Background: A skin tear is a traumatic wound that occurs in up to one in five hospitalized patients. Nursing care includes application of a dressing to create a moist wound healing environment. Aim: To compare the effectiveness of two standard dressings (adhesive silicone foam vs. meshed silicone interface) to heal hospital‐acquired skin tear. Methods: An intention‐to‐treat pilot study was designed using a randomized, non‐inferiority trial in an Australian tertiary hospital setting. Consenting participants (n = 52) had acquired a skin tear within the previous 24 h and had agreed to a 3‐week follow‐up. Data were collected between 2014 and 2020. The primary outcome measure was wound healing at 21 days. Results: Baseline characteristics were similar in both arms. Per protocol, 86% of skin tears were fully healed at 3 weeks in the adhesive silicone foam group, compared to 59% in the meshed silicone interface group. Greater healing was observed across all skin tear categories in the adhesive silicone foam dressing group. In the intention‐to‐treat sample, healing was 69% and 42%, respectively. Conclusions: Results suggest the adhesive silicone foam dressing may be superior, as it produced clinically significant healing of skin tears at 3 weeks compared to the meshed silicone interface dressing. Accounting for potential loss to follow‐up, a sample of at least 103 participants per arm would be required to power a definitive study. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Background: The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remains high worldwide in today's society, especially among young people. Youth education on STDs could help to reduce the prevalence of the condition in society and prevent new cases. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of peer‐based short‐form educational videos on youths' knowledge of STDs. Methods: This quasi‐experimental study was conducted in Turkey. The sample consisted of 121 students divided into experimental and control groups. Pre‐ and post‐test control group quasi‐experimental research design was employed in this study during the spring semester of the academic year 2021–2022. Peer‐based short‐form educational videos created by nursing students were used as an intervention. The survey form and Sexually Transmitted Disease Knowledge Questionnaire were used to collect data. Results: Participants with parental responsibilities and had previous STD experience had higher knowledge score than the other subgroups. There was a significant main effect of peer‐based short‐form educational video on participants overall knowledge score of STDs. Additionally, the effect of intervention continued at 12‐week follow‐up measurement. Conclusion: Peer‐based short‐form educational videos increase young people's knowledge of STD, and the impact of the intervention continued at 12‐week follow up. Aims: The aims of this study are to assess the acceptability and feasibility of a multicomponent intervention to support breastfeeding women and their families and explore its effectiveness. Methods: A pilot study with control and intervention groups was conducted using the complex intervention framework in two primary healthcare centres. Overall, 44 childbearing women, their partners/relatives and 20 healthcare professionals participated in the study. The intervention's feasibility and acceptability were measured. The percentage of exclusive breastfeeding rates and women's self‐efficacy were measured at pre‐intervention, at 10 days postpartum, and again at 2, 4 and 6 months postpartum. Postpartum depression risk was measured at 2 and 6 months postpartum. Professional self‐efficacy was measured at pre‐intervention and 3 months later. Results: The intervention was feasible and acceptable. No difference in self‐efficacy existed between the intervention and control groups. Preliminary effects of the intervention were found in exclusive breastfeeding percentage and postpartum depression risk in the intervention group. Conclusion: The intervention is feasible and acceptable. The results are promising not only for breastfeeding maintenance but also for preventing postpartum depression and recovering exclusive breastfeeding during pandemics. Aim: This quasi‐experimental study aimed to explore effects of walking exercise on disease activity, sleep quality, and quality of life among individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus. Methods: After recruiting people with systemic lupus erythematosus from a hospital in Taiwan between October 2020 and June 2021, participants were free to opt to receive one walking exercise programme plus standard care for 3 months or to membership of a control group receiving routine care. Primary outcomes included Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Score, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale, and a quality‐of‐life scale for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, namely, LupusQoL. These scales were administered first, at baseline and later, within 1 week following completion of the intervention. Between‐group effects were compared using generalized estimating equations with adjustment for baseline variables. Results: The experimental and control groups each included 40 participants. Multivariate analysis indicated that adding the walking exercise programme into routine care elevated sleep quality and LupusQoL (the latter in the subscales of physical health, planning, and intimate relationships), except for disease activity. Conclusion: Findings of this study supported the addition of walking exercise as part of routine care for people with systemic lupus erythematosus and may be a reference in the provision of adequate care for these patients. Aim: This study investigated the effectiveness of an instant message‐based lifestyle and stress management intervention delivered by nurses on cardiovascular disease risk reduction. Methods: In this nonrandomized concurrent controlled trial conducted from March 2013 to September 2013, 164 eligible employees in two companies were assigned to the intervention (n = 83) and control (n = 81) groups based on their worksites. Only participants were blinded to group assignment. All participants received two education sessions during 1 month, and the intervention group also received an instant message‐based lifestyle and stress management intervention for 5 months. The primary outcome was the Framingham Risk Score, and the data were collected at the first month and the sixth month. Results: The final analysis included 80 participants in the intervention group and 76 in the control group. After the intervention, significant intervention effects were found for the mean value and the changes of the Framingham Risk Score and the proportion of participants who improved their diet and exercise (P < 0.05). There were trends for improvement in the proportion of smoking and levels of stress, but statistically significant levels (P > 0.05) were not met. Conclusion: An instant message‐based lifestyle and stress management intervention can reduce cardiovascular disease risk in high‐risk individuals. Aims: The aims of this study were to evaluate the safety, feasibility and outcomes of ambulation within 2 h after thoracoscopic surgery in patients with lung cancer. Background: There are no consensus guidelines on the ideal time for early ambulation following thoracic surgery, although enhanced recovery programmes have been proposed since years. Methods: This non‐randomized, concurrent‐control study was conducted on patients who underwent thoracoscopic surgery between October 2020 and February 2021. Participants were assigned to either the observation group (ambulation within 2 h of extubation) or the control group (ambulation on the first postoperative day). Results: Of the 325 patients who were eligible, 227 were included in the study. Eighty‐three per cent of patients were able to walk any distance within 2 h of extubation, and no adverse events occurred in patients. The length of hospital stay and time to first postoperative flatus were significantly shorter in the observation group than in the control group. There were no differences in the occurrence of postoperative complications and orthostatic hypotension, readmission rate and 6‐min walk distance at discharge. Conclusion: Ambulation within 2 h of extubation was safe and feasible and could lead to better recovery in patients with lung cancer undergoing thoracoscopic surgery. Aim: To investigate whether a novel decision support tool would effectively minimize physical restraint use in critically ill adult patients. Design A nonequivalent quasi‐experimental design combined with a descriptive qualitative approach was used. Methods: A Restraint Decision Tree was developed based on a qualitative study that explored the barriers to employ the Restraint Decision Wheel. During the quasi‐experimental study, patients admitted to the unit between October 2017 and March 2018 were enrolled as the control group receiving the Restraint Decision Wheel (n = 528), whereas patients between April 2018 and September 2018 were enrolled as the intervention group receiving