The microstructures play a crucial role in the combustion of aluminum/polytetrafluoroethylene (Al/PTFE) materials. Mechanically activated Al/PTFE typically demonstrates higher reactivity but a lower combustion rate compared to physically mixed Al/PTFE. Recently, the combustion performance of fuel-rich Al/PTFE has been well explained by the microexplosion mechanism. In this study, the combustion characteristics of stoichiometric Al/PTFE (26.5:73.5 wt%) materials with varying microstructures were investigated to further the understanding of their combustion mechanism and offer insights for their potential applications in metal cutting. The Al/PTFE materials with different microstructures were prepared using sonication and ball milling methods. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis suggest that the sonicated Al/PTFE (s-Al/PTFE) containing spherical Al particles displayed a loosely dispersed structure, while the milled Al/PTFE (m-Al/PTFE) exhibited a densely layered structure with flake-like Al particles coated by the PTFE matrix. The milled Al/PTFE was found to be mechanically activated. Combustion in quartz tubes was recorded using a high-speed camera and a video. Combustion of s-Al/PTFE demonstrated a high-temperature flame (∼2346 K) and obvious microexplosions featuring hot particles ejection, while combustion of m-Al/PTFE showed a weak flame (∼2037 K) and slow-burning, featuring dense carbon smoke. Increasing the powder density was observed to slightly decrease (∼100 K) flame temperature. Microstructure and phase analysis of combustion products were systematically conducted to elucidate the combustion behaviors. The results suggest that the residue of s-Al/PTFE contained high AlF _3 and low carbon content, whereas the residue of m-Al/PTFE exhibited the opposite condition. The results of the combustion tests suggest that microexplosions promoted the oxidation of hot Al particles and carbon products, consequently leading to a fast reaction, high flame temperature, and enhanced heat transfer capability.

A comparative study of the durability of multi-source solid waste-based soil solidification materials in solidifying different soil types has not yet been conducted. Therefore, the properties of multi-source solid waste-based solidification materials (SBM) solidifying clay soil (CS), sandy soil (SS) and organic soil (OS) subjected to dry-wet cycles of damage were studied in this work. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the SBM solidified soil was tested to evaluate the mechanical properties of the solidified soil. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury injection porosimetry (MIP) tests were conducted in order to study the micro-action mechanism. The results demonstrated that the SBM showed wide applicability and good long-term performance. The rate of strength increase of the SBM solidified soil during the long-term curing period was found to be dependent on soil characteristics. All the types of SBM solidified soils exhibited increased UCS during the first 10 cycles of the D-W. As the number of D-W cycles increased from 10 to 50, the UCS loss rate for CS reached 78%, with OS experiencing the least at 58%. The structure of SBM solidified soil exhibited softening and weakened resistance to deformation with each additional D-W cycle. The types of hydration products were consistent across all three soil types. The quantity of hydration products was influenced by the characteristics of the soil, which also contributed to the deterioration of damage resistance in D-W cycles. The number of pores within the SBM solidified soil increased with the number of D-W cycles (>10 cycles), resulting in a deterioration of the compact structure.

Heavy components of 300 M steel are usually manufactured by multi-pass forging. It is necessary to study the flow characteristics of 300 M steel during multi-pass deformation, which helps to regulate the flow behaviors during the actual forging process. In the study, multi-pass compression experiments are conducted on the Gleeble-3500 device to mimic the forging process of 300 M steel. Results show that the deformation parameters and inter-pass holding parameters can affect the work hardening rate significantly. It can be ascribed to coupling effects of dynamic softening and static softening behaviors. A unified static softening kinetics model is established to evaluate the coupling effects of static recovery, static recrystallization, and metadynamic recrystallization on the static softening behaviors. The established static softening kinetics model shows high prediction accuracy with a reliability of 0.99605. Furthermore, a new constitutive model is established to describe the effects of dynamic softening and static softening on the flow stress during multi-pass deformation. The prediction accuracy of the new constitutive model is 0.98897 with a mean absolute error of 4.075%, which demonstrates that the established constitutive model is reliable.

The low-energy electronic excitations in topological semimetal yield a plethora of a range of novel physical properties. As a relatively scarce branch, the research of triple-degenerate semi-metal is mostly confined to the stage of physical properties and theoretical analysis, there are still challenges in its practical application. This research showcases the first application of the triply degenerate semimetal PtBi _2 in electronic devices. Leveraging a van der Waals transfer method, PtBi _2 flakes were used as interlayer contacts for metal electrodes and WS _2 in transistors. The transistor achieved a switching ratio above 10 ^6 and average mobility can reach 85 cm ^2 V ^−1 s ^−1 , meeting integrated circuit requirements. Notably, the excellent air stability of PtBi _2 simplifies the device preparation process and provides more stable device performance. Transfer process reduces the Schottky barrier between metal electrodes and semiconductors while avoiding Fermi pinning during metal deposition to achieve excellent contact. This groundbreaking work demonstrates the practical applicability of PtBi _2 in the field of electronic devices while opening new avenues for the integration of novel materials in semiconductor technology, setting a precedent for future innovations.

The micro-arc oxidation method has been used to obtain calcium-phosphate coatings on titanium surface, expected to have bioactive properties. The effect of the pulse current duty cycle and voltage of micro-arc oxidation on the morphology, elemental and phase composition of the coating has been studied. Decrease in the pulse duty cycle during micro-arc oxidation results in the formation of flake, spheroidal and lamellar structures. It has been shown that the Ca/P ratio and surface roughness of the coating increases regardless of the pulse duty cycle with increase of applied voltage. Depending on the application mode, the Ca/P ratio and the roughness of calcium phosphate coatings ranged from 0.44 to 0.67 and from 4.2 to 6.8 μ m, respectively. It was found that change of the pulse current duty cycle and increase of the voltage up to 600 V results in the formation of the main crystalline phases Ca(H _2 PO _4 ) _2 (H _2 O) and CaPO _3 (OH) in the coatings.

In this study, we conducted real-world outdoor performance and stability tests on two different configurations of perovskite solar cells in the climate conditions of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Under outdoor illumination with an incident power of 69 mW cm ^−2 , this device demonstrated a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15% for an active area of 0.1 cm ^2 . The maximum power generated, measured at a solar irradiance of 72 mW/ cm ^2 , and was 1.23 mW. The second perovskite device has planar p-i-n configuration. This device achieved a PCE of 18% without masking, but the PCE dropped to 11% when the device was covered with circular aperture mask. Maximum power tracking and stability measurements of the device were conducted. Maximum power generation occurred at operating voltages ranging from 0.8 V to 1.2 V for a device with an active area of 0.095 to 0.1cm ^2 . After 30 days of environmental exposure, the device maintained more than 90% of its initial PCE.

