited time for this, families/carers and other staff, including engagement workers, did so and passed information to nurses. Conclusions: Some older inpatients with cognitive impairments engaged with staff on falls prevention. Engagement enabled them to express their needs and collaborate, to an extent, on falls prevention activities. To support this, we recommend wider adoption in hospitals of engagement workers and developing the relational skills that underpin engagement in training programmes for patient‐facing staff. Implications for Profession and Patient Care: Interactions that support cognitively impaired inpatients to engage in falls prevention can involve not only nurses, but also families/carers and non‐nursing staff, with potential to reduce pressures on busy nurses and improve patient safety. Background: Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia are a group of non‐cognitive symptoms such as agitation, physical aggression, depression, sexual disinhibition and psychosis. Therapeutic approaches vary because of the multifactorial and complex symptomology. The researchers of this study aimed to systematically review the nonpharmacological interventions for BPSD used by nurses in acute and subacute hospital settings. Design: The PRISMA guidelines guided this systematic review. The review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020184015). Method: The databases Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) complete, Medline complete, Excerpta Medica (Embase®) and PsycINFO published by the American Psychological Association (APA) were searched for studies published in English to October 2021. Quality appraisal was performed independently by three reviewers using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program tools. Data were synthesized using a narrative approach. Results: Two studies were identified that focused on interventions used by nurses; findings were positive for the use of nonpharmacological interventions to manage BPSD. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that nonpharmacological interventions are the best practices to manage BPSD. However, limited, and low‐quality evidence suggests that further investigation is required to understand the factors contributing to the lack of use of nonpharmacological interventions by nurses in acute and subacute hospital settings. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) occur for approximately 95% of patients diagnosed with dementia and significantly impact individuals, families, communities and healthcare systems.Due to the limited benefits and potential harm of pharmacological interventions, nonpharmacological interventions are considered the first line of treatment to manage BPSD in clinical practice.Previous systematic reviews were limited to interventions implemented by a multidisciplinary team or nonpharmacological therapies conducted mainly in a residential or long‐term care setting.What this paper adds? Aim s : The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between caregiving burden and pre‐death grief, with a specific focus on adult‐child caregivers in mainland China. Additionally, the study explored whether coping strategies played a mediating role in this correlation. Methods: A convenience sample of 320 adult‐child caregivers of older parents with dementia from Kunming, mainland China, was recruited for the study. Data were collected using the Chinese version of the Marwit‐Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory‐Short Form, the Burden Scale for Family Caregivers, and the Ways of Coping Checklist‐Revised. Results: Results using linear regression and multiple mediation analysis with Hayes' process model indicated that caregiving burden was positively related to pre‐death grief and that active coping mediated the relationship between them. In the female group, active coping partially mediated the association between caregiving burden and pre‐death grief, but in the male group, this mediating effect did not exist. Conclusion: The study found evidence supporting the link between caregiving burden and pre‐death grief among adult‐child caregivers of older parents with dementia in mainland China. Furthermore, the caregiving burden prevented the use of active coping, and this decrease in coping increased the perception of pre‐death grief. These associations only existed in the female group. Implications: This paper presented the importance of active coping skills in the dementia caregiving process. Impact: The findings of this study emphasize the necessity for health practitioners to provide targeted interventions regarding pre‐death grief among dementia caregivers and strengthen caregivers' active coping strategies to reduce their pre‐death grief. Community‐based and personal care support services should be promoted to alleviate their caregiving burden. Aim: To highlight the value of utilizing the Listening Guide methodology for nursing research and provide an exemplar applying this methodology to explore a novel concept in an underrepresented group—inner strength in persons newly diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment along with their care partners. Design: Methodology discussion paper. Methods: The exemplar study used the Listening Guide methods for data elicitation and analysis. Methods included adaptations for the study population and novice qualitative researchers. Results: The Listening Guide methodology with adaptations enabled the research team to centre the voices of persons living with mild cognitive impairment, highlight an abstract phenomenon and attend to the influences of the sociopolitical context. Further, this methodology helped address common challenges emerging qualitative researchers encounter, including understanding methods of application, engaging reflexively and immersing in the data. Conclusion: The Listening Guide is a voice‐centred qualitative methodology that is well suited to foreground the experiences of groups underrepresented in research and explore emerging phenomena. Implications for Nursing: Nurses are central to striving for health equity. The Listening Guide methodology offers a valuable and accessible research tool to understand the experiences and needs of underrepresented groups and shape healthcare in response. Impact: The Listening Guide methodology can be broadly applied to research with persons with mild cognitive impairment, and other underrepresented groups, to explore other phenomena beyond inner strength and move the science forward in representing the perspectives of groups underrepresented by research. Background: Sensory‐based program for people with advanced dementia aim to address unmet needs and to improve behaviours, mood or cognition. Pleasurable, involuntary sense memories stimulated by sensory‐based program are difficult to evaluate because it is not possible to ask what people with dementia remember about their past, or what sense memories are being evoked. Notwithstanding the challenges in identifying what sense memories people with dementia experience, nurses and caregivers should recognise the potential value of sense memories for pleasure and happiness and provide optimum conditions to stimulate the senses. Aims and objectives: To examine the potential for involuntary sense memories to be activated by sensory stimulation, with a focus on the effects of the Namaste Care programme. Design: This is a discursive paper applying a content analysis to the qualitative findings of studies reporting on the Namaste Care programme to critically evaluate the topic of involuntary sense memories for people living with advanced dementia. Methods: A literature review and content analysis of qualitative findings on the Namaste Care programme was performed. Findings are reported in line with the COREQ checklist. Results: Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria. Codes were grouped into four categories representing enhanced mood, pleasure, happiness and comfort capturing the effects of the sensory stimulation observed or perceived by nurses and family caregivers. Descriptions provide some evidence of sensory memories activated by stimulation of some senses but not all. Conclusion: Involuntary sense memories contribute to well‐being of people living with advanced dementia. Caregivers, including nurses, need to be aware that involuntary sense memories that do not rely on cognitive processes can be triggered by sensory stimulation and have the potential to enhance mood and bestow pleasure, happiness and comfort over and above the "activity" of the sensory programme. Relevance to clinical practice: By integrating the documented experiential findings and conceptual understandings of sense memory, this paper contributes to advancing the understanding of the value of involuntary sense memories for people living with dementia that nurses and caregivers need to be aware of and, in turn, provide the optimum conditions for memory of the senses to be activated. Results were screened, and eligible studies were appraised using Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP, 2019) and data synthesized using Evan & Pearson (2001) and Evans (2002). Results: The search returned 231 records, 11 were selected for critical appraisal and data synthesis. Four main themes (information for carers, process of diagnosing dementia, difficulties accessing support and cultural differences of experiences of services) were extracted. Discussion: Carers experience services as providing inadequate support for the Person with Dementia (PwD) and themselves for support relating to dementia. Difficulties in receiving information and support were experienced from before diagnosis to end‐of‐life (EoL) care. Additionally, cultural differences were found in carers' experiences. Implications for practice: The provision of and access to dementia support should be improved; more information for carers about dementia and dementia services is needed; cultural differences need to be appreciated in the support and information offered. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: Physical restraint is widely used in the elderly at home, and cognitive impairment is an important risk factor. Family caregivers of people with dementia are the main decision makers and implementers of physical restraint at home.Most people with dementia in China receive home care, and family caregivers face enormous care and moral pressures influenced by Confucian culture.Current research on physical restraints focuses on quantitative analysis of its prevalence and reasons within the institutions. There is little research on how family caregivers perceive physical restraints in home care context, especially under Chinese culture. Aim: To explore the perceptions of family caregivers on physical restraints in people diagnosed with dementia receiving home care. Method: A descriptive, qualitative study of Chinese family caregivers of people diagnosed with dementia in home care. Framework method analysis was adopted using the multilevel socio‐ecological model. Results: Beliefs about benefit lead to a dilemma for family caregivers. Cherishing family's affection encourages caregivers to reduce physical restraints, but lack of help from family members, professionals and the community forces them to restrain their loved ones. Discussion: Future research should explore the complex issue of culturally specific physical restraints decisions. Implications for Practice: Mental health nurses must receive education regarding the negative outcomes of the use of physical restraints for family members of people diagnosed with dementia. A more liberal approach to mental health and relevant legislation, which is an emerging global phenomenon that is currently in an early phase of development in China, grants human rights to people diagnosed with dementia. What is Known on the Subject: Research has shown effectiveness of nonpharmacological interventions in improving or maintaining cognition, mood, functioning, self‐efficacy and quality of life for persons with mild‐to‐moderate dementia (PWDs).These interventions are critical during the earlier stages of dementia. However, Canadian and international literature report underutilization of and difficulty accessing the interventions. What this Paper Adds to Existing Knowledge: To our knowledge, this is the first review that explored factors influencing seniors' utilization of nonpharmacological interventions in the earlier stages of dementia. This review contributed to the discovery of unique factors such as PWDs' beliefs, fears, perceptions, and acceptability of nonpharmacological interventions and environmental influences on intervention provision.PWDs' intervention uptake may appear as a matter of personal choices related to individuals' knowledge, beliefs and perceptions. However, the analysis of the research evidence suggests that PWDs' choices are shaped by environmental factors such as formal and informal caregiver support, acceptability and accessibility of nonpharmacological interventions, dementia care workforce, community's attitudes towards dementia and funding. The complex interplay among factors highlights the importance of targeting health promotion strategies at both individuals and their environments. What are the Implications for Practice: The review findings feature opportunities for healthcare practitioners, including mental health nurses, in advocating for PWDs' evidence‐informed decision‐making and access to desired nonpharmacological treatments. Involvement of patients and families in care‐planning through ongoing assessment of health and learning needs, as well as enablers and barriers to using interventions, continuing information provision, and personalized referrals to appropriate services can promote PWDs' rights to healthcare. Introduction: Despite the significance of nonpharmacological interventions in optimal management of mild‐to‐moderate dementia, it remains unclear in the literature how persons with mild‐to‐moderate dementia (PWDs) view, understand and access nonpharmacological interventions. Aim: The purpose of this review was to explore the extent and nature of evidence concerning factors that influence the use of nonpharmacological interventions for community‐dwelling seniors with mild‐to‐moderate dementia. Method: An integrative review was undertaken following Toronto and Remington (A step‐by‐step guide to conducting an integrative review, 2020)'s instruction which expanded Torraco (Human Resource Development Review, 2016, 15, 404)'s and Whittemore and Knafl (Journal of Advanced Nursing, 2005, 52, 546)'s guidance. Results: The review of 16 studies suggests that PWDs' use of nonpharmacological interventions is shaped by a complex interplay of various personal, interpersonal, organizational, community and political influences. Discussion: The findings highlight the complex, interrelated relationships among multiple factors and subsequent limitations of behaviour‐oriented health promotion strategies. To assist PWDs in making healthier choices, health promotion strategies need to direct attention to both individuals' behaviours and environmental conditions impacting the behaviours. Implications for Practice: The findings of this review can inform multidisciplinary health practitioners' (including mental health nurses) practice with seniors living with mild‐to‐moderate dementia. Aims and Objectives: To synthesise information about the needs of older people with dementia from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds living in residential aged care from the perspectives of the residents, families and care staff. Background: Older people with dementia from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds living in residential aged care have care needs that are complex. Identifying these needs is critical to ensure quality care is delivered. Design: An integrative review of literature. Methods: Five databases were searched for relevant articles: APA PsychINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus and Google Scholar. The search and screening were guided by PRISMA guidelines and Whittemore and Knafl's five‐step framework. Results: Fifteen papers were included in this review consisting of 4 quantitative, 9 qualitative and 2 mixed method studies. Two themes described the needs of older people with dementia from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds living in residential aged care. The first was related to culture‐specific needs, and the second was related to dementia‐specific care needs. Culture‐specific needs comprised of three subthemes: (a) common language, (b) traditional food, and (c) social and spiritual requirements. Dementia‐specific needs comprised of (a) focusing on comfort in addition to clinical requirements and (b) individualised care that addresses behavioural symptoms of dementia. Conclusions: Identifying and meeting the needs of older people with dementia from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds will improve quality care delivery in addition to increased caregiving satisfaction among residents, families and care staff, and the management of behaviours that characterise dementia. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Care needs of older people with dementia from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds living in the residential setting can be complex. Education and training of care staff including nurses must be considered so that provision of care is inclusive of the cultural and dementia needs for older people in residential aged care. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: Much research has been conducted on the relationship between recovery orientation and people diagnosed with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and mood disorders. A recovery‐oriented approach by mental health professionals can reduce hospital stays and medical costs for people diagnosed with mental illness.There are similarities and differences between recovery‐oriented approaches for individuals diagnosed with dementia and those diagnosed with mental illness. This reflects the characteristics of irreversible dementia.Although dementia courses at recovery colleges are increasing, dementia recovery is in its infancy and course content varies. The core of the recovery framework for individuals diagnosed with dementia is 'Continue to be me'.Recovery‐oriented approaches and programmes have been developed by mental health workers for older adults, including those with dementia, but there are no outcome measures that reflect the characteristics of dementia care. What the paper adds to existing knowledge?: We developed a scale to assess nurses' recovery orientation in dementia care, which has been found to be reliable, and although some validity issues remain, it is the first scale to objectively assess recovery orientation in dementia care.The emphasis is on helping people diagnosed with dementia maintain their identity, which is not adequately covered by existing measures of recovery. What are the implications for practice?: The ability to objectively assess recovery orientation in dementia care allows us to identify areas of inadequacy.It can be used to reduce variation in the content of recovery college courses and as an indicator for evaluating training in recovery‐oriented approaches to dementia care. Introduction: Programmes regarding recovery‐oriented approaches for older people, including those with dementia, have been developed, but there are no clear indicators, and the process is still in its infancy. Methods: A draft of a 28‐item scale was developed based on interviews with 10 nurses, skilled in dementia care with a Japanese mental health perspective, and a literature review. A self‐administered questionnaire was developed for nurses working in a dementia ward, and an exploratory factor analysis was conducted. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to test for convergent and discriminant validity. The Recovery Attitude Questionnaire was used to examine criterion‐related validity. Results: An exploratory factor analysis produced a 19‐item scale and identified five factors (KMO value: 0.854). The Cronbach's alpha for the overall scale was.856, with each subfactor showing a range of.742–.792, validating its reliability. Discussion: The results of confirmatory factor analysis supported the five‐factor construct. Reliability was verified, but some issues remained in convergent and discriminant validity. Implications for Practice: This scale can be used to objectively assess nurses' recovery orientation in dementia care and as a measure of training in recovery‐oriented approaches. Aims: This review aimed to determine the characteristics of a nurse‐led intervention for people with dementia including mild cognitive impairment and their family in an ambulatory care setting. Background: Enhancing the role of nurses in a multidisciplinary team of ambulatory care follow‐up after a diagnosis of dementia is thought to lead to successful dementia care. Design This is a scoping review. Data Sources: MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane, JBI, Japan Medical Abstracts Society, PsycINFO and Web of Science were searched on 14 March 2019. Review Methods: This scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, followed the PRISMA‐ScR checklist and considered studies that included interventions conducted by nurses and included outcomes regarding dementia symptoms or family care burden. Results: Eleven studies were included. Of these, all interventions were multifactorial and reported effective results. Educational interventions were most common, and the content of education included the characteristics of dementia and how to interact with patients with dementia. The roles of nurses included caregiver education, assessment, care plan creation for continuous monitoring and team building. Conclusion: This scoping review suggested that effective nurse‐led interventions in the ambulatory care of people with dementia are continuous patient and family supports, primarily caregiver education within multidisciplinary teams. Roles of nurses in dementia care consisted of understanding dementia, recognizing dementia, effective communication, assisting with daily living activities, promoting a positive environment, ethical and person‐centred care, therapeutic work, responding to the needs of family carers, preventative work and health promotion and special needs groups.Outpatient nurse‐led interventions were not economically different from those led by doctors, but they produced better results regarding health‐related quality of life.Nurse education was an important factor in ambulatory dementia care. Aim: This study aimed to describe levels of social support and explore the factors predictive of social support for Chinese family caregivers of patients with dementia. Background: Social support levels and their predictive factors in Chinese dementia caregivers have not been well documented, which need to be further clarified to provide a basis for creating effective social support strategies. Methods: This was a cross‐sectional study with 91 participants who completed a demographic questionnaire and the Social Support Rating Scale from 2015 to 2016. Results: Chinese family caregivers of patients with dementia received moderate social support. Caregivers' subjective support domain scores and support utilization domain scores were significantly lower than those of the normal Chinese population, whereas caregivers' total social support scores were higher than those of the normal Chinese population. Family caregivers' monthly household income, educational level and place of residence were predictors of their own social support. Conclusion: Social support in Chinese caregivers of patients with dementia needs to be improved, especially the subjective support and support utilization. Healthcare professionals should pay special attention to caregivers with a lower monthly household income and educational level and caregivers who lived in the suburban area. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject: Nurses working at nursing homes can play a pivotal role in mental health as a high proportion of residents diagnosed with dementia are in these facilities.Many institutionalized residents diagnosed with dementia develop clinical complications and symptoms that reduce the quality of dying.A mixed‐methods approach can help nurses with the difficult task of assessing the quality of dying among these residents and identify inconsistencies that cannot be found using scales alone, but no studies were found in this topic. Aim: Of the few instruments available to measure the important, positive aspects of caring, the Caregiver Reaction Assessment is regarded as the most suitable, but there is no validated Spanish version. The aim of this study was to translate the Caregiver Reaction Assessment into Spanish and assess its psychometric properties. Methods: The Caregiver Reaction Assessment was translated into Spanish and then back translated. Validation included construct validity, criterion validity and reliability: 287 interviews were conducted with informal caregivers of patients with dementia between November 2010 and April 2012. Results: Principal component analysis confirmed the original instrument's five subscales. Criterion validity showed a moderate negative correlation between the impact on health and the EQ‐5D (r = −.43), that is, a greater impact on health correlated with lower health‐related quality of life. The Caregiver Reaction Assessment showed good internal consistency, with a Cronbach alpha of.804, and good temporal stability for the distinct subscales, with intraclass correlation coefficients varying from.683 to.729 (p <.001). Conclusion: The Caregiver Reaction Assessment is a reliable, valid instrument for the measurement of the reactions of informal caregivers of patients with dementia, with good psychometric properties. Aim: This study aimed to explore the experiences of family caregivers interacting with people with dementia. Background: A majority of people with mild‐to‐moderate dementia live at home with family caregivers. This interaction creates positive experiences and challenges for these caregivers. Design Descriptive phenomenological qualitative inquiry guided this study. Methods: This qualitative study involved semi‐structured interviews with the caregivers of people with mild‐to‐moderate dementia (n = 10). Data were collected from June to September 2018, and then data were thematically analysed. Results: Six categories of themes were identified from the interviews: (1) unexpected things often happen; (2) positive coping strategies; (3) sense of accomplishment because people with dementia actively participate in activities; (4) sense of frustration because of the reluctance of people with dementia to participate in activities; (5) hope for the happiness of people with dementia; and (6) want to have their own life. Conclusions: This