We have theoretically and experimentally studied the regime of beatings of counterpropagating waves in a Zeeman ring laser under the action of strong fields of ring permanent magnets on the active medium. We have for the first time calculated and measured the dependences of the frequency bias and the intensity of counterpropagating waves of such a laser on the lasing frequency detuning relative to the frequency of the gain line centre. We have revealed some features in the dependence of the frequency bias on the magnetic field strength, associated with the nonlinearity of the active medium polarisability in strong inhomogeneous magnetic fields.

AC losses undoubtedly increase the burden on the cooling system and affect the overall performance of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables. Therefore, AC losses in HTS cables are important design factors for large-scale HTS equipments. Extensive research has been conducted on straight, densely wound conductors. However, AC losses of bending/circular HTS cable conductors have not been sufficiently studied. In this article, the transport AC losses in a circular HTS conductor coil bended by a conductor on round core (CORC) type cable were investigated using experiments and numerical simulations. The effect of different winding methods was also studied. First, the modeling method of the three-dimensional simulation and the experimental procedures were presented. The simulation results of the straight densely wound conductor (SDWC) and circular densely wound coil (CDWC) were compared with the corresponding experimental results. Finally, the winding method for the CDWC was optimized using both the simulation and experimental approaches. Both the experiments and simulations showed that reducing the tape-to-tape frontal area was able to decrease the transport AC loss, and the results show that the optimum winding angle of the HTS CORC coil was 24.15°. Overall, the modeling and experiments provide useful optimization strategies for designing winding structures of high-performance CORC coils/magnets.

Workers in a production line for synchronous motors occasionally reported tingling sensations or a feeling of numbness in their hands when handling strong permanent magnets. As the magnetic flux density (B) and its gradients along and close to the surface of the permanent magnets were expected to be comparably high and the movements of the workers' hands may therefore cause relevant induction inside the tissue, a detailed dosimetric analysis of the in situ electric field inside the hands (Ei) of the workers was carried out. The time derivate of the magnetic flux density (dB/dt) occurring along the hands was determined based on time domain measurements using a specially developed 'measurement glove' containing 12 Hall sensors. Based on these measurement results temporal peak electric field strength (Ei) induced inside a newly developed high resolution anatomical hand models were numerically computed, using the scalar potential finite difference (SPFD) method. The highest measured dB/dt along the palmar side of the hand was 51.2 T s-1. The corresponding worst case temporal peak value of the maximum of the Ei averaged over 2 × 2 × 2 mm3 in soft tissue was 2.0 V m-1, which is a factor of 1.8 higher than the applicable exposure limit value, but still below the range of 3.8-6.2 V m-1 which is presently assumed the range of lowest stimulation threshold for peripheral nerves. Our analysis did therefore not provide an indication that the perception reported by the workers are due to tissue stimulation in the sense of provoking action potentials.

Trapped-flux magnets comprising stacked superconducting tape constitute a promising development to increase the power density of electrical machines, whilst at the same time keeping the complexity required in their construction in manageable levels that allow their use in applications such as aircraft propulsion. However, the conditions in which superconducting stacks operate inside an electrical motor differ quite significantly from the materials characterization experiments commonly developed to model their behaviour. This work presents the results of studying the applicability of these devices as magnetic flux source in the rotor of synchronous machines considering the influence of whole magnetic circuit. Several aspects are assessed, such as flux harmonics, magnetization, losses and demagnetization. Analytical expressions, which provide limited accuracy but allow fast calculations, are used for this purpose. The results illustrate the different trade-offs that arise during the design of a synchronous electric motor using trapped-flux magnets.

