Toward real-time wall conditioning, impurity powder dropping experiments with boron powder were performed in the 22nd experimental campaign of the Large Helical Device. To examine the deposition and desorption process of boron, we focus on boron hydride (BH) molecules which presumably populate near plasma-facing components. We performed spatially-resolved spectroscopic measurements of emission by boron ions and BH molecules. From the measurement, we found that BH and B+ were concentrated on the divertor viewing chord, which suggest boron deposition in the divertor region. By comparing Hγ emissions with and without boron injection, neutral hydrogen shows uniform reduction in the SOL region, whereas less reduction of neutral hydrogen is confirmed in the divertor region. Although emissions from BH and B+ increased linearly, emissions by B0 and B4+ became constant after the middle of the discharge. Continuous reduction of carbon density in the core plasma was confirmed even after B0 and B4+ became constant. The results may show reduction of hydrogen recycling and facilitation of impurity gettering by boron in the divertor region and thus effective real-time wall conditioning.

Controlled particulate injections from the PPPL impurity powder dropper (IPD) into the Large Helical Device have demonstrated positive effects on the wall conditions on both an intra and inter-shot basis. Injections over a range of densities, input powers, pulse lengths, heating schemes, injection quantities and main ion species show conclusive evidence of improvement to plasma wall conditions. Successful injections are confirmed by both spectroscopic measurements as well as real-time visible camera signals. In 7 s long plasmas the responses include a reduction in wall recycling as well as a reduction in native impurity content as observed over the course of several discharges. For plasmas longer than 40 s, improvements to the recycling rate and increased impurity control are observed in real time as a consequence of the extended particulate injections. These experiments demonstrate the extended applicability of this solid particulate conditioning technique to the control and maintenance of the plasma wall conditions. In addition they are an important initial step in the development of the real-time boronization technique as a supplement to standard conditioning scenarios.

Tritium (T) retention characteristics in dust collected from the divertor in JET with ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) after the third campaign in 2015–2016 (ILW-3) have been examined in individual dust particles by combining radiography (tritium imaging plate technique) and electron probe micro-analysis. The results are summarized and compared with the data obtained after the first campaign in 2011–2012 (ILW-1). The dominant component in ILW-1 dust was carbon (C) originating from tungsten-coated carbon fibre composite (CFC) tiles in JET-ILW divertor and/or legacy of C dust after the JET operation with carbon wall. Around 85% of the total tritium retention in ILW-1 dust was attributed to the C dust. The retention in tungsten (W) and beryllium (Be) dominated particles was 100 times smaller than the highest T retention in carbon-based particles. After ILW-3 the main component contributing to the T retention was W. The number of small W particles with T increased, in comparison to ILW-1, most probably by the exfoliation and fragmentation of W coatings on CFC tiles though T retention in individual W particles was smaller than in C particles. The detection of only very few Be-dominated dust particles found after ILW-1 and ILW-3 could imply stable Be deposits on the divertor tiles.

Achieving steady-state plasma operation at high plasma temperatures is one of the important goals of worldwide magnetic fusion research. High temperatures of approximately 1–2 keV, and steady-state plasma sustainment operations have been reported. Recently the steady-state operation regime was greatly extended in the Large Helical Device (LHD). A high-temperature plasma was created and maintained for 54 min with 1.6 GJ in the 2005FY experimental programme. The three-dimensional heat-deposition profile of the LHD helical divertor was modified, and during long-pulse discharges it effectively dispersed the heat load using a magnetic axis swing technique developed at the LHD. A sweep of only 3 cm in the major radius of the magnetic axis position (less than 1% of the major radius of the LHD) was enough to disperse the divertor heat load. The steady-state plasma was heated and sustained mainly by hydrogen minority ion heating using ion cyclotron range of frequencies and partially by electron cyclotron of fundamental resonance frequency. By accumulating the small flux of charge-exchanged neutral particles during the long-pulse operation, a high energy ion tail which extended up to 1.6 MeV was observed. This is the first experimental evidence of high energetic ion confinement of MeV range in helical devices. The long-pulse operations lasted until a sudden increase in radiation loss occurred, presumably because of metal wall flakes dropping into the plasma. The sustained line-averaged electron density and temperature were approximately 0.8 × 1019 m−3and 2 keV, respectively, at a 1.3 GJ discharge (#53776) and 0.4 × 1019 m−3and 1 keV at a 1.6 GJ discharge (#66053). The average input power was 680 kW and 490 kW, and the plasma duration was 32 min and 54 min, respectively. These successful long operations show that the heliotron configuration has a high potential as a steady-state fusion reactor.

