Aims and objectives: To describe the documentation of pro re nata (PRN) medication for anxiety and to compare documentation at two hospitals providing similar psychiatric services, one that used paper charts and another that used an electronic health record (EHR). We also assessed congruence between nursing documentation and verbal reports from staff about the PRN administration process. Background: The ability to accurately document patients’ symptoms and the care given is considered a core competency of the nursing profession (Wilkinson, Nursing process and critical thinking, Saddle River, 2007); however, researchers have found poor concordance between nursing notes and verbal reports or observations of events (e.g., Marinis et al., 2010, J Clin Nurs, 19, 1544–1552) and considerable information missing (e.g., Marinis et al., 2010, J Clin Nurs, 19, 1544–1552). Additionally, the administration of PRN medication has consistently been noted to be poorly documented (e.g., Baker et al., 2008, J Clin Nurs, 17, 1122–1131). Design: The project was a mixed‐method, two‐phase study that collected data from two sites. Methods: In phase 1, nursing documentation of PRN medication administrations was reviewed in patient charts; phase 2 included verbal reports from staff about this practice. Results: Nurses using EHR documented more information than those using paper charts, including the reason for PRN administration, who initiated the administration, and effectiveness. There were some differences between written and verbal reports, including whether potential side effects were explained to patients prior to PRN administration. Conclusions: We continue the calls for attention to be paid to improving the quality of nursing documentation. Our results support the shift to using EHR, yet not relying on this method completely to ensure comprehensiveness of documentation. Relevance to clinical practice: Efforts to address the quality of documentation, particularly for PRN administration, are needed. Aims and objectives. The aims of this study were to measure skin moisture and transepidermal water loss after application of uncoated paper and to compare skin moisture and transepidermal water loss after use of uncoated paper and disposable underpads. Study design. The study was a cross-over, prospective, open-labeled, randomized trial. Sample and setting. Bedridden patients aged ≥18 years at a medical center in Korea were included. Treatment order was randomly assigned using block randomization, with a block size of 4 and an assignment rate of one-by-one. Methods. Skin moisture was measured using a Corneometer 825 and transepidermal water loss was measured using a Tewameter 300. Results. Skin moisture after application of an uncoated paper was significantly lower than observed after application of a disposable underpad (mean 40·6 and SD 13·1 vs. mean 64·6 and SD 23·7, p < 0·001). Transepidermal water loss also showed greater health scores after using uncoated paper (mean 11·1 and SD 5·7 g/m2/hour) than after applying a disposable underpad (mean 23·2 and SD 11·1 g/m2/hour, p < 0·001). There were no statistical between-group differences in room temperature, relative humidity, and body temperature. Conclusion. We found that uncoated paper was helpful in avoiding excessive moisture without adverse effects. Relevance to clinical practice. As indicated by the results of this study, uncoated paper can be applied to bed-ridden patients who required incontinence care. Background: The bed bath is an important part of nursing care. There are few studies evaluating the effects of traditional and dry bed baths on patients. Aim: This study was performed with the aim of investigating the effect of traditional and dry bed baths given to intensive care unit patients on the patients' hemodynamic parameters, the duration of the bathing procedure and the cost of consumable items. Methods: This was a randomized crossover clinical trial and a prospective study. The study was conducted in a General Surgery Intensive Care Unit with 22 intensive care patients aged 18 and over, who had a nursing diagnosis of bathing personal care deficiency. Each patient was given two types of bed baths at an interval of 24 h: a traditional bed bath and a dry bed bath performed with single‐use tissues. Immediately before each bath, in the 5th, 10th and 15th minute of bathing, immediately after bathing and 30 min after bathing, body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate and peripheral oxygen saturation measurement changes over time were compared within the group using the Friedman test. The Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used to compare the variables of bathing duration and bathing consumable item costs between the bathing procedures. Results: It was found that at the completion of traditional and dry bed bathing, the participants' body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate parameters were statistically significantly lower than before bathing, whereas peripheral oxygen saturation values showed a significant increase (p < 0.05). It was found that the dry bed bath took a statistically significantly shorter time than the traditional bed bath and that the cost of consumable bathing materials was less (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It was concluded that traditional and dry bed baths given to intensive care patients affected their hemodynamic parameters and that the dry bed bath was superior to the traditional bed bath in that it took less time and that it cost less. Traditional and dry bed baths are personal care procedures that are frequently carried out by nurses with patients in intensive care units.Bed baths may affect the hemodynamic parameters of patients in intensive care units, but few studies have evaluated their effects.Determination of the hemodynamic parameters of patients during bed baths, the duration of bathing and the cost of consumable bathing materials may help nurses to achieve patients' body hygiene in a more reliable way and to decide on and adopt measures to minimize risks. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the Roy adaptation model‐based strengthening program (RAMBSP) applied to nursing students on social media addiction, healthy lifestyle behaviours and self‐esteem. Methods: One hundred five nursing students studying at a nursing faculty of a university were included in this prospective, two‐armed (1:1), randomized controlled study. The study group (n:54) had 12 weeks of RAMBSP online group sessions. No intervention was made to the control group (n:51). The social media addiction level, which was the primary outcome of the study, was evaluated with the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) and healthy lifestyle behaviours and self‐esteem, which were secondary outcomes, were evaluated with the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Scale II (HLBS‐II) and the Rosenberg Self‐Esteem Inventory (REI). Students filled out BSMAS, HLBS‐II, and REI online via Google Forms before and after RAMBSP. Findings: At the end of the programme, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of BSMAS scores of the students in the study group (p > 0.05); however, the difference was significant in terms of HLBS‐II and REI scores (p < 0.05). It was determined that the empowerment programme increased students' awareness of social media addiction. Conclusion: It is recommended to implement programmes that will increase students' awareness of social media addiction and its effects and to conduct new research that will cover large and different sample groups. Background: A skin tear is a traumatic wound that occurs in up to one in five hospitalized patients. Nursing care includes application of a dressing to create a moist wound healing environment. Aim: To compare the effectiveness of two standard dressings (adhesive silicone foam vs. meshed silicone interface) to heal hospital‐acquired skin tear. Methods: An intention‐to‐treat pilot study was designed using a randomized, non‐inferiority trial in an Australian tertiary hospital setting. Consenting participants (n = 52) had acquired a skin tear within the previous 24 h and had agreed to a 3‐week follow‐up. Data were collected between 2014 and 2020. The primary outcome measure was wound healing at 21 days. Results: Baseline characteristics were similar in both arms. Per protocol, 86% of skin tears were fully healed at 3 weeks in the adhesive silicone foam group, compared to 59% in the meshed silicone interface group. Greater healing was observed across all skin tear categories in the adhesive silicone foam dressing group. In the intention‐to‐treat sample, healing was 69% and 42%, respectively. Conclusions: Results suggest the adhesive silicone foam dressing may be superior, as it produced clinically significant healing of skin tears at 3 weeks compared to the meshed silicone interface dressing. Accounting for potential loss to follow‐up, a sample of at least 103 participants per arm would be required to power a definitive study. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? A skin tear is a traumatic wound that is commonly acquired during hospitalization that affects older adults in particular. In hospital settings, it may occur in up to one in five patients.A variety of skin tear dressings have been used in previous studies, with healing rates ranging from 34% to 97% at 21 days; however, evidence for the most effective dressing type is inconclusive.If treated inappropriately, or left untreated, minor skin tears can become chronic or complicated wounds, yet prevalence and treatment of hospital‐acquired injuries are under‐reported. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, predictors, and outcomes of delirium in intensive care units. Background: Delirium is a common complication in intensive care units. In developing countries, it can be misdiagnosed or unrecognised. Design: Prospective cohort study reported according to the strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology criteria. Methods: We included patients who were conscious, >18 years old, and admitted to the intensive care units for at least 8 h between December 2019 and February 2020. Patients with a Richmond score of −4 or −5, mental disability, receptive aphasia and/or visual or auditory impairment were excluded from the study. Delirium was assessed using the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM‐ICU), whereas the functional outcome was assessed by the Katz Activity of Daily Living Index. Results: This study included 111 patients with a delirium incidence of 31.5%. The severity of illness was the only significant predictor of delirium. Patients with delirium had longer intensive care unit and in‐hospital stays in contrast to those without delirium. Delirium was associated with in‐hospital and 4‐month mortality but not the activities of daily living. Conclusions: Delirium is associated with increased length of stay and mortality. Further investigation to determine whether delirium management can improve outcomes is warranted. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Delirium is a common complication in the intensive care unit and can affect patients' outcomes.The incidence and the effect of delirium on patients' outcomes in low‐resource countries remain largely unexplored. Aims: Glioma patients are at high risk for postoperative delirium (POD), yet studies focusing on this population in general neurosurgical ward settings are limited. This paper investigates the incidence of POD and related risk factors in glioma patients hospitalized in general wards. Design: Prospective observational study. Methods: This prospective study included 133 adult glioma patients hospitalized in the general neurosurgery ward. In addition to collecting routine perioperative general clinical data, patients' psychological status was assessed preoperatively using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). POD was assessed within 3 days postoperatively using the Confusion of Consciousness Assessment method, twice daily. The incidence of POD was calculated, and risk factors were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results: The incidence of POD in glioma patients admitted to the general ward was 31.6% (40/133). Multivariate regression revealed advanced age (age > 50 years), frontal lobe tumour, presence of preoperative anxiety or depression, retention of a luminal drain, postoperative pain, indwelling catheter these six factors were independent risk factors for the development of delirium in patients after surgery. Conclusion: In general ward settings, supratentorial glioma patients exhibit a high risk of POD. Critical risk factors include preoperative psychological conditions, as well as postoperative pain, drainage and catheterization. Rigorous preoperative evaluations, effective pain management strategies and the integration of humanistic care principles are essential in mitigating the risk of POD for glioma patients. Relevance to Clinical Practice: In general ward settings, this study reveals the high occurrence of POD in glioma patients and identifies preoperative psychological states, age, tumour location and several postoperative factors as significant risk factors for POD, which provides a framework for targeted interventions. By integrating these insights into clinical practice, healthcare teams can better identify glioma patients at risk for POD and implement preventive measures, thereby enhancing recovery and overall care quality for glioma patients in general neurosurgical wards. Aims: To assess the effects of COVID‐19 pandemic on clinical variables as part of the routine clinical monitoring of patients with chronic diseases in primary care. Design: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted in primary care centres of the Andalusian Health Service. Methods: Data were recorded before the pandemic (T1), during the declaration of the state of emergency (T2) and in the transition phase (T3). The Barthel index and the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ) were used to analyse functional and cognitive changes at the three time points. HbA1c, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, BMI and lipid levels were assessed as clinical variables. Descriptive statistics and non‐parametric chi‐square test were used for analysis. STROBE checklist was used for the preparation of this paper. Results: A total fo148 patients with chronic conditions were included in the analysis. Data analysis revealed in T2 only significant reductions in BMI, total levels of cholesterol and HDL during the onset of the pandemic. Barthel Index, SPMSQ, blood pressure and triglycerides and LDL levels worsened in T2, and the negative effects were maintained in T3. Compared to pre‐pandemic values, HbA1c levels improved in T3, but HDL levels worsened. Conclusions: COVID‐19 has drastically disrupted several functional, cognitive and biological variables. These results may be useful in identifying clinical parameters that deserve closer attention in the case of a new health crisis. Further studies are needed to assess the potential impacts of each specific chronic condition. Aims and Objectives: To identify the most accurate postoperative delirium screening tools for detecting postoperative delirium among patients who underwent general anaesthesia surgery in general wards. Background: The lack of detection of postoperative delirium can negatively affect the patient's condition, along with their postoperative treatment and rehabilitation, and it can prolong their hospitalisation, persists cognitive dysfunction and increases mortality. Screening for postoperative delirium in hospitalised patients as nursing assessment is routine clinical practice for early detection. Design: A systematic review and meta‐analysis. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, KoreaMed and Cochrane electronic databases were searched using the key words delirium, postoperative, assessment or screening, and adult for articles published up to April 2020, with no limit on the year of publishing. Only prospective cohort studies reporting sensitivity and specificity values were included. We followed the recommendations of the Cochrane Handbook of Diagnostic Test Accuracy Reviews and the PRISMA checklist. The Quality Assessment of the Diagnostic Accuracy Studies‐2 tool was used for data extraction and quality assessment, while a bivariate random‐effects meta‐analysis model was used for pooling and comparing diagnostic accuracy and providing a summary of evidence. Results: Six delirium assessment tools were evaluated from nine papers including 3088 patients. Due to the limited number of papers, the meta‐analysis included the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) and its variants, Delirium Detection Score (DDS) and Nurses' Delirium Screening Checklist (NuDESC). Overall, NuDESC demonstrated higher sensitivity than CAM or DDS, while all showed high specificity (0.90 or greater). Conclusion: This review suggested that NuDESC can be employed as an accurate screening tool with high specificity for assessing postoperative delirium during routine checkups. However, it is necessary to consider suitable cut‐off values, which is the reference point, in accordance with the clinical setting and the patients' condition. Relevance to clinical practice: NuDESC reported the best evidence of diagnostic accuracy, and we recommend clinical nurses to employ this easy‐to‐use and validated tool for daily screening of postoperative delirium in general wards to facilitate its early detection and the accurate estimation of its prevalence. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for household transmission of the omicron variant of SARS‐CoV‐2. Background: The household infection rate has been reported to be higher for the omicron variant than for non‐omicron variants of SARS‐CoV‐2. Determination of the risk factors for household transmission of the omicron variant is therefore important. Design: A Retrospective Cohort Study was conducted. Methods: When family members of health care workers (HCWs) were found to be infected with SARS‐CoV‐2, the HCWs had to receive two nucleic acid amplification tests for SARS‐CoV‐2: immediately after and 5 to 10 days after the onset of COVID‐19 in the family members. Risk factors of household transmission were analysed by comparing cases (HCWs infected with SARS‐CoV‐2) and controls (HCWs not infected with SARS‐CoV‐2) using multivariable analysis. Results: Unvaccinated status (OR: 3.97), age of index cases (≤6 years) (OR: 1.94) and staying at home with index cases (OR: 10.18) were risk factors for household transmission. Conclusion: If there is a strong desire to avoid household infection, family members infected with SARS‐CoV‐2 should live separately during the period of viral shedding. Summary: Longitudinal research has grown in popularity in the field of management and organizations. However, the literature has neglected to consider the important ways in which researchers' temporal decisions can influence observed change in longitudinal studies. Researchers must make a set of temporal decisions to capture change, such as the temporal precision of the hypothesized form of change, the selection of a sample that is expected to exhibit the change, the choice of variables to be measured repeatedly, the frequency of measurements, and the time interval between measurements. However, these decisions typically are based on "educated guesses," which makes their effects on the observed