the Restraint Decision Tree (n = 564). The physical restraint rate, accidental catheter removal rate and nurses' satisfaction were compared. Results: The Restraint Decision Tree significantly decreased physical restraint use. No significant difference in the rate of accidental catheter removal was found. Nurses reported increased satisfaction with the restraint decision‐making. Conclusions: The Restraint Decision Tree could minimize physical restraint use. Physicians' involvement in the restraint decision‐making and nurses' competence in delirium assessment may be essential for successful implementation of the Restraint Decision Tree. Physical restraint is a common practice in the intensive care unit.Minimizing physical restraint use does not increase the risk of catheter self‐removal.Nurses equipped with clinical decision‐making skills could promote the appropriateness of restraint application. Aim: If not conducted correctly, nursing handover can threaten patient safety, and so nursing students require good handover education. This study evaluated a handover education programme based on situated learning theory in a clinical practicum. Methods: A quasi‐experimental design and convenience sampling technique were used. The participants (fourth‐grade nursing students recruited from a college in the C province of South Korea) were assigned to an intervention group (n = 38) or a control group (n = 39). A handover education programme that included lectures, expert observations, role playing, peer learning and reflection was received by the intervention group. The control group attended lectures and observed handovers. The handover skills of all participants were tested 2 weeks before and on the last day of the clinical practicum. Handover performance ability, handover clinical judgement ability and handover self‐efficacy were outcome variables. Results: Significant improvements in handover performance ability, handover clinical judgement ability and handover self‐efficacy were observed in the intervention group compared with the control group. Conclusion: The significance of this study lies in the development and application of a programme based on situated learning theory for handover education. Application of theory‐based handover education in clinical practicums is recommended to improve the handover capabilities of nursing students. Aim: The study purpose was to investigate effects of a cognitive rehabilitation programme on cognitive function, self‐management and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Background: Cognitive impairment is frequently observed in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, and it interferes with many aspects of self‐management, which is fundamental to disease management and quality of life. Design The design is quasi‐experimental. Methods: Data collection was performed between June 2018 and March 2019. Study participants were 60 in‐ or out‐patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The cognitive rehabilitation programme involved six 30‐min sessions administered over a period of 2 weeks and consisted of six areas: attention, memory, language, visuospatial perception, executive function and problem solving. Cognitive function, self‐management and quality of life were measured at three times (preintervention and immediately and 4 weeks after intervention). Results: Cognitive function, self‐management and quality of life were found to be significantly improved over time after administration of the cognitive rehabilitation programme. However, no significant improvement was observed in the control group. Conclusions: Our findings support the potential usefulness of cognitive intervention to promote cognitive function, self‐management ability and quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Background: The DigniCap System is an effective scalp cooling device for the prevention of chemotherapy‐induced alopecia in early breast cancer patients. Aim: This prospective study was designed to confirm the efficacy and tolerability of the device, to explore potential factors associated with its efficacy and to collect data on patient perceptions and satisfaction. Methods: Between January 2016 and June 2018, 163 early breast cancer patients eligible for adjuvant chemotherapy were enrolled. Hair loss was assessed using the Dean scale, where a score of 0–2 (hair loss ≤50%) was defined as successful. Results: Hair preservation was successful in 57% of patients in the overall series. The proportion was even higher (81%) in the patient subgroup treated with a paclitaxel and trastuzumab regimen. Side effects (feeling cold, headache, head heaviness, scalp and cervical pain) were mild to moderate and did not correlate with the rate of hair loss. Lifestyle, anthropometric factors and hair characteristics failed to be associated with device efficacy. Conclusions: The DigniCap System was well tolerated and found to be effective in preventing alopecia in early breast cancer patients. Our study failed to identify factors other than type of chemotherapy regimen associated with hair preservation. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? While the DigniCap System is known to be effective in preventing chemotherapy‐induced alopecia, nearly 50% of patients do not benefit from its use, and its side effects can be relevant.Identifying factors associated with the efficacy of scalp hypothermia is particularly important to avert the side effects of scalp cooling in patients unlikely to gain any advantage and to avoid unnecessarily prolonging chemotherapy chair occupation in patients at high risk of hair loss. This single‐centre prospective study involving a relatively large series of breast cancer patients confirmed the efficacy and tolerability of the DigniCap.Our study failed to identify factors other than type of chemotherapy regimen significantly associated with hair preservation. Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of individualized exercise counselling in changing exercise behaviour and relieving pregnancy‐related distress symptoms in pregnant women. Methods: A quasi‐experimental design and convenience sampling technique were used. Participants were recruited from the prenatal outpatient departments of medical centre hospitals in Taipei, Taiwan. The experimental group (n = 52) received face‐to‐face exercise counselling followed by 8 weeks of exercise sessions in their homes. The control group (n = 49) received no exercise counselling. Pregnancy‐related distress symptoms were assessed before and after 8 weeks in both groups. Results: The after‐counselling scores of total (t = 2.46, P < 0.05) and physical (t = 3.18, P < 0.01) distress symptoms were significantly lower than the before‐counselling scores in the experimental group. The total, physical and psychological distress scores significantly differed between groups and before and after counselling. The adjusted R2 values for total, physical and psychological distress symptoms ranged from 0.59 to 0.70. Participants' exercise habits increased from prepregnancy (19.2%) to after counselling (71.2%). Conclusion: Exercise counselling may effectively increase exercise habits and reduce pregnancy‐related distress symptoms among pregnant women. Women with higher pretest symptom distress scores also had higher posttest symptom distress scores. Based on our outcomes, health care providers should routinely provide exercise counselling to pregnant women. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? It mentions that AllTrials initiative (alltrials.net) calls for the prospective registration of all clinical trials on a trials registry and for full reporting of the methods and findings of trials. It also mentions that the initiative has provided a catalyst for on-going review and re-examination of how trials are assessed for publication.

