The nanoparameters of the membrane from actinobacteria have been determined by the method of neutron diffraction on multilamellar lipid membranes. It was found that the repeat distance of a partly hydrated membrane formed from the phosphohpid fraction of Streptomyces hygroscopicus (S. hygroscopicus) is 85.8 +/- 0.5 A at T = 20 degrees C and decreases to 83.5 +/- 0.5 A at T = 40 degrees C. Some lipids are not incorporated into the bilayer and form the liquid micellar phase with micelles of size 54.2 +/- 0.2 A.

Seven hundred and ninety Drosophila melanogaster genes, alternatively spliced in coding regions were considered together with their Drosophila pseudoobscura orthologs. It was found that nucleotide substitutions in alternative coding regions accumulate more intensively than in constitutive regions. Moreover, the evolutionary pattern of alternative regions depends on their inclusion mechanisms (use of alternative promoters, splicing sites or polyadenylation sites) significantly. The rate of synonymous substitutions varies is more dramatically than that of nonsynonymous substitutions. Nucleotide substitution patterns in different classes of alternative regions of mammalian and Drosophila genes have little in common.

EDAS, a database of alternatively spliced human genes, contains data on the alignment of proteins, mRNAs, and EST. It contains information on all exons and introns observed, as well as elementary alternatives formed from them. The database makes it possible to filter the output data by changing the cut-off threshold by the significance level. The database is accessible at http://www.gene-bee.msu.ru/edas/.

A comparative study of the association of two ribonucleases, barnase and binase, with the polypeptide inhibitor barstar has been performed by the Brownian dynamics simulation method. It was shown that the method adequately reproduced the dependence of the association rate on pH and ionic strength of solution and the influence of mutations of some ribonuclease amino acids. Two types of energetically favorable complexes of binase-barstar encounter were determined. In the type I complex, the amino acids of binase active center take part in the complex formation. In the second complex, the active center is free. It was supposed that the temporary binding of barstar into complex of type II is competitive relative to the inhibition reaction. This can partially explain the decrease in the rate of binase inhibition as compared with the corresponding reaction of barnase.

The effect of defibrillating pulses on the functionally determined re-entries (leading circles) was studied by computer simulation. Arrhythmias caused by different numbers of leading circles (from 1 to 18) were investigated. The defibrillation threshold was found to vary 2-4-fold, depending on the time of application of a pulse. At small currents the defibrillation mechanism is principally different from the commonly known one and is linked to the movement of leading circles towards each other or towards the boundary of the excitable tissue.

Interaction between the rotating wave and a periodic external source in the model of Fitz Hugh--Nagumo type was computed. When the periods of the external source are longer than the rotation period of the spiral wave (T greater than Ts) the external source does not affect the spiral wave. At T less than Ts autowave synchronization effects are observed. The oscillation period predetermined by the external source is set in all the points of the medium except the neighbourhood of the spiral wave. The dislocation (wavebreak) persists in the medium drifting slowly at the angle to the wave vector of the flat waves. After the external source is eliminated, the spiral wave with the original period restores from this dislocation. When the dislocation reaches the interface, it disappears. In this case after the switching off of the external source the resting state is established. A theory of the drift is proposed which connects the drift velocity with the nucleus size and the rotation period of spiral wave.