The use of microalgae to remediate heavy metal-contaminated wastewater has attracted more and more interest. In this investigation, the green microalgae Chloroidium ellipsoideum and Desmodesmus subspicatus were used to study copper uptake from nutrient media and its effect on algal growth and metabolism. The growth of C. ellipsoideum and D. subspicatus generally decreased with increasing copper concentrations. There was a decrease in the carbohydrate content of C. ellipsoideum , but an increase was observed in D. subspicatus by treatment with various copper concentrations. Low concentrations of copper helped to increase the protein content of C. ellipsoideum , but a decline in protein content was reported for D. subspicatus . By increasing the copper concentrations, an increase in the free amino acids and a decrease in the total lipid content of C. ellipsoideum and D. subspicatus were recorded. At 0.1 mgl ^–1 copper concentration, pH of 6.8, and algal dose of 1 g L ^−1 , the maximum biosorption capacity of C. ellipsoideum was 0.398 mg g ^−1 , corresponding to the maximum reduction of 68.66% of Cu ^2+ , and 0.396 mg/g for D. subspicatus , corresponding to the maximum reduction of 59.52%. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin–Radushkevich models were applied to describe the isothermal biosorption of Cu ^2+ ions in studied algae. The Dubinin–Radushkevich model indicated that the copper biosorption mechanism was physical in nature. Cu ^2+ has a greater affinity for D. subspicatus than C. ellipsoideum , suggesting that C. ellipsoideum was relatively more resistant to Cu ^2+ toxicity than D. subspicatus . Moreover, FT-IR analysis revealed that carboxyl, amide, amino, carbonyl, hydroxyl, methyl and alkyl groups were the key groups responsible for the biosorption process. Therefore, D. subspicatus and C. ellipsoideum are efficient biosorbents for Cu ^2+ and can be used as biosorbents for heavy metals removal from wastewater.

This study conducted hot compression experiments on as-cast Mg-3Dy alloy under deformation parameters of 380 °C–470 °C and 0.001–1 s ^−1 . The microstructure of the alloy was observed using EBSD, and the flow stress of the Mg-3Dy alloy was predicted using the Arrhenius model and the particle swarm optimization-support vector regression (PSO-SVR) model. The organizational analysis results showed that the main recrystallization mechanism in the alloy is the discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) mechanism. The generation of twins in the alloy was mostly the result of local stress action. The optimal processing window for this alloy was determined to be 380 °C–470 °C and 0.001–0.01 s ^−1 through the thermal processing map. The prediction accuracies of the Arrhenius model and PSO-SVR model were evaluated using the correlation coefficient R ^2 and mean squared error MSE. The results showed that the PSO-SVR model significantly outperforms the Arrhenius model in prediction accuracy, with R ^2 value of 0.99982 and MSE of 0.074.

In the present study, ab initio density functional theory calculations were used to assess the effect of first-row transition metals (X = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) on the stability of Zr _0.5 N _0.5 nitrides. Specifically, the structural, mechanical, and electronic properties were studied to evaluate their applicability in high-temperature structural applications such as coating. The heat of formation for all X-doped Zr _0.5 N _0.5 ternaries were found to be lower than that of the undoped Zr _0.5 N _0.5 . Specifically, Mn-doped Zr _0.5 N _0.5 was observed to be the most thermodynamically stable structure, due to its lowest heat of formation. The density of states for both the undoped and doped Zr _0.5 N _0.5 nitrides indicated full metallic behavior and observed that doping with 3d-transition metals reduce the density of states at the Fermi energy, thereby enhancing the electronic stability. Furthermore, mechanical stability was observed in these nitrides with increased melting temperatures expect for Zr _0.5 N _0.5 doped Ti. Since Zr _0.5 N _0.5 doped with X is thermodynamically, electronically, and mechanically stable, they are deemed suitable for high-temperature structural applications especially Zr _0.5 N _0.5 doped Mn.

In this paper, a tunable ultra-broadband terahertz metamaterial absorber is proposed based on the phase transition material of vanadium dioxide (VO _2 ). The absorber cell consists of a petal-like monolayer vanadium dioxide, a dielectric layer, and a metal layer. The terahertz absorption bandwidth of more than 90% absorptance reaches 4.2 THz, which covers from 1.99 to 6.19 THz, and a relative bandwidth attains to 102.7%. By changing the conductivity of VO _2 , the absorbance of this structure can be dynamically adjusted from 2.4% to 98.96%. The physical mechanism of the perfect absorption in this paper is investigated by the impedance matching theory and electric field distributions. The results show that the strong coupling effect in the petal-like structure contributes to the broadening of the absorption spectrum, and the absorber is polarization-insensitive and wide-angle incidence-insensitive due to the symmetry of the cell structure. The metamaterial absorber designed in this paper is expected to have a wide range of applications in the fields of terahertz imaging, stealth, sensing and detection.

Analysis of performance of fuel cell is carried out by considering non-fluorinated electrolyte and variety of potential electrodes. The study spans low temperature regions and carried out MD investigation of transport of ions in a novel PEM fuel cell (PEMFC), which is composed of electrodes and SPEEK as a non-fluorinated electrolyte. Typical values of ion conductivity σ near room temperature are σ = 8.5 × 10 ^−2 S cm ^−1 when Pt is used as electrode, σ = 26 × 10 ^−2 S cm ^−1 when Pd _3 Ag is used as electrode, and σ = 0.34 × 10 ^−2 S cm ^−1 when Pd is used as electrode. Thus, this study reveals a twofold implications. Firstly, the choice of electrolyte affects whether the traditional Pt electrode remains to be superior for the overall fuel cell performance. Secondly, using SPEEK electrolyte has a potential to yield a closely matching ion conductivity with the one obtained from the costly Nafion electrolyte.

Over the last few decades, ‘Discontinuously Reinforced Particulate Composites (DRPCs)’ are a popular class of composite materials with considerable challenge in processing, characterization and machinability because of their increased strength-weight ratio, stiffness, specific strength and oxidization when compared to various metals and their alloys. This paper discusses experimental and numerical investigation on mechanical characteristics of aluminum metal matrix reinforced with various reinforcement particulates such as silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, and zirconium oxide, compaction pressure (kN) and hold time (s) based on Design of Experiments (DOE) and Finite Element Analysis. Initially this paper discusses the process optimization of Aluminum Matrix reinforced with different particulates experimentally to identify the favourable processing conditions by varying reinforcement materials, compaction pressure (kN) and hold time (s) based on TDOE (Taguchi’s Design of Experiments). Further, this paper concentrates to determine ‘maximum principal stress, equivalent elastic strain and equivalent (von-mises) stress’ based on Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS Workbench-2023R1). The results of the experimentation showed that the highest hardness values were achieved with ZrO _2 reinforcement material. Increasing the compaction pressure from 8 to 12 kN resulted in a slight decrease in surface roughness and porosity. Higher compaction pressures have assumed to facilitate better particle distribution and improved interfacial bonding, leading to smoother surfaces and lower void content. The simulation results showed that the maximum principal stress achieved were (2235.8 MPa) SiC, (3444.4 MPa) Al _2 O _3 , and (3582.5 MPa) ZrO _2 . The equivalent elastic strain achieved was (0.2488) SiC, (0.2421) Al _2 O _3 and (0.262) ZrO _2 . The equivalent (Von Mises) stress achieved was (28751 MPa) for SiC, (24880 MPa) for ZrO _2 and (26972 MPa) for Al _2 O _3 . This experimentation and simulation demonstrated that the PM process can be used to fabricate DRAMMC with different reinforcement particulates. The understanding gained experimentally and analytically from this research can be applied for future processing of Aluminum Matrix Reinforced with different particulates.

