Anton; Zhang, Shuo; Zhao, Guang-Yao; Zhao, Shan-Shan.--This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted reuse, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present a framework for characterizing the spatiotemporal power spectrum of the variability expected from the horizon-scale emission structure around supermassive black holes, and we apply this framework to a library of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations and associated general relativistic ray-traced images relevant for Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sgr A*. We find that the variability power spectrum is generically a red-noise process in both the temporal and spatial dimensions, with the peak in power occurring on the longest timescales and largest spatial scales. When both the time-averaged source structure and the spatially integrated light-curve variability are removed, the residual power spectrum exhibits a universal broken power-law behavior. On small spatial frequencies, the residual power spectrum rises as the square of the spatial frequency and is proportional to the variance in the centroid of emission. Beyond some peak in variability power, the residual power spectrum falls as that of the time-averaged source structure, which is similar across simulations; this behavior can be naturally explained if the variability arises from a multiplicative random field that has a steeper high-frequency power-law index than that of the time-averaged source structure. We briefly explore the ability of power spectral variability studies to constrain physical parameters relevant for the GRMHD simulations, which can be scaled to provide predictions for black holes in a range of systems in the optically thin regime. The image polarization is determined by effects including the orientation of the magnetic field in the emitting region, relativistic motion of the gas, strong gravitational lensing by the black hole, and parallel transport in the curved spacetime. We explore these effects using a simple model of an axisymmetric, equatorial accretion disk around a Schwarzschild black hole. By using an approximate expression for the null geodesics derived by Beloborodov and conservation of the Walker–Penrose constant, we provide analytic estimates for the image polarization. We test this model using currently favored general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of M87*, using ring parameters given by the simulations. For a subset of these with modest Faraday effects, we show that the ring model broadly reproduces the polarimetric image morphology. Our model also predicts the polarization evolution for compact flaring regions, such as those observed from Sgr A* with GRAVITY. With suitably chosen parameters, our simple model can reproduce the EVPA pattern and relative polarized intensity in Event Horizon Telescope images of M87*. Under the physically motivated assumption that the magnetic field trails the fluid velocity, this comparison is consistent with the clockwise rotation inferred from total intensity images. © 2021 The Author(s). In SrTiO3, the nature of dopants and their substitution at the A or B site becomes a critical factor in determining the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity. The electronic band structure and the density of states (DOS) for the ab-initio study using different dopants were estimated using PBE-GGA approximation. The size, site of substitution, and nature of dopants cause significant changes in the lattice dimensions, band structure, band curvatures, and the density of states, which reflect as changes in the effective mass m B i ⁎ . The effective mass m B i ⁎ is calculated from the curvature of the bottom-most conduction band using the one-band effective mass approximation. Pentavalent substitutions on the B site of SrTiO3 affect the conduction band’s curvature differently than with trivalent substitutions on the A site. They also exhibit an opposite trend in the change in band curvature according to the dopant’s ionic radius. In contrast, isovalent dopants showed no change in the band curvature except for the bandgap modification. In this paper, we have provided a semi-quantitative understanding regarding the thermoelectric properties like conductivity and Seebeck coefficient that get affected due to the substituent’s nature and site at which it substitutes.

Anton; Zhao, Guangyao; Zhao, Shan-Shan; Zhu, Ziyan; Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration has recently produced the first resolved images of the central supermassive black hole in the giant elliptical galaxy M87. Here we report on tests of the consistency and accuracy of the general relativistic radiative transfer codes used within the collaboration to model M87∗ and Sgr A∗. We compare and evaluate (1) deflection angles for equatorial null geodesics in a Kerr spacetime; (2) images calculated from a series of simple, parameterized matter distributions in the Kerr metric using simplified emissivities and absorptivities; (3) for a subset of codes, images calculated from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations using different realistic synchrotron emissivities and absorptivities; (4) observables for the 2017 configuration of EHT, including visibility amplitudes and closure phases. The error in total flux is of order 1% when the codes are run with production numerical parameters. The dominant source of discrepancies for small camera distances is the location and detailed setup of the software "camera"that each code uses to produce synthetic images. We find that when numerical parameters are suitably chosen and the camera is sufficiently far away the images converge and that for given transfer coefficients, numerical uncertainties are unlikely to limit parameter estimation for the current generation of EHT observations. The purpose of this paper is to describe a verification and comparison of EHT radiative transfer codes. It is not to verify EHT models more generally. © 2020. The American Astronomical Society. The Atacama Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Phasing Project (APP) has developed and deployed the hardware and software necessary to coherently sum the signals of individual ALMA antennas and record the aggregate sum in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Data Exchange Format. These beamforming capabilities allow the ALMA array to collectively function as the equivalent of a single large aperture and participate in global VLBI arrays. The inclusion of phased ALMA in current VLBI networks operating at (sub)millimeter wavelengths provides an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity, as well as enhancements in u-v coverage and north-south angular resolution. The availability of a phased ALMA enables a wide range of new ultra-high angular resolution science applications, including the resolution of supermassive black holes on event horizon scales and studies of the launch and collimation of astrophysical jets. It also provides a high-sensitivity aperture that may be used for investigations such as pulsar searches at high frequencies. It is found that ultrathin poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film with a 2.5 nm-thick layer exhibits a higher mobility of 5.0×10−2 cm2/Vs than its bulk counterpart. The crystalline structure of the as-fabricated ultrathin P3HT layer is verified by atomic force microscopy as well as grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Transient measurements of the as-fabricated transistors reveal the influence of the interface traps on charge transport. These results are explained by the trap energy level distribution at the interface manipulated by layers of polymer film.

