1. Insights into Galaxy Morphology and Star Formation: Unveiling Filamentary Structures around an Extreme Overdensity at z ∼ 1.5 Traced by [O ii] Emitters

Abstract

We explore the morphological features and star formation activities of [O ii ] emitters in the COSMOS UltraDeep field at z ∼ 1.5 using JWST NIRCam data from the COSMOS-Web survey and Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. We also report the discovery of large filamentary structures traced by [O ii ] emitters surrounding an extremely overdense core with a galaxy number density ∼11× higher than the field average. These structures span over 50 cMpc, underscoring their large scale in the cosmic web at this epoch. After matching the stellar-mass distributions, the core galaxies show a higher frequency of disturbances (50% ± 9%) than those in the outskirts (41% ± 9%) and the field (21% ± 5%), indicative of more frequent mergers and interactions in the innermost ≲1.′5 region. Additionally, we observe that specific star formation rates are elevated in denser environments. A Kolmogorov–Smirnov test comparing the distribution of specific star formation rates of core and field galaxies yields a p -value of 0.02, suggesting an enhancement of star formation activity driven by the dense environment. Our findings underscore the environmental impact on galaxy evolution during a pivotal cosmic epoch and set the stage for further investigation with the increasing larger data from upcoming surveys.

Abstract

Marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) is gaining interest as a tool to meet global climate goals. Because the response of the ocean–atmosphere system to mCDR takes years to centuries, modeling is required to assess the impact of mCDR on atmospheric CO _2 reduction. Here, we use a coupled ocean–atmosphere model to quantify the atmospheric CO _2 reduction in response to a CDR perturbation. We define two metrics to characterize the atmospheric CO _2 response to both instantaneous ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and direct air capture (DAC): the cumulative additionality ( α ) measures the reduction in atmospheric CO _2 relative to the magnitude of the CDR perturbation, while the relative efficiency ( ϵ ) quantifies the cumulative additionality of mCDR relative to that of DAC. For DAC, α is 100% immediately following CDR deployment, but declines to roughly 50% by 100 years post-deployment as the ocean degasses CO _2 in response to the removal of carbon from the atmosphere. For instantaneous OAE, α is zero initially and reaches a maximum of 40%–90% several years to decades later, depending on regional CO _2 equilibration rates and ocean circulation processes. The global mean ϵ approaches 100% after 40 years, showing that instantaneous OAE is nearly as effective as DAC after several decades. However, there are significant geographic variations, with ϵ approaching 100% most rapidly in the low latitudes while ϵ stays well under 100% for decades to centuries near deep and intermediate water formation sites. These metrics provide a quantitative framework for evaluating sequestration timescales and carbon market valuation that can be applied to any mCDR strategy.

Abstract

High-quality epitaxial Mg _3 Sb _2 thin films are promising thermoelectric materials to enable practical applications of compact and environmentally friendly thermoelectric conversion at RT. In this study, high-quality single-crystal Mg _3 Sb _2 with high c-plane orientation was epitaxially grown directly on annealed c-Al _2 O _3 substrates without passive layers. These thin films exhibited about three times higher thermoelectric power factor than any previously reported values due to high carrier mobility. The ultra-smooth surface of the annealed c-Al _2 O _3 substrate facilitated the formation of high-quality Mg _3 Sb _2 thin films without passive layers or polycrystalline interfaces that could be carrier scatters.

We present a new approach for designing thermal shielding materials using two-dimensional oxide nanosheets. Our approach uses hetero-assembly design [(Ti _0.87 O _2 ) _m (Cs _2.7 W _11 O _35− _d ) _20 ( m = 0, 5, 10)] by overlaying high refractive index ( n ) Ti _0.87 O _2 nanosheets with transparent conducting Cs _2.7 W _11 O _35− _d nanosheets. Abstract

A single crystalline thin film of Ba _2 Ti _6 O _13 was grown on the (210) surface of a SrTiO _3 single-crystal substrate by pulsed laser deposition. Scanning transmission electron microscopy shows that the Ba _2 Ti _6 O _13 thin film grew epitaxially with the a -plane, and the b -/ c -axes of Ba _2 Ti _6 O _13 parallel to the (210) plane and the [00 $\bar{1}$ ]/[ $\bar{1}$ 20] directions of SrTiO _3 , respectively. The electrical conductance of the Ba _2 Ti _6 O _13 film was approximately one order larger than that of the reduced SrTiO _3− _δ single crystal with oxygen deficiency of roughly δ = 0.05. Electronic structure calculations predict that Ba _2 Ti _6 O _13 is an n-type degenerate semiconductor with spin-split states primarily of Ti 3d orbital.