In this work, a nanocomposite based on nickel ferrite/activated carbon (NiF/AC) was used to modify a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the quantification of theophylline (TPL) in pharmaceutical tablets. The synthesized materials were characterized using x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy-elemental mapping and surface area analysis via the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method. Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the electrocatalytic properties of the NiF/AC-GCE toward the oxidation of TPL. The dependence of the electrochemical response on the scan rate and pH was also investigated, and the working parameters were optimized. The linear range of the established electrochemical biosensor was from 0.5 to 5 μ M (R ^2 = 0.997), with a detection limit of 0.21 μ M. The present method was tested using three pharmaceutical formulation standard samples with good accuracy and acceptable recovery. Thus, it is a promising candidate for the determination of TPL in pharmaceutical formulations.

In this study, we integrated the wide-bandgap material TiO _2 as a photosensitive layer with the WSe _2 /2DEG heterostructure, creating a hybrid WSe _2 /TiO _2 /2DEG heterojunction. This hybrid structure significantly improves the device’s photosensitivity, exhibiting a high rectification effect and a switching ratio of 10 ^3 . The photodetector shows excellent performance, with a responsivity of 0.61 A W ^−1 and a detectivity of up to 1.1×10 ^11 Jones at 405 nm, along with a very fast photoresponse speed. The buried TiO _2 channel allows photogenerated electrons to easily flow through the reduced barrier at the depleted region. This hybrid heterojunction holds promise for the development of high-performance photoelectric devices.

Enzymatic and microbial electrochemical biosensors integrate enzymes and microorganisms as biological recognition elements into the sensor design and functionality. Enzyme-based sensors offer high sensitivity and selectivity for target analyte detection. However, these have limited stability necessary for continuous analyte monitoring. Contrarily, microbe-based electrochemical sensors provide a means for continuous analyte sensing but are associated with challenges related to analyte selectivity in complex samples. To address these limitations, surface-display methods, which bind enzymes to microbial surfaces, enhance biosensor selectivity and sensitivity. This perspective outlines the application of surface-display techniques, offering a promising avenue for health monitoring.

In this work, an endeavour was made to determine the impact of the tool’s shoulder diameter, pin profile, rotational and traverse speeds on the mechanical properties of the friction stir welded namely Ti–6Al–4 V alloy joints. A total of 21 experiments were carried out based on the central composite design (CCD) concept of response surface methodology (RSM). A quadratic regression based numerical model was formulated to ascertain the relationship amidst the parameters of FSW process and the mechanical properties of the fabricated Ti alloy joints. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to confirm the importance of parameters and their interactive impacts. Optimized process parameter combinations were ascertained by grey relation based analysis (GRA) was coupled together with principal component analysis (PCA), a hybrid based approach. Single score of GRG based response was determined and GRG scores were ranked for all experiments. 1st rank was attained by the experiment no. 20 possessing a GRG score of 2.9989. Optimized values of 25 mm shoulder diameter having a taper cylindrical pin geometry employed at a tool traverse speed of 40 mm min ^−1 , rotational speed of 1400 rpm resulted in the generation of flaw free Ti alloy joint possessing a largest tensile strength of 809.8 MPa, yield strength of 778.7 MPa and percentage of elongation of 6.9%. SEM based fractography of Ti alloy joint specimens announced that taper cylindrical pin geometry along with 25 m shoulder diameter of employed tool have an inevitable part in generating frictional heat in ideal volumes and a perfect stirring action during FSW process.

This study presents a simple two-step synthesis method for the fabrication of Ag/ZnO nanocomposites to improve the photocatalytic response of ZnO. The synthesis involves ZnO nanoparticles that were fabricated from the thermal decomposition of commercial zinc acetate. In order to produce Ag/ZnO nanoparticles in a simple two-step process, ZnO nanoparticles were mixed with Ag nanoparticle suspensions previously obtained by the laser ablation of solids in liquids technique at three different fluences. Structural characterization of ZnO powders revealed the presence of single phase wurtzite ZnO nanoparticles with crystal sizes of 20 nm. On the other hand, XRD patterns for a composite sample revealed the presence of signals associated to both ZnO and Ag suggesting that silver nanoparticles were attached to the ZnO particles surface. Optical characterization of the ZnO powders, carried out by UV–vis spectroscopy, showed a strong absorption band centered at 380 nm, which is associated to excitonic transitions in ZnO nanoparticles, whilst absorption measurements of silver nanoparticles colloids revealed the presence of a strong band centered near 412 nm. This band shifts to shorter wavelengths with increasing fluence from 2.6 to 6.2 J cm ^−2 , indicating changes in nanoparticles size. Photocatalytic degradation tests of methylene blue under UV irradiation were carried out using pure ZnO, Ag colloids and Ag/ZnO nanoparticles. After the first 30 min of irradiation, it was observed that the silver nanoparticles reached degradation percentages of 16, 22 and 29% for samples synthesized at 2.6, 4.2 and 6.2 J cm ^−2 , respectively. Meanwhile the ZnO sample reached a value of 13% after 30 min. Regarding the Ag/ZnO composite sample, the percentage of degradation after 30 min was 36%, demonstrating a considerable enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to ZnO. After 24 h irradiation, Ag/ZnO degraded 95% of the methylene blue solution. It was observed that decorating ZnO with laser produced silver nanoparticles accelerates the photocatalytic response of ZnO by enhancing the activity at short times.