[EN] A plethora of modern technologies rely on permanent magnets for their operation, including many related to the transition towards a sustainable future, such as wind turbines or electric vehicles. Despite the overwhelming superiority of magnets based on rare-earth elements in terms of the magnetic performance, the harmful environmental impact of the mining of these raw materials, their uneven distribution on Earth and various political conflicts among countries leave no option but seeking for rare-earth-free alternatives. The family of the hexagonal ferrites or hexaferrites, and in particular the barium and strontium M-type ferrites (BaFe12O19 and SrFe12O19), are strong candidates for a partial rare-earth magnets substitution, and they are indeed successfully implemented in multiple applications. The manufacturing of hexaferrites into dense pieces (i.e. magnets) meeting the requirements of the specific application (e.g. magnetic and mechanical properties, shape) is not always straightforward, which has in many cases hampered the actual substitution at the industrial level. [EN] We address the detailed description of the magnetic properties of the (001) and (111) interfaces between the hard CoFe2O4 (CFO) and soft NiFe2O4 spinel ferrites, used in bicomponent systems for permanent magnet applications. The similarity between the electronic properties, magnetic order and lattice structure of both oxides allows us to isolate the effect of ideal interface formation on the magnetism of the combined system based on density functional theory. While the magnetic moments and long-range magnetic order preserve bulk-like values, the magnetic anisotropy is reduced by the presence of the interface, and depends on the specific termination. Partial inversion of CFO is also relevant, as it enhances the net magnetization and alters both the magnitude and spatial dependence of the magnetic anisotropy., This work has been financed by the European Commission under Grant H2020 No. 720853 (Amphibian) and by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under Grant RTI2018-097895-C41. In this work, we propose a new concept of a high gradient trapped field magnet (HG-TFM). The HG-TFM is made from (RE)BaCuO bulk superconductors, in which slit ring bulks (slit-TFMs) are tightly stacked with TFM cylinders (full-TFMs), and state-of-the-art numerical simulations were used to investigate the magnetic and mechanical properties in detail during and after magnetization. A maximum value of the magnetic field gradient product of B z ��� d B z / d z = 6040 T2 m���1 was obtained after conventional field cooled magnetization (FCM) with an applied field, B app, of 10 T of the HG-TFM with 60 mm in outer diameter and 10 mm in inner diameter. This value may be the highest value ever reported compared to any other magnetic sources. The B z ��� d B z / d z value increased with decreasing inner diameter of the HG-TFM and with increasing B app during FCM. The electromagnetic stress in the HG-TFM during the FCM process mainly results from the hoop stress along the circumferential direction. The simulations suggested that there is no fracture risk of the bulk components during FCM from 10 T in a proposed realistic configuration of the HG-TFM where both TFM parts are mounted in Al-alloy rings and the whole HG-TFM is encapsulated in a steel capsule. A quasi-zero gravity space can be realized in the HG-TFM with a high B z ��� d B z / d z value in an open space outside the vacuum chamber. The fast thermal and electromagnetic transients that occur in a superconducting magnet in case of a quench have the potential of generating large mechanical stresses both in the superconducting coils and in the magnet structure. While the investigation of such quench loads should generally be conducted to ensure a safe operation of the system, its importance is greatly enlarged in the case of high-field magnets based on strain sensitive superconductors. For these, a rigorous analysis of the magnet mechanics during a quench becomes critical. The scope of this work is hence to bring, for the first time, a detailed understanding of the three-dimensional mechanical behavior of a Nb3Sn accelerator magnet during a quench discharge. The study relies on the use of finite element models, where various multi-domain simulations are employed together to solve the coupled physics of the problem. Our analysis elaborates on the case study of the new MQXF quadrupole magnet, currently being developed for the high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC. Notably, we could find a very good agreement between the results of the simulation and experimental data from full-scale magnet tests. The validated model confirms the appearance of new peak stresses in the superconducting coils. An increase in the most relevant transverse coil stresses of 20–40 MPa with respect to the values after magnet cool-down has been found for the examined case. A scalable concept to prepare high current density windings with high-temperature superconducting material is introduced. The concept covers miniaturized high-current windings and large coils for applications in energy technology as well. The principle is based on a circular disk-up-down-assembly (‘DUDA’) and extended to rectangular coils. First measurements on the assemblies (≈40 turns) in liquid nitrogen are presented as a proof-of-concept. Centre fields of ≈40 mT and ≈340 mT are measured during steady operation and pulsed operation respectively. Operating the assemblies at lower temperatures will strongly increase the current and field performance. Lowering the contact resistance might lead to further improvements. Due to the homogenous structure in the radial direction, shear stresses are minimized and large winding heights can be realized in principle. The DUDA concept of coil windings can be used to build even more sophisticated magnetic arrangements, e.g. Halbach-arrays, or complex windings for new stator configurations of rotating machines. The optional miniaturization offers compact and powerful magnets, e.g. for accelerators too.

