We present the discovery of three pulsars in the globular cluster (GC) M15 (NGC 7078) by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope. PSR J2129+1210J (M15J) is a millisecond pulsar with a spin period of 11.84 ms and a dispersion measure of 66.68 pc cm ^−3 . Both PSR J2129+1210K and L (M15K and L) are long-period pulsars with spin periods of 1928 ms and 3961 ms, respectively. M15L is the GC pulsar with the longest spin period known. We update the timing solutions of M15A to M15H. As predicted by A. Ridolfi et al., the flux density of M15C keeps decreasing, and the latest detection in our data set was on 2022 December 20. We have also detected M15I’s signal for the first time since its discovery. Current timing suggests that it is an isolated pulsar.

We present the discovery of eight isolated millisecond pulsars in globular cluster (GC) NGC 6517 using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The spin periods of those pulsars (namely PSR J1801–0857K to R, or NGC 6517K to R) are all shorter than 10 ms. With these discoveries, NGC 6517 is currently the GC with the most known pulsars in the FAST sky. The largest difference in dispersion measure of the pulsars in NGC 6517 is 11.2 cm ^−3 pc, the second among all GCs. The fraction of isolated pulsars in this GC (16 of 17, 94%) is consistent with previous studies indicating an overabundance of isolated pulsars in the densest GCs, especially in those undergoing cluster core collapse. Considering the FAST GC pulsar discoveries, we modeled the GC pulsar population using the empirical Bayesian method described by Turk and Lorimer with the recent counts. Using this approach, we find that the expected number of potential pulsars in GCs seems to be correlated with the central escape velocity; hence, the GCs Liller 1, NGC 6441, M54 (NGC 6715), and ω -Cen (NGC 5139) are expected to host the largest numbers of pulsars.

We present cosmological constraints from the sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) discovered and measured during the full 5 yr of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) SN program. In contrast to most previous cosmological samples, in which SNe are classified based on their spectra, we classify the DES SNe using a machine learning algorithm applied to their light curves in four photometric bands. Spectroscopic redshifts are acquired from a dedicated follow-up survey of the host galaxies. After accounting for the likelihood of each SN being an SN Ia, we find 1635 DES SNe in the redshift range 0.10 < z < 1.13 that pass quality selection criteria sufficient to constrain cosmological parameters. This quintuples the number of high-quality z > 0.5 SNe compared to the previous leading compilation of Pantheon+ and results in the tightest cosmological constraints achieved by any SN data set to date. To derive cosmological constraints, we combine the DES SN data with a high-quality external low-redshift sample consisting of 194 SNe Ia spanning 0.025 < z < 0.10. Using SN data alone and including systematic uncertainties, we find Ω _M = 0.352 ± 0.017 in flat ΛCDM. SN data alone now require acceleration ( q _0 < 0 in ΛCDM) with over 5 σ confidence. We find $({{\rm{\Omega }}}_{{\rm{M}}},w)=({0.264}_{-0.096}^{+0.074},-{0.80}_{-0.16}^{+0.14})$ in flat w CDM. For flat w _0 w _a CDM, we find $({{\rm{\Omega }}}_{{\rm{M}}},{w}_{0},{w}_{a})=({0.495}_{-0.043}^{+0.033},-{0.36}_{-0.30}^{+0.36},-{8.8}_{-4.5}^{+3.7})$ , consistent with a constant equation of state to within ∼2 σ . Including Planck cosmic microwave background, Sloan Digital Sky Survey baryon acoustic oscillation, and DES 3 × 2pt data gives (Ω _M , w ) = (0.321 ± 0.007, −0.941 ± 0.026). In all cases, dark energy is consistent with a cosmological constant to within ∼2 σ . Systematic errors on cosmological parameters are subdominant compared to statistical errors; these results thus pave the way for future photometrically classified SN analyses.

We report the first detection of polarization angle orthogonal jumps, a phenomenon previously only observed from radio pulsars, from a fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20201124A. We find three cases of orthogonal jumps in over 2000 bursts, all resembling those observed in pulsar single pulses. We propose that the jumps are due to the superposition of two orthogonal emission modes that could only be produced in a highly magnetized plasma, and they are caused by the line of sight sweeping across a rotating magnetosphere. The shortest jump timescale is of the order of 1 millisecond, which hints that the emission modes come from regions smaller than the light cylinder of most pulsars or magnetars. This discovery provides convincing evidence that FRB emission originates from the complex magnetosphere of a magnetar, suggesting an FRB emission mechanism that is analogous to radio pulsars despite a huge luminosity difference between two types of objects.

