The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitter established by observations with ground-based gamma-ray detectors. Here we report the long-term monitoring of M87 from 2021 to 2024 with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). M87 has been detected by LHAASO with a statistical significance ∼ 9 σ . The observed energy spectrum extends to 20 TeV, with a possible hardening at ∼20 TeV and then a clear softening at higher energies. Assuming that the intrinsic spectrum is described by a single power law up to 20 TeV, a tight upper bound on the extragalactic background light intensity is obtained. A strong VHE flare lasting 8 days, with a rise time of ${\tau }_{r}^{\mathrm{rise}}=1.05\pm 0.49$ days and decay time of ${\tau }_{d}^{\mathrm{decay}}=2.17\pm 0.58$ days, was found in early 2022. A possible GeV flare is seen also in Fermi Large Area Telescope data during the VHE flare period. The variability time as short as 1 day seen in the LHAASO data suggests a compact emission region with a size of ∼3 × 10 ^15 δ cm ( δ being the Doppler factor of the emitting region), corresponding to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central supermassive black hole in M87. The continuous monitoring of the source reveals a duty cycle of ∼1% for VHE flares with a flux above 10 ^−11 erg cm ^−2 s ^−1 .

The first source catalog of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the detection of a very high energy gamma-ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. This Letter presents a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this pointlike source. The best-fit position of the TeV source (R.A. = 185.°05 ± 0.°04, decl. = 29.°25 ± 0.°03) is compatible with NGC 4278 within ∼0.°03. Variation analysis shows an indication of variability on a timescale of a few months in the TeV band, which is consistent with low-frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV γ -ray emissions from this low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The observation by LHAASO's Water Cherenkov Detector Array during the active period has a significance level of 8.8 σ with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.56 ± 0.14 and a flux f _1–10 TeV = (7.0 ± 1.1 _sta ± 0.35 _syst ) × 10 ^−13 photons cm ^−2 s ^−1 , or approximately 5% of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from NGC 4278 indicates that compact, weak radio jets can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons.

Ultrarelativistic jets are believed to play an important role in producing prompt emission and afterglow of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), but the nature of the jet is poorly known owing to the lack of decisive features observed in the prompt emission. The discovery of an emission line evolving from about 37 to 6 MeV in the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A provides an unprecedented opportunity to probe GRB jet physics. The time evolution of the central energy of the line with power-law index −1 is naturally explained by the high-latitude curvature effect. Under the assumption that the line emission is generated in the prompt emission by e ^± pair production, cooling, and annihilation in the jet, we can strictly constrain jet physics with observed line emission properties. We find that the radius of the emission region is r ≳ 10 ^16 cm. The narrow line width of ∼10% requires that the line emission occurs within 10% of the dynamical time, which further implies short timescales of pair cooling to the nonrelativistic state and pair annihilation, as well as a slightly clumpy emission region. If the jet’s Lorentz factor is Γ ≳ 400, the fast cooling requirement needs an energy density of magnetic field in the jet much larger than that of prompt gamma rays, i.e., a magnetically dominated jet. The temporal behavior of line flux suggests some angle dependence of line emission. We also discuss the difficulties of other scenarios for the observed emission line.

The systematic properties are largely unknown for the black hole X-ray binary Swift J151857.0–572147 newly discovered in the 2024 outburst. The nature of a black hole can be completely defined by specifying the mass and dimensionless spin parameter. Therefore, accurate measurement of the two fundamental parameters is important for understanding the nature of black holes. The joint spectral fitting of a reflection component with simultaneous observations from Insight-HXMT, NICER, and NuSTAR reveals for the first time a black hole dimensionless spin of ${0.84}_{-0.26}^{+0.17}$ and an inclination angle of ${21.1}_{-3.6}^{+4.5}$ degrees for this system. Monitoring of the soft state by NICER results in disk flux and temperature following ${F}_{\mathrm{disk}}\propto {T}_{\mathrm{in}}^{3.83\pm 0.17}$ . For the standard thin disk, ${L}_{\mathrm{disk}}\approx 4\pi {R}_{\mathrm{in}}^{2}\sigma {T}_{\mathrm{in}}^{4}$ , so the relationship between the flux and temperature of the disk we measured indicates that the inner radius of the disk is stable and the disk is in the innermost stable circular orbit. With an empirical relation built previously between the black hole outburst profile and the intrinsic power output, the source distance is estimated as 5.8 ± 2.5 kpc according to the outburst profile and peak flux observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER. Finally, a black hole mass of 3.67 ± 1.79–8.07 ± 4.20 M _⊙ can be inferred from a joint diagnostic of the aforementioned parameters measured for this system. This system is also consistent with most black hole X-ray binaries with high spin and a mass in the range of 5–20 M _⊙ .