Permanent magnets based on hard hexaferrite represent the largest family of magnets being used today by volume. They generate moderate remanence induction, but present crucial advantages in terms of availability, cost, resistance to demagnetization and corrosion and absence of eddy current losses. As a consequence, ferrites are the most logical candidate for substitution of rare-earths in selected applications that do not demand the best performing magnets. If the remanence of ferrite-based magnets was to be improved, even mildly, the door to a larger scale substitution could be opened. In this framework, we review here current strategies to improve the properties of hexaferrites for permanent magnet applications. We first discuss the potential of exploring the nanoscale. Second, progress related to controllably doping hexaferrites is revised. Third, results achieved by fabricating hard-soft magnetic composites using ferrites as the hard phase are presented. Finally, future prospects and new potential end applications for ferrite magnets are discussed.

L10-FeNi hard magnetic alloy with coercivity reaching 861 Oe was synthesized through annealing Fe42Ni41.3Si8B4P4Cu0.7 amorphous alloy, and the L10-FeNi formation mechanism has been studied. It is found the L10-FeNi in annealed samples at 400 °C mainly originated from the residual amorphous phase during the second stage of crystallization which could take place over 60 °C lower than the measured onset temperature of the second stage with a 5 °C/min heating rate. Annealing at 400 °C after fully crystallization still caused a slight increase of coercivity, which was probably contributed by the limited transformation from other high temperature crystalline phases towards L10 phase, or the removal of B from L10 lattice and improvement of the ordering quality of L10 phase due to the reduced temperature from 520 °C to 400 °C. The first stage of crystallization has hardly direct contribution to L10-FeNi formation. Ab initio simulations show that the addition of Si or Co in L10-FeNi has the effect of enhancing the thermal stability of L10 phase without seriously deteriorating its magnetic hardness. The non-monotonic feature of direction dependent coercivity in ribbon segments resulted from the combination of domain wall pinning and demagnetization effects. The approaches of synthesizing L10-FeNi magnets by adding Si or Co and decreasing the onset crystallization temperature have been discussed in detail.

Numerous experiments have shown that the loads applied to Nb3Sn strands and cables can reduce their critical current. Experiments, performed on uniaxially loaded strands, allowed to define clear laws to describe the evolution of the critical surface as a function of the applied current, field, temperature and strain. It is, however, still unclear how these laws can be applied to superconducting magnets. The present paper proposes a methodology to estimate the critical current and temperature margin reduction on superconducting magnets due to stress on the superconducting material. The methodology is tested on the MQXF magnets, a quadrupole developed for the High Luminosity LHC project, and successfully validated by comparing computed strain with data from strain gauge measurements. Results suggested that, because of the stresses arising in winding during assembly, cool-down and powering, the current limit of the magnet is lower than the expected short sample limit, and that the most critical region does not coincide with the peak field location.

Strontium hexaferrite nanocrystalline powders were synthesized using a citrate combustion method and subsequently subjected to post-synthesis processing with the aim of tuning the micro-nanostructure to improve the magnetic properties. Firstly, the synthesis thermal treatments were optimized in order to minimize the formation of secondary phases, mainly hematite. Secondly, the as-synthesized powders were conditioned by a two-step process: ball milling in wet medium (ethanol) and high-speed mixing. The final processed powders exhibited a saturation magnetization of 74 emu g-1 and a coercivity of 6450 Oe. Following a low-temperature combustion synthesis, the coercivity is one of the largest values reported for strontium ferrites. The combination of the two-step conditioning procedure results in a useful methodology to obtain SrFe12O19 nanocrystalline powders with competitive properties. The morphological, structural and magnetic properties of the processed material make it a promising candidate for hard-soft ferrite-based composite magnets, where large coercivity values are highly desirable., This work is supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación through Project Nos. The first determination of the Planck constant with the second generation of the joule balance, NIM-2, was completed in 2017 with an uncertainty of 2.4 × 10−7. Due to the movement of the magnet during the measurement process, the effect of the external field is a critical problem in NIM-2. At present, the electromagnet system is used in NIM-2. By taking the average of the results with positive and negative exciting currents, the uncertainty from the external field is reduced to 1.7 × 10−7, which is still the largest source in the uncertainty budget as all the other items are less than 1 × 10−7. In the near future, a permanent magnet system will be applied in NIM-2 and the main field cannot be reversed. Although the coupling of the external magnetic field in the permanent magnet system is about 40 times less than that in the electromagnet system, further reduction of this effect is still required in the permanent magnet system. In this paper, the effect of the external field is analyzed in both an electromagnet system and a permanent magnet system based on simulations and experiments. Then, the methods of magnetic shielding and compensation coils are proposed and simulated in the permanent magnet system. The results show that it may be possible to reduce the uncertainty of the external field to less than 2 × 10−8 in the permanent magnet system by employing the two methods.

