Curtailment is a known phenomenon for wind turbine operators of both onshore and offshore wind turbine generators (WTG). Curtailment refers to the situation in which the power output of all WTG’s within a windfarm is forced below the expected power output at the occurring environmental conditions. A direct consequence of curtailment is the loss of power production. In the present contribution further consequences of curtailment of an offshore wind farm (OWF) are studied from the perspective of the support structure, in specific the foundation. In relation to curtailment a couple of potentially critical operational conditions impacting the fatigue consumption of the support structure can be identified. Besides the standstill during operational windspeed conditions, in specific damaging for the +7MW generation WTG’s, curtailment introduces repeated transitions between operational conditions. Since transitions between operational conditions of a WTG are known to be a cause of high fatigue loads in the structural components of the WTG, their increased occurrence due to curtailment might also have an impact on the fatigue consumption of the support structure. With the growing interest of the industry to quantify and potentially optimize the structural lifetime consumption in view of potential lifetime extension of OWF assets, any potential fatigue damaging operational condition is to be investigated. The present work focusses on the investigation of the impact these transitional load cycles may have on the structural lifetime of the WTG foundation. To assess the impact on lifetime, the assessment of the damage equivalent loads (DEL) derived from structural health monitoring (SHM) data are used as a data-driven alternative for model-based load simulations. In the present work such data-driven lifetime assessment studies the impact of curtailment regimes with different frequency of stop and start cycles on the structural lifetime. The study is performed based on 1 year of SHM data collected from two OWF’s. The assessment demonstrates that the impact of additional transitional load cycles on the structural fatigue life consumption is to be considered when defining a long-term curtailment strategy for an OWF.

This paper describes the development of a physics-, SCADA-based model able to predict the expected lifetime for wind turbine drivetrains. A real-time coupled torsional gearbox-generator model is developed using the bond graph approach in the software 20SIM. The model uses SCADA data with a sampling frequency of one hertz to impose a load reference on the wind turbine for the simulation model. From the SCADA measurements, rotor torque is estimated and used as input load to the wind turbine rotor, while generator speed is used as reference in the control loop for maximum power point tracking. Shaft torsion is used to predict highspeed shaft radial and axial bearing loads from static equilibrium. The load amplitude and the number of stress cycles are calculated using the load duration distribution method and damage is calculated using Miner’s rule. Expected lifetime is predicted by linear extrapolation of the accumulated fatigue damage to the fatigue limit. Results show that the model can capture the torsional and electrical dynamics and that the model results agree with the reference input. The radial bearing loads match well with literature where additional sensors are used to determine the loads.

The focus of this study is to investigate under high turbulence intensity the performance and wake characteristics of a pair of closely spaced counter-rotating vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) in wind tunnel-controlled conditions. To achieve this, wind tunnel experiments for an isolated VAWT and dual VAWTs are conducted. A squared-mesh wooden grid is placed upstream of the wind turbines to increase the level of free stream turbulence. The wind tunnel tests confirm the increase in power coefficient of paired VAWTs in turbulent flows compared to smooth flows. Additionally, this study analyses the near-wake downstream of the paired turbines in both smooth and turbulent flows to better understand the flow physics.

Suppose you are suddenly assigned to a bare classroom instead of your nicely equipped physics room. What can you do to still have a clear and exciting lesson? In this workshop I present a collection of small and quick demonstrations and visualizations for secondary education, which require no equipment beyond what is present in a typical lecture room or bare classroom (chalk, chairs, students, books, paper, student bags and typical contents). The nature of the demos is varied, some are to verify an explanation, but most are to illustrate, visualize, or simulate. In the workshop participants will add their own ideas.

Event Horizon, a null hypersurface defining the boundary of the black hole region of a spacetime, is not particularly useful for evolving black holes since it is non-local in time. Instead, one uses the more tangible concept of Apparent Horizon for dynamical black holes out there in the sky that do all sorts of things: evolve, merge and feed on the environment. Event Horizon, being a gauge-independent, global property of the total spacetime is easy to define and locate in the stationary case; on the other hand, Apparent Horizon depends on the embedding of the surface in spacetime and hence it is somewhat tricky to define. But for numerical simulations in General Relativity, locating the Apparent Horizon helps one to excise the black hole region and the singularity to have a stable computation. Moreover, for stationary solutions the two horizons match. In the present work, the flexural strength of Ti3Al(Si)C2-based composites was investigated at 25, 800 and 1000 °C using small punch technique. The composites were spark plasma sintered at 1150 °C and 50 MPa from preceramic paper with Ti3Al(Si)C2powder filler. Sintered composites represent a multi-phase system with secondary TiC and Al2O3phases and have more than 900 MPa of flexural strength at room temperature. It was revealed that at 800 °C the flexural strength of composites decreases to 690 MPa. At 1000 °C, the flexural strength of composites further decreased to 620 MPa, however, an anomalous displacement of punch was detected during the fracture test attributed to the Ti3Al(Si)C2brittle-to-plastic transition of the fracture mechanism.