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to launch relativistic jets, which generate prompt emission by internal processes, and produce long-lasting afterglows by driving external shocks into the surrounding medium. However, how the jet powers the external shock is poorly known. The unprecedented observations of the keV–MeV emission with Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor and the TeV emission with LHAASO of the brightest-of-all-time GRB 221009A offer a great opportunity to study the prompt-to-afterglow transition and the impact of jet on the early dynamics of external shock. In this Letter, we find that the cumulative light curve of keV–MeV emission could well fit the rising stage of the TeV light curve of GRB 221009A, with a time delay, ${4.45}_{-0.26}^{+0.26}$ s, of TeV emission. Moreover, both the rapid increase in the initial stage and the excess from about T _ref + 260 s to 270 s in the TeV light curve are tracking the light-curve bumps in the prompt keV–MeV emission. The close relation between the keV–MeV and TeV emission reveals the continuous energy injection into the external shock. Assuming an energy injection rate exactly following the keV–MeV flux of GRB 221009A, including the very early precursor, we build a continuous energy injection model where the jet Lorentz factor is derived from the TeV time delay, and the TeV data are well fitted, with the TeV excesses interpreted by inverse-Compton scatterings of the inner-coming prompt emission by the energetic electrons in external shock.

We study the spectral and temporal properties of the black hole (BH) X-ray transient binary SLX 1746–331 during the 2023 outburst with NICER, NuSTAR, and Insight-HXMT observations. Through the joint fitting of the spectra from NICER, NuSTAR, and Insight-HXMT, the spin and inclination angles are measured for the first time as 0.85 ± 0.03 and 53° ± 0.°5, respectively. Accordingly, the mass of the compact star is updated from the previous lower limit of 3.3 ± 2.1 M _⊙ to 5.5 ± 3.6 M _⊙ , which is consistent with 5.2 ± 4.5 M _⊙ measured with an empirical mass–luminosity correlation of BH samples. With more NICER observations covering the later decay of the outburst, we confirm that the entire outburst was dominated by the disk emissions, and the thermal spectrum follows $F\propto {T}_{\mathrm{in}}^{3.974\pm 0.003}$ , until a luminosity of over 2 magnitudes lower than the maximum of the outburst.

Swift J1727.8–1613 is a black hole X-ray binary newly discovered in 2023. We perform spectral analysis with simultaneous Insight-HXMT, NICER, and NuSTAR observations when the source was approaching the hard intermediate state. Such a joint view reveals an additional hard component apart from the normally observed hard component with reflection in the spectrum, to be distinguished from the usual black hole X-ray binary systems. By including this extra component in the spectrum, we have measured a high spin of ${0.98}_{-0.07}^{+0.02}$ and an inclination of around ${40}_{-0.8}^{+1.2}$ °, which is consistent with NICER results reported before. However, we find that the additional spectral component cannot be exclusively determined due to the model degeneracy. Accordingly, a possible jet/corona configuration is adjusted to account for the spectral fitting with different model trials. The extra component may originate either from a relativistic jet or a jet base/corona underneath a slow jet.

We study the spectral properties of the black hole X-ray transient binary 4U 1630–472 during its 2022 and 2023 outbursts with Insight-HXMT observations. We find that the outbursts are in peculiar soft states. The effect of the hardening factor on the disk temperature is taken into account by the kerrbb model, and the flux and temperature of the disk are found to follow $F\propto {T}_{\mathrm{eff}}^{3.92\pm 0.13}$ and $F\propto {T}_{\mathrm{eff}}^{4.91\pm 1.00}$ for the two outbursts, respectively. The flux–temperature relation is roughly consistent with a standard disk. By fitting with a p -free model, the p -value, the exponent of the radial dependence of the disk temperature, is found to have an anticorrelation with disk temperature. Combining a joint diagnostic analysis with a diagram of the relation between the nonthermal fraction and luminosity, we find a possible scenario that the disk evolves from 2022 to 2023 toward a slim one with a decreasing radiation efficiency, where such an evolution may depend on the fraction of the nonthermal emission in the high soft state.