Rare-earth-based barium copper oxide (REBCO) coated conductors are promising candidates for the development of ultra-high-field (UHF) magnets, due to its high in-field performance, engineering current density, tensile strength and commercial availability. However, technological challenges pertaining to the large screening currents still remain. The major issues caused by the screening currents in REBCO conductors in UHF applications involve two aspects: the screening current induced magnetic field (SCF), and the screening current induced stress (SCS). In the past decades, extensive research has been devoted to the SCF, offering a variety of possible remedies. With latest advances in the construction and testing of UHF magnets, new observations of the SCF involving REBCO coils were reported. The SCS was identified in recent years and has raised growing concerns. The excessive and highly concentrated Lorentz force, rooted in the high magnetic field and the screening currents, poses threats to the mechanical strength of REBCO coated conductors. The aim of this paper is to review recent research efforts in understanding and tackling the screening current related technological issues. For the SCF, we focus on the latest observations in high-field experiments and its various mitigation methods. For the SCS, we present recent studies including experimental characterizations, numerical modelling and possible countermeasures. It is still an open question to precisely predict the SCS in large-scale HTS magnets. How to minimize the influence of SCF and SCS is one of the key technical challenges for the design of future UHF magnets.

Ultrathin van der Waals (vdW) magnets provide a possibility to access magnetic ordering in the two-dimensional (2D) limit, which are expected to be applied in the spintronic devices. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful characterization method to investigate the spin-related properties in 2D vdW magnets, including magnon and spin–lattice interaction, which are hardly accessible by other optical methods. In this paper, the recent progress of various magnetic properties in 2D vdW magnets studied by Raman spectroscopy is reviewed, including the magnetic transition, spin-wave, spin–lattice interaction, symmetry tuning induced by spin ordering, and nonreciprocal magneto-phonon Raman scattering.

The Kibble balance is expected to become an important instrument in the near future for realizing the unit of mass, the kilogram, in the revised international system of units (SI). The Kibble balance assumes an equality of two magnetic profiles measured in the weighing and velocity phases. A recent study conducted in the Kibble balance group at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) showed that the coil current could significantly affect the magnetic profile, which should be carefully taken into account in the Kibble balance experiment. This paper gives a deeper understanding and investigation of the effect, and discusses the magnetic profile change due to the coil current, for both the classical two-mode and the one-mode Kibble balances. The coil current effect has been theoretically and experimentally investigated based on a typical magnet design with an air gap. One important conclusion found in the one-mode Kibble balance is that the magnetic profile change measured in the velocity phase is twice the change in the weighing phase. A compensation suggestion, to minimize the profile change due to the coil current in a BIPM-type magnet, is presented.

We demonstrate that four-spin interactions in crystals with D3h point group of symmetry can cause a phase transition from a collinear state to a non-collinear magnetic ground state (such as magnetic vortices or magnetic skyrmions), while all anti-symmetric chiral terms are forbidden by symmetry in such crystals. Moreover, D3h point group rather common among two dimensional magnets. Taking into account possible four-spin chiral exchange interactions is important for understanding noncollinear magnetic order in these systems. We also address a possible stabilization of bimerons by the same contribution.