Aims: This study aimed to explore the role of clinical research coordinators (CRCs) and identify the importance and performance of the role as well as the factors that affect the professional recognition of their role. Methods: A total of 102 CRCs from 10 hospitals were recruited for a survey. The Clinical Trial Nursing Questionnaire scale developed by Ehrenberger and Lillington was used to collect data for the importance–performance analysis. The importance and performance data were plotted on a two‐dimensional grid, and multiple stepwise linear regression analysis was used to determine the influencing factors on the CRC role. Results: The influencing factors on the importance of the CRC role were frequency of protocol assessment, implementation and evaluation and professional nursing role performance. The influencing factors on performance were formal education and training in clinical research, institutional career ladder system for professional development and identification as a principal investigator in research studies. The influencing factor on the professional nursing role perception was the lower component of the 'performance of professional nursing role'. Conclusion: Formal educational preparation, identification as a principal investigator in research studies and clear career progression are supportive factors to the professional recognition of CRC as a specialized nursing role. Aims: To explore the effectiveness of continuous home wound care on patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Design: A non‐randomized parallel controlled non‐inferiority trial. Methods: Patients with Wagner grade I–III DFUs hospitalized in two distant campuses of the same hospital were included. All patients received infection treatment and wound bed preparation during hospitalization; after discharge, patients in one of the campuses received routine outpatient wound care, and those treated in the other received continuous home wound care. The per‐protocol analysis was performed to compare ulcer healing indicators, knowledge, health belief, self‐management behaviour and medical expenses of the two groups. Results: Between October 2021 and December 2022, 116 patients were enrolled in the study; 107 completed. The home care was not inferior in terms of ulcer healing rate and demonstrated significant enhancements in the understanding of warning signs, health belief and self‐management behaviour. Additionally, the home care saved 220.38 yuan (24.32 UK pounds) in direct medical expenses for each additional one square centimetre of ulcer healing. Conclusion: The continuous home wound care enhanced self‐management behaviour of the patients and saved their medical expenses while not compromising ulcer healing. Impact: This is to date the first study to conduct continuous home wound care practice for patients with DFUs and confirmed its safety and non‐inferiority in ulcer healing, and supported its superiority in improving self‐management behaviour and saving medical expenses. Aim: To improve the effectiveness of nursing clinical handover through a qualitative, tailored communication intervention. Design: A multisite before and after intervention using qualitative ethnography combined with discourse analysis of nursing handover interactions. Methods: We implemented a tailored ward‐based intervention to redesign nursing handover practice with co‐constructed recommendations for organisational and cultural change on seven wards across three affiliated metropolitan hospitals between February 2020 and November 2022. The intervention was informed by pre‐implementation interviews and focus groups with nursing, medical and allied health staff and patients (n = 151) and observed and/or audio‐recorded handover events (n = 233). Post‐intervention we conducted interviews and focus groups (n = 79) and observed and/or audio‐recorded handover events (n = 129) to qualitatively evaluate impact. Results: Our translational approach resulted in substantial changes post‐intervention. Nurses conducted more shift‐to‐shift handovers at the bedside, with greater patient interaction and better structured and more comprehensive information transfer, supported by revised handover documentation. Redesigned group handovers were focused and efficient, communicating critical patient information. Conclusion: Contextualised training combined with changes to ward‐level systemic factors impeding communication results in improved nursing handovers. Practice change requires strong executive leadership and project governance, combined with effective ward‐level leadership, collaboration and mentoring. The speed and degree of change post‐intervention demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary collaborative research between hospital executive, ward leadership and communication specialists. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Nurses are more likely to conduct efficient group handovers and informative, patient‐centred bedside handovers in line with policy when they understand the value of handover and have practical strategies to support communication. Communication training should be combined with broader ward‐level changes to handover practice tailored to the ward context. A multilevel approach results in more effective practice change. Background: Authentic leadership and empowered nurses are necessary if a healthy work environment is to be created and patient safety maintained; however, few studies have examined the impact of authentic leadership, on nurse empowerment and the patient safety climate. Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of an educational intervention delivered through a multi-faceted training programme on nurses' perceptions of authentic leadership, nurse empowerment (both structural and psychological) and the patient safety climate. Design: A quasi-experimental study using a one-group pretest–posttest design consistent with TREND guidelines. Methods: The study was conducted in a university hospital between December 2018 and January 2020. Participants were followed for 6 months. The programme involved 36 head nurses (leaders) and 153 nurses (followers). The effectiveness of the programme was evaluated using repeated measures of analysis of variance, dependent sample t-tests and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Following the intervention, safety climate and authentic leadership scores increased among both leaders and followers. Structural and psychological empowerment scores also increased among followers. We found that authentic leadership and structural empowerment were predictors of safety climate. Conclusion: The implementation of the education programme resulted in positive changes in participants' perceptions of authentic leadership and empowerment, which can enhance patient safety. Implications: Healthcare organizations can implement similar multi-faceted training programmes focused on authentic leadership, and nurse empowerment to increase patient safety. Achieving effective results in such programmes can be facilitated by motivating participants with the support of the top management. Aim This protocol paper describes a study that aims to determine if protected mealtimes implementation closes the energy deficit of 1900 kJ between estimated requirements and actual energy intake of hospitalized adults in the subacute setting. Background Protected mealtimes, a strategy developed to address the prevalence of malnourished hospitalized adults, aims to minimize unavoidable and unnecessary interruptions at mealtimes. It has been implemented widely with limited high-quality studies as to its effect. Design A pragmatic stepped wedge cluster trial. Primary outcomes are daily energy and protein intake. Methods Funding was awarded in October 2014. In this study, protected mealtimes implementation will occur across each cluster (ward) chosen at random. A waiver of consent has been endorsed, enabling all patients to receive the intervention. Patients excluded from outcome evaluation will be those receiving end of life care and patients who are nil by mouth. The selection of patients for outcome evaluation will also occur randomly. Sample size, randomization, statistical analysis and contamination issues consider the reporting guidelines of the CONSORT statement: extension to cluster randomized trials. Conclusions The methods selected will ensure that the research is of high quality with conclusions useful and relevant for translation into practice settings. The study does not aim to assess whether the intervention is sustainable beyond the study period, rather it will establish whether the removal of known barriers to intervention uptake enables high fidelity with the intervention. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effects of an early mobilization protocol performed in patients who underwent cardiac surgery on post‐operative outcomes. Background: Post‐operative complications are common in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Early mobilization is recommended for patients who undergo cardiac surgery to prevent complications and achieve successful outcomes in post‐operative care. Design The study design was quasi‐experimental with a control group. Methods: Participants were patients who underwent cardiac surgery between January and October 2015. The study included 102 patients (51 patients each in the experimental and control groups). The introductory characteristics form, the Richards‐Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ), duration of hospital stay (post‐operatively), and development of a post‐operative late complications form were used to collect data. Results: The study results revealed that patients in the experimental group had better improvement in RCSQ scores, shorter duration of hospitalization, and fewer late complications after surgery than patients in the control group. Conclusion: Early mobilization is feasible in adult cardiac surgery patients and has significant benefits. More research is recommended into the effectiveness of early mobilization in different patient groups. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Background: As frontline healthcare workers, there is a growing expectation that nurses should be able to respond to disclosures of family violence. However, the profession and hospital systems have been slow to respond with clear skills, knowledge and confidence deficits identified in existing research. There is limited research which has robustly evaluated the effectiveness of in‐depth, multifaceted training on readiness to respond among nurses. Aim: To longitudinally evaluate the effectiveness of an in‐depth family violence training intervention on confidence, knowledge and clinical skills of nurses working in a large tertiary adult hospital. Design: Single‐centre, longitudinal intervention study. Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) cross‐sectional guidelines were used. Methods: One hundred and ten nursing clinicians participated in this study to complete a comprehensive evidence‐based model of healthcare workers response for assisting patients experiencing family violence. A mixed methods survey was used to assess change in knowledge, confidence and clinical skills among participants. Outcome assessment was electronically undertaken at baseline, 6–9 months and 12–15 months following intervention. Results: Statistically significant improvement was seen in self‐reported knowledge, confidence and frequency of screening for family violence. Relative to baseline estimates, these improvements were identified 6–9 months and 12–15 months following intervention; albeit with consideration to the visually observed trend of skill reversion at follow‐up. Quantitative findings were paralleled by qualitatively identified improvements in the recognition of the intersectional nature of violence, need for patient collaboration in screening and depth in considerations around how family violence is screened for. Conclusions: Findings provide tentative support for the utility of a multidimensional training approach to improving nurses' readiness to respond to disclosures of family violence. Relevance to clinical practice: This study provides preliminary support for multidimensional, evidence‐based training to effectively improve nurses' confidence, knowledge and clinical skills required for responding to family violence. Aim This paper describes the design and rationale of a controlled trial that aims to determine the effectiveness of an intervention programme in which the internet is used. Background Adolescent obesity is a major health problem, there being urgency to find effective interventions that induce behavioural change. The inclusion of the internet in the intervention may improve adolescents' adherence to the weight management programme and lead to adoption of healthier lifestyles. Design A clinical trial with a control group (non-randomized). Methods Participants are adolescents with appointments at a paediatric obesity clinic (Portugal). Sample size was calculated according to the power analysis. The experimental group will follow the standard treatment protocol and receive free access to the e-therapeutic platform. The control group will follow the standard treatment protocol and join a waiting list. Intervention length will be 36 weeks (24 weeks of direct intervention with a follow-up for 12 weeks). This study was approved by the Ethical Committee for Health (Lisbon, Portugal) in January 2012 and funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal) in December 2012. Discussion The results of this research will promote reflection on new approaches directed to treat adolescent obesity and on the promotion of healthy behaviours. We expect to gather empirical evidence of the intervention programme effectiveness. Aim: Nurses play an essential role in improving health‐related knowledge and self‐efficacy of patients through health education. This study aimed to investigate the effects of message‐framed informational videos on diabetes management knowledge and self‐efficacy in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A quasi‐experimental pretest and posttest design with two experimental and one standard care comparison groups was carried out to examine the effects of the message‐framed videos. The two message‐framed informational videos were developed to provide health teachings about diabetes self‐care. The knowledge and self‐efficacy of the two video groups and lecture comparison group were measured before and after the intervention using valid and reliable instruments established by the authors. Results: After the intervention, the knowledge and self‐efficacy of the two experimental groups were significantly higher than the comparison group. No significant difference was found in the knowledge scores between the two experimental groups, but a significant difference was noted in the average increase in their self‐efficacy. Conclusion: Message‐framed informational videos can be effective in increasing the diabetes management knowledge and self‐efficacy, and a gain‐framed rather than loss‐framed approach can be superior in increasing self‐efficacy. The use of an informational video in providing health education to patients improves retention of information.Message framing may be used to provide health‐related information effectively regarding gains and losses of behavioural changes among patients. Psychosocial intervention (PSI) training results in enhanced knowledge, more positive attitudes, increased confidence and lower levels of clinical burnout for qualified mental health professionals and better outcomes for service users who they work with. This paper describes an evaluation of a PSI training course for qualified and unqualified nurses working in a low-secure unit. Forty-two staff (21 qualified) were randomly allocated to an experimental training group or a waiting list control group. Knowledge, attitudes and burnout were assessed before and after the training. In addition, a random sample of 44 care plans written by the qualified nurses were audited before and after to examine evidence of implementation of PSI in practice. Qualified and unqualified nurses in the experimental group showed significant improvements in knowledge and attitudes compared with the control group. Care plans showed a significant increase in the implementation of PSI. The only significant change in burnout was a reduction in depersonalization for qualified nurses in the experimental group. The PSI training may result in improvements in knowledge, attitude and practice in qualified and unqualified nurses working with severely mentally ill patients in low-secure settings, but in this study the training did not incur protection against burnout. This paper is a report of the efficacy of a parental educational intervention on children's pain intensity and experience of pain-related unpleasantness at 24 hours post-discharge from the emergency department, and on parents' beliefs about pain. Background. Parents' misbeliefs about pain management may inhibit them from managing their child's pain appropriately. Educating parents about pain management may increase their knowledge, dispel myths and help decrease children's pain intensity and unpleasantness related to pain following a visit to an emergency department. Method. A randomized design was adopted with samples of parent/child dyads. The experimental group received a bookmark, booklet on pain management and pain scale. The control group only received a pain scale. Pain intensity and unpleasantness were measured at triage and 24 hours after discharge from the emergency department. Parents' beliefs were measured with the Pain Belief Questionnaire. Data were collected from November 2005 to May 2006. Results. Samples of 98 (experimental) and 97 (control) children/parents were recruited. No statistically significant differences were found between both groups regarding pain intensity and unpleasantness, at triage and 24 hours post-discharge. Results for the Pain Belief Questionnaire were similar between the groups ( t = 1·751, P = 0·082). Conclusion. The interventions were not effective to reduce pain and unpleasantness related to pain, as well as to improve pain beliefs of parents. This paper is a report of a study conducted to determine the effectiveness of a community case management collaborative education intervention in terms of satisfaction, learning and performance among public health nurses. Background. Previous evaluation studies of case management continuing professional education often failed to demonstrate effectiveness across a range of outcomes and had methodological weaknesses such as small convenience samples and lack of control groups. Method. A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted between September 2005 and February 2006. Ten health centre clusters (five control, five intervention) recruited 163 public health nurses in Taiwan to the trial. After pre-tests for baseline measurements, public health nurses in intervention centres received an educational intervention of four half-day workshops. Post-tests for both groups were conducted after the intervention. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to evaluate the effect of the intervention on target outcomes. Results. A total of 161 participants completed the pre- and post-intervention measurements. This was almost a 99% response rate. Results revealed that 97% of those in the experimental group were satisfied with the programme. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in knowledge ( P = 0·001), confidence in case management skills ( P = 0·001), preparedness for case manager role activities ( P = 0·001), self-reported frequency in using skills ( P = 0·001) and role activities ( P = 0·004). Aims and objectives. This article, based on the available literature, attempts to discuss the importance of recruitment and retention of research participants, the associated barriers and challenges, and various strategies to overcome these barriers. Background. The inability to recruit and retain the required participants in a research project poses serious threats to both the internal and the external validity of a research study. Despite serious implications, the issues of recruitment and retention do not receive due attention in research and publications. Literature suggests a lack of coordinated efforts to collect information on the outcomes of recruitment experiences in clinical trials and population studies. Studies often mention the number of participants who refuse to participate; however, the majority of the studies often fail to mention the specific reasons insufficient recruitment or retention of the participants. Design. A methodological paper. Method. Various participant-, context-, environment- and research-related factors are examined that affect the phenomenon of recruitment and retention of the participants in a study. Results. Delayed or inefficient recruitment also has financial and ethical implications. Although there are many pieces of information scattered throughout academic journals on recruitment and retention of participants in research, few authors have dealt with the issue holistically. It is imperative for researchers to understand the importance of recruitment and retention of research participants, the associated barriers and challenges, and various strategies to overcome these barriers. Conclusion. Appropriate recording and reporting of the problems faced while recruiting and retaining the participants in research studies can help not only in understating the challenge, but will also help in devising the strategies to overcome this problem. This article was an attempt to synthesise and review the available literature on recruitment and retention issues, which demand extensive theoretical and conceptual thinking as part of the research design. Aims and objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess the benefits of a caregiver training programme on the cognitive and functional status of older adults, and to compare the effects of this programme according to type of caregiver (professional vs. family caregiver). Background: Due to demographic changes that have resulted in an aging population, the role of caregiver of an older adult has become very important in recent years. Design and Methods: The sample was composed of 160 older adults: (a) 100 received care from caregivers who had taken the three‐month training programme (treatment group), of which 60 were professional caregivers and 40 were family caregivers, and (b) 60 received care from caregivers who had not taken the programme (control group). In order to evaluate programme effects on cognitive and functional status, we used both direct measures answered by the older adults (MMSE, CAPE and EuroQol) and caregiver reports (Barthel and RMPBC). We used a quasi‐experimental, pre‐post design. We followed SQUIRE 2.0 guidelines for reporting. Results: The results showed that older adults who were cared for by caregivers that had participated in the training programme showed gains in quality of life and cognitive ability and maintenance of functional ability. Within the treatment group, although everyone significantly improved their scores, the older adults cared for by family caregivers improved in more of the cognitive sub‐items than did their peers in the professional caregiver group. Conclusions: The data obtained show that a caregiver training programme based on cognitive stimulation produces cognitive, functional and health‐related quality‐of‐life benefits in older adults. Furthermore, the caregivers reported increased satisfaction with their work. Relevance to clinical practice: The improvements obtained in the older adults and in caregivers show the relevance of this type of intervention when working in the clinical field of caregiving. Aim and Objectives: This study explored the effect of transdermal buprenorphine on quality of life and six symptoms in cancer patients with pain. Background: Transdermal opioids offer advantages over traditional routes of administration. The impact of transdermal buprenorphine on quality of life for patients with cancer in Asian populations is unknown. Design: This study employed a single‐arm observational repeated measures design. Cancer patients with pain were evaluated prior to treatment (baseline). Over a 4‐week treatment period, quality of life and symptoms were assessed at 2 and 4 weeks. This study adhered to the recommendations of STROBE guidelines. Methods: This multi‐site study was conducted in six hospitals located across northern, middle and southern Taiwan. Adult cancer patients whose pain was previously stable with opioid analgesics and, based on clinical judgement, were able to convert to transdermal buprenorphine treatment were invited to participate. Quality of life was measured with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (QLQ‐C30). Results: Generalised estimating equations showed participants who completed at least one follow‐up measurement (N = 80) over 4‐weeks had a significant improvement in overall quality of life. Functional status only improved for social functioning. However, symptom severity decreased significantly for nausea/vomiting, pain, insomnia and constipation. Conclusions: The study provides initial evidence supporting transdermal buprenorphine for providing beneficial effects of improving quality of life and reducing severity of symptoms in Asian patients with cancer. Relevance to clinical practice: The findings of this study can inform the clinical practice that the use of transdermal buprenorphine in cancer patients with pain may also reduce the severity of other symptoms and improve overall quality of life. Aims and objectives: To determine whether interventions that use the Specific Thematic Nursing Care Action Modules (STNC‐AM) platform improve patients' psychological health over a two‐month period. Background: Stroke survivors often are left with a disability after a stroke, which can have an impact on their physical and mental health. Therefore, it is necessary for stroke patients to have tailored programmes in the face of post‐stroke mental health concerns and the need for care information. Design: A non‐randomised controlled pilot study was conducted. Methods: Participants included 44 post‐stroke patients at a medical university hospital, between 1 August 2019–28 February 2021, of whom 24 were assigned to the control group and 20 were assigned to the intervention (STNC‐AM). Data were analysed on an intention‐to‐treat basis. We used the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Checklist (case–control studies) for this study. Results: There were no statistical differences between the two groups at baseline. At the end of two months, however, the scores for resilience, depression and positive factors illness representation were statistically different between the two groups (p <.05). The results of the generalised estimating equation model analysis indicated that resilience and anxiety remained more significant in decreasing depression in the intervention group than in the control group. Conclusion: This preliminary trial suggests that, although action modules may be associated with a decrease in depression post‐stroke, part of this effect was likely associated with an increase in resilience and a decrease in anxiety of the patients. Aim: This study was designed to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a nurse‐led communication intervention among surrogates in the intensive care unit (ICU) guided by the COMFORT (Connect; Options; Making meaning; Family caregivers; Openings; Relating; Team) communication model. Background: As frontline communicators, nurses experience communication difficulties with surrogates who face complex informational and emotional barriers when making decisions for critically ill patients in the ICU. However, research on effective nurse communication focusing on both curative and end‐of‐life (EOL) care is lacking in the literature. Design: A single‐centre two‐group pretest‐posttest quasi‐experiment. Method: The total sample included 41 surrogates of adult ventilated patients. Twenty participants were allocated to the intervention group who received a daily 20‐min telephone call with content based on the COMFORT communication model. Twenty‐one participants comprised the control group who received usual care. Participants completed a questionnaire before and after the study measuring satisfaction, anxiety and depression, decisional conflict, and quality of communication. The Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs (TREND) checklist was followed for nonrandomised controlled trials. Result: The intervention was