study reveals that caregivers could positively interact with people with dementia through creating opportunities and arranging meaningful activities. Aims and objectives: To evaluate acceptability, efficiency, and quality of a new digital care management system in a residential aged care home (RACH). Background: Improving care quality and efficiency in RACH, while simultaneously upgrading data management, is a priority for communities and governments. Design: Participatory action research with mixed methods data collection was employed to evaluate a digital care management system implemented at a 169‐bed RACH. This paper reports qualitative findings of the 2‐year evaluation. Methods: Qualitative data were collected using focus groups with residents, visitors, nurses, managers, care workers, and consultants; resident/visitor and staff hallway interviews and responses to open‐ended questions in online staff surveys. Data were analysed thematically under the four predetermined study objectives. Reporting adhered to COREQ guidelines. Results: 325 data captures from 88 participants, over seven data sources were coded. Findings indicate that the system was acceptable to both residents and staff due to perceptions of time‐saving and improved quality of care. Increased efficiency was perceived through timeliness as well as reduced time spent retrieving and documenting information. Quality of care was improved through care scheduling individualised to resident needs, with reminders to avoid missed care. Relatives were reassured and activities were scheduled to loved one's preferences. The co‐design implementation process was successful through commitment to quality from leadership teams and prioritising the focus on the holistic needs of the residents. Conclusion: A strong emphasis on co‐design with care staff in developing and implementing the digital care system contributed to a system that supported nursing and care work, facilitated reporting and documentation, and improved resident care and well‐being including identification of missed care. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nurses, carers, administrators, and advocates can support the co‐design creation of information systems that suit the workflow of an organisation and keep the focus on individualised models of care provision. Accessible Summary: What is known on the subject?: The role of informal caregiver can have both negative and positive consequences for a person's well‐being. The main theoretical framework for explaining these consequences is the stress process model, which considers contextual variables, stressors and mediating/moderating factors. The latter are psychosocial factors such as coping strategies, personal mastery, social support or beliefs and values which may influence caregiver well‐being. The perception of gains in caregiving has also been proposed as a mediating variable since it may act as a coping strategy. However, few studies have examined values and perceived gains as mediating variables with life satisfaction as the outcome. What the paper adds to existing knowledge?: This study explores the role of character strengths and caregiver gains as mediators between stressors and life satisfaction in informal caregivers of persons with dementia. The results identify hope as a key character strength, its lack being one pathway through which stress may lead to low life satisfaction and low perceived gains from caregiving. What are the implications for practice?: Caregivers who experience a lack of hope may be less able to generate goals and be less motivated to achieve them. Aim: To explore the role of character strengths and perceived gains as mediators in the association between life satisfaction and primary and secondary stressors in informal caregivers of persons with dementia. Method: Participants were 112 informal caregivers. Hierarchical regression, correlation and mediation analyses were performed. Results: Lower life satisfaction was associated with being female, unmarried, caring for someone with greater cognitive impairment, a higher level of stress, having restricted leisure time and perceiving financial difficulties. Hope mediated the associations between perceived stress and both life satisfaction and perceived gains of caregiving. Discussion: Hope is a key strength and its lack is one pathway through which stress may cause low satisfaction and low perceived gains from caregiving. Implications for practice: Without hope, it is difficult for caregivers to generate goals and be motivated to achieve them. Aims and objectives: To review short documentary films about older men with advanced dementia to use in teaching, and therein address the gender imbalance in the dementia care curricula and create opportunities to learn about masculine vulnerability. Background: There has been a growing recognition of the role of gender in respect of vulnerability, with emerging evidence suggesting a need to acknowledge and prioritise dementia as a global women's health issue. Whilst a focus on women is understandable—more women are affected by dementia than men—gender does not equal women. It is important for nursing students, nurses and allied health professionals to understand the vulnerabilities facing older men with dementia as well, including gay men, who may face additional challenges. Design: Discursive paper outlining the limitations of using mainstream fiction films in dementia care education and reviewing three short documentary films about older men with advanced dementia to use in teaching. Methods: We summarised the literature on using films in nurse education and review three short documentary films about older men with advanced dementia and their (male) caregivers in the context of international nursing standards and concept of vulnerability. Conclusions: Education is key to understanding and improving the lived experience of dementia. Our article endorses the use of films in the classroom but highlights that mainstream fiction films about people (women) with dementia are not always appropriate for pedagogic purposes. Our review of three short documentary films on older men with advanced dementia uncovers an untapped teaching resource for care educators. Relevance to clinical practice: Given the rising number of older men and women with advanced dementia, nurses are uniquely positioned to advocate for and mobilise support. The short documentary films reviewed in this article can engage nurses emotionally and generate discussion of ways that older men with dementia and their caregivers might be vulnerable. Aims and objectives: To establish an understanding of healthcare professionals' dementia knowledge and attitudes towards dementia care, and family carers' perceptions of dementia care in China. Background: Healthcare professionals and family carers of people with dementia deliver most of the dementia care in China. However, little research on healthcare professionals' dementia knowledge and attitudes towards dementia care, and family carers' dementia care perceptions has been conducted in China. Methods: An integrative review was conducted and reported based on the PRISMA guidelines and Whittemore and Knafl's framework. Eight English databases were searched without date restriction: CINAHL Plus with Full Text, MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, PsycINFO and Scopus; and three Chinese databases: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chongqing Weipu and Wanfang, plus a manual search of reference lists. Results: Thirty‐eight primary research papers were included in the review. Three themes were identified from the synthesis: (a) knowledge and competency; (b) attitudes towards dementia care; and (c) carers' burden and unmet needs. Healthcare professionals' dementia knowledge ranged from low to moderate levels and attitudes towards dementia care were generally negative. With low levels of knowledge of dementia and negative attitudes including stigma, family carers were under stress with insufficient support, and they expected more support from community nurses. Conclusions: There is an apparent need for a national policy on healthcare professional education and training to improve dementia care practice in China. Such a policy may improve support services for family carers. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses, and particularly community nurses, are well‐positioned to support family carers in China. However, healthcare professionals in China are not prepared for this. Therefore, education and training on dementia care should be integrated into medical and nursing undergraduate programmes and provided for healthcare professionals after commencing employment, and strategies to reduce stigma are needed. Aim: The present study aims to explore the research hot spots, development trends and knowledge structure of dignity in the nursing field. Design: Quantitative and co‐word biclustering analysis were used. Methods: Articles on dignity care published from 01 Jan 2011 to 31 Dec 2020, were retrieved from PubMed. The extracted Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms were quantitatively analysed using Bibliographic Item Co‐occurrence Matrix Builder software. To determine the hot spots, a biclustering analysis was completed using gCluto1.0 software. A strategic diagram and a social network analysis (SNA) were used to reveal trends in the theme and knowledge structure. Results: In the parameters of the retrieval strategy, a total of 1977 papers were included in the present study. Amongst all the extracted MeSH terms, 27 high‐frequency MeSH terms were identified, and the hot spots were grouped into five categories. These were namely dignity in: (1) dementia care, (2) palliative care, (3) older people care, (4) healthcare and (5) clinical nursing. In the strategic diagram, the study of dignity in clinical nursing was active and should become an emerging field of research in the near future. Conclusions: Based on the co‐word biclustering of dignity care over the past 10 years, five hot spots were identified, and it was predicted that research on dignity in clinical nursing would be the main trend in future studies. Amongst the five themes it was interesting to note that dignity in dementia and palliative care are core priorities to which scholars should pay more attention. Impact: In recent years, dignity‐conserving care has been highly valued, however, there are few relevant bibliometric articles that can be referenced on this topic. The present study was considered to offer novel insights into research on dignity in nursing and could be a reliable reference point for researchers when launching new projects. Aim The aim of this study was to report on an analysis of the concept of pre-death grief in the context of dementia family caregiving. Background Research indicates that witnessing changes and losses in a family member with dementia can lead to pre-death grief. Pre-death grief is associated with depression, burden and maladaptive caregiver coping. However, the concept lacks a refined definition and blurs with similar constructs. Design Concept analysis using a hybrid of Penrod and Hupcey's principle-based concept analysis and Chin and Kramer's conceptualization of meaning. Data Sources 49 peer-reviewed papers (2000-2013) that addressed pre-death grief in dementia family caregivers were used for the principle-based analysis; two examples from the popular media were used for the analysis of conceptual meaning. Methods The scientific papers were examined for epistemological, linguistic, pragmatic and logical clarity. The two examples from the popular media were explored for conceptual meaning. Results Pre-death grief in the context of dementia caregiving is a meaningful concept found in the popular media. From a scholarly point of view, it is an emerging concept. A definition is offered to advance conceptual clarity. Discussion focuses on advancing the concept into a situation-specific middle-range theory of pre-death grief in family caregiving. Conclusions The concept of pre-death grief has salience for researchers and caregivers. Aim: A discussion of the use of video feedback as an effective and feasible method to promote person‐centred communication approaches within dementia care and long‐term care. Background: Effective strategies to integrate person‐centred approaches into health care settings have attracted global attention and research in the past two decades. Video feedback has emerged as technique to enhance reflective learning and person‐centred practice change in some care settings; however, it has not been tested in the context of person‐centred dementia communication in long‐term care. Design Discussion paper. Data Sources: Articles dating from 1995 to 2018 retrieved via searches of the SCOPUS, CINAHL, MEDLINE and Cochrane Systematic Review databases. Implications for Nursing: Inclusion of video feedback in a person‐centred dementia communication intervention for nurses and other health care providers may effectively fill a gap evident in the literature. This intervention can offer feedback of enhanced quality and enduring impact on behaviour change relative to traditional training. Conclusion: A critical review of empirical and theoretical evidence supports video feedback as a potential means to enhance person‐centred communication within the context of dementia and long‐term care. The promising benefits of video feedback present a novel research opportunity to pilot its use to enhance person‐centred communication between nurses/health care providers and persons with dementia in long‐term care. Aim: To explore the impact of cultural beliefs of dementia as witchcraft in sub‐Saharan Africa. Background: The population of sub‐Saharan Africa is ageing, which increases the number of those at risk of dementia. Mental health and physical diseases that affect behaviour have often been associated with witchcraft. Accusations of witchcraft leave individuals vulnerable and at risk. Method: A systematic review, which followed the Preferred Reporting for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and completed a PRISMA checklist. CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Knowledge, PubMed and Science Direct databases were searched for relevant studies published from their inception to 31 May 2019 by applying appropriate Medical Subject Headings. Data analysis adhered to Thomas and Harding's thematic synthesis. Results: The review identified limited literature on this topic, with only five papers meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies explored health provision, and knowledge and beliefs of dementia in Tanzania and South Africa. Three themes emerged as follows: (a) poor knowledge of dementia, including the belief of dementia as witchcraft; (b) challenges of supporting a family member with dementia in the community; and (c) health‐seeking behaviours of and for people with dementia. Conclusion: There remains a need for dementia awareness and education across sub‐Saharan Africa communities, including faith and traditional healers, and healthcare professionals to support pluralistic healthcare provision. Nurses are the best‐placed healthcare professionals to support these initiatives and the development and implementation of low‐resource nonpharmacological interventions to support people with dementia and their families living in the community. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses working in sub‐Saharan Africa and those caring for patients from sub‐Saharan Africa can only provide person‐centred care and support for a person with dementia and their family if they understand their cultural beliefs, one of which may include witchcraft. Aim: To review existing research on nonpharmacological tactile activity interventions for reducing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia in the acute hospital setting. Background: When people living with dementia are admitted to hospital, they often experience an exacerbation of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. Pharmacological interventions are often used to manage behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia despite the low success rate and the heightened risk of morbidity and mortality. Low‐cost alternatives that are implementable at the bedside are nonpharmacological interventions such as tactile activity interventions. Design: An integrative review of the literature. Methods: Four databases were searched using the PRISMA framework to guide the search and screening. Eligible studies were identified and the quality of each was evaluated using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify and analyse key themes across all articles. The PRISMA checklist was used to evaluate the current study. Results: Seven studies examined the use of tactile activity interventions to reduce the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia and the barriers and facilitators to implementation. Conclusion: There is limited evidence exploring tactile activity interventions for reducing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia in acute hospital settings. Individualised approaches in combination with staffing expertise appear central to implementation. Aims and objectives: To systematically identify, summarise and compare evidence from studies related to the non‐pharmacological interventions used to manage pain in patients with dementia. Secondly, this study aims to provide evidence on the effectiveness of non‐pharmacological interventions used to manage pain in patients with dementia. Background: The number of people diagnosed with dementia is rising rapidly in the context of ageing. Pain is considered to be one of the most common neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia. To date, little research has focused on non‐pharmacological interventions to manage pain in patients with dementia. Therefore, a systematic review on the non‐pharmacological interventions used to manage pain in patients with