We present early-phase good-cadence (hour-to-day) simultaneous multiband ( ugi and vrz bands) imaging of the nearby supernova SN 2024ggi, which exploded in the nearby galaxy NGC 3621. A quick follow-up was conducted within less than a day after the explosion and continued for ∼23 days. The uvg band light curves display a rapid rise (∼1.4 mag day ^−1 ) to maximum in ∼4 days and absolute magnitude M _g ∼ −17.75 mag. The postpeak decay rate in redder bands is ∼0.01 mag day ^−1 . Different colors (e.g., u − g and v − r ) of SN 2024ggi are slightly redder than SN 2023ixf. A significant rise (∼12.5 kK) in blackbody temperature (optical) was noticed within ∼2 days after the explosion, which successively decreased, indicating shock break out inside a dense circumstellar medium surrounding the progenitor. Using semianalytical modeling, the ejecta mass and progenitor radius were estimated as 1.2 M _☉ and ∼550 R _☉ . The archival deep images ( g , r , i , and z bands) from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey were examined, and a possible progenitor was detected in each band (∼22–22.5 mag) and had a mass range of 14–17 M _☉ .

Magnetic reconnection and current disruption are two key processes in driving energy conversion and dissipation in planetary magnetospheres. At the Earth, the two processes usually occur at different locations: the current disruption process occurs more frequently in the near-Earth magnetotail ∼10 R _E , while the magnetotail reconnection process is expected to take place in the more distant region where the current sheet is thinner. Occasionally, under very intense solar wind perturbations, reconnection could be located closer to the Earth where current disruption processes usually operate. But it is unclear what the situation is at giant planets, in which the plasma environment is very different from the Earth. In this study, we investigate a middle-Jupiter reconnection event at ∼43 R _J . During the event, the inferred integrated cross-field currents were substantially reduced, which we argue is a signature of current disruption. In this case, we suggest that magnetic reconnection could be colocated with a current disruption process in the Jovian magnetosphere, which is roughly analogous to the situation in the extremely perturbed Earth’s magnetosphere.

Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) are extragalactic bursts of soft X-rays first identified ≳10 yr ago. Since then, nearly 40 events have been discovered, although almost all of these have been recovered from archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data. To date, optical sky surveys and follow-up searches have not revealed any multiwavelength counterparts. The Einstein Probe, launched in 2024 January, has started surveying the sky in the soft X-ray regime (0.5–4 keV) and will rapidly increase the sample of FXTs discovered in real time. Here we report the first discovery of both an optical and radio counterpart to a distant FXT, the fourth source publicly released by the Einstein Probe. We discovered a fast-fading optical transient within the 3′ localization radius of EP 240315a with the all-sky optical survey ATLAS, and our follow-up Gemini spectrum provides a redshift, z = 4.859 ± 0.002. Furthermore, we uncovered a radio counterpart in the S band (3.0 GHz) with the MeerKAT radio interferometer. The optical (rest-frame UV) and radio luminosities indicate that the FXT most likely originates from either a long gamma-ray burst or a relativistic tidal disruption event. This may be a fortuitous early mission detection by the Einstein Probe or may signpost a mode of discovery for high-redshift, high-energy transients through soft X-ray surveys, combined with locating multiwavelength counterparts.

We present a measurement of the low-mass quiescent size–mass relation at cosmic noon (1 < z < 3) from the JWST PRIMER and UNCOVER treasury surveys, which highlights two distinct classes of quiescent galaxies. While the massive population is well studied at these redshifts, the low-mass end has been previously underexplored due to a lack of observing facilities with sufficient sensitivity and spatial resolution. We select a conservative sample of low-mass quiescent galaxy candidates using rest-frame UVJ colors and specific star formation rate criteria and measure galaxy morphology in both rest-frame UV/optical wavelengths (F150W) and rest-frame near-infrared (F444W). We confirm an unambiguous flattening of the low-mass quiescent size–mass relation, which results from the separation of the quiescent galaxy sample into two distinct populations at $\mathrm{log}({M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot })\sim 10.3$ : low-mass quiescent galaxies that are notably younger and have disky structures, and massive galaxies consistent with spheroidal morphologies and older median stellar ages. These separate populations imply mass quenching dominates at the massive end while other mechanisms, such as environmental or feedback-driven quenching, form the low-mass end. This stellar mass-dependent slope of the quiescent size–mass relation could also indicate a shift from size growth due to star formation (low masses) to growth via mergers (massive galaxies). The transition mass between these two populations also corresponds with other dramatic changes and characteristic masses in several galaxy evolution scaling relations (e.g., star formation efficiency, dust obscuration, and stellar-to-halo mass ratios), further highlighting the stark dichotomy between low-mass and massive galaxy formation.

We present the first polarimetric analysis of quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in a black hole binary utilizing IXPE data. Our study focuses on Swift J1727.8–1613, which experienced a massive outburst that was observed by various telescopes across different wavelengths. The IXPE observation we studied was conducted during the hard-intermediate state. The polarization degree (PD) and polarization angle (PA) were measured at 4.28% ± 0.20% and 1.°9 ± 1.°4, respectively. Remarkably, significant QPO signals were detected during this observation, with a QPO frequency of approximately 1.34 Hz and a fractional rms amplitude of about 12.3%. Furthermore, we conducted a phase-resolved analysis of the QPO using the Hilbert–Huang transform technique. The photon index showed a strong modulation with respect to the QPO phase. In contrast, the PD and PA exhibit no modulations in relation to the QPO phase, which is inconsistent with the expectation of the Lense–Thirring precession of the inner flow. Further theoretical studies are needed to conform with the observational results.