IGR J17091–3624, in addition to GRS 1915 + 105, is the only black hole X-ray binary that displays “heartbeat”-like variability, characterized by structured flares with high amplitudes. In this study, we conduct a detailed phase-resolved analysis of the recently identified “heartbeat”-like Class X variability in IGR J17091–3624 during its 2022 outburst, utilizing data from NICER and NuSTAR observations. A shortage in the high-energy (>20 keV) X-ray flux is detected at peak phases of the soft-X-ray flare at a ∼15 σ confidence level from the phase-folded light curves. Furthermore, our phase-resolved spectral analysis reveals variations in the spectral shape, particularly showing significant synchronous variations in the disk temperature and flux with the count rate. These findings imply that the flare is primarily driven by instabilities within the accretion disk, consistent with previous studies of the well-known Class ρ variability in GRS 1915+105. However, we also observe a positive correlation between the disk temperature and flux over the flare cycle, which differs from the loop relation between the two parameters found in the Class ρ variability. This could suggest differences in the underlying physical processes between the two variability classes. Variations in the Comptonization component during flares are also observed: the electron temperature and covering fraction show anticorrelations with the disk flux, revealing potential interactions between the accretion disk and the corona during these flares.

Low-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly observed in X-ray light curves of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs); however, their origin remains a topic of debate. In order to thoroughly investigate variations in spectral properties on the quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) timescale, we utilized the Hilbert–Huang transform technique to conduct phase-resolved spectroscopy across a broad energy band for LFQPOs in the newly discovered BHXRB Swift J1727.8–1613. This is achieved through quasi-simultaneous observations from Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer, Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, and Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope. Our analysis reveals that both the nonthermal and disk–blackbody components exhibit variations on the quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) timescale, with the former dominating the QPO variability. For the spectral parameters, we observe modulation of the disk temperature, spectral indices, and reflection fraction with the QPO phase with high statistical significance (≳5 σ ). Notably, the variation in the disk temperature is found to precede the variations in the nonthermal and disk fluxes by ∼0.4–0.5 QPO cycles. We suggest that these findings offer further evidence that the type-C QPO variability is a result of geometric effects of the accretion flow.

We present the first catalog of very-high-energy and ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory. The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array from 2021 March to 2022 September and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array from 2020 January to 2022 September. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering decl. from −20° to 80°. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than 2° and a significance of detection at >5 σ . Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ( E > 100 TeV) emission at >4 σ significance level. We provide the position, extension, and spectral characteristics of all the sources in this catalog.

We present a method to estimate the detection expectations of host galaxies of long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) in the grizJHKL bands. It is found that given the same limiting magnitude ${m}_{{grizJHKL},\mathrm{lim}}$ in each band, the z band produces the largest number of overall LGRB hosts and low-mass hosts ( M _* ≤ 10 ^8 M _⊙ ) at ${m}_{{grizJHKL},\mathrm{lim}}\gtrsim 26$ mag. For the detection of high-redshift LGRB hosts (redshift ≥5), it is recommended to prioritize the L band, due to its good performance at both low and high limiting magnitudes. We specifically estimate the expectation of LGRB host detection with ${m}_{{grizJHKL},\mathrm{lim}}=28$ mag, which the James Webb Space Telescope can partially attain. We find that there may exist 116, 259, 277, 439, 266, 294, 274, and 316 LGRB hosts, including 0.54, 31, 28, 143, 12, 20, 14, and 35 low-mass ones in the grizJHKL bands and 13, 14, 15, 14, and 15 high-redshift ones in the zJHKL bands, for 15 yr Swift LGRBs with S ≥ 10 ^−6 erg cm ^−2 . The results show that the study of LGRB hosts under next-generation observational conditions holds significant potential, especially for low-mass host studies. However, it appears that the deeper sensitivities of galaxy telescopes may not significantly enhance statistical studies of high-redshift hosts. Strategies aimed at increasing the number of distant LGRB hosts may require the expansion of high-redshift LGRB detections.