dementia and how effective these interventions are, is warranted. Method: The extensive search strategy included electronic database searches for CINAHL, MEDLINE and PsycINFO from January 2009 to February 2020. A mixed‐methods systematic review was undertaken in accordance with the PRISMA statement and relevant papers were chosen based on inclusion criteria and quality assessment measures. Eligibility criteria defined the characteristics of inclusion studies using the PICO framework. Results were extracted to a synthesis table. The quality appraisal was conducted using JBI and CASP checklist. Results: Eight studies met the inclusion criteria. These included six randomised controlled trials, one quasi‐experimental study and one qualitative descriptive study. The current review identified various non‐pharmacological interventions for pain management in patients with dementia including singing, painting, massage, ear acupressure, play activities program and robot. The most common intervention was massage while the most effective intervention was play activities program. All studies provided evidence that non‐pharmacological interventions have an effect on pain management in patients with dementia or that there was a tendency for non‐pharmacological intervention to reduce pain in patients with dementia. Overall, the quality of the included studies was interpreted as strong (n = 8). Conclusions: Overall, interactive pharmacological interventions were more effective than non‐interactive non‐pharmacological interventions. While this review highlighted a limited number of studies investigating the use of non‐pharmacological interventions to manage pain in patients with dementia, it did however uncover a range of non‐pharmacological interventions used to manage pain in these patients along with their level of effectiveness. Relevance to clinical practice: Further research is required to explore which non‐pharmacological interventions are most effective in the management of pain in patients with varying degrees of cognitive impairment. Aims and objectives: To explore the current evidence of nurses caring for people with intellectual disability and dementia who experience pain. Background: People with intellectual disability are ageing and are experiencing age‐related health conditions including dementia and conditions associated with pain, but at an earlier age. Addressing the needs of people with intellectual disability who develop dementia is a new challenge for nurses. Design: An integrative literature review. Methods: A systematic search of databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Cochrane, EMBASE, Academic Search Complete, Scopus and Web of Science between 27 October 2017–7 November 2017. Hand searching and review of secondary references were also undertaken. Quality appraisal (Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool), thematic data analysis (Braun and Clarke, Qualitative Research in Psychology, 3, 2006, 77) and reporting using the PRISMA guidelines. Results: Seven papers met the inclusion criteria, and three themes emerged from this review: nurses knowledge of ageing, dementia and pain; recognising pain in people with intellectual disability and dementia; and the role of nurse education. People with intellectual disability and dementia have difficulty communicating their pain experience compounded by pre‐existing communication difficulties. Conclusions: A pain experience can present similar to behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and diagnostic overshadowing often occurs whereby a pain need is misinterpreted as behavioural and psychological symptoms resulting in inappropriate treatment. Nurses need greater knowledge about the presence of pain and potential causes in people with intellectual disability and dementia, and education can be effective in addressing this knowledge deficit. Relevance to clinical practice: Pain assessment tools for people with intellectual disability and dementia need to include behavioural elements, and baseline assessments are required to identify changes in presentation. Also, evidence is needed to demonstrate the impacts of implementing person‐centred care and staff experiences. Results: Three hundred and ten staff and leaders in a hospital participated in the GPA education and completed a posteducation survey (n = 297). After 1 year, two follow‐up focus groups were conducted with interdisciplinary staff (n = 24) across medicine and mental health programmes. Our analysis identified three themes to enable person‐centred care: (a) changing attitudes, (b) changing practices and (c) changing conditions. Discussion: This study contributes to the literature by providing evidence of how an education programme was implemented in a large Canadian hospital to build capacity for dementia care. Joint education for interprofessional staff offers value in enabling person‐centred care. Implication: Mental health nurses are in position to lead dementia education and advocate for person‐centred care in hospitals. Aims and objectives: To identify barriers and facilitators to engagement of people with dementia and family carers in planning for discharge from hospital. Background: Hospital discharge can be particularly challenging for older people with dementia. To assist in the development of bespoke discharge processes that address the unique needs of older people with dementia, an integrated review of the literature was undertaken. Design and methods: A four‐stage integrative review framework guided the review. Three search strategies were employed: a computerised database search, a hand search of reference lists and forward citation searching. Paired members of the research team reviewed eligible full‐text papers. The methodological quality of each paper was assessed using the Mixed‐Methods Assessment Tool, followed by data extraction and completion of summary tables. Within and across study analysis and synthesis of study findings was undertaken using thematic synthesis. Results: Fifteen papers were included in the review. Most identified barriers to collaborative discharge processes related to distributed responsibility for discharge, risk averse approaches to discharge, limited family carer confidence, and limited validation of assumptions about family competency to manage at home. Facilitators included supported clinician and family carer engagement, and maintaining independence for activities of daily living. Relevance to clinical practice: Reflective analysis of discharge decisions, focused on risk and possible risk aversion, can assist teams to evaluate the quality of their discharge decisions. The use of formal communication strategies such as a patient/family‐held journal of the hospital experience and a structured family meeting early in the hospital admission can enhance family engagement in discharge planning. Over the past two decades the advocates of person-centred approaches to dementia care have consistently argued that some of the negative impacts of dementia can be ameliorated in supportive social environments and they have given lie to the common but unfounded, nihilistic belief that meaningful engagement with people with dementia is impossible. This discussion paper contributes to this welcome trend by exploring how carers can use empathic curiosity to establish the common ground that is necessary to sustain meaningful engagement with people who have mild to moderate dementia. The first section of the paper gives a brief theoretical introduction to the concept of empathic curiosity, which is informed by perceptual control theory and applied linguistics. Three case examples taken from the literature on dementia care are then used to illustrate what empathic curiosity may look like in practice and to explore the potential impact that adopting an empathic and curious approach may have. Aims and objectives This paper describes the steps used in developing and piloting a structured education programme - the Structured Education Reminiscence-based Programme for Staff ( SERPS). The programme aimed to prepare nurses and care assistants to use reminiscence when caring for people with dementia living in long-term care. Reminiscence involves facilitating people to talk or think about their past. Background Structured education programmes are used widely as interventions in randomised controlled trials. However, the process of developing a structured education programme has received little attention relative to that given to evaluating the effectiveness of such programmes. This paper makes explicit the steps followed to develop the SERPS, thereby making a contribution to the methodology of designing and implementing effective structured education programmes. Design The approach to designing the SERPS was informed by the Van Meijel et al. (2004) model ( Journal of Advanced Nursing 48, 84): (1) problem definition, (2) accumulation of building blocks for intervention design, (3) intervention design and (4) intervention validation. Methods