A few new results of oxidation wall conditionings for deposits removal and hydrogen release were directly obtained on exposure of co-deposited films to O-ICR or O-GDC plasmas in HT-7. After the O-ICR or O-GDC treatments, the deposits were partially removed and deuterium retention was reduced. D2 release from samples was reduced by a factor of 2–3, and the ratio of D/C decreased whereas that of O/C increased. The removal rates of C in various oxidation wall conditionings were about 1018–1019C m−2 min−1, which approached the estimated carbon deposited rates, of about 5.2 × 1018C m−2 min−1, on the tested samples. The He/O-ICR was more effective on the deposits removal and hydrogen (deuterium) release than O-GDC. And O-ICR was more effective on the surface facing main plasma than on that facing SOL plasma, whereas O-GDC possibly has uniform effectivity on both tested surfaces.

Steady state divertor operation with high performance plasmas (ne ~ 0.7 × 1019 cm−3, Ti ~ 2 keV) was demonstrated for half an hour in the Large Helical Device (LHD), the superconducting helical device (R = 3.6–3.9 m, a = 0.6 m, B = 3 T, l/m = 2/10). The high performance plasmas have been sustained with an averaged heating power of 680 kW and achieved an injected energy of 1.3 GJ. This required both advanced technological integration of heating systems and divertor heat flux control. In particular, optimization of divertor heat flux distribution along the divertor leg trace on divertor plates and real-time magnetic axis sweeping (R = 3.67–3.7 m) have allowed LHD to access a steady state regime with a margin of safety for the actively cooled divertor plates. The distribution of divertor heat load along the traces was investigated with calorimetric measurements and it was found that there was a localized heat load connected with the loss of high-energy ions produced by ion cyclotron radio frequency near-fields. Orbit analysis shows that the behaviour of high-energy ions is qualitatively in good agreement with the experimental result. Long-pulse discharges were terminated by radiation collapse due to penetration of metallic flakes into the plasma.

Self-sustained detachment has been obtained in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Strong hydrogen gas puffing of ~200 Pa m3 s−1 after a density feedback phase detaches the plasma from the divertor plates with high reproducibility. High electron density of over 1 × 1020 m−3 is sustained without gas puffing until the heating beam stops and a high-density flat top for 2 s has been demonstrated. Throughout the self-sustained detachment phase, the minor radius of the hot plasma column shrinks to ~90% of the last-closed-flux-surface, which corresponds to the rational surface. This new state has been named the 'Serpens mode', for self-regulated plasma edge 'neath the last-closed-flux-surface. Global energy confinement of the Serpens mode is compared with the international stellarator scaling 1995 (ISS95) and the recently established scaling for high-density LHD plasmas (HD scaling), where shrinking confinement volume and shallow penetration of the heating beams are taken into account. Although the energy confinement of the Serpens mode seems deteriorated compared with ISS95, as in the case of high-density attached plasmas, it is consistent with the HD scaling. This suggests that the energy confinement properties of detached plasmas in LHD are similar to those in high-density attached plasmas.

A long-pulse plasma discharge of more than 30 min duration was achieved on the Large Helical Device (LHD). A plasma of ne = 0.8 × 1019 m−3 and Ti0 = 2.0 keV was sustained with PICH = 0.52 MW, PECH = 0.1 MW and averaged PNBI = 0.067 MW. The total injected heating energy was 1.3 GJ. One of the keys to the success of the experiment was a dispersion of the local plasma heat load to divertors, accomplished by sweeping the magnetic axis inward and outward. Causes limiting the long pulse plasma discharge are discussed. An ion impurity penetration limited further long-pulse discharge in the 8th experimental campaign (2004).

A long-pulse plasma discharge for more than 30 min. was achieved on the Large Helical Device (LHD). A plasma of ne = 0.8× 1019 m−3 and Ti0 = 2.0 keV was sustained with PICH = 0.52 MW, PECH = 0.1 MW and averaged PNBI = 0.067 MW. Total injected heating energy was 1.3 GJ, which was a quarter of the prepared RF heating energy. One of the keys to the success of the experiment was a dispersion of the local plasma heat load to divertors, accomplished by shifting the magnetic axis inward and outward.