Agricultural production in Vietnam annually generates a substantial volume of by-products and waste, with rice husks constituting the predominant fraction. Due to their meager economic value, rice husks are typically deemed agricultural waste and are commonly disposed of through incineration or discharge into rivers, contributing significantly to environmental pollution. In this investigation, rice husks were employed as the principal raw material for synthesizing silicon carbide. A blend of rice husks and silica gel in a ratio of 1.4/1 was subjected to sintering in a CO _2 environment within the temperature range of 800 °C–1300 °C for 30 min. The chemical composition of the resultant product post-pyrolysis was ascertained in accordance with the ISO 21068–2:2008 standard. The capacity for SiC formation was further assessed utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The outcomes revealed that the optimal temperature for SiC synthesis was 1200 °C. The composition of the sample post-pyrolysis was determined as 20.4% SiC, 51.2% SiO _2 , and 26.4% C (%wt). The primary phase constituents encompass amorphous carbon, cristobalite, α -SiC, and β -SiC. Scanning Electron Microscopy/ Energy Dispersive x-ray imaging of the product at 1200 °C exhibited dispersed SiC crystals on a SiO _2 -C substrate. The presence of SiC suggests the potential application of the product as a wear-resistant material.

MOFs are a class of porous crystalline materials whose unique properties have led to applicability in several fields ranging from gas adsorption to drug delivery. Despite their high potential, MOFs are usually found as fine powders, a property that can limit their use in industrial applications. Here, a novel approach is proposed to form densified Cu-MOF (Cu-BTC) powders and monoliths using 1,2-ethanedisulfonic acid (EDSA) as a densification agent. A MOF/EDSA mixture was heated to ∼150 °C; the molten EDSA not only promotes the growth of larger MOF crystallites, but also stimulates condensation reactions between the carboxylate-based MOF ligands, further binding the particles together. When this reaction was done in a stainless-steel die under pressure MOF-based monoliths could also be formed. Notably, using this approach, the MOF had a higher density, significantly improving the volumetric CO _2 adsorption capacity. We believe this contribution provides the basis for future work wherein the intrinsic MOF particle surfaces can be selectively engineered to improve their properties towards shaping for industrial applications.

Ferroelectric HfO _2 -based materials and devices show promising potential for applications in information technology but face challenges with inadequate electrostatic control, degraded reliability, and serious variation in effective oxide thickness scaling. We demonstrate a novel interface-type switching strategy to realize ferroelectric characteristics in atomic-scale amorphous binary oxide films, which are formed in oxygen-deficient conditions by atomic layer deposition at low temperatures. This approach can avoid the shortcomings of reliability degradation and gate leakage increment in scaling polycrystalline doped HfO _2 -based films. Using theoretical modeling and experimental characterization, we show the following. (1) Emerging ferroelectricity exists in ultrathin oxide systems as a result of microscopic ion migration during the switching process. (2) These ferroelectric binary oxide films are governed by an interface-limited switching mechanism, which can be attributed to oxygen vacancy migration and surface defects related to electron (de)trapping. (3) Transistors featuring ultrathin amorphous dielectrics, used for non-volatile memory applications with an operating voltage reduced to ±1 V, have also been experimentally demonstrated. These findings suggest that this strategy is a promising approach to realizing next-generation complementary metal-oxide semiconductors with scalable ferroelectric materials.

Due to it has large saturation magnetization (Ms), high magnetocrystalline anisotropy field and high ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequency, barium ferrite (BaM) has attracted more and more attentions in the fields of magnetic recording media, permanent magnets and microwave devices. Here, BaM thin films were deposited on Pt/TiO _2 /SiO _2 /Si substrates, and the effect of annealing temperature on the microstructure, magnetic and microwave properties of barium ferrite thin films was investigated in detail. It is found that when the BaM thin film was annealed at 1035 °C, it has good properties. The XRD data provide clear evidence that the BaM thin films have high c-axis orientation, and the Lotgering factor is as high as 0.96. The AFM morphology show that BaM grains are out of the film plane, and they are hexagonal. The magnetic hysteresis curves indicated that both saturated magnetization (4 π Ms), remanence ratio and coercive (Hc) for out of plane increase with increasing Ta first, then decreased, and get the maximum value at 1035 °C. The ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurement show that the FMR linewidth is 143 Oe@50 GHz, it means that this this sample has low microwave loss in millimeter wave loss, and the FMR absorption can be tuned by applied magnetic field. These results make sure that this BaM thin film is possible use in millimeter wave devices such as filers, circulators and isolators.

Structural, optical, and magnetic properties of ferrite series with chemical formula Zn _0.5 Ni _x Mg _0.5−x Fe _2 O _4 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) were investigated. Co-precipitation and sol–gel methods were used to synthesis the samples and to investigate further the influence of these preparation methods on the properties of Zn _0.5 Ni _x Mg _0.5−x Fe _2 O _4 nano-ferrites. X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the samples crystallize in a cubic spinel structure with space group Fd3m:1. The crystallite size of Zn _0.5 Ni _x Mg _0.5−x Fe _2 O _4 nanoparticles was decreased from 19.15 to 11.65 nm with increasing Ni content for the samples of co-precipitation method, while the opposite behavior was observed in case of sol–gel method which was increased from 13.90 to 21.90 nm. Moreover, the optical investigation by UV-visible spectroscopy revealed that the energy band gap of the samples of co-precipitation method ranged (6.04–6.08) eV compared to (4.44–4.50) eV of sol–gel method. For both methods, substitution of Ni ^+2 by Mg ^+2 in Zn _0.5 Ni _x Mg _0.5−x Fe _2 O _4 affects the remanent magnetization (M _r ), coercivity (H _c ) and saturation magnetization (M _s ) suggesting the super-paramagnetic behavior of the samples. The substitution of Ni resulted in small values of coercivity ranged 0.758 to 164.62 Oe. The M _s was ranged 20.39 to 127.57 emu g ^−1 and an enhancement in magnetization was observed which increases the value of M _s that was found to be maximum with x = 0.4 of co-precipitation method (127.57 emu g ^−1 ). The magnetic behavior of synthesized Ni doped nanoparticles makes them suitable candidate for sensing and high-frequency applications and for use in hyperthermia treatment. The characterization outcomes may recommend that co-precipitation method is preferred over sol–gel method for refined structure and preferable properties of Zn _0.5 Ni _x Mg _0.5−x Fe _2 O _4 nanoparticles.

In recent years, fabric-reinforced cementitious mortar (FRCM) has emerged as a popular choice for strengthening reinforced concrete and masonry structures due to several advantages over conventional fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Particularly, the enhancement of Reinforced Concrete (RC) columns using FRCM composites has garnered significant attention. While experimental investigations are crucial for assessing the effectiveness of FRCM, physical experiments are often resource-intensive and time-consuming. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the impact of various design parameters on the performance of RC columns strengthened with FRCM under low-amplitude cyclic loads simulating earthquakes through Finite Element (FE) analysis. The FE model, incorporating columns and FRCM strengthening materials, was developed using the DIANA 10.5 program. To assess the reliability of the model, analytical results were compared with experimental findings from a previous study, focusing on lateral strength, hysteresis behavior, and failure modes. The validation outcomes demonstrated a reasonable correlation between the test and numerical results. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to explore the influence of input parameters, such as concrete compressive strength, fabric reinforcement quantity, longitudinal reinforcement ratio of the columns, and pre-axial loading levels, on the seismic performance of RC columns reinforced with FRCM. The findings of the sensitivity analysis were discussed in detail.