Protective coatings are designed to reduce oxidation under extreme reactor temperature conditions. This study involves the application of a SiC coating on an E110 (Zr-1Nb) substrate in an atmosphere of air and argon by selective laser sintering (SLS) technique in which high-temperature oxidation test (HT-Ox) was performed on samples at a temperature of 1200 °C in air for 600 seconds. Calculated mass gained after HT-Ox test gave 34.6 mg/cm2, 31.1 mg/cm2, and 22.8 mg/cm2 for uncoated E110 alloy, SiC-E110 sintered in air and SiC-E110 sintered in an argon atmosphere respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) phase studies show the formation of more than 90% ZrO2 on the uncoated E110 alloy after HT-Ox. SiO2 and YAlO3 accounted for more than 50% of the oxides formed on the surfaces of samples coated with SiC after a HT-Ox test. Higher coating hardness’s with lower indentation depths were consistently observed in the SiC coated specimen before and after HT-Ox tests proving stability in the coated samples while higher indentation depths and sudden quadrupling in hardness was recorded in E110 alloy before and after HT-Ox respectively. SiC coating on Zr-alloy plays a significant role in reducing oxidation, especially in coatings fabricated in an inert environment.

The results of experiments on low-energy implantation of AISI 321 stainless steel by nitrogen ions are presented. The treatment was carried out by a pulsed beam of nitrogen ions obtained using a ballistic ion focusing system. The surface modification occurs with the formation of a two-layer structure, which is typical for ion-plasma nitriding processes of stainless steels. The thickness of the modified layer can reach 27 μm after 1 hour of ion-plasma treatment. The influence of subsequent modification of the ion-doped layer by the action on the surface of the pulsed high-current electron beam of microsecond duration is studied. The work presents the results of the studying the regularities of changes in the depth distribution of dopants, microstructure and phase composition of the modified and matrix layers by optical metallography, diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy.

The problem of food waste in Indonesia is an important issue to overcome. Indonesia is the second-largest producer of food waste in the World. This makes national food waste issues get more attention. This paper aims to identify problems in food waste prevention, to formulate prototype of food waste application, to design digital platform-based business models innovation that complies with consumer preferences, and to map the impact generated by the presence of Re-Food. The method used are the customer discovery method with a qualitative descriptive approach and business model innovation methods. The results of this paper are verified social enterprise business model innovation offering an application that can help in utilizing excess food and help in the social problems of hunger and poverty. The potential impact generated by the Re-Food business model is the opportunity to contribute to social problems by utilizing environmental issues and increasing education on environmental issues, especially in food waste issues.

Core conversion requires some evaluation of the reactor safety. Changes to the reactivity worth, shutdown margin, power density and material properties are crucial to the proper functioning of the reactor. The focus of this article is to study the neutron flux distribution in the reactor core and radiation damage on candidate clads. The Ghana Research Reactor-1 (GHARR-1) operates at maximum power of 30 kW in order to attain a flux of 1.0× 1012 n·cm–2·s for the high enriched uranium core. Using the GHARR-1 core geometry, considering 348 fuel pins, the multiplication factor (Keff) is calculated at enrichments of 10%, 12.5%, 16%, 20%, 30% and 90.2%. The spectrum of neutron flux generated in the 26 group is also calculated at the specified enrichments. The ion/particle interactions with the targets (clad) were studied in the Stopping and Range of Ion in Matter code to establish the best clad material based on recorded defects and vacancies generated. From the calculations and simulations, the best choice from the candidate clads based on the assessment is SiC. The calculation of the fuel campaign length gives 7.5 years. The defects sustained by the prospective clad showed low susceptibility to swelling and other forms of deformation.

We present a derivation of a manifestly symmetric form of the stress-energy-momentum using the mathematical tools of exterior algebra and exterior calculus, bypassing the standard symmetrizations of the canonical tensor. In a generalized flat space-time with arbitrary time and space dimensions, the tensor is found by evaluating the invariance of the action to infinitesimal space-time translations, using Lagrangian densities that are linear combinations of dot products of multivector fields. An interesting coordinate-free expression is provided for the divergence of the tensor, in terms of the interior and exterior derivatives of the multivector fields that form the Lagrangian density. A generalized Leibniz rule, applied to the variation of action, allows to obtain a conservation law for the derived stress-energy-momentum tensor. We finally show an application to the generalized theory of electromagnetism. Recent results from pre-clinical studies investigating the so-called FLASH effect suggest that the ultrahigh pulse dose rates (UHPDR) of this modality reduces normal tissue damage whilst preserving tumour response, when compared with conventional radiotherapy (RT). FLASH-RT is characterized by average dose rates of dozens of Gy/s instead of only a few Gy/min. For some studies, dose rates exceeding hundreds of Gy/s have been used for investigating the tissue response. Moreover, depending on the source of radiation, pulsed beams can be used with low repetition rate and large doses per pulse. Accurate dosimetry of high dose-rate particle beams is challenging and requires the development of novel dosimetric approaches, complementary to the ones used for conventional radiotherapy. The European Joint Research Project “UHDpulse” will develop a measurement framework, encompassing reference standards traceable to SI units and validated reference methods for dose measurements with UHPDR beams. In this paper, the UHDpulse project will be presented, discussing the dosimetric challenges and showing some first results obtained in experimental campaigns with pulsed electron beams and laser-driven proton beams.

