Loneliness is a global public health issues contributing to a variety of mental and physical health issues. It also increases the risk of life-threatening conditions as well as contributes to burden on the economy in terms of the number of days lost to productivity. Loneliness is a highly varied concept though, which is a result of multiple factors. To understand loneliness this paper carries out a comparative analysis of USA and India through Twitter data on the keywords associated with loneliness. The comparative analysis on loneliness is in the vein of comparative public health literature and to contribute to develop a global public health map on loneliness. The results showed that the dynamics of loneliness through the topics correlated vary across geographical locations. Social media data can be used to capture the dynamics of loneliness which can vary from one place to another depending on the socioeconomic and cultural norms and sociopolitical policies. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that affects a significant portion of the global population. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool for predicting T2DM risk. To provide an overview of the AI techniques used for long-term prediction of T2DM and evaluate their performance, we conducted a scoping review using PRISMA-ScR. Of the 40 papers included in this review, 23 studies used Machine Learning (ML) as the most common AI technique, with Deep Learning (DL) models used exclusively in four studies. Of the 13 studies that used both ML and DL, 8 studies employed ensemble learning models, and SVM and RF were the most used individual classifiers. Our findings highlight the importance of accuracy and recall as validation metrics, with accuracy being used in 31 studies, followed by recall in 29 studies. These discoveries emphasize the critical role of high predictive accuracy and sensitivity in detecting positive T2DM cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to support medical students' learning journeys, providing personalized experiences and improved outcomes. We conducted a scoping review to explore the current application and classifications of AI in medical education. Following the PRISMA-P guidelines, we searched four databases, ultimately including 22 studies. Our analysis identified four AI methods used in various medical education domains, with the majority of applications found in training labs. The use of AI in medical education has the potential to improve patient outcomes by equipping healthcare professionals with better skills and knowledge. Post-implementation refers to the outcomes of AI-based training, which showed improved practical skills among medical students. This scoping review explores the advantages and disadvantages of using ChatGPT in medical education. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline, Scopus, and Science Direct to identify relevant studies. Two reviewers independently conducted study selection and data extraction, followed by a narrative synthesis. Out of 197 references, 25 studies met the eligibility criteria. The primary applications of ChatGPT in medical education include automated scoring, teaching assistance, personalized learning, research assistance, quick access to information, generating case scenarios and exam questions, content creation for learning facilitation, and language translation. We also discuss the challenges and limitations of using ChatGPT in medical education, such as its inability to reason beyond existing knowledge, generation of incorrect information, bias, potential undermining of students' critical thinking skills, and ethical concerns. The current state of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms used to detect, classify and predict the onset of retinal detachment (RD) were examined in this scoping review. This severe eye condition can cause vision loss if left untreated. By analyzing the medical imaging modalities such as fundus photography, AI could help to detect peripheral detachment at an earlier stage. We have searched five databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and IEEE. Two reviewers independently carried out the selection of the studies and their data extractions. 32 studies fulfilled our eligibility criteria from the 666 references collected. In particular, based on the performance metrics employed in these studies, this scoping review provides a general overview of emerging trends and practices concerning using ML and DL algorithms for detecting, classifying, and predicting RD. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide, and its diagnosis and classification remain challenging for pathologists and imaging specialists. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, specifically deep learning, has emerged as a potential solution to improve the accuracy and speed of classification while maintaining the quality of care. In this scoping review, we aimed to explore the utilization of deep learning for the classification of different types of colorectal cancer. We searched five databases and selected 45 studies that met our inclusion criteria. Our results show that deep learning models have been used to classify colorectal cancer using various types of data, with histopathology and endoscopy images being the most common. The majority of studies used CNN as their classification model. Our findings provide an overview of the current state of research on deep learning in the classification of colorectal cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive form of breast cancer that presents very high relapse and mortality. However, due to differences in the genetic architecture associated with TNBC, patients have different outcomes and respond differently to available treatments. In this study, we predicted the overall survival of TNBC patients in the METABRIC cohort employing supervised machine learning to identify important clinical and genetic features that are associated with better survival. The aim of metabolomics research is to identify the metabolites that play a role in various biological traits and diseases. This scoping review provides an overview of the current state of metabolomics studies that focus on the Qatari population. Our findings indicate that few studies have been conducted on this population, with a focus on diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. Blood samples were the primary source of metabolite identification, and several potential biomarkers for these diseases were proposed. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that causes complications with thinking capability, memory and behavior. AD is a major public health problem among the elderly in developed and developing countries. With the growth of AD around the world, there is a need to further expand our understanding of the roles different clinical measurements can have in the diagnosis of AD. In this work, we propose a machine learning-based technique to distinguish control subjects with no cognitive impairments, AD subjects, and subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often seen as precursors of AD. We utilized several machine learning (ML) techniques and found that Gradient Boosting Decision Trees achieved the highest performance above 84% classification accuracy. Also, we determined the importance of the features (clinical biomarkers) contributing to the proposed multi-class classification system. Qatar's digital health initiatives are growing through the development of research capacity, innovative technologies, and academic programs to serve the national health needs of the country. The digital health community of Qatar lacks the adequate representation of a professional body to serve the needs of the community. The purpose of this paper is to develop a strategic framework for the Health Informatics Association of Qatar (HIAQ) and present the preliminary findings of this effort. We utilized a multi-stage mixed methods approach in the development of HIAQ's strategic framework. We first reviewed the relevant literature, interviewed key stakeholders within the region, validated our findings with local stakeholders, and adapted the strategic directions to conform with Qatari laws. We present the purpose, organizational structure, vision, mission, and aims of HIAQ. Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) are used in a clinical setting to help physicians make decisions to improve clinical performance and patient care. There are many benefits to the implementation and adoption of CDSSs, such as reducing the rate of misdiagnosis, improving efficiency and patient care, and reducing the risk of medication errors. On the other hand, CDSSs can have several disadvantages. For example, physicians can see CDSSs as a threat to their clinical autonomy. CDSSs can also be very costly to adopt, maintain, and support. These advantages and disadvantages can have both positive and negative impacts on physicians. We conducted a scoping review to explore the impact of CDSSs on physicians. We searched the following electronic databases: CINAHL, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Two reviewers independently selected the retrieved studies and extracted data from the included studies. A narrative approach was used to synthesize the extracted data. We included 14 studies of the 300 retrieved studies. We identified the following positive impacts: work efficiency, providing more personalized care, improving care and knowledge, increasing confidence in making decisions, improving prescribing behavior, and reducing the number of ordered laboratory and medical imaging tests. Several negative impacts were also reported by the studies, namely: inefficient documentation, interruption in the patient-physician communication, and an increase in unnecessary referrals. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) trigger a high number of deaths across the world. In this study, we investigate the food, drinking, smoking, and lifestylerelated habits for a Qatari CVD cohort to understand the implication of these factors on CVD. Statistical analysis shows that the CVD group is consuming a lower amount of fast foods, soft drinks, snacks, and meats compared to the control group. Alarmingly, the level of smoking is still higher in the CVD group, and the consumption level of healthy items (e.g., cereal, cornflakes) in breakfast is relatively lower compared to the control group. Interestingly, the CVD cohort is spending more time walking and avoiding heavy sports, compared to the control group, but their involvement in moderate physical activities is lower than the control group. Overall, we conclude that the Qatari CVD cohort is following most of the standard guidelines related to food items and heavy sports; however, the cohort should reduce smoking habits, and may modify the moderate level of physical activity based on physician guidelines. The heterogeneous localized concepts of various hospitals reduce interoperability among localized data models of Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and the knowledge bases of clinical decision support systems (CDSS). The leading solution to overcome the interoperability barrier is the reconciliation of standard medical terminologies with localized data models. In this paper, we extend the semantic reconciliation model (SRM) to provide mappings among diverse concepts of localized domain clinical models (DCM) and concepts of standard medical terminologies such as Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT). In the extended SRM, we insert the explicit semantics only into the word vector of the localized DCM concepts instead of the implicit semantics, which enhances the system's accuracy with a lower computational cost. The extended SRM performed well on the datasets of localized DCM and SNOMED CT with a precision of 0.95, a recall of 0.92, and an F-measure of 0.93. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pneumonia is a severe health problem causing millions of deaths every year. The aim of this study was to develop an advanced deep learning-based architecture to detect pneumonia using chest X-ray images. We utilized a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on VGG16 architecture consisting of 16 fully connected convolutional layers. A total of 5856 high-resolution frontal view chest X-ray images were used for training, validating, and testing the model. The model achieved an accuracy of 96.6%, sensitivity of 98.1%, specificity of 92.4%, precision of 97.2%, and a F1 Score of 97.6%. This indicates that the model has an excellent performance in classifying pneumonia cases and normal cases. We believe, the proposed model will reduce physician workload, expand the performance of pneumonia screening programs, and improve healthcare service. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we analyze the food and lifestyle-related factors for a Diabetic cohort from Qatar, where the prevalence of diabetes is among the top in the Middle East region. Statistical analysis shows that the diabetic group is consuming a lower amount of fast foods, soft drinks and meats as a meal but a higher amount of vegetables and fruits compared to the control group. Though the diabetic cohort consumes a lower number of snacks and desserts, they consume a higher amount of sugar for tea. Interestingly, we find the diabetes cohort is spending a lower amount of time in sedentary life but their involvement in different physical activities is lower than the control group. Overall, we conclude that the Qatari diabetic cohort, considered in this study, is following standard guidelines for food and drinks but they may need to improve the physical activity level following physician guidelines. ChatGPT is a foundation Artificial Intelligence (AI) model that has opened up new opportunities in digital healthcare. Particularly, it can serve as a copilot tool for doctors in the interpretation, summarization, and completion of reports. Furthermore, it can build upon the ability to access the large literature and knowledge on the internet. So, chatGPT could generate acceptable responses for the medical examination. Hence. It offers the possibility of enhancing healthcare accessibility, expandability, and effectiveness. Nonetheless, chatGPT is vulnerable to inaccuracies, false information, and bias. This study aims to develop models to accurately classify patients with type 2 diabetes using the Practice Fusion dataset. We use Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Classifier (SVC), AdaBoost classifier, an ensemble model, and automated machine learning (AutoML) model. We compare the performance of all models in a five-fold cross-validation scheme using four evaluation measures. Experimental results demonstrate that the AutoML model outperformed individual and ensemble models in all evaluation measures.