Diamond is a highly valuable material with diverse industrial applications, particularly in the fields of semiconductor, optics, and high-power electronics. However, its high hardness and chemical stability make it difficult to realize high-efficiency and ultra-low damage machining of diamond. To address these challenges, several polishing methods have been developed for both single crystal diamond (SCD) and polycrystalline diamond (PCD), including mechanical, chemical, laser, and ion beam processing methods. In this review, the characteristics and application scope of various polishing technologies for SCD and PCD are highlighted. Specifically, various energy beam-based direct and assisted polishing technologies, such as laser polishing, ion beam polishing, plasma-assisted polishing, and laser-assisted polishing, are summarized. The current research progress, material removal mechanism, and influencing factors of each polishing technology are analyzed. Although some of these methods can achieve high material removal rates or reduce surface roughness, no single method can meet all the requirements. Finally, the future development prospects and application directions of different polishing technologies are presented.

The outburst is characterized by spectral dominance of the soft state, where the joint Insight-HXMT and NICER spectral analysis shows the temperature dependence of the disk flux follows ${T}_{\mathrm{in}}^{3.98}$ , and thus suggests that the inner disk reaches its innermost stable circular orbit during almost the entire outburst. By assuming 0.3 L _Edd for the peak flux and an inclination angle of zero degrees, the lower limit of the compact object hosted in this system is estimated as 3.28 ± 2.14 M _⊙ . We also look into the relation between the disk temperature and disk flux for a sample of black hole systems, and by taking the disk temperature derived in the outburst of SLX 1746–331, such a relation results in a mass estimation of 5.2 ± 4.5 M _⊙ . Finally, the spin of the compact object is constrained to be larger than 0.8 with the spectral model KERRBB.

This study proposed a novel framework to identify critical water quality dynamics as early warning signals for diagnosing changes in the resilience of river basin ecosystems. We established empirical linkages between the theoretical background of three resilience capacities (robustness, adaptability and transformability) and water quality dynamics. Then, the processes of resilience degradation and their risk transfer or accumulation have been identified based on the shifts among different states. The methods of time-domain analysis and frequency-domain analysis were integrated into this framework, aiming to identify gradual and transient responses of water quality and its periodic fluctuation characteristics at multiple temporal scales. The time-domain analysis methods obtained the trend, cumulative periodic fluctuation of water quality by extracting the key characteristic parameters from the time-series data. The wavelet transform methods were introduced into the frequency-domain analysis to reveal the water quality fluctuation patterns at specific temporal scales. We tested the proposed framework in a typical agriculture-intensive watershed in eastern China. The results showed that this framework can be effectively used to identify three resilience states of river basin ecosystems. The degraded resilience regions were mainly distributed in the downstream area, which was influenced by their specific land use/cover and different agricultural soil health conditions. Particularly, urban sewage discharge was the main cause of periodic fluctuation in water quality time series at multiple high-frequency scales. The theoretical background of resilience capacities was elaborated in non-equilibrium dynamics before resilience degradation. Thus, this novel framework could reveal the pollution processes and driving mechanisms in different river reaches, and it also can provide adaptive management suggestions according to resilience dynamics traits.

A multifunctional porous nanohybrid was designed for supercapacitor and nanosensor for voltammetric detection of Chinese traditional herbal drug quercetin (Qu) extracted from lotus leaves using graphene-like tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheet onto a porous and conductive poly(3,4-ethoxylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). Conducting PEDOT with a rough, porous, irregular surface was synthesized by one-step electropolymerization of commercially available monomer in acetonitrile solution, then WS2/PEDOT was facilely obtained by drop-coating WS2 nanosheet dispersion onto the synthesized PEDOT. WS2/PEDOT porous nanohybrid displayed a high capacitance characteristic with specific capacitance of 70.64 F·g−1 at a current density of 0.2 A·g−1, good cycling stability with capacitance retention of 90.74% after 5000 cycles and excellent voltammetric responses for Qu in linear ranges from 1.5 × 10−7 to 1 × 10−4 mol l−1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 50 nM and sensitivity of 1.76 μA μm−1 cm−2 under the optimum operation conditions. The developed nanohybrid sensor was employed for the electrochemical detection of Qu in real sample with acceptable recoveries in comparison with high-performance liquid chromatography. This work will provide an experimental basis for nanosensing platform integrated with supercapacitor as self-powered electrochemical energy storage system in the near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
