We report the AGILE observations of GRB 220101A, which took place at the beginning of 2022 January 1 and was recognized as one of the most energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected since their discovery. The AGILE satellite acquired interesting data concerning the prompt phase of this burst, providing an overall temporal and spectral description of the event in a wide energy range, from tens of kiloelectronvolts to tens of megaelectronvolts. Dividing the prompt emission into three main intervals, we notice an interesting spectral evolution, featuring a notable hardening of the spectrum in the central part of the burst. The average fluxes encountered in the different time intervals are relatively moderate, with respect to those of other remarkable bursts, and the overall fluence exhibits a quite ordinary value among the GRBs detected by MCAL. However, GRB 220101A is the second farthest event detected by AGILE, and the burst with the highest isotropic equivalent energy of the entire MCAL GRB sample, releasing E iso = 2.54 Ă— 1054 erg and exhibiting an isotropic luminosity of L iso = 2.34 Ă— 1052 erg sâˆ'1 (both in the 400 keVâ€"10 MeV energy range). We also analyzed the first 106 s of the afterglow phase, using the publicly available Swift-XRT data, carrying out a theoretical analysis of the afterglow, based on the forward shock model. We notice that GRB 220101A is with high probability surrounded by a wind-like density medium, and that the energy carried by the initial shock shall be a fraction of the total E iso, presumably near ∼50%. We present a comprehensive review of AGILE follow-up observations of the Gravitational Wave (GW) events and the unconfirmed marginal triggers reported in the first LIGO-Virgo (LV) Gravitational Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-1). For seven GW events and 13 LV triggers, the associated 90% credible region was partially or fully accessible to the AGILE satellite at the T0; for the remaining events, the localization region was not accessible to AGILE due to passages into the South Atlantic Anomaly, or complete Earth occultations (as in the case of GW170817). A systematic search for associated transients, performed on different timescales and on different time intervals about each event, led to the detection of no gamma-ray counterparts. We report AGILE MCAL upper limit fluences in the 400 keV–100 MeV energy range, evaluated in a time window of T0 ± 50 s around each event, as well as AGILE GRID upper limit (UL) fluxes in the 30 MeV–50 GeV energy range, evaluated in a time frame of T0 ± 950 s around each event. All ULs are estimated at different integration times and are evaluated within the portions of GW credible region accessible to AGILE at the different times under consideration. We report on a systematic search for hard X-ray and γ-ray emission in coincidence with fast radio bursts (FRBs) observed by the AGILE satellite. We used 13 yr of AGILE archival data searching for time coincidences between exposed FRBs and events detectable by the MCAL (0.4–100 MeV) and GRID (50 MeV–30 GeV) detectors at timescales ranging from milliseconds to days/weeks. The current AGILE sky coverage allowed us to extend the search for high-energy emission preceding and following the FRB occurrence. We considered all FRB sources currently included in catalogs and identified a subsample (15 events) for which a good AGILE exposure with either MCAL or GRID was obtained. In this paper we focus on nonrepeating FRBs, compared to a few nearby repeating sources. We did not detect significant MeV or GeV emission from any event. Our hard X-ray upper limits (ULs) in the MeV energy range were obtained for timescales from submillisecond to seconds, and in the GeV range from minutes to weeks around event times. We focus on a subset of five nonrepeating and two repeating FRB sources whose distances are most likely smaller than that of 180916.J0158+65 (150 Mpc). For these sources, our MeV ULs translate into ULs on the isotropically emitted energy of about 3 × 1046 erg, comparable to that observed in the 2004 giant flare from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1806–20. On average, these nearby FRBs emit radio pulses of energies significantly larger than the recently detected SGR 1935+2154 and are not yet associated with intense MeV flaring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The follow-up of external science alerts received from gamma-ray burst (GRB) and gravitational wave detectors is one of the AGILE Team's current major activities. The AGILE team developed an automated real-time analysis pipeline to analyze AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) data to detect possible counterparts in the energy range 0.1–10 GeV. This work presents a new approach for detecting GRBs using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify the AGILE-GRID intensity maps by improving the GRB detection capability over the Li & Ma method, currently used by the AGILE team. The CNN is trained with large simulated data sets of intensity maps. The AGILE complex observing pattern due to the so-called "spinning mode" is studied to prepare data sets to test and evaluate the CNN. A GRB emission model is defined from the second Fermi-LAT GRB catalog and convoluted with the AGILE observing pattern. Different p-value distributions are calculated, evaluating, using the CNN, millions of background-only maps simulated by varying the background level. The CNN is then used on real data to analyze the AGILE-GRID data archive, searching for GRB detections using the trigger time and position taken from the Swift-BAT, Fermi-GBM, and Fermi-LAT GRB catalogs. From these catalogs, the CNN detects 21 GRBs with a significance of ≥3σ, while the Li & Ma method detects only two GRBs. The results shown in this work