In this study, we addressed the alternative medications that have been targeted in the clinical trials (CTs) to be evidenced as an adjuvant treatment against COVID-19. Based on the outcomes from CTs, we found that dietary supplements such as Lactoferrin, and Probiotics (as SivoMixx) can play a role enhancing the immunity thus can be used as prophylactics against COVID-19 infection. Vitamin D was proven as an effective adjuvant treatment against COVID-19, while Vitamin C role is uncertain and needs more investigation. Herbals such as Guduchi Ghan Vati can be used as prophylactic, while Resveratrol can be used to reduce the hospitalization risk of COVID-19 patients. On the contrary, there were no clinical improvements demonstrated when using Cannabidiol. This study is a part of a two-phase research study. In the first phase, we gathered evidence-based information on alternative therapeutics for COVID-19 that are under CT. In the second phase, we plan to build a mobile health application that will provide evidence based alternative therapy information to health consumers.

Children go through varied emotions such as happiness, sadness, and fear. At times, it may be difficult for children to express their emotions. Detecting and understanding the unexpressed emotions of children is very important to address their needs and prevent mental health issues. In this paper, we develop an artificial intelligence (AI) based Emotion Sensing Recognition App (ESRA) to help parents and teachers understand the emotions of children by analyzing their drawings. We collected 102 drawings from a local school in Doha and 521 drawings from Google and Instagram. Four different experiments were conducted using a combination of the two datasets. The deep learning model was trained using the Fastai library in Python. The model classifies the drawings into positive or negative emotions. The model accuracy ranged from 55% to 79% in the four experiments. This study showed that ESRA has the potential in identifying the emotions of children. However, the underlying algorithm needs to be trained and evaluated using more drawings to improve its current accuracy and to be able to identify more specific emotions.