This paper aims to investigate the drivetrain load response caused by induction and wake steering control on two floating wind turbines (FWTs) in a wind farm. In this study, two DTU 10 MW turbines, supported on the nautilus floater, are modelled using FAST.Farm. The downstream turbine is placed at the distance of seven rotor diameters (D) from the upstream turbine in the positive wind direction. Partial wake shading is considered for wake steering control and full wake shading is considered for induction control. An ambient wind speed of 8m/s is used and a representative sea state is selected. The test cases are defined based on different blade pitch and yaw angles of the upstream turbine. Power generation of the offshore wind farm is studied under different test cases. A decouped analysis approach is used to investigate drivetrain response. Global responses are obtained from FAST.Farm. These loads are used as input of the 10 MW wind turbine drivetrain model for the gears and bearings load response analysis. Results show that both induction and wake steering control lead to a limited increase in power generation of the wind farm. Additionally, both control methods affect the drivetrain response statistics, while the features are different. This study facilitates a better understanding on drivetrain dynamic behaviour in a wind farm perspective, which serves as a reference for the wind farm optimizaton in the future. E-J traces have been measured on an inclined substrate deposition coated conductor up to 0.7 T as a function of angle at 77K. A large change in J c is seen on reversal of the direction of the magnetic field, associated with different surface barriers to flux nucleation. The effect of angular hysteresis and field hysteresis on J c has been found to be much smaller. Narrow bridges have been successfully fabricated by a simple scribing technique using a diamond-tipped scribe and a template. These bridges have been made from 1.4 mm to 4 mm width on the 12 mm width tape, which decrease I c linearly with width. Measurements before and after the heat treatment for strain gauge glue curing at 170 °C for 120 min have been made and confirm there is no systematic decrease in J c.

This study aims to evaluate and measure the performance of Tukang.com comprehensively. The methods used in this paper were the Business Model Canvas (BMC) and Balanced Scorecard (BSC). The BSC method not only measures performance based on financial perspectives but also measures performance based on non-financial perspectives. Analysis of balanced scorecard Tukang.com produces initiatives from four perspectives namely financial perspective, customer perspective, internal business process perspective and growth, and learning perspective. Furthermore, the weighting of the Eckenrode method was carried out to weigh the strategic objectives that Tukang.com should prioritize for the development of its company. The improved business model of Tukang.com is the result of the three methods that have previously been conducted and have directly affected the nine business elements in the canvas model.

The LOFAR radio telescope is able to measure the radio emission from cosmic ray induced air showers with hundreds of individual antennas. This allows for precision testing of the emission mechanisms for the radio signal as well as determination of the depth of shower maximum $X_{\max}$, the shower observable most sensitive to the mass of the primary cosmic ray, to better than 20 g/cm$^2$. With a densely instrumented circular area of roughly 320 m$^2$, LOFAR is targeting for cosmic ray astrophysics in the energy range $10^{16}$ - $10^{18}$ eV. PV integrated shading devices (PVSDs) are an interesting case study for an optimisation problem as their design is non-trivial and they must balance competing parameters and uses of solar energy. In this study, the case of a south-facing, exterior louvre blade PVSD was used to investigate how multi-objective optimisation (MOO) coupled to a parametric design approach can be used as a support tool to improve the performance of the system in four different cases. The parameters optimized were the individual tilt angle of each louvre-blade (0, 15, 30 or 45 ° from the horizontal), the vertical distribution of the blades, and the type of material on the upper surface of each louvre (reflective coating or PV cells). The objectives of the optimisation were to minimise the total annual net energy electricity use and to maximise the daylighting level in the zone. The results of the investigation showed that PVSD configurations with higher louvre counts performed better as hybrid systems as they allowed to increase daylighting compared to classic, fully PV coated systems and did not increase energy use in the zone significantly. However, for systems with lower counts of louvres, the results of the optimisation showed that the surface of the louvres was more useful as a PV element, as reflective materials had little effect on the daylighting in the zone and the reduction in energy converted noticeably affected the energy performance of the building. This study aims to determine the effect of some concentration of Lusi mud (Sidoarjo mud) as a medium to grow mangrove plants on the growth of Rhizophora apiculuta seedlings. A total of 24 experimental units arranged in a randomized block design with treatment were Lusi mud concentration on planting medium, ie: 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. The variables observed were plant height, stem diameter, long root leaf area and wet weight and dry weight of plant. The study aims to explore the vegetation stucture and the dominance of cover plant type on Sidoarjo muddy farming field, East Java. This research is descriptive through vegetation analysis with line inert method to obtain Important Value Index (IVI). Result show that vegetation structure of 11 types of ground cover plants on mud-affected land was dominated by Panicumsp, Panicum maximum, and Arthraxonsp with 29.60, 17.70, and 16.84 of IVI respectively. Then, they are following by species that have lower IVI such as: Cynodondactylon (Linn.) Prest, Spigelia anthelmia L., Mimosa pudica, Cyperus rotundus, Imperata cylindrica, D. aegyptium (Linn.) P. Beauv. Desmidium sp, and A. villosa Willd.