demonstrate that the CNN is more effective in detecting GRBs than the Li & Ma method in this context and can be implemented into the AGILE-GRID real-time analysis pipeline. GRB 190114C represents a breakthrough for the physics of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), being the first GRB with delayed emission above 300 GeV, as reported by MAGIC. We present in this paper the sub-MeV/MeV data of the prompt and early afterglow emissions of GRB 190114C, as detected by AGILE and Konus-Wind, in the 20 keV–100 MeV energy range. The first stages of the burst exhibit multiple emission components, associated with an interesting spectral evolution. The first 2 s of the prompt emission can be described by a single "Band-like" spectral component. The successive 4 s show the presence of an additional high-energy spectral component, which quickly evolves into a "hard-flat" component of the νFν spectrum, extending up to 10–100 MeV and likely produced by inverse Compton radiation, whose onset and evolution are clearly shown in our data. After this phase, the νFν spectrum evolves into a "V shape," showing the persistence and spectral hardening of the additional high-energy component in substantial agreement with Fermi and Swift results. We also analyze the first ∼200 s of the early afterglow that show a reflaring episode near T0 + 15 s. We identify a new, so-far-unnoticed flux temporal break near T0 + 100 s, which is detected in hard X-rays by both Konus-Wind and INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS. We find this break incompatible with the commonly assumed adiabatic evolution of a fireball in a constant-density medium. We interpret this break as a consequence of radiative evolution of the early afterglow from a fireball expanding in a wind-like circumburst medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The accuracy of Monte Carlo simulations in reproducing the scientific performance of space telescopes (e.g., angular resolution) is mandatory for a correct design of the mission. A brand-new Monte Carlo simulator of the Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero (AGILE)/Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) space telescope, AGILESim, is built using the customizable Bologna Geant4 Multi-Mission Simulator (BoGEMMS) architecture and the latest Geant4 library to reproduce the instrument performance of the AGILE/GRID instrument. The Monte Carlo simulation output is digitized in the BoGEMMS postprocessing pipeline, according to the instrument electronic readout logic, then converted into the onboard data handling format, and finally analyzed by the standard mission on-ground reconstruction pipeline, including the Kalman filter, as a real observation in space. In this paper we focus on the scientific validation of AGILESim, performed by reproducing (i) the conversion efficiency of the tracker planes, (ii) the tracker charge readout distribution measured by the on-ground assembly, integration, and verification activity, and (iii) the point-spread function of in-flight observations of the Vela pulsar in the 100 MeV–1 GeV energy range. We measure an in-flight angular resolution (full width at half-maximum) for Vela-like point sources of and in the 100–300 and 300–1000 MeV energy bands, respectively. The successful cross-comparison of the simulation results with the AGILE on-ground and in-space performance validates the BoGEMMS framework for its application to future gamma-ray trackers (e.g., e-ASTROGAM and AMEGO). In recent years, a new generation of space missions has offered great opportunities for discovery in high-energy astrophysics. In this article we focus on the scientific operations of the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) on board the AGILE space mission. AGILE-GRID, sensitive in the energy range of 30 MeV-30 GeV, has detected many γ-ray transients of both galactic and extragalactic origin. This work presents the AGILE innovative approach to fast γ-ray transient detection, which is a challenging task and a crucial part of the AGILE scientific program. The goals are to describe (1) the AGILE Gamma-Ray Alert System, (2) a new algorithm for blind search identification of transients within a short processing time, (3) the AGILE procedure for γ-ray transient alert management, and (4) the likelihood of ratio tests that are necessary to evaluate the post-trial statistical significance of the results. Special algorithms and an optimized sequence of tasks are necessary to reach our goal. Data are automatically analyzed at every orbital downlink by an alert pipeline operating on different timescales. As proper flux thresholds are exceeded, alerts are automatically generated and sent as SMS messages to cellular telephones, via e-mail, and via push notifications from an application for smartphones and tablets. These alerts are crosschecked with the results of two pipelines, and a manual analysis is performed. Being a small scientific-class mission, AGILE is characterized by optimization of both scientific analysis and ground-segment resources. The system is capable of generating alerts within two to three hours of a data downlink, an unprecedented reaction time in γ-ray astrophysics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cygnus X-3 (Cyg X-3) is a remarkable Galactic microquasar (X-ray binary) emitting from radio to γ-ray energies. In this paper, we consider the hadronic model of emission of γ-rays above 100 MeV and their implications. We focus on the joint γ-ray and neutrino production resulting from proton-proton interactions within the binary system. We find that the required proton injection kinetic power, necessary to explain the γ-ray flux observed by AGILE and Fermi-LAT, is Lp ∼ 1038 erg s–1, a value in agreement with the average bolometric luminosity of the hypersoft