Iranian Light Source Facility (ILSF) is a 3 GeV synchrotron radiation laboratory in the detailed design stage. The main building site is being excavated in Qazvin, 150 km from Tehran. The Booster ring of this facility with a circumference of 504 m and a low emittance of 3.5 nm rad accelerates electrons from 150 MeV to 3 GeV. Using POISSON and OPERA codes, we designed the ILSF booster ring magnets including dipoles, quadrupoles, sextupoles, and separate correctors. Cooling and electrical calculations are done, and ramping effects are considered. The ILSF has also been attempting to practice mechanical designs and to build prototype magnets at this stage too.

The vicinity to a two-dimensional magnetic material provides a simple and effective way to break the valley degeneracy of transition-metal dichalcogenides because of the magnetic proximity effect. Based on first-principles calculations, we study the band structure of a MoS2/CrI3 van der Waals heterostructure and its manipulation by vertical electric fields. A huge valley splitting of about 19.60 meV, equivalent to an external magnetic fields of about 89.0 T can be generated by an electric field of 0.115 V Å−1. The electric field causes discontinuous changes in the valley splitting. The electric field drives the bands of MoS2 across those of CrI3. At the critical electric fields, the interlayer orbital hybridization leads to the energy level repulsion and an abrupt exchange of the band index. We also study the effect of interlayer distance on the valley splitting and observe a more significant electric field modulation. This work deepens our understanding on the interfacial magnetic proximity effect as a result of the orbital hybridization across the van der Waals gap.

As the braking device of the aircraft electromechanical actuation system, the brake is a vital link in the aircraft attitude change or function adjustment. Among them, the permanent magnet brake has attracted extensive attention in the field of aerospace technology because of its advantages of low energy consumption and high reliability. At present, the domestic permanent magnet brake is heavy and the braking torque density is generally low, which limits its further development in the field of aerospace. In order to improve the braking torque density of permanent magnet brake, this paper proposes a research method of high torque density permanent magnet brake is proposed. By establishing the magnetic circuit structure of the permanent magnet brake, the relationship between the external characteristics of the permanent magnet brake and the design parameters is determined, and then the performance parameters of the permanent magnet brake are simulated and verified by using the finite element simulation software. Finally, through the physical test, the results show that this method can effectively improve the braking torque density.

This paper is the study of a low-current-ripple and high-bandwidth corrector power supply. The main circuit of this power supply is using a full bridge (H-bridge) structure, and the output current through the high-precision direct current current transducers (DCCT) to transfer the reference voltage to the controller. Previous TPS corrector power supply had a 4.7 kHz current bandwidth, and its output current ripple was 100 μA. Such current ripple and bandwidth do not satisfy the requirements of a rapidly orbiting feedback system of air core loading. Therefore, our research team designed a novel prototype power supply with a high bandwidth (more than 10 kHz) and low output current ripple (less than 10 μA) which was developed via a novel topology circuit. The operation frequency of the main power switch's n-type metal-oxide-semiconductor logic of this novel circuit is increased to 245 kHz. Moreover, the output results of the filter inductor and filter capacitor are modified to 80 μH and 2.46 μF, respectively. The prototype power supply bandwidth reached 10.546 kHz and increase of 124% and its output current ripple was lowered below than 5 μA. The properties of this corrector power supply are very important for the beam correction in storage rings. Finally, A circuit with an input voltage of 48 V, a maximum output current of 10 A, and an output power of 400 W is tested in a laboratory to verify the performance of the developed corrector for the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center.