feasible, with 19 of 20 surrogates completing the follow‐up surveys, and 48 telephone conversations completed (48% of the planned phone calls). Surrogates' satisfaction was higher in the intervention group than in the control group after adjusting for the selected covariates (25.43 and 24.15, respectively; p =.512). Preliminary efficacy outcomes favouring the intervention included quality of communication with healthcare providers, but not surrogates' perceived depression/anxiety and decisional conflicts. Conclusion: Implementation of the intervention is feasible, acceptable, and favourable among surrogates to improve quality of communication with healthcare providers in the ICU. Aims: To determine eye screening coverage and adherence to national eye screening recommendations of a nurse‐led retinal image‐based model of diabetes education and eye screening in Indigenous primary care clinics. Design A pre‐post study. Methods: During January 2018–March 2020 Indigenous Australians with diabetes at three regional Australian clinics were offered eye screening by a nurse‐diabetes educator/retinal imager. At the main site the nurse recruited/scheduled participants, and at satellite sites local clinic staff did so. Visual acuity was tested and digital retinal images acquired and graded. Participants were offered rescreening at or before 12‐months based on baseline results. Results: In total 203 adults with diabetes attending Indigenous primary care clinics were screened, with divergent results based on the recruitment methods. At the main clinic 135 of 172 eligible adults (79%) were screened. At the satellite sites, 15 of 85 (18%) and 21 of 77 (27%) diabetes patients were screened. Combined coverage 51%. Conclusion: A credentialed nurse‐educator implemented a model of retinal image‐based diabetes education, measured eye screening coverage and adherence to national eye screening guidelines, met the 'acceptable 75% eye screening coverage' benchmark and improved patient eye screening guideline adherence at the one site where the nurse‐educator had access to patient recruitment and scheduling. Impact This novel nurse‐led primary care iDEES model of retinal image‐based diabetes education can improve the currently low Indigenous diabetes eye screening coverage in Australia. Importantly, the nurse‐managed iDEES model of integrated diabetes care is readily adaptable to other settings and populations where access to and/or uptake of eye care is suboptimal. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of a musical fitness programme (MFP) intervention in improving neuropsychiatric symptoms, depression, upper‐limb muscle strength and cognition of older adults with cognitive impairment in long‐term care (LTC) facilities. Background: Because of population ageing, the number of older adults with cognitive impairment has been increasing. The effectiveness of medications in treating cognitive impairment is limited; therefore, the global trend has been for non‐pharmacological treatments. However, intervention studies of MFPs on older LTC residents with cognitive impairment are scant. Design: This study adopted a quasi‐experimental design in accordance with the Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs (TREND) checklist. In total, 84 older adults with cognitive impairment were recruited from seven LTC facilities. The MFP was implemented from July–November 2019. Methods: The intervention group received the MFP, which was 50 min per session, twice a week for 12 weeks, whereas the comparison group received usual care. Neuropsychiatric inventory nursing home version, the Cornell scale for depression in dementia Chinese version, 30‐s arm curl test and Mini‐Mental State Examination were the outcome measures. Data were analysed using Chi‐square test, t test and repeated measure analysis of variance. Results: After the intervention, the scores of neuropsychiatric inventory and the Cornell depression exhibited significant differences over time between two groups (F = 3.6, p =.029; F = 5.96, p =.003, respectively). Nevertheless, 30‐s arm curl test and Mini‐Mental State Examination demonstrated non‐significant between‐group differences. Conclusion: The MFP can effectively reduce neuropsychiatric symptoms and depression in older adults with cognitive impairment in LTC facilities. To ensure a more robust evidence base, more research is warranted. Relevance to clinical practice: The MFP is a non‐pharmacological treatment that can be implemented to promote psychological well‐being among older adults with cognitive impairment in LTC facilities, and to indirectly reduce nursing staff burden. Aims and objectives: To evaluate the effects of a blended emergent research training programme for clinical nurses on research competence and critical thinking. Background: With the development of the nursing discipline and evidence‐based nursing practice, nursing research competence is increasingly important for clinical nurses. Current nursing research training programmes cannot meet the needs of clinical nurses. Design: A quasi‐experimental study. Methods: A total of 104 clinical nurses from two tertiary hospitals participated in this study. The intervention group received a blended emergent research training programme for clinical nurses, and the control group received no intervention. Nursing research competence and critical thinking were measured at baseline, after the intervention and three months after the intervention. The satisfaction with the training of clinical nurses in the intervention group was also measured after the intervention. Generalised linear mixed models were used to evaluate the effects of the intervention on outcome variables. Qualitative data were analysed by two researchers using the content analysis method. Our reporting complies with the TREND checklist. Results: The blended emergent research training programme for clinical nurses finally showed positive effects on nursing research competence and critical thinking. The effects lasted until three months after the training programme. 'Learner‐centred Training', 'Skilled Trainers', 'Encouraging Training Environment' and 'Positive Outcomes' are the main categories generated from the qualitative data. Conclusion: The blended emergent research training programme for clinical nurses could be used for clinical nurses' research education to improve their nursing research competence and critical thinking. Aim and objective: The aim of the study was to investigate how the sleep improvement interventions developed for the wards were associated with patients' sleep. The objective was to promote patients' sleep. Background: The quality of sleep is vital for patients' health and recovery from illness. However, patients generally sleep poorly during hospitalisation. Sleep‐disturbing factors are connected to the hospital environment, patients' physical illness, emotional state and the activities of the staff. Many sleep‐disturbing factors can be influenced by appropriate nursing interventions. Design: A two‐group intervention study including the development of nursing interventions aimed at supporting patients' sleep. One group received a sleep promotion intervention and the other received standard care. Both groups evaluated their sleep in the morning. Methods: A survey of participants' sleep evaluations was collected with the five‐item Richards‐Campbell Sleep Questionnaire. The data were analysed statistically. The STROBE checklist was used to report the study. Results: From the participants' perspective, sleep was better in the intervention group, even though statistically significantly only among men. The pain intensity correlated with sleep quality. The number of patients in the room or whether participants had had an operation had no effect on their sleep evaluations. Conclusions: Interventions targeted at supporting and promoting the sleep quality of hospital inpatients may be effective. They should be developed in collaboration with patients and nurses. Several nursing interventions can be proposed to promote better sleep among patients; however, more research is needed to confirm the results. Sleep promotion should include both standardised protocols and individualised sleep support. Relevance to clinical practice: Investing in nursing interventions to promote patients' sleep is important. Patients' individual sleep‐related needs should be part of their care plan. Aims and objectives: To compare the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound‐guided fascia iliaca block (FIB) insertion in patients with fractured neck of femur by trained emergency nurses with insertion by doctors. Background: The FIB is an effective and safe form of analgesia for patients with hip fracture presenting to the emergency department (ED). While it has traditionally been inserted by medical doctors, no evidence exists comparing the effectiveness and safety of FIB insertion by nurses compared with doctors. Design: A prospective cohort study. Methods: The study was conducted in an Australian metropolitan ED. Patients admitted to the ED with suspected or confirmed fractured neck of femur had a FIB inserted under ultrasound