Glow discharge cleaning (GDC) is a widely used technique for wall conditioning in fusion experimental devices. Though the cleaning effects of GDC are essentially related to the microscopic modification of the wall surface, there are few reports about it. In the present study, specimens of wall materials were exposed to GDC plasma of helium, hydrogen and neon in the Large Helical Device (LHD) by using the retractable material probe transfer system and irradiation damage was examined by transmission electron microscopy to understand the underlying microscopic mechanism of GDC. In the case of Ne-GDC, the specimen surface was covered with a thick deposited layer of Fe and Cr but no radiation induced defects were observed. Due to the high sputtering efficiency and very shallow penetration, it is likely that neon atoms effectively sputter the surface contamination without leaving serious damage or remaining in the sub-surface region. After the Ne-GDC phase, retained Ne can be successfully removed by the following short hydrogen GDC. It was shown that a two-step GDC with Ne and H is very effective to clean the metallic surface of the LHD.

The Large Helical Device is a heliotron device with L = 2 and M = 10 continuous helical coils with a major radius of 3.5–4.1 m, a minor radius of 0.6 m and a toroidal field of 0.5–3 T, which is a candidate among toroidal magnetic confinement systems for a steady state thermonuclear fusion reactor. There has been significant progress in extending the plasma operational regime in various plasma parameters by neutral beam injection with a power of 13 MW and electron cyclotron heating (ECH) with a power of 2 MW. The electron and ion temperatures have reached up to 10 keV in the collisionless regime, and the maximum electron density, the volume averaged beta value and stored energy are 2.4 × 1020 m−3, 4.1% and 1.3 MJ, respectively. In the last two years, intensive studies of the magnetohydrodynamics stability providing access to the high beta regime and of healing of the magnetic island in comparison with the neoclassical tearing mode in tokamaks have been conducted. Local island divertor experiments have also been performed to control the edge plasma aimed at confinement improvement. As for transport study, transient transport analysis was executed for a plasma with an internal transport barrier and a magnetic island. The high ion temperature plasma was obtained by adding impurities to the plasma to keep the power deposition to the ions reasonably high even at a very low density. By injecting 72 kW of ECH power, the plasma was sustained for 756 s without serious problems of impurities or recycling.

High-Z plasmas have been produced with Ar and/or Ne gas fuelling to increase the ion temperature in Large Helical Device (LHD) plasmas heated with high-energy negative-ion-based neutral beam injection (NBI). Although the electron heating is dominant in the high-energy NBI heating, the direct ion heating power is significantly enhanced in low-density plasmas due to both an increase in the beam absorption (ionization) power and a reduction of the ion density in the high-Z plasmas. Intensive neon- and/or argon-glow discharge cleaning works well to suppress dilution of the high-Z plasmas with wall-absorbed hydrogen. As a result, the ion temperature increases with an increase in the ion heating power normalized by the ion density and reaches 10 keV. An increase in the ion temperature is also observed with the addition of centrally focused electron cyclotron resonance heating to a low-density and high-Z NBI plasma, suggesting improvement of the ion transport. The results obtained in the high-Z plasma experiments with high-energy NBI heating suggest that an increase in the direct ion heating power and improvement of the ion transport are essential to ion temperature rise, and that a high-ion temperature could be obtained as well in hydrogen plasmas with low-energy positive-NBI heating which is planned in the near future in the LHD.