Grounded theory was used (1) to generate data to shape the 'building blocks' for the SERPS and (2) to explore residents, family and staff's experience of using/receiving reminiscence. Results Analysis of the pilot data indicated that the programme met its objective of preparing staff to use reminiscence with residents with dementia. Staff were positive both about the SERPS and the use of reminiscence with residents with dementia. Conclusions This paper outlines a systematic approach to developing and validating a structured education programme. Participation in a structured education programme is more positive for staff if they are expected to actively implement what they have learnt. Ongoing support during the delivery of the programme is important for successful implementation. Accessible summary: What is known on the subject?: Positive aspects of care are considered an essential part of caregiving research. They have been related to a wide range of dimensions of the caregiving circumstances, but there are few valid, reliable and brief measures to assess them. One of the most frequently used internationally is the Positive Aspects of Caregiving (PAC) scale, whose psychometric properties have received little attention. What the paper adds to existing knowledge?: The present study analyses the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the PAC scale in a sample of informal caregivers of someone with dementia and further explores the association of different factors (e.g. caregiver health, sociodemographic variables) with the PAC.The Portuguese version of PAC scale presented good psychometric characteristics, and the factor analysis revealed the presence of two factors: affirming self and enriching life.Our study also verified that higher levels of PAC are more likely to be associated with better caregiver health perception, lower levels of psychological distress and burden, the care recipient's older age, providing care to more than one care recipient, not receiving social support services and not considering institutionalizing the care recipient. The Positive Aspects of Caregiving (PAC) scale is one of the instruments most frequently used internationally, but its psychometric properties and correlates within the caregiving experience have received limited attention. Aim: To examine the factorial structure of the Portuguese version of PAC scale and to analyse background and contextual factors that are more likely to be associated with higher levels of PAC. Method: The PAC scale, a sociodemographic questionnaire and measures assessing burden and physical and mental health were administered to 204 informal caregivers of dementia patients. Results: Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two‐factor structure; internal consistency was adequate. Higher scores were negatively correlated with caregiver burden and distress. Better health perception, care recipient's older age, providing care to more than one care recipient and overall self‐reliance were correlated with higher levels of PAC. Discussion: The PAC scale was found to be a reliable and valid measure. Dementia caregiving circumstances and caregivers' and care receivers' characteristics play an important role for the presence of PAC, but relate distinctively with its dimensions. Aim: Exploring what makes communication meaningful from the perspective of people with dementia. Methods: Nine dyadic interactions between a person with dementia and a family carer were filmed. Individuals with dementia watched the footage and reflected on their communications in semi‐structured interviews. Results: Three superordinate themes emerged. Themes 'sharing moments of emotional connection' and 'empowering one's ability to communicate' related to the experience of feeling connected, understood, valued and heard, allowing further communication. Conversely, 'inhibitors to communication' related feeling disempowered and reduced interactions. Discussion: Even when carers could not understand what people with dementia attempted to communicate, their efforts to interact with them were valued and considered meaningful as they reinforce their sense of connectedness. Implications for practice: Embracing a person‐centred approach by actively attuning to the person and continuously attempting to empathize and understand persons with dementia can help preserve important relationships and allow the person to feel valued and interpersonally connected. Aims and Objectives: Current research suggests that communication training programmes for caregivers of people living with dementia can benefit both parties by improving communication, quality of life and stress. Previous reviews in this area focus on mixed samples of formal and informal caregivers. This review aimed to evaluate current research for trainings specifically for informal caregivers, including the research quality and the key training components. Design and Methods: The review followed the PRISMA research reporting checklist. The electronic databases CINAHL, Embase, Medline and Psychinfo and reference lists of included literature were searched for studies relevant to the aims. Of the 45 identified studies, 36 were excluded based on pre‐specified criteria. Nine studies were included in the final review and subject to quality appraisal using the Qualsyst tool. Results: The included studies' programmes averaged 5 to 6 hours in length over four to five sessions, were mostly face to face in both group and individual settings and were developed using various communication and psychological theories. Studies demonstrated variable quality and outcomes, making it difficult to identify optimal components. However, careful consideration of different factors enabled some suggestions for training dose, delivery method, content and outcomes to measure. Conclusions: Communication training programmes can benefit people living with dementia and their informal caregivers in outcomes such as communication skills and quality of life. Suggestions are made on the training components that optimise these benefits. Relevance to clinical practice: Given the clear benefits on outcomes such as quality of life, there is a need for communication trainings to be offered in clinical contexts. However, given the limited pool of variable quality research and lack of accessible manuals, it is unlikely that this is the case. Aim: To identify specific facial expressions associated with pain behaviors using the PainChek application in residents with dementia. Design: This is a secondary analysis from a study exploring the feasibility of PainChek to evaluate the effectiveness of a social robot (PARO) intervention on pain for residents with dementia from June to November 2021. Methods: Participants experienced PARO individually five days per week for 15 min (once or twice) per day for three consecutive weeks. The PainChek app assessed each resident's pain levels before and after each session. The association between nine facial expressions and the adjusted PainChek scores was analyzed using a linear mixed model. Results: A total of 1820 assessments were completed with 46 residents. Six facial expressions were significantly associated with a higher adjusted PainChek score. Horizontal mouth stretch showed the strongest association with the score, followed by brow lowering parting lips, wrinkling of the nose, raising of the upper lip and closing eyes. However, the presence of cheek raising, tightening of eyelids and pulling at the corner lip were not significantly associated with the score. Limitations of using the PainChek app were identified. Conclusion: Six specific facial expressions were associated with observational pain scores in residents with dementia. Results indicate that automated real‐time facial analysis is a promising approach to assessing pain in people with dementia. However, it requires further validation by human observers before it can be used for decision‐making in clinical practice. Impact: Pain is common in people with dementia, while assessing pain is challenging in this group. This study generated new evidence of facial expressions of pain in residents with dementia. Results will inform the development of valid artificial intelligence‐based algorithms that will support healthcare professionals in identifying pain in people with dementia in clinical situations. Aim: To identify clinical observable items that can be used to identify dysphagia while observing a typical eating situation. Design: A three‐round e‐Delphi survey. Methods: An expert panel consisting of five nurses, eight speech language therapists and five physicians participated in this three‐round e‐Delphi survey from November 2022 to January 2023. Round 1 presented the results of a literature research conducted in September 2022 and an open question to the participants. The answers were analysed using the content analysis method. In the following rounds, the results were presented back to the participants with a request to rate them for usefulness. Means, standard deviations, ANOVA and Fisher's exact test were used to demonstrate the panel's opinion, level of agreement, demographic characteristics of the participants as well as differences between the professional groups in regard of the rating of the items. Methods and results are reported in accordance with the 'Guidance on Conducting and Reporting Delphi Studies' (CREDES). Results: The content analysis initially generated 36 items suggested by the expert panel. Seven additional items were incorporated from the literature review. In rounds 2 and 3, a 4‐point Likert scale was used to rate each item and to calculate the level of agreement. The predetermined level of agreement exceeded 70% for 23 items. Conclusion: Based on the expert opinions, it is possible for nurses to identify dysphagia in patients with dementia by using the determined 23 items while observing a typical eating situation. Patient or Public Contributions: The expert panel contributed to the creation of this study by participating in the Delphi rounds. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: The 23 items determined in this e‐Delphi study enable nurses to make dietary adjustments or consult other members of the multidisciplinary team based on available evidence, enabling complications to be avoided. Aims: Simulation offers a feasible modality to prepare nurses for challenges communicating with patients with dementia. Elderspeak communication is speech that sounds like baby talk and can lead to rejection of care by patients with dementia. However, it is unknown if simulation can be used to capture elderspeak communication in dementia care. The purpose of this mixed‐methods study was to determine if simulation accurately captures elderspeak communication by nursing staff in hospital dementia care. Design: A 3‐part mixed‐methods design in which (1) three dementia care simulations were designed and validated by a panel of experts, (2) communication by nursing staff completing each simulation was quantitatively compared to communication during actual patient care, and (3) views on the realism were explored using within‐ and across‐case coding. Methods: Three simulations using different modalities (manikin, role‐play, and standardised patient) were designed and validated with eight experts using the Lynn Method. Ten nursing staff were audio‐recorded and their communication was coded for elderspeak communication. Results for each simulation were compared using Wilcoxon signed‐rank test to recordings taken during actual dementia care encounters. Debriefings were coded for realism and results were converged. Results: The average time using elderspeak during naturalistic care was 29.9% (SD = 20.9%) which did not differ from the average amount of elderspeak used across the three simulations modalities which ranged from 29.1% to 30.4%. Qualitative results suggested a lack of realism with the manikin condition and the nursing staff indicated preference for the simulation with the standardised patient. Conclusions: Communication elicited in the dementia care simulations was congruent to communication produced in actual dementia care but preference was for the standardised patient. Implications for Patient Care: Elderspeak communication can be accurately produced in the simulated environment which indicates that simulation is a valid method for person‐centred communication training in nursing staff. Aim: To understand nurses' knowledge, beliefs and experiences affect pain management practices in hospitalised persons living with dementia (PLWD). Design: Naturalistic inquiry using qualitative descriptive design. Methods: Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 12 registered nurses who worked in one acute care hospital in Southern California from October to November 2022. Data were analysed using content analysis to identify themes. Results: Two themes were developed: improvising pain assessment, which included how pain was documented, and administration hesitancy referring to nurse's concerns about PLWD's confusion. Nurses described the challenges of assessing pain in hospitalised PLWD particularly if they were non‐verbal and/or demonstrating responsive behaviours. Nurse's years of experience, dementia stigma, and their unconscious biases affected nurses' pain management practices. Conclusions: The study findings highlight the complex challenges of pain management in hospitalised PLWD that are exacerbated by nurses' knowledge deficits, negative stereotypical beliefs, dementia stigma and unconscious biases towards older people that contributes to undermanaged pain in hospitalised PLWD. Implications: A comprehensive strategy using an implementation framework is needed to address nurse's knowledge gaps, unconscious bias, dementia stigma and techniques that enhance communication skills is suggested. Building a foundation in these areas would improve pain management in hospitalised PLWD. Impact: Improving pain management in hospitalised PLWD would improve the quality of life, decrease hospital length of stay, prevent readmissions, and improve nurse satisfaction. Aim: To synthesise evidence from the literature on hospital nurses' perceived challenges and opportunities in the care of people with dementia. Background: People with dementia often have longer lengths of hospital stay and poorer health outcomes compared to those without dementia. Nurses play a pivotal role in the care of people with dementia. However, there is a scarcity of systematic reviews that synthesise the challenges and opportunities they perceive. Methods: A mixed‐methods systematic review was conducted with a database search covering Ageline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Emcare, Embase, Medline, PsycINFO, ProQuest, Scopus and Web of Science in April 2022. In total, 27 articles that met the selection criteria were critically reviewed and included in this systematic review. Data from the selected articles were extracted and synthesised using a convergent segregated approach. Results: Three main themes and eight subthemes were identified. Theme 1 described nurse‐related factors consisting of the lack of capability in dementia care, experiencing multiple sources of stress and opportunities for nurses to improve dementia care. Theme 2 revealed people living with dementia‐related factors including complex care needs and the need to engage family carers in care. Theme 3 explained organisation‐related factors comprising the lack of organisational support for nurses and people with dementia and opportunities for quality dementia care. Conclusion: Hospital nurses experience multidimensional challenges in the care of people with dementia. Opportunities to overcome those challenges include organisational support for nurses to develop dementia care capability, reduce their stress and partner with the family caregivers. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Hospitals will need to build an enabling environment for nurses to develop their capabilities in the care of people with dementia. Aim: To describe uncertainty in surrogate decision‐making regarding end‐of‐life care for people with dementia using Mishel's reconceptualized uncertainty in illness theory. Design: Integrative literature review using Whittemore and Knafl's approach. Data Sources: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science were searched using terms such as uncertainty/unpredictability, decision‐making/advance care planning/end‐of‐life care planning, surrogate/family/caregiver/proxy and dementia. The search was initially conducted on 28 September 2021 and updated on 31 July 2023. Review Methods: Through systematic screening, 20 research articles were included in the analysis. Content related to uncertainty in surrogate decision‐making regarding end‐of‐life care was extracted and analysed, focusing on the reconceptualized uncertainty in illness theory. Results: First, surrogate uncertainty exists in various areas of surrogate decision‐making regarding end‐of‐life care. Second, antecedents of surrogate uncertainty include numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Third, surrogates exhibited some negative psychological responses to uncertainty but continually processed and structured their uncertainty through certain approaches, leading them to grow as decision‐makers. Finally, research‐based evidence on surrogates' processing of uncertainty and shifts to new life perspectives remains limited. Conclusion: Surrogates' uncertainty in decision‐making regarding end‐of‐life care for people with dementia is well characterized using the reconceptualized uncertainty in illness theory. Healthcare providers should help surrogates manage their uncertainty in surrogate decision‐making more constructively throughout the dementia trajectory. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: The findings highlight the importance of assessing how surrogates process uncertainty and gauging how to help them process uncertainty and transition to new life perspectives.