guidance by either a trained emergency nurse or doctor. A retrospective medical record audit was undertaken of consecutive ED patients presenting between January 2013–December 2017. Reporting of this study followed the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines for cohort studies. Results: Of the 472 patients eligible for a FIB, 322 (68%) had one inserted. A majority were inserted by doctors (n = 207, 64.3%) with 22.4% (n = 72) by nurses and in 13.3% (n = 43) of patients the clinician was not documented. There were no differences between the nurse‐inserted and doctor‐inserted groups for mean pain scores 1 hr post‐FIB insertion; clinically significant reduction (≥30%) in pain score 1 hr post‐FIB insertion; pain score 4 hr post‐FIB insertion; delirium incidence; opioid use post‐FIB insertion; or time to FIB insertion. No adverse events were identified in either group. Conclusion: Insertion of FIBs by trained emergency nurses is as effective and safe as insertion by doctors in patients with fractured neck of femur in the ED. Senior emergency nurses should routinely be inserting FIB as a form of analgesia for patients with hip fracture. Relevance to clinical practice: Our study showed trained emergency nurses can safely and effectively insert fascia iliaca blocks in patients with hip fractures. The study was carried out on 114 primiparous women from February to March 2009. After randomization, women were divided into two groups: 55 receiving STC and 59 receiving conventional counselling. At 1, 3 and 5 months after delivery, a nurse specialist evaluated the EB rates, the influence of mother's educational level and employment status on EB. Breastfeeding rates in STC were higher compared to conventional counselling ( P < 0.01); resuming work was not an EB discouraging variable as 74.5% women in the STC resumed work vs. 54.2% of the conventional counselling. Breastfeeding promotion should start during pregnancy, advising women about benefits for the child in receiving human milk. STC should be used to improve EB in primiparous women. In this method we distract attention of the children with distraction cards/Flippits®. Flippits® consist of various eye-catching pictures and shapes. Then we asked the children questions about the cards during the blood draw procedure that he or she can only answer if he or she examines the cards carefully. This study is a prospective, randomized controlled trial. The sample consisted of 123 children of ages between 6 and 12. We randomly assigned subjects into two groups. Group 1 received no intervention, whereas Group 2 received distraction in the form of looking through distraction cards/Flippits®. Pre-procedural and procedural anxiety was assessed using the anxiety scale from the Children's Anxiety and Pain Scales by parents' and observer's report. Procedural pain was assessed using Faces Pain Scale-Revised by children, parent and observer reports. Results show that pre-procedural anxiety did not differ significantly. However, the experimental group had significantly lower pain levels than the control group during the blood draw procedure. Eighty pregnant women were randomly divided into two groups; study group had a 20 min foot massage daily for 5 days whereas the control group did not receive any intervention beyond standard prenatal care. The research was conducted between March and August 2007 in Manisa Province Health Ministry Central Primary Health Care Clinic 1, in Manisa, Western Turkey. Compared with the control group, women in the experimental group had a significantly smaller lower leg circumference (right and left, ankle, instep and metatarsal-phalanges joint) after 5 days of massage. Aims: To determine the effect of adding structured simulation to a traditional classroom lecture format on students' knowledge acquisition and their evaluation of faculty teaching effectiveness, compared to traditional classroom lectures alone. Background: There is a critical lack of high‐quality clinical placements/experiences in nursing education, particularly in clinical specialty populations, such as paediatrics. Simulation has been shown to help students practice in a safe environment. However, less is known about the outcomes of embedding simulation in didactic class sessions or classroom lectures. Additionally, data on the impact of simulation as a teaching pedagogy on faculty teaching effectiveness is limited. Design: Post‐test, nonequivalent control group quasi‐experimental study. Methods: Students in two prelicensure nursing programs participated in a 10‐week term paediatric nursing course taught by the same faculty member on two different campuses. The students at one campus, designated as the control group (n = 43), received four hours of traditional, lecture‐only, instructions. The group at a second campus, the intervention group (n = 44), received the same lectures with added structured simulations. Students' knowledge acquisition and their evaluation of faculty teaching effectiveness were measured in both groups using the same standardised assessment measures. The CONSORT checklist was followed. Results: Students' knowledge acquisition scores and their evaluation scores of faculty teaching effectiveness were significantly higher in the intervention (simulation) group compared to the control group. A significantly higher number of students in the simulation group scored above the national average Nursing Care of Children score as compared to students in the control group. Conclusions: Integrating simulation with didactic instruction enhanced students' knowledge acquisition and improved their opinion of faculty teaching effectiveness. Relevance to clinical practice: Augmenting lecture with simulation may provide students with learning experiences that they may not have during clinical rotation due to a lack of paediatric clinical placement sites and differences between sites. Aim: To explore the understanding and experiences of research nurses who obtain informed consent from adult patients participating in emergency care research. Design: Qualitative phenomenographic descriptive study. Methods: Ten research nurses from six hospitals in England were recruited. Data were collected using semi‐structured face‐to‐face and telephone interviews between January 2019 and March 2019. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically, informed by phenomenography. COREQ was followed. Results: Three main themes were identified: (a) emergency research is different, (b) protecting the patient, and (c) experience and confidence with recruitment. It was found that obtaining patient consent in emergency care research was challenging and timing of the process was crucial. Nurses with more experience of emergency care were more confident in approaching patients and their families. There was variability in out‐of‐hours recruitment which was a consequence of the range of informed consent processes used and the different levels of engagement of clinical teams. Conclusion: There is a variety of organisational cultures, processes and procedures which affect the way consent is obtained in emergency care research. A team approach was evident in the hospitals where consent rates were high and was more successful than those reliant solely on the presence of a research nurse. Organisations were able to recruit successfully to emergency care research studies irrespective of size and configuration. Further investigation of their models of working and strategies for engagement is needed. Experienced research nurses made a positive difference to recruitment and were more likely to approach patients to obtain consent. Relevance to clinical practice: The understanding and experiences of recruitment to clinical trials in emergency care research by research nurses can help identify barriers to recruitment. This study provides useful insights for healthcare practitioners, clinical trials coordinators and sponsors about how best to develop protocols and policies to increase recruitment to emergency care research. Aims and objectives: To measure the effect of chair resistance training (RT) on the quality of life (QoL) of older long‐term care residents with sarcopenic obesity (SO). Background: Sarcopenia combined with obesity, commonly called SO, is considered to be related to health‐related QoL. Despite concerns regarding SO‐related long‐term healthcare issues, intervention studies on SO residents in nursing homes are scant in Taiwan. Design: This research was a quasi‐experiment conducted according to the TREND Checklist. A total of 123 older persons were enrolled from six nursing facilities. The RT was implemented between October 2015–March 2016. Method: The intervention group received progressive RT with sandbags/dumbbells twice a week for 3 months, whereas the comparison group received the usual care. QoL was the major outcome variable. Data were analysed using chi‐square test, Student's t test and generalised estimating equation (GEE). Results: The various definition criteria for SO can influence the results of QoL in the older persons. From the body composition perspective, in the GEE analysis, the SO cut‐off points for neither