Machine learning has been applied to several problems in particle physics research, beginning with applications to high-level physics analysis in the 1990s and 2000s, followed by an explosion of applications in particle and event identification and reconstruction in the 2010s. In this document we discuss promising future research and development areas for machine learning in particle physics. We detail a roadmap for their implementation, software and hardware resource requirements, collaborative initiatives with the data science community, academia and industry, and training the particle physics community in data science. The main objective of the document is to connect and motivate these areas of research and development with the physics drivers of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider and future neutrino experiments and identify the resource needs for their implementation. Measuring on offshore wind turbines is a challenging and cost intensive work especially when aiming for poorly accessible parts of the structure. While it is desirable to replace these measurements by indirect methods uncertainty exists about the necessary assumptions in environmental properties (e.g. soil conditions) and the structural dynamics. This paper presents preliminary results of a measurement campaign of subsoil strains on three operating offshore wind turbines located in the Belgian North Sea. The measurement data enables to check design assumptions e.g. concerns are raised about geometric constraints of the original design. Furthermore the dynamic behavior of the structure is analyzed in order to identify main fatigue contributions. Sensor data revealed a high impact of wave load for welds low on the monopile as well as notable contribution of the second order mode on fatigue damage below the mudline.

This study examines the application of the Hidden Markov model (HMM) to the soil classification based on Cone Penetration Test (CPT) measurements. The HMM is formulated in the Bayesian framework and composed of a Markov chain prior and a Gaussian likelihood model. The application of the Bayesian framework is considered as suitable because it allows for the integration of different sources of information commonly available in a CPT-based soil classification. The occurrence of different soil classes along a CPT profile is modeled with the Markov chain, while the Gaussian likelihood model establishes a relation between the different soil classes and CPT measurements. Preliminary performance of the HMM is examined on the classification of CPT measurements from the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm. Metal-Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition is a very complex technology that requires further investigation and optimization. We propose to apply microreactors to (1) replace multiple expensive time-consuming macroscale experiments by just one microreactor deposition with many points on one substrate; (2) to derive chemical reaction rates from individual deposition profiles using theoretical analytical solution. In this paper we also present the analytical solution of a simplified equation describing the deposition rate dependency on temperature. It allows to solve an inverse problem and to obtain detailed information about chemical reaction mechanism of MOCVD process.

The ATLAS experiment at the LHC is recording data from proton-proton collisions with 13 TeV center-of-mass energy since spring 2015. The collaboration is using a fast physics monitoring framework (TADA) to automatically perform a broad range of fast searches for early signs of new physics and to monitor the data quality across the year with the full analysis level calibrations applied to the rapidly growing data.TADA is designed to provide fast feedback directly after the collected data has been fully calibrated and processed at the Tier-0, the CERN Data Center. The system can monitor a large range of physics channels, offline data quality and physics performance quantities nearly final analysis level object calibrations. TADA output is available on a website accessible by the whole collaboration that gets updated twice a day with the data from newly processed runs. Hints of potentially interesting physics signals or performance issues identified in this way are reported to be followed up by physics or combined performance groups.The note reports as well about the technical aspects of TADA: the software structure to obtain the input TAG files, the framework workflow and structure, the webpage and its implementation.

The 2020 upgrade of the LHCb detector will vastly increase the rate of collisions the Online system needs to process in software, in order to filter events in real time. 30 million collisions per second will pass through a selection chain, where each step is executed conditional to its prior acceptance. The Kalman Filter is a fit applied to all reconstructed tracks which, due to its time characteristics and early execution in the selection chain, consumes 40% of the whole reconstruction time in the current trigger software. This makes the Kalman Filter a time-critical component as the LHCb trigger evolves into a full software trigger in the Upgrade. I present a new Kalman Filter algorithm for LHCb that can efficiently make use of any kind of SIMD processor, and its design is explained in depth. Performance benchmarks are compared between a variety of hardware architectures, including x8664 and Power8, and the Intel Xeon Phi accelerator, and the suitability of said architectures to efficiently perform the LHCb Reconstruction process is determined.