Stars that formed with an initial mass of over 50 M _⊙ are very rare today, but they are thought to be more common in the early Universe. The fates of those early, metal-poor, massive stars are highly uncertain. Most are expected to directly collapse to black holes, while some may explode as a result of rotationally powered engines or the pair-creation instability. We present the chemical abundances of J0931+0038, a nearby low-mass star identified in early follow-up of the SDSS-V Milky Way Mapper, which preserves the signature of unusual nucleosynthesis from a massive star in the early Universe. J0931+0038 has a relatively high metallicity ([Fe/H] = −1.76 ± 0.13) but an extreme odd–even abundance pattern, with some of the lowest known abundance ratios of [N/Fe], [Na/Fe], [K/Fe], [Sc/Fe], and [Ba/Fe]. The implication is that a majority of its metals originated in a single extremely metal-poor nucleosynthetic source. An extensive search through nucleosynthesis predictions finds a clear preference for progenitors with initial mass >50 M _⊙ , making J0931+0038 one of the first observational constraints on nucleosynthesis in this mass range. However, the full abundance pattern is not matched by any models in the literature. J0931+0038 thus presents a challenge for the next generation of nucleosynthesis models and motivates the study of high-mass progenitor stars impacted by convection, rotation, jets, and/or binary companions. Though rare, more examples of unusual early nucleosynthesis in metal-poor stars should be found in upcoming large spectroscopic surveys.

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (∼1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high β _P has been significantly extended ( H _98y2 > 1.3, β _P ∼ 4.0, β _N ∼ 2.4 and n _e / n _GW ∼ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q _95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. The sustained large ELM control and stable partial detachment have been achieved with Ne seeding. The underlying physics of plasma-beta effect for error field penetration, where toroidal effect dominates, is disclosed by comparing the results in cylindrical theory and MARS-Q simulation in EAST. We present the phase-connected timing solutions of all five pulsars in globular cluster M3 (NGC 5272), namely PSRs M3A to F (PSRs J1342+2822A to F), with the exception of PSR M3C, from FAST archival data. In these timing solutions, those of PSRs M3E and F are obtained for the first time. We find that PSRs M3E and F have low-mass companions and are in circular orbits with periods of 7.1 and 3.0 days, respectively. For PSR M3C, we have not detected its signal in all 41 observations. We found no X-ray counterparts for these pulsars in archival Chandra images in the band of 0.2–20 keV. From the autocorrelation function analysis of M3A and M3B’s dynamic spectra, the scintillation timescale ranges from 7.0 ± 0.3 to 60.0 ± 0.6 minutes, and the scintillation bandwidth ranges from 4.6 ± 0.2 to 57.1 ± 1.1 MHz. The measured scintillation bandwidths from the dynamic spectra indicate strong scintillation, and the scattering medium is anisotropic. From the secondary spectra, we captured a scintillation arc only for PSR M3B with a curvature of 649 ± 23 m ^−1 mHz ^−2 .

With the rapid development of quantum technology, the growing manipulated Hilbert space makes learning the dynamics of the quantum system a significant challenge. Machine learning technique has brought apparent advantages in some learning strategies, therefore, we introduce it to indirect learning in this paper. Based on Choi–Jamiolkowski isomorphism, we propose a protocol that learns the dynamics of an inaccessible quantum system using a quantum device at hand. For an n -qubit system, the learning task can be done iteratively, with operational complexity $\mathcal{O}(\text{poly}(n, L)/\epsilon^2)$ in each iteration, where L is the circuit depth and ε is the measurement error. Then we theoretically prove its noise resilience to global depolarization, state preparation and measurement noise, and unitary noise in gates implementation, where we find the learned dynamics stay invariant. Finally, we investigate the protocol experimentally on a nitrogen-vacancy center system with a natural noise source. The results show that the behavior of a relatively intractable nuclear spin can be learned through an easily accessible electron spin under different noise models, demonstrating the protocol’s feasibility.

Metal halide (MH) scintillators serve as a compelling substitute for traditional scintillators in x-ray detection and imaging due to their low-temperature fabrication process, high light yield and mechanical flexibility. Nevertheless, the spatial resolution and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these films are hindered by the agglomeration and uneven distribution of MHs crystal particles during the fabrication process. We introduce a modified fabrication approach for MH scintillator films involving an additional step of ethyl acetate (EA) treatment, resulting in the preparation of a smooth EA-treated (Ph4P)2MnBr4/Polydimethylsiloxane film (Ph4P = Tetraphenylphosphonium). The carbonyl groups within EA interact with elements of the (Ph4P)2MnBr4 microcrystals powder, ensuring uniform dispersion and preventing agglomeration. The EA-treated composite film demonstrates a remarkable PLQY of approximately 95.8% and an impressive spatial resolution of 14 lp mm−1, with enhanced stability under harsh environments. These characteristics ensure its suitability as a high-performance x-ray imaging scintillator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
