- Abstract
The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injection and helium gas fueling. Here, the ions are indirectly heated, and at a central density of a temperature of with was transiently accomplished, which corresponds to with a peak diamagnetic energy of and volume-averaged normalized plasma pressure . The routine access to high plasma densities was opened with boronization of the first wall. After boronization, the oxygen impurity content was reduced by a factor of 10, the carbon impurity content by a factor of 5. The reduced (edge) plasma radiation level gives routinely access to higher densities without radiation collapse, e.g. well above line integrated density and central temperatures at moderate ECRH power. Both X2 and O2 mode ECRH schemes were successfully applied. Core turbulence was measured with a phase contrast imaging diagnostic and suppression of turbulence during pellet injection was observed.

In this paper, we analyze heat transport in the JET tokamak using data from its high resolution ECE diagnostic and analyses based on the transfer entropy (TE). The analysis reveals that heat transport is not smooth and continuous, but is characterized by 'trapping regions' separated by `minor transport barriers'. Meat may 'jump over' these barriers and when the heating power is raised, this 'jumping' behavior becomes more prominent. To check that our results are relevant for global heat transport, we deduced an effective diffusion coefficient from the TE results. Both its value and overall radial variation are consistent with heat diffusivities reported in literature. The detailed radial structure of the effective diffusion coefficient was shown to be linked to the mentioned minor transport barriers.

In this work, we explore the response of the intermittence parameter C(1) to the magnetic topology of confined fusion plasmas, as well as to spontaneously generated zonal flows. To achieve this, we make extensive use of resistive Magneto-Hydrodynamic calculations. First, we explore single helicity calculations, where we observed clearly that the intermittence is due to the mixing between turbulence and (poloidal) flow fluctuations. The minima of C(1) were correlated with maxima of the mean transfer entropy, (T), noting that the latter have been identified with 'trapping zones' for radial transport in previous work. Thus, these 'trapping zones' are closer to monofractality than the surrounding plasma. In more realistic multiple helicity calculations, these results were confirmed, although somewhat less clear, as the mutual interaction between helicities now also contributed to the intermittence. We applied these techniques to experimental Electron Cyclotron Emission data from the W7-X stellarator and found that these observations also appear to hold in an experimental situation. Thus, we conclude that the intermittence parameter C(1) may provide valuable indirect information about the interaction between fluctuations, zonal flows, and the magnetic topology of fusion plasmas. Long-range correlations were measured using two remote reciprocating Langmuir probe systems at TJ-II. The influence of the rotational transform on the correlation was studied by scanning the magnetic configuration. A simple drift-wave correlation model, assuming an exponential decay of the correlation with different correlation lengths in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the field lines, was found to describe the observations well at low densities. The experiment was repeated at gradually higher densities, and an additional correlation was detected at a critical value of the density. In accordance with previous work, this additional correlation was ascribed to zonal flows associated with a confinement transition. Thus, the total long-range correlation is found to be a sum of the drift wave and zonal flow contributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alfvén eigenmode (AE) activity driven by NBI-produced fast ions is observed in TJ-II plasmas. A two-step response of the measured AEs to electron cyclotron heating (ECH) power is seen. In a first step, the continuous character of the unstable AEs changes to a chirping character of the marginally unstable AEs when moderate values of ECH power are applied to the NBI-only-heated plasma. In a second step, a significant reduction of the AE amplitude is observed when the ECH power is doubled. This stabilizing effect has been experimentally confirmed both on a shot-by-shot basis and along a single discharge by means of ECH modulation. The observed stabilizing effect is stronger with on-axis ECH than with off-axis ECH power injection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A description and transport analysis (energy and particles) of neutral beam heated plasmas is shown for two almost identical magnetic configurations except for a ≈1% difference in their rotational transform, .... Due to the low magnetic shear of TJ-II magnetic fields, such difference takes the low order rational ... = 8/5 to the plasma edge in one of them, while in the other the 8/5 value is near the edge but inside the plasma. A transport transition happens at lower density and plasma energy for the configuration that includes the ... = 8/5, which exhibits better particle confinement already before the transition. The dynamics of fluctuating electric field structures in the edge of the TJ-II stellarator, which display zonal-flow-like traits, is studied. These structures have been shown to be global and affect particle transport dynamically (Alonso J et al 2012 Nucl. Fusion 52 063010). In this paper we discuss the possible drive (Reynolds stress) and damping (neoclassical viscosity, geodesic transfer) mechanisms for the associated E × B velocity. We show that (a) while the observed turbulence-driven forces can provide the necessary perpendicular acceleration, a causal relation could not be firmly established, possibly because of the locality of the Reynolds stress measurements, (b) the calculated neoclassical viscosity and damping times are comparable to the observed zonal-flow relaxation times and (c) although an accompanying density modulation is observed to be associated with the zonal flow, it is not consistent with the excitation of pressure sidebands, as those present in geodesic acoustic oscillations, caused by the compression of the E × B flow field. Floating potential structures that are correlated over a long distance are observed with a 2D probe array in the plasma edge of the TJ-II stellarator. We introduce a method based on the singular value decomposition to extract the spatiotemporal structure of the global, fluctuating, zonal-flow(ZF)-like floating potential from the combined measurements of a 2D probe array and a distant single probe. The amplitude of these global structures is seen to modulate not only the high k
&thgr; spectral power of the local turbulence but also particle transport into the unconfined scrape-off layer, as observed by H&agr; monitors around the device. These observations provide the first direct evidence of the global modulation of transport by ZF-like structures. The ability to identify spontaneous and collective rotation events with flux surface symmetry opens up the possibility to perform unperturbative studies of the effective viscosity in stellarators and tokamaks.