Abstract

Deuterium fractionation in the closest vicinity of a protostar is important in understanding its potential heritage to a planetary system. Here, we have detected the spectral line emission of CH _3 OH and its three deuterated species, CH _2 DOH, CHD _2 OH, and CH _3 OD, toward the low-mass protostellar source B335 at a resolution of 0.″03 (5 au) with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. They have a ring distribution within the radius of 24 au with the intensity depression at the continuum peak. We derive the column densities and abundance ratios of the above species at six positions in the disk/envelope system as well as the continuum peak. The D/H ratio of CH _3 OH is ∼[0.03–0.13], which is derived by correcting the statistical weight of 3 for CH _2 DOH. The [CHD _2 OH]/[CH _2 DOH] ratio is derived to be higher ([0.14–0.29]). On the other hand, the [CH _2 DOH]/[CH _3 OD] ratio ([4.9–15]) is higher than the statistical ratio of 3 and is comparable to those reported for other low-mass sources. We study the physical structure on a few astronomical unit scales in B335 by analyzing the CH _3 OH (18 _3,15 − 18 _2,16 , A) and HCOOH (12 _0,12 − 11 _0,11 ) line emission. Velocity structures of these lines are reasonably explained as the infalling-rotating motion. Abstract

IRAS04368+2557 in L1527 is a Class 0/I protostar with a clear disk-envelope system revealed by previous Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. In this paper, we discuss the flared structure of this source with observed sulfur-bearing molecules included in the FAUST ALMA large program. The analyses of molecular distributions and kinematics have shown that CS, SO, and OCS trace different regions of the disk-envelope system. To evaluate the temperature across the disk, we derive rotation temperature with the two observed SO lines. Abstract

We report the spectroscopic characterization of a Kerr parametric oscillator (KPO) based on the measurement of its reflection coefficient under a two-photon drive induced by flux modulation. The measured reflection spectra show good agreement with numerical simulations in terms of their dependence on the two-photon drive amplitude. The spectra can be interpreted as changes in system’s eigenenergies, transition matrix elements, and the population of the eigenstates, although the linewidth of the resonance structure is not fully explained. We also show that the drive-amplitude dependence of the spectra can be explained analytically by using the concepts of Rabi splitting and the Stark shift. By comparing the experimentally obtained spectra with theory, we show that the two-photon drive amplitude at the device can be precisely determined, which is important for the application of KPOs in quantum information processing.

9. Plumes of Water Ice/Gas Mixtures Observed in the Lunar Polar Region

Abstract

The presence of water condensation in the lunar polar region has been reported. However, the origin and amount of water remain unknown, and information on the migration mechanism of water is key for understanding the delivery of water to the Earth–Moon system. We herein report the first identification of the migration process observed as localized and condensed plumes of water ice/gas mixtures ejected from the lunar surface to space in the polar region based on spectral data derived by SELENE/Kaguya. We identified water and other volatile absorption in 10,200 spectra at the nonpermanent shadowed region during the nighttime when no illumination reached the lunar surface, while nearly horizontal solar light at these regions could illuminate the sky. Ray-tracing analyses suggested that the majority of the observed volatile signal did not come from the lunar surface but from the sky (space). The majority of the identified plumes were observed at or near the hydrogen distribution reported previously. Volatile materials were repeatedly identified in some locations and most of the plume events did not coincide with the major meteoroid streams. Rather, more signals were identified during the winter season in each pole. The timing, duration, location, and temperature simulations all suggest that impact events cannot be their main origin, but rather the volatile sublimation from the subsurface (∼10 cm depth). Overall, it was revealed that the lunar polar region is active in terms of volatile migration, which is significant for understanding water delivery to the Earth–Moon system.