Neuromorphic computing (NC), considered as a promising candidate for future computer architecture, can facilitate more biomimetic intelligence while reducing energy consumption. Neuron is one of the critical building blocks of NC systems. Researchers have been engaged in promoting neuron devices with better electrical properties and more biomimetic functions. Two-dimensional (2D) materials, with ultrathin layers, diverse band structures, featuring excellent electronic properties and various sensing abilities, are promised to realize these requirements. Here, the progress of artificial neurons brought by 2D materials is reviewed, from the perspective of electrical performance of neuron devices, from stability, tunability to power consumption and on/off ratio. Rose up to system-level applications, algorithms and hardware implementation of spiking neural network, stochastic neural network and artificial perception system based on 2D materials are reviewed. 2D materials not only facilitate the realization of NC systems but also increase the integration density. Finally, current challenges and perspectives on developing 2D material-based neurons and NC systems are systematically analyzed, from the bottom 2D materials fabrication to novel neural devices, more brain-like computational algorithms and systems.

In this study, we focused on the impact of nonlinear optical properties on Zn-doped NiO thin film, which was analyzed using z scan and THG technique. The z-scan technique was performed using a continuous wave laser. The open aperture shows that all films exhibit the reverse saturable absorption and the mechanism responsible for two-photon absorption, excited state absorption, and free carrier absorption. The closed aperture results in the negative nonlinear refraction caused by the thermal effects. The enhancement in the third-order susceptibility from 5.37 × 10 ^−3 to 13.24 × 10 ^−3 esu with Zn doping is due to the presence and increase in the concentration of defect levels in the films. The THG studies were performed using femtosecond and nanosecond lasers and revealed that the enhancement in the signal with the rise in Zn doping concentration was attributed to the enhancement of photoexcitation and relaxation processes within the sample. These results suggest that Zn-doped NiO films have significant potential for applications in the realm of optoelectronic applications.

Bio-based polyurethanes are novel material with potential advantages for sustainable development, and their development play significant roles in promoting sustainability. Curcumin, a natural monomer, possesses high biological activity and features a symmetrical chemical structure with various functional groups such as phenolic hydroxyl, carbonyl and benzene ring. The presence of hydroxyl groups in the structure of curcumin provides essential conditions for its involvement in polyurethane synthesis. This review article provides an overview of the applications of curcumin as a chain extender, crosslinking agent and end-capper in polyurethanes, as well as its effects on the chemical structure, mechanical properties, and chemical stability of polyurethanes. Furthermore, the functional applications of curcumin-based polyurethanes in various fields such as medicine, food packaging, and coatings are discussed. Finally, considering the current research status and inherent properties of curcumin, the future prospects of curcumin-based polyurethanes are contemplated.

Transition metal hemicarbides, specifically M _2 C (where M = V, Nb, Ta, Mo and W), have received considerable attention in the fields of catalysis and metallurgy. However, the determination of the exact phase of each compound can still be challenging due to the close energetic proximity of its various polymorphs. This study uses first-principles calculations to carefully consider the subtle differences between different polymorphs, with temperature as a key factor. It is found that the energies of each polymorph of M _2 C are close, but can be distinguished when temperature effects are considered. This means that temperature plays an important role in the polymorph transformations. In addition, these phases exhibit dynamic stability at both zero and finite temperatures, in part due to the particular ordering of C atom occupancy in the metal lattice interstices. The study can provide calculations of a range of properties that help to identify stable structures and deepen the understanding of these materials in terms of chemical bonding, structural changes, lattice thermal vibrations and molecular dynamics.

Glass frit used in conductive silver (Ag) pastes has a significant impact not only on the electrical performance but also on the long-term reliability of metallized electrodes in crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. Here, we investigated the role of compositional changes on the metallization process of silver pastes by adjusting the SiO _2 , ZnO, Li _2 O, or Bi _2 O _3 in lead borate glass melts, and performed damp heat (DH) tests in an acidic damp heat environment. It was found that the addition of Bi _2 O _3 resulted in a decrease in conversion efficiency (Eta) of only 6.44% after the cell was treated with dilute acetic acid. Under scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was observed that the cell with this glass frit had minimal changes in the microstructure of its silver-silicon contacts and silver electrodes. This finding helps to improve the performance and stability of solar cells in harsh environments.

This study explores the impact of deposition rate on the properties of TiO _2 thin films produced via spray pyrolysis, focusing on their application in gas sensors. The analysis covers structural, morphological, optical, and gas sensing characteristics of TiO _2 films deposited at rates between 1 and 2.5 ml min ^−1 . Studies show optimizing TiO _2 film deposition rates at 2 ml min ^−1 significantly enhances formaldehyde detection, improving selectivity and achieving a rapid response of 7.52 at 20 ppm concentration. This study underscores the pivotal role of deposition rate optimization in augmenting the gas-sensing efficacy of TiO _2 films, particularly for formaldehyde detection at ambient conditions. Optimal deposition rates are instrumental in enhancing sensor performance. The synergistic application of XRD and Raman spectroscopy unequivocally confirmed the presence of the TiO _2 anatase phase, which is of paramount significance in gas sensing applications. FESEM furnished high-resolution insights into the surface morphology, revealing a spherical architecture. Furthermore, UV–vis spectroscopy was employed to assess the optical band gap of the films, which exhibited a decrement correlating with the rate of deposition. Notably, a deposition rate of 2 ml min ^−1 markedly improved the TiO _2 films’ sensing performance. These insights are critical for developing cost-effective, high-performance gas sensors for cutting-edge applications.

This article describes the laboratory-scale manufacture of hydrophobically modified oyster shell powder (mOSP) via a silane coupling agent and used as cement substitutes at 0% to 2.5%. Hydrophobic chemicals have been used in concrete to minimise capillary action by researchers. Although hydrophobic fillers improve concrete’s water repellency, replacing fine particles with them in higher proportions has a negative effect. We can use hydrophobically modified fillers in smaller amounts to replace cement while maintaining its critical properties. When mOSP is added in various quantities to binary and ternary mixes with natural zeolite, concrete hydration, mechanical strength, and durability are examined. At a 1.5% replacement ratio, mOSP improved concrete characteristics and durability. With free water and the hydrophobic modified nOSP, concrete mixes were consistently more workable. A gliding effect on the cementitious matrix caused by the surface roughness and hydrophobicity of the developed silane-coated nOSP increases the slump value. The 28-day compressive strength of concrete containing modified nOSP ranged from 39 to 42 MPa without zeolite and 43 to 46 MPa with it. Compressive strength increased more when 10% natural zeolite (NZ) was added with different amounts of mOSP. The RCPT values of the concrete series without zeolite dropped until 1% mOSP replacement (mOSCII), while the 1.5% mix (mOSZIII) had the lowest value. The angularly modified nOSP aggregates interlocked, improving the migration coefficient of mOSP concrete.