A 14 T whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnet is designed with Bi2223 high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire. Owing to the large critical current and large critical tensile strength of the wire type HT-NX at ultra-high field, the magnet is optimized in a compact shape with length of 1.9 m and outer diameter of 1.3 m. It is in the form of stacked double pancakes (DPs) with total wire consumption of 455 km. The DPs with various inner and outer radii enable the electromagnetic design to obtain highly homogeneous field of 1.5 ppm over 400 mm diameter of spherical volume (DSV). Hoopstress by winding process, thermal contraction and Lorenz force is calculated and below the wire strength specification. Considerable reduction of screening current effect in MRI magnet application is proved by a calculation example. Field homogeneity as it is influenced by various systematic tolerances and random geometric tolerances is numerically estimated, for further design optimization and design of shimming system. Iron room for passive shielding with dimension of 5 × 5 × 10 m is found to be with wall thickness of around 30 cm to effectively contain the 5-Gauss field to the wall surface. Cooling strategy for cryogen-free technique is proposed and the magnet coils temperature is calculated as below 8 K based on the estimation of joint Ohmic heating power of 1.0 W. Quench protection adopts circuit subdivision and dumping resistors to restrict the maximum voltage below 1.9 kV. No-insulation technique for the quench protection is also discussed. Some other wire candidates like REBCO and Nb3Sn for development of such ultra-high field MRI magnets are commented.

The focus of this paper is on the mechanical design of a NbTi-based demonstrator magnet for magnetic density separation (MDS) that is being constructed at the University of Twente. MDS is a new recycling technology that allows the separation of non-magnetic particles based on their mass density, using a vertical magnetic field gradient and a ferrofluid. The unique mechanical design challenge for this type of magnet is the desired minimization of the distance between a sim1 m2 planar array of cryogenic racetrack coils and the ambient-temperature ferrofluid bath. The optimization of the magnet geometry results in a distance between the coils and ferrofluid of 50 mm. This is made possible by opting for conduction-cooling, for the inclusion of room-temperature rods that pass through the cold mass to support the cryostat, and for the geometry of the cassette that reacts to the Lorentz force.

In this work, the influence of the time points of the simultaneous or separate partial substitution of La3+ for Sr2+ and of Co2+ for Fe3+ in Sr ferrite on the magnetic properties of anisotropic M-type Sr ferrite magnets was investigated. It was found that the optimum values of the remanence Br and of the coercivity Hci of Sr ferrite magnet were obtained by La-Co simultaneous substitution before calcination. On the other hand, Hci is increased with causing minor decrease in Br by La separate substitution before calcination and Co separate substitution after calcination. Whereas, La-Co simultaneous substitution after calcination has a deteriorating effect on the Br of M-type Sr ferrite. Optimum magnetic properties and conditions in the experiment will eventually be used as high-end permanent magnets for the high-efficiency motor application in automobile with Br > 4500 ± 50 Gauss and Hci > 4500 ± 50 Oe.

To understand the intriguing many-body states and effects in the correlated quantum materials, inference of the microscopic effective Hamiltonian from experiments constitutes an important yet very challenging inverse problem. Here we propose an unbiased and efficient approach learning the effective Hamiltonian through the many-body analysis of the measured thermal data. Our approach combines the strategies including the automatic gradient and Bayesian optimization with the thermodynamics many-body solvers including the exact diagonalization and the tensor renormalization group methods. We showcase the accuracy and powerfulness of the Hamiltonian learning by applying it firstly to the thermal data generated from a given spin model, and then to realistic experimental data measured in the spin-chain compound copper nitrate and triangular-lattice magnet TmMgGaO4. The present automatic approach constitutes a unified framework of many-body thermal data analysis in the studies of quantum magnets and strongly correlated materials in general.

In this paper, Takahashi et al reported a successful case to reach this goal with a hybrid trapped field magnet (i.e. inner lens and outer cylinder trapped field magnet). The inner lens were cooled from room temperature to about 20 K in zero field cooling followed by applied field (e.g. 7 T) that the flux density will be concentrated to above 10 T. And in the same time the outer trapped field magnet will be field cooled from room temperature to about 20 K in this above 10 T field.