Characteristics of MHD instabilities and their impacts on plasma confinement are studied in current free plasmas of the Large Helical Device. Spontaneous L?H transition is often observed in high beta plasmas close to 2% at low toroidal fields (Bt ? 0.75?T). The stored energy starts to rise rapidly just after the transition accompanying the clear rise in the electron density but quickly saturates due to the growth of the m = 2/n = 3 mode (m and n: poloidal and toroidal mode numbers), the rational surface of which is located in the edge barrier region, and edge localized mode (ELM) like activities having fairly small amplitude but high repetition frequency. Even in low beta plasmas without L?H transitions, ELM-like activities are sometimes induced in high performance plasmas with a steep edge pressure gradient and transiently reduce the stored energy up to 10%. Energetic ion driven MHD modes such as Alfv?n eigenmodes (AEs) are studied in a very wide range of characteristic parameters (the averaged beta of energetic ions, ?b?, and the ratio of energetic ion velocity to the Alfv?n velocity, Vb?/VA), of which range includes all tokamak data. In addition to the observation of toroidicity induced AEs (TAEs), coherent magnetic fluctuations of helicity induced AEs (HAEs) have been detected for the first time in NBI heated plasmas. The transition of a core-localized TAE to a global AE (GAE) is also observed in a discharge with temporal evolution of the rotational transform profile, having a similarity to the phenomenon observed in a reversed shear tokamak. At low magnetic fields, bursting TAEs transiently induce a significant loss of energetic ions, up to 40% of injected beams, but on the other hand play an important role in triggering the formation of transport barriers in the core and edge regions.

Standard diagnostics for fundamental plasma parameters and for plasma physics are routinely utilized for daily operation and physics studies in the large helical device (LHD) with high reliability. Diagnostics for steady-state plasma are under intensive development, especially for Te, ne (yttrium–aluminium garnet (YAG) laser Thomson, CO2 laser polarimeter), data acquisition in steady-state and heat-resistant probes. To clarify the plasma properties of the helical structure, two- or three-dimensional diagnostics are being aggressively developed: tangential cameras (fast SX TV, photon counting CCD, Hα TV); tomography (tangential SX CCD, bolometer); imaging (bolometer, ECE, reflectometer). Divertor and edge physics are important key issues for steady-state operation. Diagnostics for neutral flux (Hα array, Zeeman spectroscopy) and ne (fast scanning probe, Li beam probe, pulsed radar reflectometer) are also in advanced stages of development. In addition to these, advanced diagnostics are being intensively developed in LHD through domestic and international collaborations.

Significant progress has been made with ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating in the Large Helical Device. This is mainly due to better confinement of the helically trapped particles and less accumulation of impurities in the region of the plasma core. During the past two years, ICRF heating power has been increased from 1.35 to 2.7 MW. Various wave-mode tests were carried out using minority-ion heating, second-harmonic heating, slow-wave heating and high-density fast-wave heating at the fundamental cyclotron frequency. This fundamental heating mode extended the plasma density range of effective ICRF heating to a value of 1×1020 m−3. This use of the heating mode was its first successful application in large fusion devices. Using the minority-ion mode gave the best performance, and the stored energy reached 240 kJ using ICRF alone. This was obtained for the inward-shifted magnetic axis configuration. The improvement associated with the axis-shift was common for both bulk plasma and highly accelerated particles. For the minority-ion mode, high-energy ions up to 500 keV were observed by concentrating the heating power near the plasma axis. The confinement properties of high-energy particles were studied for different magnetic axis configurations, using the power-modulation technique. It confirmed that with the inward-shifted configuration the confinement of high-energy particles was better than with the normal configuration. By increasing the distance of the plasma to the vessel wall to about 2 cm, the impurity influx was sufficiently reduced to allow sustainment of the plasma with ICRF heating alone for more than 2 min.

Internal transport barriers with respect to electron thermal transport (eITB) were observed in the large helical device, when the electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECH) power was highly localized on the centre of a plasma sustained by neutral beam injection. The eITB is characterized by a high central electron temperature of 6–8 keV with an extremely steep gradient, as high as 55 keV m−1 and a low electron thermal diffusivity within a normalized average radius ρ≈0.3 as well as by the existence of clear thresholds for the ECH power and plasma collisionality.

Bolometer diagnostics are installed on the Large Helical Device (LHD) to provide measurements of the total (broad spectrum) electromagnetic radiation emitted by the plasma. Three types of detectors are used: resistive metal film bolometers, absolute extreme ultraviolet photodiodes and infrared imaging video bolometers. Details of the installation in LHD are given for each type of detector. The detector calibration, data analysis and tomography techniques are described and compared and sample results are shown.