Particularly offshore there is a trend to cluster wind turbines in large wind farms, and in the near future to operate such a farm as an integrated power production plant. Predictability of individual turbine behavior across the entire fleet is key in such a strategy. Failure of turbine subcomponents should be detected well in advance to allow early planning of all necessary maintenance actions; Such that they can be performed during low wind and low electricity demand periods. In order to obtain the insights to predict component failure, it is necessary to have an integrated clean dataset spanning all turbines of the fleet for a sufficiently long period of time. This paper illustrates our big-data approach to do this. In addition, advanced failure detection algorithms are necessary to detect failures in this dataset. This paper discusses a multi-level monitoring approach that consists of a combination of machine learning and advanced physics based signal-processing techniques. The advantage of combining different data sources to detect system degradation is in the higher certainty due to multivariable criteria. In order to able to perform long-term acceleration data signal processing at high frequency a streaming processing approach is necessary. This allows the data to be analysed as the sensors generate it. This paper illustrates this streaming concept on 5kHz acceleration data. A continuous spectrogram is generated from the data-stream. Real-life offshore wind turbine data is used. Using this streaming approach for calculating bearing failure features on continuous acceleration data will support failure propagation detection.

The mechanical and tribological performance of red clay ceramic tiles uncoated and coated by oxy-fuel thermal spraying process from fly ash powders was evaluated. The ceramic tile substrates were manufactured by uniaxial pressing at 26.17 bar pressure, and sintered at 1100 °C. The coating thickness was determined based on the number of projection-cycles oxyacetylene flame over substrate. Coal fly ash coatings were deposited, with average thickness of 56.18±12.18 μm, 180.42±20.32 μm, and 258.26±25.88μm. The mechanical resistance to bending and wear by abrasion deep, were studied using ISO 10545-4 standards and ISO 10545-6 respectively; adhesion was measured using Elcometer equipment Type III according to ASTM D-4541-02 and the average roughness (Ra) was found according to ASTM standard D7127-13, using the profilometer Mitutoyo SJ 201. The surface morphology presented the heterogeneous molten or semi molten splats with average size of 35.262±3.48 micrometers with good adhesion, justifying increased mechanical resistance to bending by 5%, as well as wear by abrasion deep. These results contribute to the development of ceramic products with added value, to be used in various technological applications.

Quantum Dot Lasers (QDLs) are promising sources of light because of their favorable properties compared to other light sources. Emission in QDLs can access transitions in ground state (GS) and excited state (ES). Lasing due to the ES extends the spectral range and enables the laser to generate high output powers. Thus, lasing action due to the ES or to the dual lasing regime (GS and ES simultaneously) is expected to increase the applicability of QDLs in many future applications. We present a partially microscopic rate equation model that takes into account lasing action due to both the GS and the ES and distinguishes between both types of carriers (electrons and holes). Also, we present all possible steady-state solutions and we apply a stability analysis to the solutions to determine all stable lasing regimes (lasing due to the GS, lasing due to the ES and the dual lasing regime) to highlight the role of ES transitions. Specifically, we address the appearance of lasing due to the ES to the larger population of the ES and hence to the larger gain in higher injected current regimes.

A detailed phase-resolved spectroscopy of archival XMM-Newton observations of X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars (XDINSs) led to the discovery of narrow and strongly phase-dependent absorption features in two of these sources. The first was discovered in the X-ray spectrum of RX J0720.4-3125, followed by a new possible candidate in RX J1308.6+2127. Both spectral lines have similar properties: they are detected for only ∼ 20% of the rotational cycle and appear to be stable over the timespan covered by the observations. We performed Monte Carlo simulations to test the significance of these phase-variable features and in both cases the outcome has confirmed the detection with a confidence level > 4.6σ. Because of the narrow width and the strong dependence on the pulsar rotational phase, the most likely interpretation for these spectral features is in terms of resonant proton cyclotron absorption scattering in a confined high-B structure close to the stellar surface. Within the framework of this interpretation, our results provide evidence for deviations from a pure dipole magnetic field on small scales for highly magnetized neutron stars and support the proposed scenario of XDINSs being aged magnetars, with a strong non-dipolar crustal B-field component.