10. Synthetic Observations of the Infalling Rotating Envelope: Links between the Physical Structure and Observational Features

Abstract

We performed synthetic observations of the Ulrich, Cassen, and Moosman (UCM) model to understand the relation between the physical structures of the infalling envelope around a protostar and their observational features in molecular lines, adopting L1527 as an example. We also compared the physical structure and synthetic position–velocity ( P–V ) diagrams of the UCM model and a simple ballistic (SB) model. There are multiple ways to compare synthetic data with observational data. We first calculated the correlation coefficient. The UCM model and the SB model show similarly good correlation with the observational data. While the correlation reflects the overall similarity between the cube datasets, we can alternatively compare specific local features, such as the centrifugal barrier in the SB model or the centrifugal radius in the UCM model. We evaluated systematic uncertainties in these methods. In the case of L1527, the stellar mass values estimated using these methods are all lower than the value derived from previous Keplerian analysis of the disk. This may indicate that the gas infall motion in the envelope is retarded by, e.g., magnetic fields. We also showed analytically that, in the UCM model, the spin-up feature of the P–V diagram is due to the infall velocity rather than the rotation. The line-of-sight velocity V is thus ∝ x ^−0.5 , where x is the offset. If the infall is retarded, rotational velocity should dominate so that V is proportional to x ^−1 , as is often observed in the protostellar envelope.

Abstract

Understanding the rapid dynamics of the primary streamer is crucial for comprehending the nanosecond pulsed discharge process. To reveal the fast primary streamer process, this study introduces a newly developed quadruple emICCD camera system capable of capturing a sequence of four discharge images in single pulse, coupled with self-customized software for data analysis. A nanosecond pulse power with its FWHM of 10.5 ns was applied to a coaxial reactor, focusing on the dynamics of the primary streamer. Our research clarifies the spatiotemporal variations of the primary streamer's properties and examines their relation with inner electrode diameter (i.d. 0.2–2.0 mm). Results showed that in a pulse-powered coaxial electrode, there are three stages in the primary streamer process and that i.d. serves as an important factor influencing the formation and propagation of streamers. Interestingly, we found that streamer head velocity, streamer width, and streamer area for individual streamers remain constant prior to streamer channels reaching the outer electrode. Furthermore, we also observed an initial increase followed by a decrease in both streamer head velocity and streamer width with increasing i.d values. This study sheds light on the fundamental properties of the primary streamer during nanosecond pulsed discharge, contributing valuable insights for future plasma applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We search for gravitational-wave (GW) transients associated with fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst Project, during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 April 1 15:00 UTC–2019 October 1 15:00 UTC). Triggers from 22 FRBs were analyzed with a search that targets both binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star–black hole (NSBH) mergers. A targeted search for generic GW transients was conducted on 40 FRBs. We find no significant evidence for a GW association in either search. Given the large uncertainties in the distances of our FRB sample, we are unable to exclude the possibility of a GW association. Assessing the volumetric event rates of both FRB and binary mergers, an association is limited to 15% of the FRB population for BNS mergers or 1% for NSBH mergers. We report 90% confidence lower bounds on the distance to each FRB for a range of GW progenitor models and set upper limits on the energy emitted through GWs for a range of emission scenarios. We find values of order 10 ^51 –10 ^57 erg for models with central GW frequencies in the range 70–3560 Hz. At the sensitivity of this search, we find these limits to be above the predicted GW emissions for the models considered. We also find no significant coincident detection of GWs with the repeater, FRB 20200120E, which is the closest known extragalactic FRB.