The behaviour of high-energy ions accelerated by an ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) electric field in the large helical device (LHD) is discussed. A better confinement performance of high-energy ions in the inward-shifted magnetic axis configuration was experimentally verified by measuring their energy spectrum and comparing it with the effective temperature determined by an electron slowing down process. In the standard magnetic axis configuration a saturation of the measured tail temperature was observed as the effective temperature was increased. The ratio between these two quantities is a measure of the quality of transfer efficiency from high-energy ions to a bulk plasma; when this efficiency was compared with Monte Carlo simulations the results agreed fairly well. The ratio of the stored energy of the high-energy ions to that of the bulk plasma was measured using an ICRF heating power modulation method; it was deduced from phase differences between total and bulk plasma stored energies and the modulated ICRF heating power. The measured high energy fraction agreed with that calculated using the injected ICRF heating power, the transfer efficiency determined in the experiment and the confinement scaling of the LHD plasma.

Binary-collision-approximation-based (BCA-based) simulation is performed for the investigation of the effect of a polycrystalline structure on the penetration depth, absorption rate, and sputtering yield of tungsten materials irradiated by helium plasma. To clarify the possibility of suppressing the generation of helium bubbles in tungsten materials by designing the properties of the polycrystalline structure, such as grain size, the effect of the polycrystalline structure on helium bubble formation is also investigated.

This paper reports on the behaviour of high-energy ions created by ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating on the Large Helical Device (LHD). In the third experimental campaign conducted in 1999, it was found that minority heating has good heating performance, and high-energy particles were observed. In the fourth campaign in 2000, the temporal behaviour of high-energy ions was investigated in the minority heating regime using turnoff or modulation of ICRF power. The time evolution of the high-energy particle distribution was measured using a natural diamond detector (NDD) and a time-of-flight neutral particle analyser (TOF-NPA). It was found that the count number of higher-energy particles declines faster than that of lower-energy particles after ICRF turnoff. In the modulation experiments, the phase difference of the flux of high-energy particles with respect to the ICRF power modulation increased with energy. These results were explained qualitatively by the Fokker-Planck equation with a simple model. The pitch-angle dependence of the distribution function was also measured in the experiment by changing the line of sight of the TOF-NPA, and an anisotropy of the high-energy tail was found. This anisotropy was reproduced by solving the bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck equation. The second harmonic heating was conducted successfully for the first time in the LHD in high-β plasma, and high-energy particles were also detected in this heating regime.

During the first two years of the LHD experiment the following results have been achieved: (i) higher Te (Te(0) = 4.4 keV at ne = 5.3 × 1018 m-3 and Pabs = 1.8 MW); (ii) higher confinement (τE = 0.3 s, Te(0) = 1.1 keV at ne = 6.5 × 1019 m-3 and Pabs = 2.0 MW); (iii) higher stored energy, Wpdia = 880 kJ at B = 2.75 T. High performance plasmas have been realized in the inward shifted magnetic axis configuration (R = 3.6 m) where helical symmetry is recovered and the particle orbit properties are improved by a trade-off of MHD stability properties due to the appearance of a magnetic hill. Energy confinement was systematically higher than that predicted by the International Stellarator Scaling 95 by up to a factor of 1.6 and was comparable with the ELMy H mode confinement capability in tokamaks. This confinement improvement is attributed to configuration control (inward shift of the magnetic axis) and to the formation of a high edge temperature. The average beta value achieved reached 2.4% at B = 1.3 T, the highest beta value ever obtained in a helical device, and so far no degradation of confinement by MHD phenomena has been observed. The inward shifted configuration has also led to successful ICRF minority ion heating. ICRF powers up to 1.3 MW were reliably injected into the plasma without significant impurity contamination, and a plasma with a stored energy of 200 kJ was sustained for 5 s by ICRF alone. As another important result, long pulse discharges of more than 1 min were successfully achieved separately with an NBI heating of 0.5 MW and with an ICRF heating of 0.85 MW.

A power modulation experiment was conducted in the third campaign of the LHD. In a conventional analysis of the modulation experiments, the energy confinement time and heating efficiency are taken as constant, disregarding their dependence on the plasma parameters. In this paper, their dependence on the plasma temperature and heating power is taken into consideration to improve the analysis of the power modulation experiments. Several models, with differing dependence on the plasma parameters, have been examined. There have been several reports suggesting that the transport coefficients obtained from the dynamical method are different from those obtained from power balance analyses. This paper finally concludes that the energy confinement time obtained from the power modulation experiments well agrees with that obtained from the power balance analysis, made including temperature dependence both in energy confinement time and heating efficiency.