change unclear. In this paper, we develop a conceptual framework to explain how temporal decisions influence observed change and validate it by meta‐analyzing longitudinal studies (k = 268). Specifically, we found that observed change is affected by hypotheses (i.e., temporal precision), the sample (i.e., presence of a change trigger), variables (i.e., variable type and rating source), and measurement occasions (i.e., frequency and time interval). These findings offer insights into the importance of making informed temporal decisions. The implications of our findings are broad and applicable across research streams and theoretical traditions. Aim: This study aimed to explore the utility of latent profile analysis of illness perception, in comparison to treating illness perception as several dimensions, to predict breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours among Chinese breast cancer patients. Methods: This is a 3‐month longitudinal study. From August 2019 to January 2021, patients who recently underwent breast cancer surgery including axillary lymphadenectomy were recruited. Illness perception and risk management behaviours were measured by breast cancer‐related lymphedema specific questionnaires before discharge following surgery (n = 268) and at 3 months postsurgery (n = 213), respectively. Results: Treating illness perception as several dimensions, 'illness coherence' and 'timeline (cyclical)' dimensions were found to be significantly associated with breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours. Using the latent profile analysis, two illness perception profiles were identified and significant differences were revealed in breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours between them. Overall, illness perception profiles explained smaller amounts of variability in breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours than illness perception dimensions. Conclusion: Future studies could combine these two different perspectives of illness perception regarding breast cancer‐related lymphedema into the design of interventions to improve breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours. Aims: This work aimed to classify the elderly according to fall risk factors and to identify the characteristics of the latent classes. Background: Falls mainly occur due to combinations of various risk factors, and each older adult has a different combination of risk factors. Design: This was a secondary data analysis using data from the 2017 National Survey of Older Persons conducted by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare. Methods: Latent class analysis and multiple logistic regression were performed using data from 1556 older adults who experienced at least one fall during 1 year (1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016). Indicator variables included eight fall risk factors. Results: A 3‐class solution was selected according to acceptable goodness of fit. The 'healthy falls risk class' included over half of the cohort, and the comprised older adults did not show typical health problems. The 'complex falls risk class' included older people with physical and mental problems, and the 'musculoskeletal falls risk class' included older people with osteoarthritis and back pain. Conclusion: The results identified combinations of fall risk factors and characteristics among community‐dwelling older adults that may contribute to the planning of effective fall prevention programmes. Aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of cryotherapy with frozen gloves for the prevention of the chemotherapy‐induced peripheral neuropathy of the hand. Background: Most breast cancer patients receive chemotherapy; consequently, patients frequently experience adverse effects of chemotherapy‐induced peripheral neuropathy. Methods: A quasi‐experimental and prospective self‐controlled study was conducted. Breast cancer patients wore frozen glove on the dominant hand for 90 min during their weekly treatment with paclitaxel (80 mg/m2). Treatment of the dominant hand, the intervention group, was continued for 12 weeks. The non‐dominant hand was considered the control group. Results: A total of 22 patients participated in this study, and only one patient did not reach the cumulative dose (960 mg/m2). Findings show that the incidences of sensory and motor symptoms of chemotherapy‐induced peripheral neuropathies at the following times (Time 1 to Time 4) were significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group. However, although the incidences of motor symptoms were lower in the experimental group than in the control group, a significant difference was shown only at Time 4. Additionally, both groups of patients reported that their incidence of sensory symptoms were higher than those of motor symptoms. Conclusion: Cryotherapy with frozen gloves is useful in reducing both the sensory and motor symptoms of the chemotherapy‐induced peripheral neuropathy of the hands. Aim: This quasi‐experimental study aimed to explore effects of walking exercise on disease activity, sleep quality, and quality of life among individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus. Methods: After recruiting people with systemic lupus erythematosus from a hospital in Taiwan between October 2020 and June 2021, participants were free to opt to receive one walking exercise programme plus standard care for 3 months or to membership of a control group receiving routine care. Primary outcomes included Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Score, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale, and a quality‐of‐life scale for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, namely, LupusQoL. These scales were administered first, at baseline and later, within 1 week following completion of the intervention. Between‐group effects were compared using generalized estimating equations with adjustment for baseline variables. Results: The experimental and control groups each included 40 participants. Multivariate analysis indicated that adding the walking exercise programme into routine care elevated sleep quality and LupusQoL (the latter in the subscales of physical health, planning, and intimate relationships), except for disease activity. Conclusion: Findings of this study supported the addition of walking exercise as part of routine care for people with systemic lupus erythematosus and may be a reference in the provision of adequate care for these patients. Aim: To investigate the mental well‐being of early career nurses working in the United Kingdom during the COVID‐19 pandemic, with a particular emphasis on symptoms related to post‐traumatic stress disorder. Design: A longitudinal survey study. Methods: Data were acquired at three timepoints during the COVID‐19 pandemic (between May 2020 and March 2021) to determine whether symptoms of post‐traumatic stress disorder persisted over time. Quantitative measures of well‐being were supplemented with survey data on the nurses' experiences of working during the pandemic. Results: Twenty‐seven per cent of participants suffered from persistent symptoms of post‐traumatic stress while working as nurses during the pandemic. The nurses' baseline resilience, as well as their perception of the quality of their work environment, were significant negative predictors of symptoms of post‐traumatic stress. Participants identified a range of strategies that would have helped them during the crisis, including visible, consistent and empathetic leadership, adequate training and a supportive work environment. Conclusion: The context of the pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of the psychological well‐being of early career nurses in the workforce. Immediate implementation of some of the more simple interventions suggested in this paper would provide early career nurses with rapid support. More complex support mechanisms should be given immediate consideration, with a view to implementation in the longer term. Implications for the Profession: This study contributes new knowledge about the psychological well‐being of early career nurses working during the pandemic and suggests support mechanisms that will be crucial for the retention of these nurses in the profession. A measurement of resilience may be useful for determining the appropriate level of support to provide to early career nurses. Impact: Early career nurses are vulnerable to attrition from the profession. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of prenatal breast‐feeding education provided to pregnant women who experience fear of breast‐feeding in the COVID‐19 pandemic period. Methods: A prospective randomized controlled trial study was conducted with 128 pregnant women (64 in the experimental group and 64 in the control group) between November 2021 and February 2022. The data were collected via the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, the Breastfeeding Motivation Scale and the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale to assess fear, motivation and attitudes regarding breast‐feeding. The pregnant women in the experimental group were provided with and education programme on 'safe breastfeeding in the COVID‐19 pandemic'. The breast‐feeding education included in standard care was given to the control group after pre‐test data collection was completed. Results: The significant differences in the mean Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Breastfeeding Motivation Scale and Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale scores of the groups were in favour of the experimental group (P < 0.05). It was determined that in the first postnatal month, in the experimental group, the numbers of women who believed that their breast‐feeding was not affected by COVID‐19 and the numbers of infants solely breastmilk‐fed were higher compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Prenatal breast‐feeding education about safe breast‐feeding in the COVID‐19 pandemic period can reduce fears of breast‐feeding and increase motivation and approving attitudes regarding breast‐feeding. Aims: This study aims to measure any changes in the marital relationship during the first year after a diagnosis of prostate cancer, identify the demographic characteristics that influenced such changes, and measure changes related to health‐related quality of life (HRQoL). Background: Knowledge is limited on the impact of a diagnosis of prostate cancer on the marital relationship and HRQoL of patients and their spouses. Design: A 1‐year longitudinal study. Methods: Data were collected from five Finnish hospitals between October 2013 and January 2017. Of the 350 recruited couples (N = 700), 179 patients and 166 spouses completed the Marital Questionnaire and the RAND 36‐Item Health Survey 1 year after diagnosis. Results: No major changes were found in the marital relationship during the follow‐up period. The spouses reported statistically significant changes in their marital relationships, but the patients did not. Furthermore, changes in the marital relationship were not associated with the patients' HRQoL. Among spouses, emotional well‐being was associated with changes in the marital relationship. Conclusion: The marital relationship was relevant in terms of the spouses' HRQoL during the first year after a diagnosis of prostate cancer. Nurses and other healthcare providers should assess counselling and support provided to spouses individually. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aim: This study examined the feasibility of integrating actigraphy devices into orthopaedic surgical settings to assess the concurrent validity between objective actigraphy data and PROMIS measures. Additionally, the association between changes in actigraphy data and longitudinal changes in PROMIS measures was examined. Methods: Data were collected from 17 participants using actigraphy devices the week prior to and after orthopaedic surgery from 02/2019 to 03/2020. Participants completed PROMIS measures (Physical Function, Sleep Disturbance, Pain Interference) preoperatively and up to 6 months postoperatively. Nonparametric correlations (rs) assessed for concurrent validity. Linear mixed‐effects models examined the association between changes in actigraphy data and PROMIS measures. Results: Prolonged wake after sleep onset was associated with increased sleep disturbances (rs = 0.49; p = 0.045) and pain interference (rs = 0.51; p = 0.04). Changes in pain interference were correlated with increased awakenings (rs = 0.54; p = 0.03). Increased wake after sleep onset was associated with worsening sleep disturbance (β = 0.12; p = 0.01) and pain interference scores over the postoperative period (β = 0.12; p = 0.02). Conclusions: This study is among the first to examine changes in objective actigraphy data and longitudinal PROMIS measures following orthopaedic surgery and illustrates the feasibility of incorporating actigraphy into surgical settings to evaluate postoperative recovery. Aim: The aim of this work is to identify the pressure ulcer risk profiles of hospitalized patients with reference to Braden Scale subscales. Methods: A total of 2996 hospitalized Portuguese participants were screened using the Braden Scale. A hierarchical and nonhierarchical cluster analysis was conducted, with ethical approval. Results: Five risk profiles (clusters) based on the first risk assessments were identified. Regarding the Braden Scale total score, two profiles with high risk and three profiles with low risk of pressure ulcer development were identified. All clusters were statistically significantly different in terms of sociodemographic and clinical variables. When the first and the last risk assessments were compared, all the clusters improved the Braden Scale total score on the last risk assessment, except Cluster 4 (low‐risk category). Clusters 3, 4 and 5, which were classified as low risk, decreased in several Braden subscales at the last risk assessment. Conclusions: The classification of low risk may misguide the early identification of patients with individual risk factors. Increasing the awareness of health care professionals for the importance of risk assessment of each Braden subscale is necessary for pressure ulcer prevention. We recommend the implementation of strategies for early identification of patients at risk at local and national levels. Summary statement: What is already known about the topic? Background: No study has investigated sleep‐related environmental factors in patients according to their functional independence measure (FIM) cognitive scores. Aims: The aim of this study is to examine the associations between environmental factors such as noise and sleep latency according to the FIM cognitive scores among inpatients in rehabilitation wards. Design This is a prospective longitudinal study. Methods: This study measured the sleep state using a bed‐based actigraphy, environmental data from Environmental Sensor®, and medical record information of 33 inpatients in the rehabilitation wards during 2018. A linear mixed‐effect model was used to analyse the associations between sleep latency and environmental factors. Participants were grouped according to high or low FIM cognitive scores. Results: The average patient age was 77.2 ± 10.9 years, and 48.5% were male. In the high FIM cognitive score group, the loudness and frequency of noise exceeding 40 dB during sleep latency were significantly associated with sleep latency. In the low FIM cognitive score group, only the noise frequency was associated with sleep latency, and intra‐individual variance was larger than that of the high group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that providing night care with attention to subdued noise is important, particularly for patients with low cognitive functional independence levels measured by the FIM cognitive score. Aim(s): To explore vital sign assessment (both complete and incomplete sets of vital signs), and escalation of care per policy and nursing interventions in response to clinical deterioration. Design: This cohort study is a secondary analysis of data from the Prioritising Responses of Nurses To deteriorating patient Observations cluster randomised controlled trial of a facilitation intervention on nurses' vital sign measurement and escalation of care for deteriorating patients. Methods: The study was conducted in 36 wards at four metropolitan hospitals in Victoria, Australia. Medical records of all included patients from the study wards during three randomly selected 24‐h periods within the same week were audited at three time points: pre‐intervention (June 2016), and at 6 (December 2016) and 12 months (June 1017) post‐intervention. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise the study data, and relationships between variables were examined using chi‐square test. Results: A total of 10,383 audits were conducted. At least one vital sign measurement was documented every 8 h in 91.6% of audits, and a complete set of vital signs was documented every 8 h in 83.1% of audits. There were pre‐Medical Emergency Team, Medical Emergency Team or Cardiac Arrest Team triggers in 25.8% of audits. When triggers were present, a rapid response system call occurred in 26.8% of audits. There were 1350 documented nursing interventions in audits with pre‐Medical Emergency Team (n = 2403) or Medical Emergency Team triggers (n = 273). One or more nursing interventions were documented in 29.5% of audits with pre‐Medical Emergency Team triggers and 63.7% of audits with Medical Emergency Team triggers. Conclusion: When rapid response system triggers were documented, there were gaps in escalation of care per policy; however, nurses undertook a range of interventions within their scope of practice in response to clinical deterioration. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Medical and surgical ward nurses in acute care wards frequently engage in vital sign assessment. Interventions by medical and nurgical nurses may occur prior to, or in parallel with calling the rapid response system. Nursing interventions are a key but under‐recognised element of the organisational response to deteriorating patients. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Nurses engage in a range of nursing interventions to manage deteriorating patients, (aside from rapid response system activation) that are not well understood, nor well described in the literature to date. Aim: To investigate the current condition and degree of fear of disease progression and associated factors in patients with mild or common type COVID‐19. Background: At the end of 2019, COVID‐19 spread from Wuhan in Hubei Province throughout China. Confirmed cases and deaths have since been reported in many countries around the world. However, fear of progression in these patients has been poorly explored. Methods: During February 2020, we recruited 114 patients with mild or common type COVID‐19 admitted to a Fangcang shelter hospital. We assessed patients' degree of fear using the simplified Fear of Progression Questionnaire (Chinese version). Multiple regression analysis was applied to explore potential factors. Results: The fear of disease progression scores of patients with mild or common COVID‐19 was at the low‐to‐moderate level. Current unemployment, disease duration of 28 days or more and not having a spouse diagnosed with COVID‐19 were factors potentially associated with fear of progression. Conclusion: With a high prevalence of fear of disease progression in patients with COVID‐19, the risk of psychological effects from the pandemic is significant and fear of progression is one of the manifestations. The need for psychological support services for patients should be included in all pandemic and disaster planning. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? The research programme has the following aims, (a) to clarify clinical nurse leader practice, (b) develop and empirically validate a translational model of frontline care delivery that includes clinical nurse leader practice and (c) delineate the patterns of and critical outcomes of successful implementation of the clinical nurse leader care model.This programme of research follows a knowledge‐building trajectory involving multiple study designs in both qualitative (grounded theory, case study) and quantitative (descriptive, correlational and quasi‐experimental) traditions.Multiple mixed methods within a system‐based participatory framework were used to conduct this programme of implementation–effectiveness research.Findings are demonstrating how the clinical nurse leader care model, as a complex system‐level intervention, can be implemented in diverse healthcare contexts to make a difference to patient care quality and safety. Aims and objectives. To examine the effect of the introduction of an electronic nursing documentation system on the efficiency of documentation in a residential aged care facility. Background. Modern technology has the potential to free caregivers in residential aged care facilities from their burden of paper documentation and allow them more time to care for residents. To date, there is inadequate evidence to verify this assumption. Design. Longitudinal cohort study with work sampling method for data collection. Methods. This study was conducted between 2009-2011; two months before and 3, 6, 12 and 23 months after implementation of an electronic documentation system. A work classification tool was used by an observer to record documentation activities being performed on paper or on a computer by the caregivers. Results. When compared with the proportion of time caregivers spent on documentation in the preimplementation period, personal carers' proportion reduced at three months after implementation. The proportion increased from six months and then dropped at 23 months. Recreational activity officers' proportion increased at three months after implementation. It stabilised at six months and increased again at 12 months. At 23 months, the proportion returned to the preimplementation level. Less than half of the caregivers' time on documentation after implementation was associated with computer-related tasks. Conclusions. Introduction of an electronic documentation system may not necessarily lead to efficiency in documentation for the caregivers. Charting some information items on paper and others on a computer may hinder realization of documentation efficiency. Relevance to clinical practice. To optimise the efficiency benefit of electronic documentation in a residential aged care facility, it is not only necessary to automate all nursing forms but also to ensure that the system is aligned with caregivers' documentation practice. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between family caregivers' health‐related quality of life and health outcomes in care recipients. Methods: A total of 160 female caregivers in Japan were initially assessed using self‐reported baseline questionnaires to determine physical and mental aspects of their health‐related quality of life. Based on these scores, they were divided into three groups: lower, middle, and higher quality of life. We followed up with the 133 participants (after excluding those that did not respond) 6 years later to assess the health of their care recipients; 36 caregivers continued to provide home care, while 97 reported that their care recipient had died or been admitted into institutionalized care. Results: Statistically, a higher risk for care recipients' health deterioration was strongly associated with the mental component score in the lower caregivers' quality of life group of than for the middle group, after adjusting for the care recipients' age, health status, and caregivers' age at baseline. There was no significant association between deterioration of health of care recipients and physical component scores of the caregivers. Conclusion: Caregivers' poor health‐related quality of life, particularly poor mental health, may be linked to the deterioration of care recipients' health. Aim: We explored the feasibility of a long‐term but low‐frequency psychological preventive intervention in a high school setting. Background: High school students may experience depression; psychological interventions to improve social and cognitive skills may be useful to decrease such depression. A long‐term but low‐frequency intervention may be feasible in this setting because of its minimal time demands and lack of need for specialist human resources Design We conducted a single‐arm longitudinal descriptive study with an intervention applied six times over 2 years in one high school. Method: We conducted a psychological preventive intervention with 94 high school students in one school for 2 years (April 2014 to March 2016). This intervention aimed to improve social and cognitive skills. We measured social skills, cognitive distortion, and depression five times during the 2‐year period, through a self‐report scale. Results/Findings Scores for maintaining relationship skills tended to increase over the 2 years. However, depression did not decrease over the intervention period. Conclusion: Although our research did not include control conditions and the intervention did not decrease depression, the six‐session programme for high school adolescents improved an aspect of social skills that is a preventive factor against depression. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? High school students may experience mental issues, but how to address this problem has been neglected.Psychological preventive programmes are effective to reduce depression in high school students.It is difficult to manage time and human resources to implement interventions. Aims: The study aims were to provide a comprehensive description of the short‐ and long‐term experience of necrotizing soft‐tissue infections from the patient and family perspective. Further, to describe how unmet needs related to diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation are experienced. And finally, to present patient and family recommendations for improvements. Design: The study had a longitudinal qualitative multi‐centre two‐country design. Methods: Qualitative content analysis was applied to 87 semi‐structured interviews involving 50 participants from Denmark and Sweden. In most interviews, patient and family were interviewed separately. Data were collected in 2015–2018. This is the fifth and final paper reporting the study. Findings After initial inductive coding, we constructed a matrix of four timepoints (pre‐admission, acute admission, after 6 months and after 2 years) describing physical, psychological and social responses and recommendations for improvement. We analysed deductively according to timepoints and predefined categories describing patient and family responses to life with necrotizing soft‐tissue infections. The study suggested that physical recovery was obtained before psychological recovery. The aftermath of job loss and lacking social services amplified the burden. Patients still recovering experienced lack of understanding from family, friends and professionals that failed to recognize the complexity of their suffering. Conclusions: Half of the patients in our study reported making a full recovery while the remaining described issues still unresolved 2 years after intensive care unit discharge. Predisposing factors and symptoms align with other studies of critical illness. During the acute stage, patients receive state‐of‐the art treatment and care, but as time passes, rehabilitation becomes less available and less patient‐centred. Impact The study will increase nurses' understanding of patient and family suffering and complexity of long‐term survival of necrotizing soft‐tissue infections. Aim: To examine the diagnostic reasoning skills of two nurse practitioner student cohorts. Introduction: Nurse practitioners continue to play a pivotal role in health care provision. Diagnostic reasoning is a core skill of advanced practice. A comparative diagnostic reasoning study between two student cohorts was undertaken between 2018 and 2019. Methods: A validated diagnostic reasoning scale was completed by nurse practitioner students in the United Kingdom and the United States of America at the beginning and end of their clinical placements. The study utilized descriptive quantitative statistics from the data submitted by 22 survey respondents from an online survey. Results: Analysis of the diagnostic reasoning skills suggested there was a difference in the structural memory scores when compared with the beginning of their clinical placements and the final semester of their clinical placements. Conclusion: Diagnostic reasoning skills are a core skill of advanced practice. As students progress through their training, these skills improve. Despite the statistical difference in diagnostic reasoning scores, caution should be made in determining any larger implications due to the small number of participants in this study. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of the methods used in endotracheal tube fixation on haemodynamic parameters (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation) during endotracheal suction. Methods: The sample of this prospective, parallel two‐armed, single‐blind non‐randomized clinical trial study included 86 intubated patients treated in the cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit between September 2016 and December 2017. The endotracheal tube was fixed with tube holders in the intervention group (n = 43), whereas the endotracheal tube was fixed with plasters in the control group (n = 43). The patients' haemodynamic parameters were measured before, during, at the end of suction, and 5 and 15 min after suction. Results: In comparison with the patients with plasters, patients with tube holders had significantly lower systolic blood pressure 15 min after endotracheal suction and significantly lower diastolic blood pressure during and at the end of endotracheal suction. Oxygen saturation of the patients with tube holder during, at the end, and following 5 min after endotracheal suction were higher than patients with plaster. Heart rate was not affected during endotracheal suction in both groups. Conclusion: The study showed the tube holder affected the haemodynamic parameters during endotracheal suction less than the plaster. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aims: To explore the factors related to hospital‐to‐home transitional self‐monitoring blood glucose behaviour among patients with diabetes‐related foot ulcer. Background: The 30‐day readmission rate of patients with diabetes‐related foot ulcer can be reduced when good glycaemic control is achieved. The practice of self‐monitoring blood glucose promotes optimal glycaemic control. Design A comparative descriptive study. Methods: In this study, 200 participants, who had been hospitalized due to diabetes‐related foot ulcer, were recruited from August 2017 to July 2018. Before participants were discharged from the hospital, psychosocial factors (family support, threat belief, self‐efficacy and knowledge) and pre‐hospitalization self‐monitoring blood glucose behaviour were collected using a structured questionnaire. Then, after discharge, self‐monitoring blood glucose behaviour delivery was collected again. Results: Five variables explained 47% of the variance in the delivery of self‐monitoring of blood glucose at home. The delivery of hospital‐to‐home transitional self‐monitoring blood glucose behaviour was more likely for individuals with higher pre‐discharge self‐efficacy, higher post‐discharge self‐efficacy, more attention to pre‐hospitalization glycaemic status and post‐discharge insulin usage and those without an insensitive foot. Conclusion: Self‐monitoring blood‐glucose behaviour should be promoted among post‐discharge patients with diabetes‐related foot ulcer. The modifiable factors identified in this study can be integrated into the discharge plan. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aim: The aim of this study is to develop and to test the construct validity and reliability of the Vietnamese versions of the Evidence‐Based Practice Attitude and Evidence‐Based Practice Beliefs scales. Methods: This is a psychometric evaluation study. Three hundred and fifty‐three nurses and midwives were recruited from a national hospital in Vietnam from September to December 2018. Data were obtained from two scales. Content validity, face validity and construct validity measures were all conducted, whereas exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed from data collected from two cohorts of participants. Cronbach's alpha coefficient represented reliability, and data were analysed in SPSS 20 and AMOS 24. Results: The four‐factor model developed with openness, requirements, appeal and divergence factors accounted for 55% of total variance in the Attitude scale. A three‐factor model labelled as value beliefs, knowledge beliefs and resource beliefs with 59% of total variance was explained in the Beliefs scale. Cronbach's α coefficients were.72 for the Attitude scale and.81 for the Beliefs scale. Conclusions: The two scales could be used to assess Vietnamese nurses' attitudes and beliefs to adopt evidence‐based practice enabling hospitals to align individual and organizational goals for developing evidence‐based practice and enable comparison of the results with international samples. Aims: To investigate the change and associated factors of care needs within 6 months post‐discharge in older people with hospital‐associated disability, and the relationship between time‐varying care needs and physical function. Background: Older people with hospital‐associated disability will have various care needs post‐discharge. Understanding their care needs will help to improve their health. However, studies on this population are still limited. Design: A longitudinal study. Methods: The older people who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected in 2 tertiary hospitals in Zhejiang Province, China. The questionnaire survey method was used to collect data about socio‐demographic characteristics, physical function and care needs. The data of 375 older people who completed follow‐up were analysed using logistic regression analysis, generalised estimating equations and generalised additive mixed model. We followed STROBE checklist for reporting the study. Results: The care needs of the older people with hospital‐associated disability declined unevenly, it decreased rapidly in the first three months, and then flattening out. The percentage of people with care needs in each dimension decreased over time, but daily care and rehabilitation needs were consistently more important. Socio‐demographic factors and physical function had different effects on need at different time points, the physical function was the main factor among them. There were non‐linear relationships between the physical function and different care needs with different inflection points. Conclusion: This research revealed change patterns of the care needs of older people with hospital‐associated disability post‐discharge and the non‐linear relationship between physical function and care needs. These findings may help healthcare professionals and caregivers to provide accurate care. Relevance to clinical practice: The findings can be used to identify effective approaches to address the care needs of older people with hospital‐associated disability based on the time of discharge, in conjunction with age, education, and especially physical function, which will promote the justify allocation of nursing resources. Aim: Women with a history of recurrent miscarriage are a vulnerable population. This study aimed to examine changes and relationships among anxiety, depression and social support across three trimesters of pregnancy in women with a history of recurrent miscarriage. Methods: A prospective, longitudinal study was employed. A convenience sample of 166 pregnant women with a history of recurrent miscarriage completed the measures at their 6–12, 20–24 and 32–36 gestational weeks. Results: The prevalence of anxiety at early, middle and late pregnancy was 47.6%, 36.1% and 32.5%, respectively, whereas that of depression was 38%, 34.3% and 31.3%, respectively. Social support scores increased from early pregnancy to middle pregnancy then remained in late pregnancy. There were correlations among anxiety, depression and social support across pregnancy. Conclusions: Anxiety and depression were highly prevalent in pregnant women with a history of recurrent miscarriage, especially in early pregnancy when the level of social support was the lowest. Social support is an essential buffer against anxiety and depression throughout the pregnancy. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Background: Child hospitalization is a stressful experience for both children and their parents. Parents should establish effective communication with healthcare professionals to be able to participate in the care of their children in the hospital environment. Aims and Objectives: The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of parental participation in the care of hospitalized children on parent satisfaction and parent and child anxiety. Design The design used for this study was randomized controlled trial. Methods: The study data were collected between 1 February and 31 May 2016. Frequency, percentage, paired t test, Mann–Whitney U and Wilcoxon were used to analyse the data. Results: The study compared the parents' pretest and posttest scores on the anxiety and found that there was a statistically significant difference between the posttest scores of intervention and control groups. There was also a statistically significant difference parental participation and overall satisfaction subscales of the parent satisfaction as well as their total scores and mean scores. Comparison of the children's posttest scores on the anxiety inventory also found a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: The study concluded that parental participation in the care of hospitalized children increases parent satisfaction with healthcare, and reduces anxiety of both parents and children. Aim: To estimate the incidence rates of surgical site infection and identify the independent effect of perioperative hypothermia on the incidence of this type of infection in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Background: Around the world, surgical site infection is a frequent complication in surgical patients, mainly causing increased morbidity and mortality rates and health service costs. Design A prospective cohort study. Methods: The 484 patients were recruited from a large private philanthropic hospital in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, from July 2016 to May 2017. Crude and adjusted models were constructed for the hypothermia indicators to assess the effect of this exposure on surgical site infection. Results: The incidence rate of surgical site infection was 20.25% (n = 98). The attributable fraction to exposed to hypothermia was >40%. A greater probability of developing surgical site infection (relative risk = 1.89) was found for patients who experienced body temperatures <36.0°C (from entry time into the operating room until the end of the surgery) for more than five hypothermic episodes or longer than 75 min. Conclusion: Perioperative hypothermia was an independent risk factor for surgical site infection. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Around the world, surgical site infection is a complication that leads to damage to the patient and increased costs for the health services. Background: The DigniCap System is an effective scalp cooling device for the prevention of chemotherapy‐induced alopecia in early breast cancer patients. Aim: This prospective study was designed to confirm the efficacy and tolerability of the device, to explore potential factors associated with its efficacy and to collect data on patient perceptions and satisfaction. Methods: Between January 2016 and June 2018, 163 early breast cancer patients eligible for adjuvant chemotherapy were enrolled. Hair loss was assessed using the Dean scale, where a score of 0–2 (hair loss ≤50%) was defined as successful. Results: Hair preservation was successful in 57% of patients in the overall series. The proportion was even higher (81%) in the patient subgroup treated with a paclitaxel and trastuzumab regimen. Side effects (feeling cold, headache, head heaviness, scalp and cervical pain) were mild to moderate and did not correlate with the rate of hair loss. Lifestyle, anthropometric factors and hair characteristics failed to be associated with device efficacy. Conclusions: The DigniCap System was well tolerated and found to be effective in preventing alopecia in early breast cancer patients. Our study failed to identify factors other than type of chemotherapy regimen associated with hair preservation. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? While the DigniCap System is known to be effective in preventing chemotherapy‐induced alopecia, nearly 50% of patients do not benefit from its use, and its side effects can be relevant.Identifying factors associated with the efficacy of scalp hypothermia is particularly important to avert the side effects of scalp cooling in patients unlikely to gain any advantage and to avoid unnecessarily prolonging chemotherapy chair occupation in patients at high risk of hair loss. Aims: The main aims of the study were to identify changes in nurse consultant numbers in mental health services, identify post holder characteristics and factors influencing number of posts. Method: We used a triangulated mixed methods approach comprised of a longitudinal examination of national workforce data, a national cross‐sectional survey of post holder characteristics and semi‐structured interviews with directors of nursing. Results: Of 58 mental health organizations, 51 (88%) responded, identifying 123 nurse consultant posts, and a range of 0–12 posts per organization. One in 229 mental health nurses and 1 in 186 learning disability nurses were nurse consultant. An average of 40% of nurse consultants' work time was reported as being in clinical practice. Themes identified as important in relation to role sustainability were cost and value, contribution of individual post holders, role clarity and domains of work. Discussion: Nurse consultants are represented to a greater extent in the mental health service workforce than in nursing generally, but their roles often lack clarity. Attitudes of local professional leaders and national policies are likely to affect post numbers. Implications for practice: Developing and sustaining nurse consultant roles requires role clarity and active support from nurse leaders. Aims: This study explores how women diagnosed with breast cancer may be supported by physicians and nurses during physical and existential changes related to oncoplastic breast surgery in Denmark. The following research questions were addressed: (a) how do women experience oncoplastic breast surgery, and (b) how does cancer treatment affect their body image? Design: A descriptive qualitative study design with a six‐step thematic analysis influenced by Braun and Clarke was applied in this study. This paper has been prepared in accordance with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research. Methods: Fourteen in‐depth interviews with seven women diagnosed with breast cancer were conducted from August 2018 to March 2019. In this qualitative study, data analysis was performed concurrent with data construction, recognizing that the process of analysis and making sense of data should start during the interviews. We explicitly frame the discussion of the findings in a theory of embodiment influenced by Merleau‐Ponty, consistent with the construct of exploring human experiences to generate meaningful knowledge for applied practice. Results: Two overall themes with related subthemes were identified: (1) 'Treatment is required for life‐threatening cancer', and (2) 'Striving for a new normal body'. Across both themes, women's experiences reflected a 'time pendulum' as they contemplated their past identity, their current rationale and their transition to a future beyond breast cancer with a changed body. Conclusion: Participants reflected on their past, present and future when facing an altered body image caused by their breast cancer diagnosis and oncoplastic breast surgery. The participants in the study expressed broad levels of satisfaction with the results of the oncoplastic breast surgery. The reconstructed breast helped them to live normally again, in particular maintaining interpersonal relationships. Breast reconstruction supported participants' embodiment experiences and redefinition of their 'new normal'. Impact This study showed the dynamic changes in self‐definition from receiving a breast cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment to oncoplastic breast surgery. The main finding of self‐redefinition was from the perspective of breast cancer women who were in a period of transition between post‐diagnosis and consultation for oncoplastic breast surgery. The findings indicate that advanced nurse specialists in the field of oncoplastic breast surgery can enhance psychosocial wellbeing and support women pre‐ and post‐operatively by focusing on patient experiences of self‐image and embodiment. Aim: The aim of this paper is to compare the evolution of health risk behaviours between undergraduate nursing and social work students. Background: Nursing includes the promotion of health and the shaping of healthy behaviours. An important determinant for providing lifestyle advice is the lifestyle of nurses themselves. Design Longitudinal comparative study. Measurements We compared lifestyle risk behaviours (binge drinking, cannabis/hashish/marijuana use, smoking, oral hygiene/toothbrushing, breakfast/fruit/vegetable consumption, physical activity and screen time/sedentary behaviours) using a self‐administered standardized questionnaire in nursing (n = 121) and social work (n = 140) students at the beginning (2012) and the end of their studies (2015). Adjusted multivariable logistic/Poisson regression models were performed. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the departments in most risk factors in both assessments. However, in relation to their first year, both nursing and social work students displayed higher relative risk of engaging in more behavioural risk factors at the end of their studies (in delivery/junk food consumption, sunburns, hashish/marijuana use and multiple sexual partners). Social work students displayed better behaviours in physical activity and breakfast intake. Conclusion: Nursing students share the patterns of their nonnursing peers in behavioural risk factors compromising their future health and health‐promoting role. Aim: The aim of this project was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of a comprehensive cognitive training intervention to build self‐efficacy for implementation of cognitive strategies in people with diabetes. Background: People with diabetes are at greater risk than the general population for developing cognitive dysfunction. Some attention has been paid to the effect of cognitive impairments on diabetes self‐management, but even when cognitive problems have been identified, few interventions have been tailored for those with diabetes. Methods: The intervention combines in‐person classes and home‐based online computer training. Development, in 2017, included (a) adaptation of prior established, tested interventions; (b) interviews with stakeholders; and (c) integration of course content. Results: Information provided by the stakeholders was used to modify an existing intervention to meet the needs of people with diabetes so that feasibility testing could occur. Despite initial difficulty with recruitment, the intervention was found to be feasible, and nineteen participants found it to be acceptable. Conclusion: This comprehensive cognitive training intervention targeting type 2 diabetes and cognitive dysfunction demonstrates that existing interventions can be adapted for use with people with diabetes. Aims: Our study examined factors influencing the development of healthcare‐associated infections in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary hospital in southern Spain. Background: Healthcare‐associated infections are a frequent adverse event, significantly lengthening patient stays in the ICU. Nursing practice is a key factor in the infection control process. Design A retrospective longitudinal study with two observation periods (admission and discharge) was performed in an ICU of a tertiary hospital. Methods: We analysed patient records for those admitted to this unit coded as CIE 800‐959.9 from 2012 to 2016. Using binomial logistic regression analysis, we analysed factors associated with healthcare‐associated infections. Results: We analysed 375 records (men: 78.1%; average age: 46.63 years). Of these, 9.2% patients acquired a healthcare‐associated infection during their stay. Nursing practice‐related factors significantly associated with the development of infection were the number of days connected to mechanical ventilation and the number of days in the ICU. Conclusion: Healthcare‐associated infections in patients with severe trauma admitted to the ICU are mainly associated with the management of invasive techniques. A multidisciplinary approach should focus on the review of action and care plans. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Aims: The aim of this study was to explore the impact of the pandemic on the emotional and mental well‐being of family carers, care home staff and residents, in light of changing restrictions, increased testing and vaccination rollout in the UK. Design Longitudinal, qualitative semi‐structured interview study. Methods: Remote semi‐structured interviews were conducted with family carers of care home residents with dementia and care home staff from different care homes across the UK. Baseline and follow‐up interviews were conducted in October/November 2020 and March 2021, respectively. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis involving members of the public with caring experiences. Results: In all, 42 family carers and care home staff participated at baseline, with 20 family carers and staff followed up. We identified four themes: (1) Developing anger and frustration; (2) Impact on relationships; (3) Stress and burnout; and (4) Behavioural changes, and perceived impact on residents. The mental health of everyone involved, including family carers, care home staff and residents, has been negatively affected, and relationships between family carers and staff have been severely strained. There was a general lack of adequate mental health support, with little relief. Conclusions: The pandemic has had a detrimental impact on the lives of those surrounding care homes—from residents and staff to family carers. Consideration should be given on how to best support the mental health needs of all three groups, by providing adequate easily accessible mental health care for all. This should also focus on rebuilding the relationships between family carers and care home staff. Impact This is the first paper to highlight the effects of the long‐lasting and miscommunicated restrictions on residents, carers and care home staff, and highlight the urgent need for continued mental health support. Background: Neurosurgical intensive care unit patients are at high risk for delirium. A risk prediction model could help the staff screen for patients at high risk for delirium. On the basis of this risk, preventive measures could be taken to reduce the undesired effects of delirium. Objectives: To establish a delirium prediction model for neurosurgical intensive care unit patients and to verify the sensitivity and specificity of this model. Design A prospective, observational, single‐centre study. Methods: Data were collected from a total of 310 patients admitted to the neurosurgery intensive care unit between January 2017 and February 2018. A risk factor prediction model was then created using multivariate logistic regression. Further data were collected from another 60 patients between March 2018 and June 2018 to validate the model. Results: The model consisted of six predictors, namely, cognitive dysfunction on admission, fever, hypoalbuminaemia, abnormal liver function, sedative use four or more times, and physical restraint. The area under the curve of the model was 0.80, with sensitivity and specificity of 0.68 and 0.83, respectively. Conclusions: This study established a delirium prediction model for neurosurgical intensive care unit patients, which we believe would help focused prevention of delirium in intensive care unit patients. Aim: To identify the prevalence of pressure injury in patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and analyse the risk factors involved during hospitalization. Methods: This was a prospective study evaluating patients who were diagnosed with traumatic brain injury between November 2013 and September 2014. Patient characteristics, clinical and metabolic factors and therapeutic interventions, were evaluated within 30 days of hospital admission. Results: Most of the 240 patients included in the study were male, young, and non‐Caucasian. The incidence of pressure injury was 18.8%. In terms of severity classification, the incidence of pressure injury was 2.7%, 23.2%, and 42.6% in mild, moderate, and severe traumatic brain injury, respectively. Pressure injury development was more likely in the first 10 days of hospitalization. A moderate or severe traumatic brain injury classification, the use of noradrenaline, and older age were pressure injury risk factors. The presence of pressure injury was associated with mortality within 30 days of hospitalization (P <.001). Conclusion: The incidence of pressure injury was high in patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, especially in those whose injury was classified as severe. Older age, noradrenaline use, and a classification of moderate or severe traumatic brain injury were identified as pressure injury risk factors. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate incidences of inappropriate initial urinary catheter placements within an older inpatient cohort. Methods: A total of 200 inpatients that received urinary catheterizations within 24 hours of admission were recruited for this observational study. The key demographic and clinical factors were recorded. Adverse outcomes were assessed by examining incidences of catheter‐associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) during hospitalization, after transfer to skilled nursing facilities, second, duration of hospital stay and by scoring changes on the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living. Correlative relationships between demographic data and clinical factors with adverse outcomes were analyzed. Results: Inappropriate initial urinary catheterization in our cohort was approximately 39%. This was associated with elevated Charlson comorbidity index scores and increased dependency, with correlations to medical diagnosis. We also observed that the primary rationale for the procedure (inappropriate catheterization) was for neurogenic bladder (where intermittent catheterization was indicated) and in 'convenience‐of‐care' catheterizations. Inappropriate catheter placement was ultimately associated with an elevated CAUTI at point of discharge, with transfers to skilled nursing facilities and also with an increased duration of hospital stay. Conclusions: Inappropriate catheter placement was prevalence in southwestern China and associated with adverse outcomes. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Aim/question: Drawing on self‐determination theory, we explored the mediating role of psychological need satisfaction (autonomy, competence and relatedness) in the relationships between nurses' perceptions of supervisors' autonomy‐supportive managerial style and their workplace well‐being, using a prospective design. Method: A prospective questionnaire was given to nurses in eight French psychiatric units. Data were collected from a sample of 294 French nurses who completed measures of perceived supervisors' autonomy‐supportive behaviours at Time 1 and of psychological need satisfaction, work engagement and job satisfaction at Time 2 one year later. Results: Results revealed that nurses' perceptions of supervisors' autonomy‐supportive managerial style were indirectly and positively related to their vigour, dedication, absorption and job satisfaction one year later through their positive effects on psychological need satisfaction. Discussion/implications for practice: Overall, this paper sheds light on the indirect effect of nurses' perceptions of supervisors' autonomy‐supportive behaviours on their workplace well‐being. Aims and objectives To present a systematic review of papers published on the relationship between violence against women and cervical cancer screening. Background Violence against women is a serious public health problem. This phenomenon can have negative effects on victims' health and affect the frequency at which they receive cervical cancer screening. Design A systematic literature review. Methods This study was carried out in October 2015 with searches of the Lilacs, PubMed and Web of Science databases using the following keywords: violence, domestic violence, battered women, spouse abuse, Papanicolaou test, vaginal smears, early detection of cancer and cervix uteri. Results Eight papers published between 2002-2013 were included in this review, most of which were cross-sectional studies. Three studies found no association between victimisation and receiving Pap testing, and five studies reported an association. These contradictory results were due to higher or lower examination frequencies among the women who had experienced violence. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that the association between violence against women and cervical cancer screening remains inconclusive, and they demonstrate the need for more detailed studies to help clarify this relationship. Relevance to clinical practice Professionals who aid women should be knowledgeable regarding the perception and detection of violence so that they can interrupt the cycle of aggression, which has harmful impacts on victims' health.