A new method for designing stellarators with variable-thickness perpendicular permanent magnets has been developed, based on a two-step magnet design strategy that we previously proposed for designing stellarators with standardized magnet blocks. Our design strategy uses a ‘local compensation’ method to obtain an initial magnet design and a ‘global fine-tuning’ method to further optimize the initial design. The new method is compared to the previously proposed Fourier decomposition method, and the results indicate that this new method can yield a similar magnet design for an N fp = 2 quasi-axisymmetric stellarator at a lower computational cost. High accuracy is achieved, as demonstrated by a normal magnetic field square on the plasma surface of χ B 2 = 3.43 × 1 0 − 8 T 2 m 2 , a maximum residual of B n = 3.44 G s for a ∼1 T total field, and a flux-surface-averaged residual B n of B n / B = 3.16 × 1 0 − 5 relative to the total field. Furthermore, the new method can automatically yield a magnet design with large areas of continuous vacancies for ports and plasma access, which is more flexible than the Fourier decomposition method. These results indicate that the new method is robust and effective when used to design stellarators with variable-thickness perpendicular permanent magnets, and, most importantly, that the two-step magnet design strategy has great potential to develop permanent magnet design methods suitable for various magnet layouts.

Cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTS), such as RE-Ba2Cu3O7-δ(REBCO, RE=rare earth), (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10-x(Bi-2223) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x(Bi-2212), have enabled the development of high-field superconducting magnets capable of generating magnetic fields far exceeding 20 T. The brittle nature of HTS requires elaborate means to protect them against the high stresses and strains associated with high-field magnet operation, and so far has prevented reliable high-field HTS magnets from becoming a reality. Here we report a more than tenfold increase in the irreversible strain limit under axial tension (eirr) to over 7 % in composite conductors, such as in high-current Conductor on Round Core (CORC®) conductors, containing REBCO tapes wound in a helical fashion around a round metal core. Minimizing the tape winding pitch mechanically decouples the brittle REBCO film from the overall conductor. The REBCO tapes behave as springs, limiting the rate at which applied strain is transferred to the ceramic film. In addition, high-strength alloy cores allow the critical stress (σcrit) under axial tension at which initial degradation of CORC® conductors occurs to exceed 600 MPa, making them one of the strongest superconductors available. Mechanically decoupling the ceramic REBCO films from the overall CORC® conductor allows effective protection against the high operating stresses in high-field magnets. This breakthrough presents a monumental shift for HTS magnet technology, bringing reliable high-field superconducting magnets for compact fusion machines, the next generation of particle accelerators, and 40 – 60 T research solenoids within reach. This paper gives the causes of eddy current loss of permanent magnet in axial permanent magnet motor, and puts forward the method of reducing eddy current loss by circumferential and radial combined sectional insulation of permanent magnet. The principle analysis and analytical formula derivation of permanent magnet sectional insulation to reduce eddy current loss are carried out. Finally, Maxwell three-dimensional finite element simulation is used to verify that the circumferential and radial combined sectional insulation of permanent magnet can greatly and quickly reduce the eddy current loss of permanent magnet of axial motor.

Oxygen and nitrogen in the air have different magnetic properties in a magnetic field. Oxygen and nitrogen are paramagnetic gases and diamagnetic gases, and the magnetizing force received in a gradient magnetic field is in opposite directions. Based on the magnetization theory and simulation experiment analysis, this paper uses the difference in the direction and magnitude of the magnetization force of oxygen and nitrogen in a gradient magnetic field to study the force state of oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the input air in a gradient magnetic field and the oxygen mass fraction of the output gas to explore effective ways to obtain oxygen-enriched gas. The results of this study can provide oxygen-enriched gas for operations such as oxygen-enriched combustion technology and sewage treatment engineering, and improve operational efficiency.

A three-dimensional fluid model is developed to investigate the radio-frequency inductively coupled H2 plasma in a reactor with a rectangular expansion chamber and a cylindrical driver chamber, for neutral beam injection system in CFETR. In this model, the electron effective collision frequency and the ion mobility at high E-fields are employed, for accurate simulation of discharges at low pressures (0.3 Pa–2 Pa) and high powers (40 kW–100 kW). The results indicate that when the high E-field ion mobility is taken into account, the electron density is about four times higher than the value in the low E-field case. In addition, the influences of the magnetic field, pressure and power on the electron density and electron temperature are demonstrated. It is found that the electron density and electron temperature in the xz-plane along permanent magnet side become much more asymmetric when magnetic field enhances. However, the plasma parameters in the yz-plane without permanent magnet side are symmetric no matter the magnetic field is applied or not. Besides, the maximum of the electron density first increases and then decreases with magnetic field, while the electron temperature at the bottom of the expansion region first decreases and then almost keeps constant. As the pressure increases from 0.3 Pa to 2 Pa, the electron density becomes higher, with the maximum moving upwards to the driver region, and the symmetry of the electron temperature in the xz-plane becomes much better. As power increases, the electron density rises, whereas the spatial distribution is similar. It can be summarized that the magnetic field and gas pressure have great influence on the symmetry of the plasma parameters, while the power only has little effect.