The ICRF heating experiments conducted in 1999 in the third experimental campaign on LHD are reported, with an emphasis on the optimization of the heating regime. Specifically, an exhaustive study of seven different heating regimes was carried out by changing the radiofrequency relative to the magnetic field intensity, and the dependence of the heating efficiency on H minority concentration was investigated. It was found in the experiment that both ion and electron heating are attainable with the same experimental set-up by properly choosing the frequency relative to the magnetic field intensity. In the cases of both electron heating and ion heating, the power absorption efficiency depends on the minority ion concentration. An optimum minority concentration exists in the ion heating case while, in the electron heating case, the efficiency increases with concentration monotonically. A simple model calculation is introduced to provide a heuristic understanding of these experimental results. Among the heating regimes examined in this experiment, one of the ion heating regimes was finally chosen as the optimized heating regime and various high performance discharges were realized with it.

The energy confinement and thermal transport characteristics of net current free plasmas in regimes with much smaller gyroradii and collisionality than previously studied have been investigated in the Large Helical Device (LHD). The inward shifted configuration, which is superior from the point of view of neoclassical transport theory, has revealed a systematic confinement improvement over the standard configuration. Energy confinement times are improved over the International Stellarator Scaling 95 by a factor of 1.6 ±0.2 for an inward shifted configuration. This enhancement is primarily due to the broad temperature profile with a high edge value. A simple dimensional analysis involving LHD and other medium sized heliotrons yields a strongly gyro-Bohm dependence (τEΩ ∝ ρ*-3.8) of energy confinement times. It should be noted that this result is attributed to a comprehensive treatment of LHD for systematic confinement enhancement and that the medium sized heliotrons have narrow temperature profiles. The core stored energy still indicates a dependence of τEΩ ∝ ρ*-2.6 when data only from LHD are processed. The local heat transport analysis of discharges dimensionally similar except for ρ* suggests that the heat conduction coefficient lies between Bohm and gyro-Bohm in the core and changes towards strong gyro-Bohm in the peripheral region. Since the inward shifted configuration has a geometrical feature suppressing neoclassical transport, confinement improvement can be maintained in the collisionless regime where ripple transport is important. The stiffness of the pressure profile coincides with enhanced transport in the peaked density profile obtained by pellet injection.

During experiments in LHD using stainless steel divertor plates, a slow (~1 s) cyclic oscillation in the plasma parameters known as `breathing' plasma was observed during NBI heated long pulse discharges. Using an average ion, corona equilibrium model for the iron impurity cooling rate, the iron impurity density profile is calculated for 0.0

Pellet injection has been used as a primary fuelling scheme in the Large Helical Device. With pellet injection, the operational region of NBI plasmas has been extended to higher densities while maintaining a favourable dependence of energy confinement on density, and several important values, such as plasma stored energy of 0.88?MJ, energy confinement time of 0.3?s, ? of 2.4% at 1.3?T and density of 1.1 ? 1020?m -3, have been achieved. These parameters cannot be attained by gas puffing. Ablation and the subsequent behaviour of the plasma have been investigated. The measured pellet penetration depth estimated on the basis of the duration of the H? emission is shallower than the depth predicted from the simple neutral gas shielding (NGS) model. It can be explained by the NGS model with inclusion of the effect of fast ions on the ablation. Just after ablation, the redistribution of the ablated pellet mass was observed on a short timescale (~400?ms). The redistribution causes shallow deposition and low fuelling efficiency.

An ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating experiment was conducted in the third campaign of LHD in 1999. 1.35 MW of ICRF power were injected into the plasma and 200 kJ of stored energy were obtained, which was maintained for 5 s by ICRF power only after the termination of ECH. The impurity problem was so completely overcome that the pulse length was easily extended to 68 s at a power level of 0.7 MW. The utility of a liquid stub tuner in steady state plasma heating was demonstrated in this discharge. The energy confinement time of the ICRF heated plasma has the same dependences on plasma parameters as those of the ISS95 stellarator scaling with a multiplication factor of 1.5, which is a high efficiency comparable to that of NBI. Such an improvement in performance was obtained by various means, including: (a) scanning of the magnetic field intensity and minority concentration, (b) improvement of particle orbits due to a shift of magnetic axis and (c) reduction of the number of impurity ions by means of titanium gettering and the use of carbon divertor plates. In the optimized heating regime, ion heating turned out to be the dominant heating mechanism, unlike in CHS and W7-AS. Owing to the high quality of the heating and the parameter range being extended far beyond that of previous experiments, the experiment can be regarded as the first complete demonstration of ICRF heating in stellarators.