We are performing scaled astrophysics experiments on Omega and on NIF. Laser driven counter-streaming interpenetrating supersonic plasma flows can be studied to understand astrophysical electromagnetic plasma phenomena in a controlled laboratory setting. In our Omega experiments, the counter-streaming flow plasma state is measured using Thomson scattering diagnostics, demonstrating the plasma flows are indeed super-sonic and in the collisionless regime. We observe a surprising additional electron and ion heating from ion drag force in the double flow experiments that are attributed to the ion drag force and electrostatic instabilities. [1] A proton probe is used to image the electric and magnetic fields. We observe unexpected large, stable and reproducible electromagnetic field structures that arise in the counter-streaming flows [2]. The Biermann battery magnetic field generated near the target plane, advected along the flows, and recompressed near the midplane explains the cause of such self-organizing field structures [3]. A D3He implosion proton probe image showed very clear filamentary structures; three-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations and simulated proton radiography images indicate that these filamentary structures are generated by Weibel instabilities and that the magnetization level (ratio of magnetic energy over kinetic energy in the system) is ∼0.01 [4]. These findings have very high astrophysical relevance and significant implications. We expect to observe true collisionless shock formation when we use >100 kJ laser energy on NIF.

A review is given of the current status of searches for dark matter at accelerators. Particular emphasis is put on generic searches for direct production of dark matter at the LHC during its first run, and on the recent developments for the interpretation of the results, where the models using an effective field theory approach are now being complemented with more generic interpretations in the context of simplified models. Furthermore, results are reported briefly for searches for dark matter at the LHC in the context of supersymmetry, as well as for non-LHC accelerator searches.

The dark matter in the galaxy cluster Abell 1689 is modelled as an isothermal sphere of neutrinos. New data on the $2d$ mass density allow an accurate description of its core and halo. The model has no "missing baryon problem" and beyond $2.1$ Mpc the baryons have the cosmic mass abundance. Combination of cluster data with the cosmic dark matter fraction -- here supposed to stem from the neutrinos -- leads to a solution of the dark matter riddle by left and right handed neutrinos with mass 1.847 +/- 0.016 eV. The thus far observed absence of neutrinoless double beta decay points to (quasi-) Dirac neutrinos: uncharged electrons with different flavour and mass eigenbasis, as for quarks. Though the cosmic microwave background spectrum is matched up to some 10\% accuracy only, the case is not ruled out because the plasma phase of the early Universe may be turbulent., Comment: Minor correction for final mass estimate. 12 pages latex, 6 figures

Current interferometric gravitational wave detectors use the combination of quasi-monochromatic, continuous-wave laser light at 1064 nm and fused silica test masses at room temperature. Detectors of the third generation, such as the Einstein-Telescope, will involve a considerable sensitivity increase. The combination of 1550 nm laser radiation and crystalline silicon test masses at low temperatures might be important ingredients in order to achieve the sensitivity goal. Here we compare some properties of the fused silica and silicon test mass materials relevant for decreasing the thermal noise in future detectors as well as the recent technology achievements in the preparation of laser radiation at 1064 nm and 1550 nm relevant for decreasing the quantum noise. We conclude that silicon test masses and 1550 nm laser light have the potential to form the future building blocks of gravitational wave detection. DFG/EXC/QUEST DFG/SFB/TR7 EC/FP7/2007-2013

The research of mechanical properties of poro-visco-elastic biomaterials is an important task, especially for tailoring the best conditions for in-growth and healing of implants. In this work we analysed the behaviour of biomaterials under different static and dynamic loading regimes, in «dry» and «wet» conditions. Retrieved data revealed nonlinear relations between applied force and resulting deformation, with time and frequency dependence. These features were described by a nonlinear model, which reasonably fits mentioned peculiarities. The simplified model was validated with numerical simulations using COMSOL software. Upon validation it allows incorporation of the experimental data obtained by biomechanical spectroscopy towards prediction of biomaterials behaviour in «in vitro» conditions, with the purpose to extrapolate to clinically-relevant environment.

We have used molecular dynamics methods to study collisions between atoms and molecules or molecular clusters. We find that these collisions may yield highly reactive molecular fragments and efficient intracluster covalent bond-forming reactions in the cluster. There is a good agreement between our simulations and various experimental results.

N-acetyl glycine and N-methyl glycine molecules in the gas phase are ionized by electron exchange with slow O6+ ions at an energy of 48 keV. After ionization, the methyl and acetyl substituted glycines dissociate into fragments analogous to that resulting from ionization and fragmentation of amino acids and peptides, respectively. N-acetylglycine which contains a peptide bond also effectively tautomerizes to the diol form. Such tautomerization is typical for amino acids, however, we show that the tautomerization mechanism of the N-acetylglycine is different.

A new time and position sensitive detector is described, which combines an MCP stack with a phosphor screen, a CMOS camera and a waveform digitizer. Particle identification relies on the correlation between brightness of phosphor screen spots and amplitude of electrical signals (COBRA).