We explore the effectiveness of serious games for visuospatial abilities among older adults with cognitive impairment by conducting a systematic review. Out of 548 identified publications, seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included in this review. According to a meta-analysis of four RCTs, there is no statistically significant difference (p=0.28) in visuospatial abilities between serious game and control groups. Further, the included RCTs noted no statistically significant difference in the visuospatial ability when comparing serious games to conventional exercise (one study) and other serious games (two studies). One RCT demonstrated a statistically significant effect of serious games on the visuospatial ability when compared with conventional cognitive training. This review could not prove the effectiveness of serious games in enhancing visuospatial abilities for older adults with cognitive impairment. Thus, serious games should not be offered or used for enhancing visuospatial abilities amongst the elderly population with cognitive impairment. More robust RCTs are needed to make firm conclusions on the efficacy of serious games.

The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) have opened new horizons for healthcare technology. AI models, however, rely on large data that must be shared with the centralized entity developing the model. Data sharing leads to privacy preservation and legal issues. Federated Learning (FL) enables the training of AI models on distributed data. Hence, a large amount of IoMT data can be put into use without the need for sharing the data. This paper presents the opportunities offered by FL for privacy preservation in IoMT data. With FL, the complicated dynamics and agreements for data-sharing can be avoided. Furthermore, it describes the use cases of FL in facilitating collaborative efforts to develop AI for COVID-19 diagnosis. Since handling data from multiple sites poses its challenges, the paper also highlights the critical challenges associated with FL developments for IoMT data. Addressing these challenges will lead to gaining maximum benefit from data-driven AI technologies in IoMT.

We studied the suitability of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based models to predict vaccine-critical tweets on the social media platform Twitter. We manually labeled a sample of 800 tweets as either "vaccine-critical" (i.e, anti-vaccine tweets, mentioned concerns related to vaccine safety and efficacy, and are against vaccine mandates or vaccine passports) or "other" (i.e., tweets that are neutral, report news, or are ambiguous) and used them to train and test AI-based models for automatically predicting vaccine-critical tweets. We fine-tuned two pre-trained deep learning-based language models, BERT and BERTweet, and implemented four classical AI-based models, Random Forest, Logistics Regression, Linear Support Vector Machines, and Multinomial Naïve Bayes. We evaluated these AI-based models using f1 score, accuracy, precision, and recall in three-fold cross-validation. We found that BERTweet outperformed all other models using these measures.

This article intended to carry out a systematic review on the effectiveness of serious games for language processing among older adults with cognitive impairment. Out of 548 retrieved records, six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) eventually met the eligibility criteria. A meta-analysis of four studies showed that serious games are more effective than no/passive interventions in enhancing language processing among older adults with cognitive impairment (p=0.008). Further, a statistically significant effect of serious games on language processing when compared with conventional cognitive activities and conventional exercises was reported in two RCTs. Other RCTs found that exergames are as effective as computerized cognitive training games in improving language processing. Serious games should be offered or used as complementary (i.e., not a substitute) to the current interventions. For there to be definitive conclusions about the efficacy of serious games on language processing more trials are needed.

Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can contribute to the early diagnosis of prostate cancer. Recently, there has been a sharp increase in the literature on AI techniques for prostate cancer diagnosis. This review article presents a summary of the AI methods that detect and diagnose prostate cancer using different medical imaging modalities. Following the PRISMA-ScR principle, this review covers 69 studies selected from 1441 searched papers published in the last three years. The application of AI methods reported in these articles can be divided into three broad categories: diagnosis, grading, and segmentation of tissues that have prostate cancer. Most of the AI methods leveraged convolutional neural networks (CNNs) due to their ability to extract complex features. Some studies also reported traditional machine learning methods, such as support vector machines (SVM), decision trees for classification, LASSO, and Ridge regression methods for features extraction. We believe that the implementation of AI-based tools will support clinicians to provide better diagnosis plans for prostate cancer.