We have studied contribution of H2 plasma etching to radial profile of amount of dust particles generated due to interactions between H2 plasmas and graphite target in a divertor simulator. Dust fluxes of spherical particles and flakes are the maximum at the distance r = 100 mm and 120 mm from the centre axis of the plasma column, respectively. From ion density and dust flux, we have deduced etched volume of deposited dust particles due to H2 plasma irradiation. Sum of the etched volume and measured volume of spherical dust particles is almost constant for r 120 mm, whereas that of flakes is the maximum at r = 120 mm. H2 plasma etching significantly reduces size of dust particles for r smaller than 100 mm.

In the Large Helical Device (LHD) operated with a metallic (stainless steel) first wall, it is found that the iron density, nFe, at the plasma core is fairly low (nFe ⩽ 108 cm−3) in general neutral beam (NB)-heated discharges, while the iron quickly increases with the appearance of impurity accumulation when a multi-hydrogen ice pellet is injected or the NB input power is largely reduced. Although the highest iron density (nFe ⩽ 1010 cm−3) at the plasma centre in the LHD is observed from such discharges, it suggests a still low iron concentration (nFe/ne

Electrode biasing experiments were carried out in various magnetic configurations on the Large Helical Device (LHD). The transitions of poloidal viscosity, which were accompanied with bifurcation phenomena characterized by a negative resistance in an electrode characteristic, were clearly observed on LHD by the electrode biasing. The critical external driving force required for transition was compared with the local maximum in ion viscosity, and the radial resistivity before the transition also compared with the expected value from a neoclassical theory. The critical driving force increased and the radial resistivity decreased with the major radius of the magnetic axis Rax going outwards. The configuration dependence of the transition condition and the radial resistivity qualitatively agreed with neoclassical theories. The radial electric field and the viscosity were also evaluated by the neoclassical transport code for a non-axisymmetric system, and estimated electrode voltage required for the transition, which was consistent with the experimental results.

The steady-state operation of high-performance plasmas in the Large Helical Device (LHD) has progressed since the 2010 IAEA Conference in Korea by means of a newly installed ion cyclotron heating (ICH) antenna (HAS antenna) and an improved electron cyclotron heating (ECH) system. The HAS antenna can control the launched parallel wave number and heat the core plasma efficiently in the case of dipole mode operation. Understanding of the physics and technology of wave heating, particle and heat flow balances, and plasma?wall interactions in LHD has also improved. The heating power of steady-state ICH and ECH exceeded 1?MW and 500?kW, respectively, and a higher density helium plasma with minority hydrogen ions was maintained using the HAS antenna and new 77?GHz gyrotrons. As a result, plasma performance improved, e.g. electron temperature of more than 2?keV at a density of more than 2???1019?m?3 became possible for more than 1?min. Heat flow balance and particle flux balance of steady-state operation were evaluated. Particle balance analysis indicated that externally fed helium and hydrogen particles were mainly absorbed by the chamber wall and divertor plates, even after the 54?min operation.

The transition to the improved confinement mode by electrode biasing was observed for the first time in the Large Helical Device (LHD). A negative resistance was observed in the confinement mode sustained by the cold electrode biasing. The electrode current showed a clear decrease against an increase in the electrode voltage and was characterized by a hysteresis in the transition phenomena. The decrease in the electrode current suggested an improvement in the radial particle transport. An increase in the energy confinement time and remarkable suppression of density fluctuations, which correspond to the transition, were also observed. These results indicated that the electrode biased plasma in LHD showed similar improvements in confinement to those in the H-mode plasmas in tokamaks and stellarators.