The monitoring of the condition of the offshore wind turbine during its operational states offers the possibility of performing accurate assessments of the remaining life-time as well as supporting maintenance decisions during its entire life. The efficacy of structural monitoring in the case of the offshore wind turbine, though, is undermined by the practical limitations connected to the measurement system in terms of cost, weight and feasibility of sensor mounting (e.g. at muddline level 30m below the water level). This limitation is overcome by reconstructing the full-field response of the structure based on the limited number of measured accelerations and a calibrated Finite Element Model of the system. A modal decomposition and expansion approach is used for reconstructing the responses at all degrees of freedom of the finite element model. The paper will demonstrate the possibility to predict dynamic strains from acceleration measurements based on the aforementioned methodology. These virtual dynamic strains will then be evaluated and validated based on actual strain measurements obtained from a monitoring campaign on an offshore Vestas V90 3 MW wind turbine on a monopile foundation.

Instabilities of equilibrium quantum mechanics are common and well-understood. They are manifested for example in phase transitions, where a quantum system becomes so sensitive to perturbations that a symmetry can be spontaneously broken. Here, we consider the possibility that the time evolution governing quantum dynamics may be similarly subject to an instability, at which its unitarity spontaneously breaks down owing to an extreme sensitivity towards perturbations. We find that indeed such an instability exists, and we explore its immediate consequences. Interpretations of the results both in terms of extreme sensitivity to the influence of environmental degrees of freedom, and in terms of a possible fundamental violation of unitarity are discussed., 11 pages, 2 figures; Conference proceedings DICE 2014

We present a theoretical study of excited clusters of β-alanine molecules in the gas phase: (β-ala)n, n=2-5. Classical molecular dynamics simulations performed for different internal excitation energies showed a thermal decomposition dependence with the cluster size. We also present an assessment study performed with different families of density functionals using the dimer, (β-ala)2 as a benchmark system. M06-2X provides the best agreement for the relative energies of 20 isomers in comparison with the reference values computed with the MP2 method. The stability and reactivity of several cluster sizes have been investigated with this functional in combination with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set.

Human bone tissue is characterized as a material with high brittleness. Due to this nature, visible signs of cracking are not easy to be detected before final failure. The main objective of this work is to investigate if the acoustic emission (AE) technique can offer valuable insight to the fracture process of human femur specimens as in other engineering materials characterization. This study describes the AE activity during fracture of whole femur bones under flexural load. Before fracture, broadband AE sensors were used in order to measure parameters like wave velocity dispersion and attenuation. Waveform parameters like the duration, rise time and average frequency, were also examined relatively to the propagation distance as a preparation for the AE monitoring during fracture. After the ultrasonic study, the samples were partly cast in concrete and fixed as cantilevers. A point load was applied on the femur head, which due to the test geometry resulted in a combination of two different patterns of fracture, bending and torsion. Two AE broadband sensors were placed in different points of the sample, one near the fixing end and the other near the femur head. Preliminary analysis shows that parameters like the number of acquired AE signals and their amplitude are well correlated with the load history. Furthermore, the parameters of rise time and frequency can differentiate the two fracture patterns. Additionally, AE allows the detection of the load at the onset of fracture from the micro-cracking events that occur at the early loading stages, allowing monitoring of the whole fracture process. Parameters that have been used extensively for monitoring and characterization of fracture modes of engineering materials seem to poses characterization power in the case of bone tissue monitoring as well.

We perform a systematic study on the behaviour of energy positions and autoionization widths of metastable resonance states in the Hydrogen molecule subject to screened Coulomb interactions among all particles using an ab initio Feshbach configuration interaction method. We only focus on the Q1 series of doubly excited states lying between the first H2 +(1sσg) and the second H2 +(2pσu) ionization thresholds, for several spectroscopic molecular symmetries 1,3Σg u, 1,3Πg, u and 1,3Δg, u. Special attention is given to the efficient and accurate method for the evaluation of screened Coulomb two-electron integrals in molecules when using configurations in terms of molecular orbitals described using a B-spline basis