For the past ten years, the healthcare sector and industry has witnessed a surge in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies being used in many different medical specialties. Recently, AI-driven technologies have been utilized in medical care for pregnancy. In this work, we present a scoping review that explores the features of AI-driven technologies used in caring for pregnant patients. This review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. Our analysis revealed that AI techniques were used in predicting pregnancy disorders such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, along with managing and treating ectopic pregnancies. We also found that AI technologies were used to assess risk factors and safety surveillance of pregnant women. We believe that AI-driven technologies have the potential to improve the healthcare provided to pregnant women.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a life-threatening type of cancer wherein mortality rate is unquestionably high. Early detection of ALL can reduce both the rate of fatality as well as improve the diagnosis plan for patients. In this study, we developed the ALL Detector (ALLD), which is a deep learning-based network to distinguish ALL patients from healthy individuals based on blast cell microscopic images. We evaluated multiple DL-based models and the ResNet-based model performed the best with 98% accuracy in the classification task. We also compared the performance of ALLD against state-of-the-art tools utilized for the same purpose, and ALLD outperformed them all. We believe that ALLD will support pathologists to explicitly diagnose ALL in the early stages and reduce the burden on clinical practice overall.

Public perception about vaccines is imperative for successful vaccination programs. This study aims to measure the shift of sentiment towards vaccines after the COVID-19 outbreak in the Arab-speaking population. The study used vaccine-related Arabic Tweets and analyzed the sentiment of users in two different time frames, before 2020 (T1) and after 2020 (T2). The analysis showed that in T1, 48.05% of tweets were positive, and 16.47% of tweets were negative. In T2, 43.03% of tweets were positive, and 20.56% of tweets were negative. Among the Twitter users, the sentiment of 15.92% users shifted towards positive, and the sentiment of 17.90% users shifted towards negative. Public sentiment that have shifted towards positive may be due to the hope of vaccine efficacy, whereas public sentiment that have shifted towards negative may be due to the concerns related to vaccine side effects and misinformation. This study can support policymakers in the Arab world to combat the COVID-19 pandemic by utilizing tools to understand public opinion and sentiment.

Many meditation apps have been used to improve the mental wellbeing of individuals. However, little information is available regarding the quality of the applications. This study aims to evaluate meditation apps using the Mobile Applications Rating Scale (MARS). A systematic search for meditation apps was performed on both Android Google Play and Apple iOS Store. We used two keywords to search both app stores: meditation and mindfulness. Out of 623 apps identified, 334 apps were excluded due to language, containing only reminders to meditate, or for not being accessible. A total number of 289 apps remained, of which 280 apps were excluded for being information-only focused, containing religious practices, eating habits, exercises, or for not being free. Therefore, nine apps were included in this review for evaluation. The MARS ratings used in this app review were based on scores from a prior study conducted. The mobile app Headspace had the highest average (4), which is rated as 'good' based on MARS. The remaining apps were rated as acceptable with averages that ranged from 3.2-3.7.

Echocardiography (echo) is a non-invasive, safe, widely available imaging modality that is frequently used to assess the heart structure and function. Accurate heart chamber segmentation is an essential step to quantify certain parameters, including heart chamber volumes. In clinical practice, this task is manually done by echo experts, where it consumes considerable time and is subjective to both errors as well as intra-operator variability. Artificial intelligence (AI) models have been used to automatically segment heart chambers. We conducted a scoping review to provide an overview of the AI models used for this task. Three bibliographic databases; PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar were explored. Out of 640 initially retrieved studies, 36 studies were included. Multiple AI models used for echo images segmentation were identified, which can be broadly categorized into five methods: low-level image processing, deformable-based, statistical techniques, machine learning (ML), and deep learning-based (DL) techniques. The initial three categories were relatively simple and required less computational complexity compared to the ML and DL models. The convolutional neural network was the most widely used DL-based technique in most-recent publications. Generalizability of the models is a major concern that needs to be addressed in the future. Well-annotated larger 2D echo image datasets would be required to mitigate the challenges to some extent.