state (when Cyg X-3 was repeatedly observed to produce transient γ-ray activity). If we assume an increase of the wind density at the superior conjunction, the asymmetric production of γ-rays along the orbit can reproduce the observed modulation. According to observational constraints and our modeling, a maximal flux of high-energy neutrinos would be produced for an initial proton distribution with a power-law index α = 2.4. The predicted neutrino flux is almost two orders of magnitude less than the two-month IceCube sensitivity at ∼1 TeV. If the protons are accelerated up to PeV energies, the predicted neutrino flux for a prolonged “soft X-ray state” would be a factor of about three lower than the one-year IceCube sensitivity at ∼10 TeV. This study shows that, for a prolonged soft state (as observed in 2006) possibly related to γ-ray activity and a hard distribution of injected protons, Cyg X-3 might be close to being detectable by cubic-kilometer neutrino telescopes such as IceCube. We present the results of multi-year gamma-ray observations by the AGILE satellite of the black hole binary system Cygnus X-1. In a previous investigation we focused on gamma-ray observations of Cygnus X-1 in the hard state during the period mid-2007/2009. Here we present the results of the gamma-ray monitoring of Cygnus X-1 during the period 2010/mid-2012 which includes a remarkably prolonged "soft state" phase (2010 June-2011 May). Previous 1-10 MeV observations of Cyg X-1 in this state hinted at a possible existence of a nonthermal particle component with substantial modifications of the Comptonized emission from the inner accretion disk. Our AGILE data, averaged over the mid-2010/mid-2011 soft state of Cygnus X-1, provide a significant upper limit for gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV of Fsoft < 20 × 10-8 photons cm-2 s-1 , excluding the existence of prominent non-thermal emission above 100 MeV during the soft state of Cygnus X-1. We discuss theoretical implications of our findings in the context of high-energy emission models of black hole accretion. We also discuss possible gamma-ray flares detected by AGILE. In addition to a previously reported episode observed by AGILE in 2009 October during the hard state, we report a weak but important candidate for enhanced emission which occurred at the end of 2010 June (2010 June 30 10:00-2010 July 2 10:00 UT) exactly coinciding with a hard-to-soft state transition and before an anomalous radio flare. Blazars radiate from relativistic jets launched by a supermassive black hole along our line of sight; the subclass of fiat spectrum radio quasars exhibits broad emission lines, a telltale sign of a gas-rich environment and high accretion rate, contrary to the other subclass of the BL Lacertae objects. We show that this dichotomy of the sources in physical properties is enhanced in their flaring activity. The BL Lac flares yielded spectral evidence of being driven by further acceleration of highly relativistic electrons in the jet. Here, we discuss spectral fits of multi-λ data concerning strong flares of the two flat spectrum radio quasars 3C 454.3 and 3C 279 recently detected in γ-rays by the AGILE and Fermi satellites. We find that optimal spectral fits are provided by external Compton radiation enhanced by increasing production of thermal seed photons by growing accretion. We find such flares to trace patterns on the jet-power-electron-energy plane that diverge from those followed by flaring BL Lac objects and discuss why these occur. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3C 454.3 is a prominent flat-spectrum radio quasar that in recent years attracted considerable attention because of its variable high-energy emissions. In this paper, we focus on the exceptional flaring activity of 3C 454.3 that was detected by AGILE and by Fermi-LAT in 2010 November. In the light of the time-varying data ranging from the radio, optical, and X-ray up to GeV γ-ray bands, we discuss a theoretical framework addressing all data in their overall evolution. For two weeks, the source has shown a plateau of enhanced GeV emission preceding a sudden major flare lasting about three days before decaying. The γ-ray flare onset is abrupt (about six hours), and is characterized by a prominent “Compton dominance” with the GeV flux exceeding the pre-flare values by a factor of four to five. During this episode, the optical and X-ray fluxes increased by a factor of around two. Within the standard framework of a jet launched with a Lorentz bulk factor Γ ∼ 10 from a central black hole, we explore the yields of two alternatives. Case 1, with high-energy emission originating within the broad line region (BLR); and Case 2, with most of it produced outside at larger distances of a few parsecs. We show that Case 1 has considerable problems in explaining the whole set of multifrequency data. Case 2, instead, leads to a consistent and interesting interpretation based on the enhanced inverse Compton radiation that is produced as the jet crashes onto a mirror cloud positioned at parsec scales. This model explains the γ-ray versus optical/X-ray behavior of 3C 454.3, including the otherwise puzzling phenomena such as the prominent “orphan” optical flare, and the enhanced line emission with no appreciable γ-ray counterpart that preceded the GeV γ-ray flare. It also accounts for the delayed onset of the latter on top of the long plateau. Our modeling of the exceptional 3C 454.3 γ-ray flare shows that while emission inside the canonical BLR is problematic, major and rapid variations can be produced at parsec scales with moderate bulk Lorentz factors Γ ≈ 15. Our “crashed mirror” model is also applicable to other blazar flares marked by large Compton dominance of the emitted radiation such as the flare of PKS 1830–211 in 2010 October.
