Museums face problems in acquiring information. In Canada, the government is working to link the country's far flung museums with networks. Rising costs make the government rely more heavily on technology. Four networks are now in existence: the Canadian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI), QL Systems, the University of Toronto Library Automation System (UTLAS) and the National Library of Canada (NLC). These systems provide information retrieval, data bases, library processing, cataloging support, and bibliographic services. Limitations include regional coverage, lack of advanced software and no real cooperation. This may change with the proposed decentralized information network. The National Museum Corporation is also pursuing decentralization through networks, services and exhibition centers. The Canadian Heritage Information Network is to catalog art and set up a national data base with on-line indexing and retrieval. It is hoped that museum networks will be linked. An organization chart showing the National Museum Corporation is included.