Abstract

Analysis methods based on mode decomposition have been proposed to describe the characteristics of flow phenomena. Among them, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), which decomposes modes into eigenvalues and basis vectors, has long been used. Many studies have shown that POD is a useful method for capturing the characteristics of unsteady flow. In particular, Snapshot POD has attracted much recent attention and has been used to solve unsteady flow problems. However, the basis vectors of the mode obtained by conventional POD is different for each condition. Therefore, whether the basis vectors of each mode are switching in the direction of parameters (e.g. different shapes or different Reynolds numbers) or whether they develop or decay is difficult to discuss. As a result, discussions on conventional POD tend to be qualitative. To address this issue, the present study uses Parametric Global POD, a method that perfectly matches basis vectors in results with different parameters (in this study, different Reynolds numbers). Parametric Global POD method was applied to the analysis of the flow field in a curved pipe and found to capture the development or decay of modes with major basis vectors in the direction of parameters, which is difficult to achieve with conventional POD methods. Abstract

We are developing the Gamma-Ray Astro-Imager with Nuclear Emulsion project, designed for 10 MeV–100 GeV cosmic γ -ray observations with a high angular resolution (5′/0.°08 at 1–2 GeV) and a polarization-sensitive large-aperture (∼10 m ^2 ) emulsion telescope for repeated long-duration balloon flights. In 2018, a balloon-borne experiment was carried out in Australia with a 0.38 m ^2 sensitive area and a flight duration of 17.4 hr, including 6.7 hr of Vela observations. Significant improvements compared with the 2015 balloon-borne experiment were achieved by a factor of 5, including both an increase in effective area × time and a reduction in the background contribution. We aimed to demonstrate the telescope’s overall performance based on detection and imaging of a known γ -ray source, the Vela pulsar. A robust detection of the Vela pulsar was achieved with a 68% containment radius of 0.°42, at a significance of 6 σ , at energies above 80 MeV. The resulting angular profile is consistent with that of a pointlike source. We achieved the current best imaging performance of the Vela pulsar using an emulsion γ -ray telescope with the highest angular resolution of any γ -ray telescope to date.

42. Effective Reaction Temperatures of Irreversible Dust Chemical Reactions in a Protoplanetary Disk

Abstract

Dust particles in protoplanetary disks experience various chemical reactions under different physicochemical conditions through their accretion and diffusion, which results in the radial chemical gradient of dust. We performed three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the dust trajectories and the progress of fictitious irreversible reactions, of which kinetics is expressed by the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equation. The distribution of the highest temperature that each particle experiences before the degree of reaction exceeds a certain level shows the lognormal distribution, and its mode temperature was used as the effective reaction temperature. Semi-analytical prediction formulas of the effective reaction temperature and its dispersion were derived by comparing a reaction timescale with a diffusive transport timescale of dust as a function of the reaction parameters and the disk parameters. The formulas reproduce the numerical results of the effective reaction temperatures and their dispersions within 5.5% and 24%, respectively, in a wide temperature range (200–1400 K). We applied the formulas for the crystallization of amorphous silicate dust and its oxygen isotope exchange with the H _2 O vapor based on the experimentally determined kinetics. For submicron-sized amorphous forsterite dust, the predicted effective reaction temperature for the oxygen isotope exchange was lower than that of crystallization without overlap even considering their dispersions. This suggests that the amorphous silicate dust in the protosolar disk could exchange their oxygen isotopes efficiently with the ^16 O-poor H _2 O vapor, resulting in the distinct oxygen isotope compositions from the Sun.

