This numerical study attempts to discuss about the effects in vortex shedding and aerodynamic parameters due to heating the top surface of a square cylinder for various Ri values (0 < Ri < 1) at Pr = 0.71 and Re = 100. Numerical calculations are carried out using a finite volume method based on the PISO (Pressure-Implicit with Splitting of Operators) algorithm. We have used ANSYS Fluent for the numerical simulation. The results in this study are promising and we found that the surface heating would rather changes or modifies the flow field and the vortex shedding phenomenon behind the square cylinder. Also it is observed that heating plays a critical role in the integral quantities such as aerodynamic coefficients, Strouhal number etc.

This work deals with the numerical simulation of square cylinder with different rounded corners and numerical analysis of convective heat transfer is studied, here emphasis is being laid on both type of flow regime i.e. unsteady flow regime and steady flow regime i.e. between 40 ⩽ Re.⩽ 160 and Pr is kept as 0.7 and thus the finding suggests that the heat transfer increases significantly with rounded corners in square cylinder.

This study investigates the effectiveness of a new technique to optimize aerodynamic responses of square cylinder by corner modification. The corner of the square cylinder was modified by introducing a small inclined opening which was measured in terms of corner point dislocation. Four specific opening widths (normalized with the depth of the cylinder) viz. 0.02, 0.08, 0.12 and 0.18 were considered. The normalized length of the inclined opening was 0.05 for all cases. The aerodynamic responses of these four modified square cylinders are compared with the unmodified square cylinder. Direct Numerical simulation was utilized to predict the aerodynamic responses and the flow filed. Second order accuracy was maintained both in space and time. The Reynolds number was kept constant at 100. The mean and RMS values of the force coefficients are calculated and compared. The flow filed is analyzed in terms of vorticity filed, mean flow streamlines and after-body wake characteristics. Due to corner modification, a drag reduction of approximately 5% is achieved for square cylinder with corner opening. Along with the separated flow, the corner opening affected the wake of the cylinder as well. Square cylinder with corner opening had different wake characteristics as compared to the unmodified cylinder.

In current study the numerical experiments have been conducted to elucidate the role of Richardson number and free-stream orientations on the flow dynamics and aerodynamic parameters for the conditions (Re = 140, 0 ⩽ Ri ⩽ 1.2, 0o ⩽α ⩽ 45o, ϕ = 0oand Pr = 0.71). The flow around a heated square cylinder is assumed to be two-dimensional. Also the flow is unsteady, incompressible, viscous and laminar unconfined flow. Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is utilized to consider the effects of buoyancy. To discretize the momentum and energy equations finite difference method is employed. Implicit pressure correction scheme is utilized to solve the equations. The flow is found to be unsteady periodic flow for the selected range of parameters except at α=0º and 0.4 ⩽ Ri ⩽ 1.2. The heat transfer rate is observed maximum from the front face(s) of square cylinder. Mean lift coefficient at α=0º is zero for every Richardson number chosen. For chosen free-stream orientations mean lift coefficient is zero at Ri = 0.0. Mean drag coefficient increases with increasing Reynolds and/or Richardson numbers.