Chitosan (CS) samples with average molecular weight (Mw) of 80.4, 61.8, and 45.2 kDa were prepared by the heterogeneous degradation of CS using 1% H _2 O _2 solution under ambient conditions. The degree of deacetylation (DD) of the resultant CS was almost unchanged compared with that of the original CS. The sulfur nanoparticles (SNPs) were prepared by acidification of sodium thiosulfate (Na _2 S _2 O _3 ) in a CS-Cu ^2+ complex solution. The influence of Mw CS on the size of SNPs was investigated. The average size of the SNPs/CS-Cu ^2+ complexes measured through Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images was 25.1, 32.3, and 48.3 nm for using CS with Mw of 80.4, 61.8, and 45.2 kDa, respectively. The obtained SNPs/CS-Cu ^2+ complexes were also characterized by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The synthetic method is favorable for large-scale production. Furthermore, the SNPs/CS-Cu ^2+ complex can be used as an agent for controlling plant disease in agriculture.

The escalating contamination of water bodies with antibiotic residues is an urgent environmental and public health issue. This study aimed to fabricate an innovative photocatalytic composite (CMZ) by combining chitosan, magnetic iron oxide (Fe _3 O _4 ), and zinc oxide (ZnO) for efficiently removing antibiotic moxifloxacin (MFX) water. Comprehensive characterization of the fabricated CMZ was performed using various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm analysis. The synergistic incorporation of ZnO, Fe _3 O _4 , and chitosan in the CMZ composite altered the structural properties of ZnO and chitosan The band gap energy of CMZ was 2.58 eV, significantly boosting its photocatalytic effectiveness under visible light exposure. The CMZ composites exhibited a high efficiency in catalyzing MFX degradation in aqueous environments. The optimal conditions for MFX degradation were established, including a neutral pH level of 7, a 90 min exposure to irradiation, and employing 0.1 g of the CMZ catalyst. The degradation process obeyed closely to the first-order kinetic model. The CMZ material showed consistently high performance in degrading MFX across four consecutive reuse cycles, emphasizing its practical applicability for mitigating antibiotic pollution.

In this study, we prepared Al _2 O _3 -TiO _2 (AT) mixed oxides to synthesize NiW catalysts for sulfur removal reactions. The AT support samples were prepared with various surfactants. Additionally, gallium atoms (2.4 wt%) were introduced as an additive to coat the outer surface layers of AT support that lacked Al ^3+ or Ti ^2+ cations. Characterization results showed substantial differences in textural properties, chemical composition, and surface acidity. The x-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) results demonstrated that the NiW/AT-L-Ga sample has a better combination of dispersion, sulfidation, and promotion among materials. The sulfided NiW/AT-L-Ga catalyst had the highest catalytic activity. After incorporating Ga, XPS observed that the activity could be associated with an increase in the NiWS active phase; however, including a surfactant in the synthesis of the support allowed an increase in the amount of NiWS phase. The active phase was modeled considering the HR-TEM results for the slab length, revealing the atoms at the border susceptible to promotion.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion has become a predominant cause of pipeline and equipment failure in oil and gas fields. This research examines the corrosion behavior of steels with varying chromium contents in simulated shale gas formation water environments. Weight loss testing, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive x-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and x-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were employed. The findings suggest that an elevated Cr content in steel results in a gradual reduction in its uniform corrosion rate in a CO _2 -SRB coexistence environment. This can be primarily attributed to the significant distribution of Cr content throughout the entire product film, including both biofilm and corrosion products, thereby enhancing the product film’s protectiveness. Additionally, the competitive corrosion between CO _2 and SRB, as well as the influence mechanism of Cr on corrosion, were discussed.

Fragility is one of the central concepts in glass and liquid sciences, as it characterizes the extent of deviation of viscosity from Arrhenius behavior and is linked to a range of glass properties. However, the intervention of crystallization often prevents the assessment of fragility in poor glass-formers, such as supercooled metallic liquids. Hence experimental data on their compositional dependence are scarce, let alone fundamentally understood. In this work, we use fast scanning calorimetry to overcome this obstacle and systematically study the fragility in a ternary La–Ni–Al system, over previously inaccessible composition space. We observe fragility dropped in a small range with the Al alloying, indicating an alloying-induced fragility crossover. We use x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, resistance measurements, electronic structure calculations, and DFT-based deep-learning atomic simulations to investigate the cause of this fragility drop. These results show that the fragility crossover can be fundamentally ascribed to the electronic covalency associated with the unique Al–Al interactions. Our findings provide insight into the origin of fragility in metallic liquids from an electronic structure perspective and pave a new way for the design of metallic glasses.

This research examines the performance of epoxy, ceramic, and graphene coatings on stainless steel 316 in a producer gas environment, focusing on corrosion and erosion resistance. This research aimed to identify the most effective coating for applications in harsh gasification environments. In this research, various analyses, including microstructural examination, hardness and weight measurements, FESEM analysis, and EDAX analysis, were conducted to evaluate the performance of the coatings. The producer gas was passed on to all the coated samples for a period of 100 h. The significant findings include the superior corrosion and erosion resistance of ceramic-coated stainless steel, as evidenced by low weight fluctuations, maintained hardness levels, and elemental stability. Graphene coatings exhibit high hardness but increased porosity, raising concerns about durability, while epoxy coatings are vulnerable to gas-induced structural alterations. The inclusion rating analysis underscored the ceramic coatings’ ability to preserve consistent material properties. Overall, ceramic coatings have emerged as the preferred option for gasification environments due to their structural resilience, inclusion integrity, and elemental stability. Considering the inclusion integrity, mechanical strength, weight stability, and elemental stability, ceramic-coated stainless steel 316 samples exhibit better resistance toward producer gas influence. This research contributes valuable insights for material selection in applications exposed to harsh gasification environments, emphasizing the importance of coating selection for long-term durability and performance.

Memristors have unique non-volatile characteristics that potentially can emulate biological synapses for applications in neural computing systems. However, the random formation of conductive filaments in these devices can cause various unreliability problems. In this work, films of a composite of ZnO nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes were prepared as functional layers for memristors by an in-situ growing strategy (ZnO@CNT-IS) using a straightforward high-temperature annealing treatment. This approach allowed for the formation of a high-quality films with uniform loading of ZnO nanoparticles on the carbon nanotubes, which contributed to a lower formation energy for oxygen vacancies and increased electron transfer rate. As a result, the memristors exhibited faster switching response speed, lower power consumption, and a stabilised switching ratio even after 2000 switching cycles. Based on the analog switching behaviour, the ZnO@CNT-IS-based devices showed significant biological synapse functions and plasticity, indicating their potential for high-density storage and neuromorphic computing.