Abstract

Deuterium fractionation in molecules is known as one of the most powerful tools to study chemical processes during star and planet formation. Among various interstellar molecules, methanol often shows very high deuterium fractionation. It is the most abundant saturated organic molecule and is known as a parent species to form more complex organic molecules. However, deriving the abundance of deuterated methanol suffers from the uncertainty in the intrinsic line intensities ( S μ ^2 ) of CH _3 OH isotopologues. Due to their floppy nature, theoretical evaluation of the S μ ^2 values is not straightforward, particularly for asymmetric-top asymmetric-frame isotopologues such as CH _2 DOH. In this study, we have measured the line frequencies and their intensities for CH _2 DOH in the millimeter-wave region from 216 to 264 GHz by using an emission-type millimeter and submillimeter-wave spectrometer. For the a -type J = 5 − 4 transition, the derived S μ ^2 values are 13%–27% larger than those theoretically calculated, except for the transitions of K _a = 2 for e _0 and K _a = 1 for e _1 affected by avoided level crossing. For b -type transitions, significant systematic differences are found between theoretical and experimental S μ ^2 values. The results of the present study enable us to accurately derive from observations the CH _2 DOH abundances, which are essential for understanding deuterium fractionation in various sources.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the CTA-North site, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to ≃20 GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in 2019 November, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data ever since. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the performance of the telescope. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period—only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope’s behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is around 20 GeV, rising to ≃30 GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.°12–0.°40, and energy resolution from 15%–50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50 hr observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03–30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. A clear periodic signal is also detected from the pulsar at the center of the Nebula.

Abstract

We study the broadband emission of Mrk 501 using multiwavelength observations from 2017 to 2020 performed with a multitude of instruments, involving, among others, MAGIC, Fermi's Large Area Telescope (LAT), NuSTAR, Swift, GASP-WEBT, and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. Mrk 501 showed an extremely low broadband activity, which may help to unravel its baseline emission. Nonetheless, significant flux variations are detected at all wave bands, with the highest occurring at X-rays and very-high-energy (VHE) γ -rays. A significant correlation (>3 σ ) between X-rays and VHE γ -rays is measured, supporting leptonic scenarios to explain the variable parts of the emission, also during low activity. This is further supported when we extend our data from 2008 to 2020, and identify, for the first time, significant correlations between the Swift X-Ray Telescope and Fermi-LAT. We additionally find correlations between high-energy γ -rays and radio, with the radio lagging by more than 100 days, placing the γ -ray emission zone upstream of the radio-bright regions in the jet. Furthermore, Mrk 501 showed a historically low activity in X-rays and VHE γ -rays from mid-2017 to mid-2019 with a stable VHE flux (>0.2 TeV) of 5% the emission of the Crab Nebula. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of this 2 yr long low state, the potential baseline emission of Mrk 501, can be characterized with one-zone leptonic models, and with (lepto)-hadronic models fulfilling neutrino flux constraints from IceCube. We explore the time evolution of the SED toward the low state, revealing that the stable baseline emission may be ascribed to a standing shock, and the variable emission to an additional expanding or traveling shock.

46. Thermal features of Heisenberg antiferromagnets on edge- versus corner-sharing triangular-based lattices: a message from spin waves

Abstract

We propose a new scheme of modifying spin waves so as to describe the thermodynamic properties of various noncollinear antiferromagnets with particular interest in a comparison between edge- versus corner-sharing triangular-based lattices. The well-known modified spin-wave theory for collinear antiferromagnets diagonalizes a bosonic Hamiltonian subject to the constraint that the total staggered magnetization be zero. Applying this scheme to frustrated noncollinear antiferromagnets ends in a poor thermodynamics, missing the optimal ground state and breaking the local U(1) rotational symmetry. We find such a plausible double-constraint condition for spin spirals as to spontaneously go back to the traditional single-constraint condition at the onset of a collinear Néel-ordered classical ground state. We first diagonalize only the bilinear terms in Holstein-Primakoff boson operators on the order of spin magnitude S and then bring these linear spin waves into interaction in a perturbative rather than variational manner. We demonstrate specific-heat calculations in terms of thus-modified interacting spin waves on various triangular-based lattices. In zero dimension, modified-spin-wave findings in comparison with finite-temperature Lanczos calculations turn out so successful as to reproduce the monomodal and bimodal specific-heat temperature profiles of the triangular-based edge-sharing Platonic and corner-sharing Archimedean polyhedral-lattice antiferromagnets, respectively. In two dimensions, high-temperature series expansions and tensor-network-based renormalization-group calculations are still controversial especially at low temperatures, and under such circumstances, modified spin waves interestingly predict that the specific heat of the kagome-lattice antiferromagnet in the corner-sharing geometry remains having both mid-temperature broad maximum and low-temperature narrow peak in the thermodynamic limit, while the specific heat of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet in the edge-sharing geometry retains a low-temperature sharp peak followed by a mid-temperature weak anormaly in the thermodynamic limit. By further calculating one-magnon spectral functions in terms of our newly developed double-constraint modified spin-wave theory, we reveal that not only the elaborate modification scheme but also quantum corrections, especially those caused by the O ( S ^0 ) primary self-energies, are key ingredients in the successful description of triangular-based-lattice noncollinear antiferromagnets over the whole temperature range of absolute zero to infinity.