A programmable low voltage unipolar inverter with saturated-load configuration has been demonstrated on a plastic substrate. A self-assembled monolayer of gold (Au) nanoparticles was inserted into the dielectric layer acting as a charge trapping layer. The inverter operated well with supply voltages of < − 5 V and the switching voltage was tuned in a wide range under low program/erase bias. The retention and endurance test at ambient conditions confirmed the reliability of the inverter. Furthermore, the programmable behavior was maintained well at various bending states, demonstrating the adequate flexibility of our devices.

We demonstrate air-stable low voltage flexible nonvolatile memory transistors by embedding gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the charge storage element. The solution processability of the nanocomposite is suitable for low-cost large area processing on flexible substrates. The memory transistor exhibits a memory window of 2.1 V, long retention time ( > 105 s) with low operating voltage (≤5 V). The memory behavior has been tuned via varying the composition of the fillers (Au NPs), which offers relatively easy processability for different flexible electronics applications. The electrical properties of the memory devices are found to be stable under bending. These findings will be of value for low cost and low voltage advanced flexible electronics.

In this paper, we report a high-performance P3HT/PCBM bulk-heterojunction solar cell with a power conversion efficiency of 4.85% fabricated by adjusting the polymer crystallinity and nanoscale phase separation using an ultrasonic irradiation mixing approach for the polymer. The grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, UV/Vis spectroscopic, and atomic force microscopic measurement results for the P3HT/PCBM blend films reveal that the P3HT/PCBM film fabricated by ultrasonic irradiation mixing of the P3HT and PCBM solutions for 10 min has a higher degree of crystallinity, a higher absorption efficiency, and better phase separation, which together account for the higher charge transport properties and photovoltaic cell performance.

The eigenvalue equation relevant for investigating Stark ladders (SL) in finite crystals on the basis of the tight-binding approximation (TBA) is derived from a difference equation, which is established using (localised) Wannier functions. The treatment makes use of a two-band model, includes the effect of the electric field on both the Coulomb and the resonance integrals and incorporates the finiteness of the crystal via the use of the periodic boundary conditions. Numerical explorations of the eigenvalue equation are carried out with the help of Householder's tridiagonalisation method in combination with the Q-L algorithm. The energy eigenvalues are computed for various values of the electric field and other pertinent parameters, the parameters involving the interband terms being determined on the basis of the (k.p) method. A thorough scanning of the energy eigenvalues reveals the circumstances under which SL would occur in finite crystals conforming with the conditions adopted. The features of the results are discussed critically, both independently and in the light of other similar results. In particular, the treatment predicts well the features expected of SL in finite systems for low fields; for higher fields, which are likely to introduce Zener tunnelling, the application of the TBA to the problem of SL in finite crystals appears to leave room for question.

The high-field electrical conduction in impure semiconductors has been treated, taking into account the conditions which would favour the occurrence of Stark ladders (SL). Some results of the authors previous treatment (Roy and Mahapatra 1983) for high-field electrical conduction in semiconductors have been used for the purpose. The carrier concentration in impure semiconductors has been obtained by considering the mechanisms of (i) Poole-Frenkel (PF) effect and (ii) field emission (FE) or tunneling. The aspects studied are the variation of current density with field and the relative influences of the PF effect and FE on the carrier concentration. The results are discussed critically, especially in the light of the experimental findings of Maekawa (1970).

An evolution operator appropriate for studying the behaviour of Bloch electrons in the presence of both an electric field and an optical field simultaneously, is developed. This evolution operator is seen to be capable of providing a unified approach for understanding various features related to Wannier-Stark ladders. By applying this evolution operator, the authors have investigated (i) the nature of the energy spectrum of Bloch electrons in the presence of an electric field alone and (ii) the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by Bloch electrons in the presence of an electric field. The principal results obtained are the following: (a) Wannier-Stark ladders would exist even in the presence of Zener tunnelling provided it is retained only up to first order. The effect of Zener tunnelling higher than the first order is to produce a broadening of the discrete Stark levels; numerical analysis relevant to this aspect is carried out with respect to a one-dimensional GaAs crystal. (b) A formula is derived for the coefficient of absorption of electromagnetic radiation by Bloch electrons in the presence of an electric field, by taking into account the k dependence of the momentum matrix element and using a nearly-free-electron model.

The authors have carried out a study of the electrical conduction in semiconductors, by developing a method which makes use of an evolution operator, connected intimately with one evolution operator they reported earlier in regard to the behaviour of Bloch electrons in an electric field. The method formulated in this paper has a very general basis and is capable of providing the transport theory of semiconductors for all situations under which Stark ladders (SL) would occur, and also for the conditions under which Stark ladders are not expected. Their broad investigations are concerned with (i) the derivation of the most general form of the steady-state current density, and (ii) the derivation of the form of current density for all situations under which SL would occur. In the context of these broad results, they have given (a) a detailed treatment of the SL-dependent current for a special model, with the inclusion of the electron-phonon interaction only up to second order, and (b) a formula for the low-field (ohmic) current. The principal findings in regard to the aspect (a) are the following: (i) in the presence of Stark ladders, the differential conductivity becomes negative; and (ii) in presence of the Stark ladders the current field characteristic shows, as well as (i), resonance-type anomalies; such anomalies occur for fields which make the longitudinal optical phonon energy equal to an integral multiple of SL spacing and are prominent specially at low temperatures. The observations relevant to the detailed treatment of the special model are valuable in analysing the experimental results about the effects of SL on the electrical conduction in semiconductors.