skeletal muscle mass percentage (SMMp) nor appendicular skeletal muscle mass index demonstrated significant between‐group differences in the QoL variable after the 3‐month RT intervention. Between‐group analysis revealed a significant effect of time on anxiety/depression [Exp(B): 0.41, 95% confidence interval: 0.18–0.93, p‐value <.05] in participants who met all three criteria of the definition of SO (low SMMp, low handgrip strength, and obesity). RT was one of the protective factors. Conclusion: In the SO group, the effect of muscle strength on QoL is greater than the effect of changes in body composition after RT. Aim and Objectives: The aim of this was to examine the effect of bladder training on bladder functions. Background: Urinary catheterization is frequently performed in order to evaluate the outcomes of the surgical procedures and to monitor the urine output after urology operations. Design and Methods: This quasi‐experimental study was conducted in the urology clinic in Istanbul, Turkey in which 50 males were nonrandomly assigned to either a bladder training (n = 28) or a control group (n =22). In the bladder training groups, the urinary catheters of the patients were clamped at 4‐hr intervals and then were left open for 5 min on the second postoperative day. This study was created in accordance with TREND Statement Checklist. Results: The first urgency time and the first voiding time were longer, and the prevoiding and the voiding volumes were higher following the removal of the catheter in the training group (p = 0.001). In addition, the evaluation of the patient bladder diaries in the first three days after the discharge period revealed that the daily frequencies of micturition and nocturia were lower (p = 0.04), the mean duration of intervals between the micturition was longer (p = 0.006), and the mean voided urinary volume was higher (p = 0.024) in the training group. Conclusion: At the end of the study, it is observed that bladder training performed by clamping the catheter on postoperative day 2 after Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TUR‐P) operation is a significant positive effect on the storage symptoms of the patients. Relevance to clinical practice: Before removing the urinary catheter, bladder training programme affects positively to patients, especially prevoiding and the voiding volumes, the daily frequencies of micturition and nocturia on postoperative periods. Aims and objectives: This study aimed to reduce indwelling urinary catheter (IDC) use and duration through implementation of a multifaceted "bundled" care intervention. Background: Indwelling urinary catheters present a risk for patients through the potential development of catheter‐associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), with duration of IDC a key risk factor. Catheter‐associated urinary tract infection is considered preventable yet accounts for over a third of all hospital‐acquired infections. The most effective CAUTI reduction strategy is to avoid IDC use where ever possible and to remove the IDC as early as appropriate. Design: A cluster‐controlled pre‐ and poststudy at a facility level with a phased intervention implementation approach. Methods: A multifaceted intervention involving a "No CAUTI" catheter care bundle was implemented, in 4 acute‐care hospitals, 2 in metropolitan and 2 in rural locations, in New South Wales, Australia. Indwelling urinary catheter point prevalence and duration data were collected at the bedside on 1,630 adult inpatients at preintervention and 1,677 and 1,551 at 4 and 9 months postintervention. This study is presented in line with the StaRI checklist (see Appendix S1). Results: A nonsignificant trend towards reduction in IDC prevalence was identified, from 12% preintervention to 10% of all inpatients at 4 and 9 months. Variability in preintervention IDC prevalence existed across hospitals (8%–16%). Variability in reduction was evident across hospitals at 4 months (between −2% and 4%) and 9 months (between 0%–8%). Hospitals with higher preintervention prevalence showed larger decreases, up to 50% when preintervention prevalence was 16%. Indwelling urinary catheter duration increased as more of the short‐term IDC placements were avoided. Conclusions: Implementation of a multifaceted intervention resulted in reduced IDC use in four acute‐care hospitals in Australia. This result was not statistically significant but did reflect a positive trend of reduction. There was a significant reduction in short‐term IDC use at 9 months postintervention. Relevance to clinical practice: Clinical nurse leaders can effectively implement change strategies that influence patient outcomes. Implementation of the evidence‐based "No CAUTI" bundle increased awareness of appropriate indications and provided nurses with the tools to inform decision‐making related to insertion and removal of IDCs in acute inpatient settings. Aims and objectives: To test the effectiveness of a musical training programme in promoting happiness and quality of life of Hong Kong Chinese underprivileged preschool children. Background: The impact of poverty and income disparity on the psychological well‐being of children remains a profound global public health concern. There is substantial evidence that poverty and income disparity have many negative impacts on children's psychological well‐being, adversely affecting their quality of life. Methods: A nonequivalent, quasi‐experimental, two‐group, pretest and post‐test, between‐subjects design was conducted with 171 Hong Kong Chinese underprivileged preschool children (aged 3–6 years). Participants (n = 100) in the experimental group attended a weekly 1‐hr musical training lesson for 12 weeks conducted by the Music Children Foundation. Participants (n = 71) in the wait list control group received the same training after all data had been collected. Data collection for both groups was conducted at baseline and 12‐week follow‐up. The measured outcomes were happiness level and quality of life. A TREND checklist was completed. Results: Participants in the experimental group reported significantly higher levels of happiness (p = .002) and quality of life (p = .44) than those in the wait list control group. Conclusions: The present study indicates the effectiveness of a musical training programme in promoting happiness and quality of life of Hong Kong Chinese underprivileged preschool children. It also demonstrated the feasibility of implementing the programme in a community context. Relevance to clinical practice: This study aids to inform nurses the beneficial effect of the musical training programme in improving underprivileged children's psychological well‐being and quality of life. Indeed, community nurses may act as facilitators to promote the musical training programme to underprivileged children. Aims and objectives: To investigate whether a symposium aimed at healthcare professionals in the uro‐oncological field changes knowledge, competence and general practice regarding sexual dysfunction after prostate cancer treatment. Background: Sexual dysfunction is not frequently discussed by healthcare professionals; lack of knowledge and training are two of the most often reported barriers. Provision of additional training could improve knowledge, competence and general practice of healthcare professionals. Design: Two questionnaires were used in this pre–post study to determine knowledge, competence and general practice at the time of the symposium and six months afterwards. Methods: In order to perform repeated measures to analyse alterations among participating healthcare professionals (n = 55), the McNemar's test was used. A STROBE checklist was completed. Results: Seventy‐three per cent (n = 40) stated that not enough attention was paid to prostate cancer‐related sexual dysfunction during their education. Nurses felt significantly less competent in discussing sexual function, advising on sexual dysfunction and actively inquiring sexual complaints compared to other healthcare professionals. After the symposium, sexual dysfunction was significantly more often discussed. No significant effects were found on knowledge on sexual dysfunction, knowledge on treatment of sexual dysfunction, competence in discussing sexual function, advising on sexual dysfunction, actively inquiring sexual complaints and rate of referral. Tools needed to address sexual dysfunction concerned written information materials (75.5%) and a website containing adequate information (56.6%). Conclusions: The symposium had no significant influence on knowledge, competence and rate of referral in men with sexual dysfunction after prostate cancer treatment. However, sexual dysfunction was more frequently discussed after the symposium, so increase of awareness of consequences of prostate cancer treatment was achieved. Relevance to clinical practice: Consequences of prostate cancer treatment to sexual function should be taken in consideration in daily practice; written information materials and a website containing adequate information were indicated as valuable resources to address sexual dysfunction in routine consultations.