Abstract

We have observed the low-mass protostellar source IRAS 15398−3359 at a resolution of 0.″2–0.″3, as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array Large Program FAUST, to examine the presence of a hot corino in the vicinity of the protostar. We detect nine CH _3 OH lines including the high-excitation lines with upper-state energies up to 500 K. The CH _3 OH rotational temperature and the column density are derived to be ${119}_{-26}^{+20}$ K and ${3.2}_{-1.0}^{+2.5}\times {10}^{18}$ cm ^−2 , respectively. The beam filling factor is derived to be ${0.018}_{-0.003}^{+0.005}$ , indicating that the emitting region of CH _3 OH is much smaller than the synthesized beam size and is not resolved. The emitting region of three high-excitation lines, 18 _3,15 –18 _2,16 , A ( E _u = 447 K), 19 _3,16 –19 _2,17 , A ( E _u = 491 K), and 20 _3,17 –20 _2,18 , A ( E _u = 537 K), is located within the 50 au area around the protostar and seems to have a slight extension toward the northwest. Toward the continuum peak, we also detect one emission line from CH _2 DOH and two features of multiple CH _3 OCHO lines. These results, in combination with previous reports, indicate that IRAS 15398−3359 is a source with hybrid properties showing both hot corino chemistry rich in complex organic molecules on small scales (∼10 au) and warm carbon-chain chemistry rich in carbon-chain species on large scales (∼100–1000 au). A possible implication of the small emitting region is further discussed in relation to the origin of the hot corino activity.

Abstract

We present the energy dependence of the intensity ratio between the 3 s 3 p ^3 P _2 —3 s 3 d ^3 D _3 transition at 233.9 Å and the 3 s 3 p ^1 P _1 —3 s 3 d ^1 D _2 transition at 243.8 Å in Fe xv studied with an electron beam ion trap over an energy range that spans resonance excitation regions. Clear resonance structures are observed in the electron energy range of 400–600 eV. The energy dependence obtained in the experiment is compared with a collisional-radiative model calculation, including resonance excitations, and overall agreement is found. It is shown that the ratio strongly reflects the population of the 3 s 3 p ^3 P _2 metastable state, which is the lower state of the 233.9 Å transition.

Abstract

Given their excellent superconducting properties, REBa2Cu3Oy (REBCO)-coated conductors (CCs) are anticipated to be utilized in a variety of magnet applications. To further increase the critical current density J c of these materials to levels needed for commercial applications, this study employs reel-to-reel (RTR) pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to fabricate REBCO+BaHfO3 (BHO) CCs. PLD creates BHO nanorods, which serve as flux-pinning defects. The material is subjected to O2+ irradiation to introduce more defects. The irradiation-induced defects serve as flux-pinning centers to the REBCO+BHO-nanorod CCs, increasing J c along the c axis and over a wide range of magnetic-field angles compared with conventional REBCO+BHO-nanorod CCs. Abstract

High-quality epitaxial Mg3Sb2 thin films are promising thermoelectric materials to enable practical applications of compact and environmentally friendly thermoelectric conversion at RT. In this study, high-quality single-crystal Mg3Sb2 with high c-plane orientation was epitaxially grown directly on annealed c-Al2O3 substrates without passive layers. These thin films exhibited about three times higher thermoelectric power factor than any previously reported values due to high carrier mobility. The ultra-smooth surface of the annealed c-Al2O3 substrate facilitated the formation of high-quality Mg3Sb2 thin films without passive layers or polycrystalline interfaces that could be carrier scatters.