In this paper the effects of an externally produced magnetic island (MI) on the 3D radiation structure in attached and detached plasmas as predicted by the EMC3-EIRENE code are clearly seen in the imaging bolometer (IRVB) data from two different views of the plasma, experimentally confirming the role that the MI plays in the detachment process. With the addition of the MI the carbon radiation profile from the code in a poloidal cross-section becomes more localized near the helical divertor x-points (HDXs). This is reflected in the focusing of the radiation patterns corresponding to the HDX in both the IRVB and code data in images corresponding to the IRVB field of view (FOV). Detachment results in a more asymmetric radiation profile in the poloidal cross-section code data with localized peaks near the HDX and magnetic island x-points (MIXs). The radiation from the MIXs is reflected in strong radiation from the corresponding location in the IRVB FOV from both code and IRVB data. Also the change in the position of the MI results in a change in the position of the localized radiation peak as predicted by the code. However, the relative increase in the radiation from the MIXs is greater in the code data than in the IRVB data for reasons which are so far unknown. Also similar discharges show detachment with the MI, albeit at a lower density than the discharge without the MI. This work confirms the previous conclusions that the MI enhances the localization of the radiation and is conducive to achieving and sustaining the detachment.

Surface modification of a polycrystalline tungsten (W) mirror due to low-energy helium plasma irradiation has been studied in the compact plasma–wall interaction (PWI) simulator APSEDAS. Many fine irregularities of a few μm are generated on the W surface at Ts~1400 K due to He bubble formation. On the other hand, a distinctive change in the surface morphology cannot be seen from the SEM micrograph on a W mirror exposed at Ts

An attractive high-density operational regime which is a so-called internal diffusion barrier (IDB) has been discovered in a helical divertor configuration on the Large Helical Device (LHD). The IDB is characterized by steep density gradients and the plasma profile is divided by the IDB into a high-density core plasma and a low density mantle plasma. The IDB enables the core plasma to access the high-density/high-pressure regime. The attainable central density exceeds 1 × 1021 m−3 and the central pressure reaches ≈1.5 times atmospheric pressure. Core pellet fuelling is absolutely essential for the IDB formation and it is reproducibly obtained by employing intensive multiple-pellet injection. In the IDB core plasma, the particle diffusion coefficient is kept at a considerably low level, 0.05 m2 s−1, in spite of high-density and steep-density gradients whereas an inward particle convection velocity is not observed.

It has been known for a long time that microscopic dust appears in plasmas in fusion devices. Recently it was shown that dust can be responsible for the termination of long- discharges. Also, in ITER-scale experiments dust can pose safety problems related to its chemical activity, tritium retention and radioactive content. In particular, the presence of dust in the vacuum chamber of ITER is one of the main concerns of the ITER licensing process. Here we review recent progress in the understanding of different experimental and theoretical aspects of the physics of dust dynamics and transport in fusion plasmas and discuss the remaining issues.

The stochastic scrape-off layer (SOL) of the helical divertor configuration in LHD exhibits a rather complex field topology where remnant magnetic islands, thin edge surfaces and stochastic field lines coexist. Using the three-dimensional edge transport code package, EMC3-EIRENE, the paper presents a numerical study of the stochastic layer transport, aimed, first of all, at clarifying to what extent the plasma as a fluid is influenced by the stochastic behaviour of the magnetic field lines. Revealed and analysed are the individual roles of different regions of the stochastic layer for plasma, impurity and neutral transport. Topics addressed and discussed are island flattening effects, flow patterns and flow damping, recycling flux suppression, rollover of divertor flux, detachment and Marfe formation and dynamics. Comparisons with experimental results are also presented.

The Large Helical Device (LHD) has employed a graphite helical divertor in a stainless steel vacuum vessel since the beginning of its third experimental campaign in 1999. Initially, installation of the carbon divertor resulted in a dramatic decrease in iron impurities as evidenced by the hollowing out of the radiation profiles and by spectroscopic measurements compared to the previous campaign using a stainless steel divertor. However core radiation and radiation from iron spectral lines gradually increased during the third campaign, which was attributed to sputtering of the stainless steel walls during glow discharge cleaning and redeposition on the carbon divertor tiles. Studies have shown that the graphite tiles were eroded at the divertor leg strike points to a depth of 5 µm during one experimental campaign (~10,000 shots), which is in agreement with numerical calculations using the EDDY code. Carbon is redeposited at and near the strike points along with metallic impurities forming a mixed layer, which may be contributing to iron impurities in the plasma. In LHD radiative collapse resulting from an edge thermal instability caused by radiation of gasses desorbed from the divertor during long pulse discharges terminates the discharge at high density. This radiative collapse is one of the limitations for long pulse discharges up to 150 s.