We present an analytical model that characterizes two-photon transitions in the presence of autoionising states. We applied this model to interpret resonant RABITT spectra, and show that, as a harmonic traverses a resonance, the phase of the sideband beating significantly varies with photon energy. This phase variation is generally very different from the $\pi$ jump observed in previous works, in which the direct path contribution was negligible. The real-time structural damage detection on large slender structures has one of its main application on offshore Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWT). The renewable energy market is continuously pushing the wind turbine sizes and performances. This is the reason why nowadays offshore wind turbines concepts are going toward a 10 MW reference wind turbine model. The aim of the work is to perform operational analyses on the 10-MW reference wind turbine finite element model using an aeroelastic code in order to obtain long-time-low- cost simulations. The aeroelastic code allows simulating the damages in several ways: by reducing the edgewise/flapwise blades stiffness, by adding lumped masses or considering a progressive mass addiction (i.e. ice on the blades). The damage detection is then performed by means of Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) techniques. Virtual accelerometers are placed in order to simulate real measurements and to estimate the modal parameters. The feasibility of a robust damage detection on the model has been performed on the HAWT model in parked conditions. The situation is much more complicated in case of operating wind turbines because the time periodicity of the structure need to be taken into account. Several algorithms have been implemented and tested in the simulation environment. They are needed in order to carry on a damage detection simulation campaign and develop a feasible real-time damage detection method. The effect of particle reduction to nanoscale size and substitution of Mn3+ ions for Fe3+ ions on the crystal structure, lattice dynamics, Mossbauer spectra and magnetic properties in NdFe(1-x)MnxO(3) compounds have been studied. X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the Jahn-Teller distortion of lattice dominates for samples with x GT 0.4. The average particle size of NdFeO3 nanoparticles (NAP) increases with annealing at 600 degrees C from about 15 nm to 25 nm. The presence of superparamagnetic particles was indicated by Mossbauer measurements in NdFeO3 NAP system. Sextets in NdFe(1-x)MnxO(3) Mssbauer spectra can be modelled with several local environments of Fe3+ induced by substitution. The reduction of dimensionality and the substitution induce a decrease of the Neel temperature T-Nl from 691 K to 544 K for NAP or to 356 K for x = 0.4, however the temperature of spin reorientation T-SR increases with substitution. The saturated magnetization obtained at 1.9 K increases and ferromagnetic component is removed below T-SR with the substitution. Multiband solar cells are one type of third generation photovoltaic devices in which an increase of the power conversion efficiency is achieved through the absorption of low energy photons while preserving a large band gap that determines the open circuit voltage. The ability to absorb photons from different parts of the solar spectrum originates from the presence of an intermediate energy band located within the band gap of the material. This intermediate band, acting as a stepping stone allows the absorption of low energy photons to transfer electrons from the valence band to the conduction band by a sequential two photons absorption process. It has been demonstrated that highly mismatched alloys offer a potential to be used as a model material system for practical realization of multiband solar cells. Dilute nitride GaAs1-xNx highly mismatched alloy with low mole fraction of N is a prototypical multiband semiconductor with a well-defined intermediate band. Currently, we are using chemical beam epitaxy to synthesize dilute nitride highly mismatched alloys. The materials are characterized by a variety of structural and optical methods to optimize their properties for multiband photovoltaic devices, N. We wish to understand the processes underlying the ionization dynamics of N2 as experimentally induced and studied by recording the kinetic energy release (KER) in a XUV-pump/IR-probe setup. To this end a theoretical model was developed describing the ionization process using Dyson Orbitals and, subsequently, the dissociation process using a large set of diabatic potential energy surfaces (PES) on which to propagate. So far, most of the high resolution scanning probe microscopy studies of organic molecules were restricted to metallic substrates. Insulating substrates are mandatory when the molecules need to be electrically decoupled in a electronic circuit. In such a case, atomic force microscopy is required. In this paper we will discuss our recent studies on different organic molecules deposited on KBr surfaces in ultra-high vacuum, and then imaged by AFM at room temperature. The distance between tip and surface was controlled either by the frequency-shift of the cantilever resonance or by the excitation signal required to keep the oscillation amplitude constant. Advantages and drawbacks of both techniques are discussed. The high mobility of the molecules, due to their weak interaction with the substrate, hinders the formation of regular self assembled structures. To overcome this problem we created artificial structures on the surface by annealing and by electron irradiation, which made possible the growth of the molecules onto step edges and their confinement into rectangular pits.

In certain plasmas, non-thermal electron distributions can produce instabilities. These instabilities may be useful or potentially disruptive. Therefore the study of these instabilities is of importance in a variety of fields including fusion science and astrophysics. Following on from previous work conducted at the University of Strathclyde on the cyclotron resonance maser instability that was relevant to astrophysical radiowave generation, further instabilities are being investigated. Particular instabilities of interest are the anomalous Doppler instability which can occur in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas and the two-stream instability that is of importance in fast-ignition inertial confinement fusion. To this end, computational simulations have been undertaken to investigate the behaviour of both the anomalous Doppler and two-stream instabilities with the goal of designing an experiment to observe these behaviours in a laboratory. Efficient (similar to 1%) electron cyclotron radio emissions are known to originate in the X mode from regions of locally depleted plasma in the Earths polar magnetosphere. These emissions are commonly referred to as the Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR). AKR occurs naturally in these polar regions where electrons are accelerated by electric fields into the increasing planetary magnetic dipole. Here conservation of the magnetic moment converts axial to rotational momentum forming a horseshoe distribution in velocity phase space. This distribution is unstable to cyclotron emission with radiation emitted in the X-mode. Initial studies were conducted in the form of 2D PiC code simulations [1] and a scaled laboratory experiment that was constructed to reproduce the mechanism of AKR. As studies progressed, 3D PiC code simulations were conducted to enable complete investigation of the complex interaction dimensions. A maximum efficiency of 1.25% is predicted from these simulations in the same mode and frequency as measured in the experiment. This is also consistent with geophysical observations and the predictions of theory. Publisher PDF