The investigation of conductive silver pastes and inks has witnessed extensive research within the domain of printed electronics in recent years, primarily owing to the exceptional electrical conductivity and steadfastness intrinsic to silver. This paper introduces an approach for the fabrication of stable, cost-effective, and low-resistance conductive silver paste tailored for flexible printed circuits. This method facilitates the solidification of the conductive silver paste into a highly conductive silver film at a curing temperature of 250 °C. In the process of preparing the conductive silver paste, Ag flakes is subject to modification through the incorporation of Ag NPs, which are subsequently sintered at a low temperature curing setting. The sintering of Ag NPs serves to establish connections between adjacent particles of Ag flakes within the paste, thereby enhancing the conductivity and flexibility of the resulting conductive printed silver film. When the ratio of Ag NPs to Ag flakes is maintained at 10:90, the volume resistivity of the Ag NPs-modified film registers at 2.7 × 10 ^−5 Ω.cm. This demonstrates a substantial 53.45% reduction in the volume resistivity of the conductive printed silver film modified with Ag NPs, compared to its Ag NPs-absent counterpart. Post 200 cyclic bending tests, it becomes evident that the resistance change rate in the Ag NPs-modified conductive printed silver film is a mere 12.5%, whereas the Ag NPs-modified silver film lacking Ag NPs displays a resistance change rate of 21.5%. This discrepancy underscores the capacity of Ag NPs-modified Ag flakes to fortify the bending resistance of the conductive printed silver film. Comprehensive data analysis substantiates that the improvements in electrical conductivity and bending resistance can be attributed to the superior bridging facilitated by the sintering process on the surface of the Ag NPs-modified Ag flakes.

In the present study, different molar ratios of Fe-doped ZnO/biochar (FZBC) were synthesized using a coprecipitation method. ZnO nanoparticles with a size of approximately 30 nm were well dispersed on the biochar matrix. The bandgap energy decreases from 3.11 to 3.08 eV as the Fe-ion concentration increases from 1 to 7 mol%. Photocatalytic studies demonstrated that FZBC exhibited photodegradation toward acid orange 7 (AO7). FZBC exhibited a photodegradation efficiency of AO7 at a concentration of 10 mg. L ^−1 (93.17%), which was nine times greater than that of pure ZnO (10.30%). Furthermore, the FZBC materials also demonstrated effective inactivation of E. coli , with an antibacterial rate reaching 98%. Overall, these materials are expected to be cost-effective and suitable for photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial activities.

TiO _2 / g -C _3 N _4 /biochar (TCNBC) catalysts were prepared by the hydrolysis method for the photocatalytic degradation of doxycycline antibiotic (DC), with biochar obtained from the pyrolysis of Phragmites australis. The catalysts were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDX), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption. The photocatalytic activity results showed that the TCNBC catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity than pure TiO _2 or g -C _3 N _4 . Its peak catalytic activity, achieving a decomposition efficiency of 91.93% and a mineralization efficiency of 81.50%, can be attributed to the synergistic effect of biochar, TiO _2 , and g -C _3 N _4 . Even after four cycles of use, the catalyst still maintained relatively high activity for the degradation of DC. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TCNBC decreased from 91.93% to 86.30% after four recycling events.

The need for biodegradable composites has increased for many applications in recent years. Cellulose acetate (CA) and cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) are relatively easy and cheap to fabricate, as well as relatively easy to decompose compared to other polymers. These materials are transparent and lightweight with low tensile properties. In this current study, the effect of Tapanuli clay addition on tensile and decomposition properties of CA and CA–CAB systems were investigated. Tapanuli organoclay was prepared by a cation exchange treatment using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br) surfactant to Na-bentonite. Prior to the treatment, the Tapanuli clay was subjected to purification from organic and carbonate compounds and to balance the cations by homogenizing them into Na ^+ . The basal spacing of Tapanuli clay increased from 1.52 nm up to 1.98 nm. CA and CA −5 wt% CAB composites were then synthesized using a solvent casting method. It was found that the addition of both 5 wt% CAB and 7 wt% organoclay in CA decreased the tensile strength and reduced the mass loss by 70%. After 45 days of the decomposition test, it was indicated that the presence of 5 wt% CAB in CA reduced the mass loss of the system by about 50%. These findings were con-firmed by the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images which showed different patterns of as-synthesized and decomposed materials. In conclusion, the presence of 1 wt% Tapanuli organoclay slightly increased the decomposed mass of CA film and enhanced the tensile strength of CA-co-CAB.

The particle size and morphology of crushed stones impact their macroscopic mechanical and physical properties, which has become a hot topic in the study of road and geotechnical engineering. However, some reported studies fail to control the particle morphology as the only independent variable. This paper presented a new method to print artificial aggregates based on 3D printing technology of particles. The applicability of the new method was verified with uniaxial compression and dynamic modulus tests of asphalt mixtures formed by the printing aggregates. Results showed that the printing aggregates earned similar physical properties to real coarse when sintered at 1400 °C with alumina ceramic powder and CuO: TiO _2 a 1:2 additive in mass. Besides, the gross volume density, compressive strength, and shrinkage of the printing aggregates show a similar trend of increasing and then decreasing with the increase of additives. The optimal mass percentage of additives was obtained to be 5%. Mechanical tests indicated that the mechanical indexes of the asphalt mixtures formed with the two types of coarse aggregates were similar, while the results of the specimens formed with artificial coarse aggregates showed less dispersion. The stability of test results was significantly improved for different asphalt mixture specimens prepared with 3D printed coarse aggregate. This provides a basic method for further research on the multi-scale properties of particle material.

To enhance the precision of detecting defects on steel plate surfaces and diminish the incidences of false detection and leakage, the ESI-YOLOv8 algorithm is introduced. This algorithm introduces a novel EP module and integrates the large separation convolutional attention module and the spatial pyramid pooling module to propose the SPPF-LSKA module. Additionally, the original CIOU loss function is replaced with the INNER-CIOU loss function. The EP module minimizes redundant computations and model parameters to optimize efficiency and simultaneously increases the multi-scale fusion mechanism to expand the sensory field. The SPPF-LSKA module reduces computational complexity, accelerates model operation speed, and improves detection accuracy. Additionally, the INNER-CIOU loss function can improve detection speed and model accuracy by controlling the scale size of the auxiliary border.The results of the experiment indicate that, following the improvements made, the algorithm’s detection accuracy has increased to 78%, which is 3.7% higher than the original YOLOv8. Furthermore, the model parameters were reduced, and the verification was conducted using the CoCo dataset, resulting in an average accuracy of 77.8%. In conclusion, the algorithm has demonstrated its ability to perform steel plate surface defect detection with efficiency and accuracy.