Aiming at the problems such as detection accuracy, damage identification, and performance evaluation in the inspection and testing of elevator composite traction steel strips, the related research results of nondestructive testing of elevator composite traction steel strips at home and abroad are comprehensively analyzed, and the future is summarized and proposed Research direction. First, the structural characteristics of composite traction steel strips for elevators in use today are introduced, and the advantages of composite traction steel strips for elevators on steel steel ropes are specifically analyzed. Second, the development of nondestructive testing technology is introduced, and the research and application of non-destructive testing of composite steel strips and steel steel ropes for elevators are emphasized. Among them, non-destructive testing of steel steel ropes mainly including AC electromagnetic method, permanent magnet method, magnetic flux leakage method and residual magnetism method. The detection methods of composite steel strip mainly include magnetic flux test method, life setting method and resistance test method. Finally, on the basis of comparing the current non-destructive testing methods, a differential field-weak non-destructive testing method of dual magnetic circuits is proposed, and the research trend of defect detection of elevator traction steel strips is pointed out.

One way to achieve increased wind capacity is by installing larger and more efficient wind turbines, which results in larger/heavier generators. Direct-drive, permanent magnet generators are favoured due to their increased efficiency, but the added weight is an issue, as this drives up the cost of the nacelle and turbine support structure, along with increasing the manufacturing and installation costs. Therefore, minimizing the mass, particularly the structural mass, of these low speed generators is becoming much more important. A vast amount of research has been done on trying to reduce the electromagnetically ‘active’ materials, but it is the supporting structure or ‘inactive’ materials, that makes up the biggest percentage of the generator’s mass. Therefore, this paper studies the statics and dynamics of a large offshore direct-drive generator’s supporting structure and the opportunities for light-weighting, as well as improvements to the generator’s rotor structure through structural optimisation. The indicator for optimised design is system weight under each predefined scenario. These scenarios will cover different design considerations of the generator’s rotor structure.

We investigate the magnetic properties of amorphous Sm10Co90/Co60(Al70Zr30)40/Co85(Al70Zr30)15exchange-spring magnet trilayers. The magnetically soft Co85(Al70Zr30)15layer is coupled to the magnetically hard Sm10Co90layer through the weakly magnetic low-TcCo60(Al70Zr30)40spacer layer. The strength of the coupling can be controlled with temperature and the coupling persists above the intrinsicTcof the spacer layer due to a long-range magnetic proximity effect. Polarized neutron reflectivity is used to examine the magnetic profile of the trilayers during magnetization reversal. A two-step switching occurs, with the switching angle of the soft layer strongly dependent on the strength of the coupling. In the strong coupling regime a magnetic state can be achieved where the soft layer magnetization is perpendicular to the hard layer whereas in the weak coupling regime the soft layer reverses fully.

We investigate the magnetic properties of a chemically heterogeneous binary-main-phase (BMP) Nd-Ce-Fe-B magnet with a core-shell structure via micromagnetic simulation. It is found that the coercivity strongly depends on the shell thickness. The BMP magnet's coercivity initially increases and then decreases with increasing Nd-rich shell thickness, and so there is the optimal shell thickness which shows the maximum coercivity for any given Ce concentration. The simulation shows the significant difference in coercivity and maximum energy product between the BMP and single-main-phase magnets. Notably, the magnetization reversal mechanism of the BMP magnet is revealed in the simulation. Local reversals in the BMP magnet first occur in the Ce-rich shells, followed by the Nd-rich cores. Then, the magnetization in Ce-rich core/Nd-rich shell typed grains is switched after reversed magnetization of all the Nd-rich core/Ce-rich shell typed grains. The BMP magnet represents a further increased coercivity for a larger GB thickness, which can be well explained by a maximum stray field.
