The paper presents the isolation of a Bacillus species from the industrial effluent of a textile industry in Bangalore that was heavily contaminated with congo red along with other azo dyes. Congo red is a carcinogenic direct diazo dye. Azo compounds constitute the largest and the most diverse group of synthetic dyes and are widely used in a number of industries such as textile, food, cosmetics and paper printing. They are generally recalcitrant to biodegradation due to their xenobiotic nature. However, microorganisms, being highly versatile, have developed enzyme systems for the decolorization and mineralization of azo dyes under certain environmental conditions. In our study, a wide range of bacterial species were isolated from the industrial effluent, and the chemical analysis of the water showed very high concentration of congo red. Cultural, microscopical and biochemical tests showed that Bacillus formed the major biomass. The microscopical tests included the Gram's staining of the bacteria, endospore staining and motility study. The biochemical activity of the bacteria was confirmed by a set of tests that included IMViC, starch hydrolysis, oxidase test, etc. The growth studies showed that the Bacillus species utilized congo red at different concentrations ranging from 25-100 mg L

India is witnessing a retail explosion. Leverage of the enormously available customer data for aligning precious resources with customers' needs makes it imperative for retail managers to deploy advanced tools and techniques for data analysis and generation of reports for effective decision-making. While a host of analytical processes and tools are available, a retailer needs to invest selectively and adopt to those applications that are proven to be successful, and resulted in substantial savings in terms of money, time and shelf space. This paper, apart from highlighting the relevance and efficacy of analytics for retail industry in India, also deals with a live study undertaken at Fresh Greens Bangalore, where Market Basket Analysis (MBA) and advanced demand forecasting techniques have been used for understanding the demand associations of different fruits and vegetables and fine-tuning their operations. Based on the findings of this study, certain conclusions, not only specific to Fresh Greens, but generally applicable to fruits and vegetables retailers in India, have been drawn and suggestions are provided for enhancing the operational efficiency and effectiveness. A theoretical framework to analyse the interaction of planning and governance on the extent of outgrowth and level of services is proposed. An indicator framework for quantifying sprawl is also proposed and the same is operationalised for Bangalore. The indicators comprise spatial metrics (derived from temporal satellite remote sensing data) and other metrics obtained from a household survey. The interaction of different indicators with respect to the core city and the outgrowth is determined by multidimensional scaling. The analysis reveals the underlying similarities (and dissimilarities) that relate with the different governance structures that prevail here. The paper concludes outlining the challenges in addressing urban sprawl while ensuring adequate level of services that planning and governance have to ensure towards achieving sustainable urbanisation. The quality of life of the migrant households in a slum of Bangalore is the focus of this paper. Accessibility to vital needs such as housing, water and sanitation, electricity and Healthcare institutions are taken into account to comprehend the quality of life. In addition, migration details of the sample households are discussed. The study exhibits that the households have adequate access to water, sanitation and electricity facilities. Though the houses were mostly semi-pucca, the residents live in one-room houses that are considerably small in size. Besides, they lack access to proper public Healthcare facility. Yet, due to political patronage and the presence of a local non-government organization, the slum residents are facilitated to a larger extent. By making use of the services of such informal institutions and the local community, the State can help in better provision of basic needs and thereby improve their quality of life. URBANIZATION ,URBAN growth ,DEVELOPING countries ,INFRASTRUCTURE (Economics) - Abstract
Rapid urbanization has been posing a serious threat to urban development for want of effective planning and infrastructure availability in the cities of developing countries. Bangalore, one such city with global importance as a capital of Information Technology and Biotechnology, has been experiencing acute problems due to rapid urbanization, area expansion, lack of planning and poor infrastructure. The recent initiative by the Government of Karnataka to form 'Greater Bangalore' by increasing the municipal area of the city by more than two times the existing area has posed more problems to development. This paper, while providing an analysis of the development of Bangalore city from a historical perspective, examines the present status and provides several solutions to make the city an affordable urban center. In the current capitalist world, several theoretical and conceptual studies have established that man is effortlessly irrational in nature at the time of making investment decisions. Behavioral finance concentrates on how psychological effects can affect market outcomes. Thus, this concept is gaining more significance as it helps in elucidating the difference between the actual behavior and the expectations of a resourceful and rational investor behavior. Therefore, it is important to understand the behavior due to the uncertainty in the Indian economy. The present study examines the significance of behavioral finance in filling the gap between the actual decisions and influencing variables by comparing the different heuristics prevailing in India (Bengaluru city) with the help of various types of investors. Moderating effects are used, and technical anomalies are examined based on different heuristic concepts like anchoring and adjustment, herd mentality, overconfidence, outcome bias and self-control bias. The type of investors chosen for this study are conservative, moderate, aggressive, and retired investors. India is chosen as it is a developing country and the economy is prone to misfortunes arising out of the impacts, that is, volatility in the stock market and mispricing of the securities. A statistical study is carried out to evaluate the impact of heuristics on investment decision making and the results show that there is a significant difference between some of the heuristics adopted and the various types of investors' decision making. The Indian retail industry witnessed high growth over the last decade with a noticeable shift towards organized retailing. The foraying of organized players into retailing fresh produce has been much debated in the recent past, in view of its pros and cons. The contentions of the advocates and contenders of organized retailing warrant rigorous study and thorough analysis from the perspective of diverse stakeholders. The present study elicits the views of diverse stakeholders in Bangalore city, covering organized retailers (N = 20), unorganized retailers (N = 100) and consumers (N = 500) picked by stratified random sampling technique, on select issues of organized retailing. ANOVA test showed significant difference among the respondent groups at 0.00% level towards many of the select issues of the study. The larger role for organized retailers is indispensable, especially to build and strengthen backend infrastructure and to enhance supply chain efficiency. It is imperative for the government and organized retailers to address the genuine concerns of those who are likely to be adversely affected by growth in organized retailing, and dispel undue apprehensions and misplaced concerns. The quality of education is determined by the quality of teachers. To enhance the quality of a teacher, one must know who he/she is, and have understanding of oneself, which refers to self-concept. Self-concept refers to the perception of one's characteristics, abilities and concept of self. Based on this understanding of the importance of self-concept for teachers, a study was conducted to assess the self-concept of college teachers in Bangalore city. The responses of 159 college teachers were examined using the self-concept scale for teachers developed by Pillai (1989). The analysis was carried out for teachers across different types of school management (government, aided and unaided). The results indicate that unaided college teachers have higher self-concept scores (4.23) as compared to government (3.64) and aided college teachers (3.56). ANOVA analysis indicates that college teachers working in government, aided and unaided colleges differ significantly with respect to self-concept scores and on all dimensions of self-concept, namely, social self-concept, teaching effectiveness, academic problem solving and general self-esteem.