We investigate an active dual-control metamaterial leveraging electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), exploiting near-field interactions between electric and magnetic dipole resonances. Our hybrid strip element, combining metal and vanadium dioxide, generates electric dipole resonance, while split-ring resonators integrating metal and photosensitive silicon induce magnetic dipole resonance. Simulations confirm coupling validity and demonstrate dynamic adjustability of EIT via temperature and light intensity changes. EIT modulation transitions between transparent and non-resonant states due to temperature fluctuations, or resonant states with varying light intensity. Temperature adjustments dominate when both factors are altered. Analysis via a coupled oscillator model reveals modulation of damping rates as the origin of disappearance curve variations. This innovative design enhances tunable EIT metamaterial versatility, with implications for high transmission ratios and adaptable slow-light effects in terahertz applications.

Titanium and its alloys are commonly used in modern implantology. Cell viability on the surface of titanium implants depends on the surface topography, roughness, and wettability. Laser treatment is a successful method to control the surface morphology. The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate the effects of laser ablation on titanium surfaces and their interactions with cells and bacteria. Cell adhesion, proliferation, and bacterial retention on smooth and laser-textured samples of commercially pure and nanostructured titanium of two grades were evaluated. Femtosecond laser treatment effectively enhances the wettability. Titanium grade four exhibits superior adhesion and proliferation rates when compared to titanium grade two. The cytotoxicity of nanostructured titanium is significantly lower, regardless of the surface treatment. Laser treatment resulted in increased short-term cell proliferation on grade two titanium and long-term cell proliferation on nanostructured grade two titanium only. Although the laser ablation has a limited effect on bacterial adhesion, the coverage of less than 1% in most samples indicates that the material itself has an antibacterial effect on the bacterial strain Streptococcus oralis . These findings provide valuable insights into how different material structures and surface treatments can affect cellular response and antibacterial properties for potential use in dental implantology.

This paper suggests a simple methodology to optimize the uniaxial fatigue predictions for filled natural rubbers. In this study, the stress ratio $R$ effect on rubber fatigue life is investigated numerically. For this purpose, a Finite Element model is developed to determine both amplitude and mean stress values in the critical zone of the considered specimen. The suggested model incorporates the $R$ ratio effect using an equivalent stress amplitude. It is proven that the new model can efficiently describe the fatigue life for a large $R$ -value interval with higher accuracy.

Quantum communication has been at the forefront of modern research for decades, however it is severely hampered in underwater applications, where the properties of water absorb nearly all useful optical wavelengths and prevent them from propagating more than, in most cases, a few metres. This research reports on-demand quantum light sources, suitable for underwater optical communication. The single photon emitters, which can be engineered using an electron beam, are based on impurities in hexagonal boron nitride. They have a zero phonon line at ∼436 nm, near the minimum value of water absorption and are shown to suffer negligible transmission and purity loss when travelling through water channels. These emitters are also shown to possess exceptional underwater transmission properties compared to emitters at other optical wavelengths and are utilised in a completely secure quantum key distribution experiment with rates of kbits s ^−1 .

Innovative pulsed current-assisted multi-pass rolling tests were conducted on a 12-roll mill during the rolling deformation processing of SUS304 ultra-thin strips. The results show that in the first rolling pass, the rolling reduction rate of a conventionally rolled sample (at room temperature) is 33.8%, which can be increased to 41.5% by pulsed current-assisted rolling, enabling the formation of an ultra-thin strip with a size of 67.3 μ m in only one rolling pass. After three passes of pulsed current-assisted rolling, the thickness of the ultra-thin strip can be further reduced to 51.7 μ m. To clearly compare the effects of a pulsed current on the microstructure and mechanical response of the ultra-thin strip, ultra-thin strips with nearly the same thickness reduction were analyzed. It was found that pulsed current can reduce the degree of work-hardening of the rolled samples by promoting dislocation detachment, reducing the density of stacking faults, inhibiting martensitic phase transformation, and shortening the total length of grain boundaries. As a result, the ductility of ultra-thin strips can be effectively restored to approximately 16.3% while maintaining a high tensile strength of 1118 MPa.Therefore, pulsed current-assisted rolling deformation shows great potential for the formation of ultra-thin strips with a combination of high strength and ductility.

This study investigates the friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminum alloy 7075-T651, mainly focusing on managing heat generation during the process. The critical parameters influencing heat amount and the material flow including FSW tool shoulder diameter (SD) and travel speed (TS) were investigated. Two far different SD of 10 mm and 20 mm with constant pin diameter (PD) of 5.70 mm that resulted in PD: SD ratios of 1:1.75 and 1: 3.50, respectively, were employed. Furthermore, three different travel speeds of 25, 50, and 75 mm min ^−1 at a constant rotation rate of 600 rpm were used in combination with the two PD: SD ratios. The macrographic and radiographic results indicated that the smallest PD: SD ratio has successfully achieved sound friction stir welded (FSWed) joints for the same travel speeds. Results also indicated that a significant amount of material deformed under a high PD: SD ratioat a high TS of 75 mm min ^−1 , while flash increased with reducing PD: SD ratio.Mechanical properties were compared, revealing that hardness in the nugget zone (NZ) decreased with a lower TS of 25 mm min ^−1 . A small PD: SD ratioallowed for more symmetrical heat distribution, supported by the hardness map. The ultimate tensile strength decreased with increasing TS, and the highest ultimate strength, reaching 319 MPa, was observed with a 1:1.75 ratio and TS of 25 mm min ^−1 . X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) found an increase in peaks with increasing shoulder diameter and the number of peaks increased with decreasing travel speeds.

In this paper, the lubrication behavior of resin during the molding process of unidirectional prepreg materials was scrutinized using a custom-made device. The thickness of the resin between prepregs under various conditions was calculated using Inverse Hydrodynamic Lubrication (IHL) theory to elucidate the lubrication mechanism. This calculation was confirmed by examining the surface morphologies of the prepreg and employing Digital Image Correlation (DIC) techniques for validation. Furthermore, the effect of unidirectional fiber orientation on the process of inter-ply sliding was quantitatively analyzed through the combined roughness. The study showed that factors such as sliding velocity, normal pressure, and fiber orientation play a key role in the lubrication mechanism. The lubrication behavior of unidirectional prepreg transformed to mixed lubrication under specific conditions. The results in our study of the lubrication mechanism have significant implications for the refinement of molding process and the enhancement of numerical simulations of unidirectional prepregs.
