We present the simulation methodology and results of our new data-driven global coronal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation model. In this model, the solar-surface electric field is first calculated such that the curl will satisfy both the induction equation and the given temporal variations of the solar-surface magnetic field. We use the synoptic maps of the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager three-component vector-magnetic-field data to specify the solar-surface magnetic-field vector for a period from Carrington Rotations (CRs) 2106 to 2110. A set of whole-Sun three-component electric-field maps are obtained for each CR transition interval of about 27.3 days. Using the inverted electric field as the driving variable, our new global coronal MHD model, with the angular resolution of π /64, can trace the evolution of the three-dimensional coronal magnetic field that matches the specified time-dependent solar-surface magnetic-field maps and simultaneously satisfies the divergence-free condition. A set of additional boundary treatments are introduced to control the contribution of the horizontal components of the magnetic field at the weak-field regions. The strength of the solar-surface magnetic field is limited to 20 Gauss for the sake of computational stability in this study. With these numerical treatments, the nonpotential coronal features, such as twisted loop structures, and their eruptive outward motions are obtained. This present model, capable of introducing three-component solar-surface magnetic-field observation data to coronal MHD simulations, is our first step toward a better model framework for the solar corona and hence solar wind. Interplanetary corotating interaction regions (CIRs) can be remotely imaged in white light (WL), as demonstrated by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) on board the Coriolis spacecraft and Heliospheric Imagers (HIs) on board the twin Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft. The interplanetary WL intensity, due to Thomson scattering of incident sunlight by free electrons, is jointly determined by the 3D distribution of electron number density and line-of-sight (LOS) weighting factors of the Thomson-scattering geometry. The 2D radiance patterns of CIRs in WL sky maps look very different from different 3D viewpoints. Because of the in-ecliptic locations of both the STEREO and Coriolis spacecraft, the longitudinal dimension of interplanetary CIRs has, up to now, always been integrated in WL imagery. To synthesize the WL radiance patterns of CIRs from an out-of-ecliptic (OOE) vantage point, we perform forward magnetohydrodynamic modeling of the 3D inner heliosphere during Carrington Rotation CR1967 at solar maximum. The mixing effects associated with viewing 3D CIRs are significantly minimized from an OOE viewpoint. Our forward modeling results demonstrate that OOE WL imaging from a latitude greater than 60° can (1) enable the garden-hose spiral morphology of CIRs to be readily resolved, (2) enable multiple coexisting CIRs to be differentiated, and (3) enable the continuous tracing of any interplanetary CIR back toward its coronal source. In particular, an OOE view in WL can reveal where nascent CIRs are formed in the extended corona and how these CIRs develop in interplanetary space. Therefore, a panoramic view from a suite of wide-field WL imagers in a solar polar orbit would be invaluable in unambiguously resolving the large-scale longitudinal structure of CIRs in the 3D inner heliosphere. Solar active regions (ARs) are thought to be formed by magnetic fields from the convection zone. Our flux emergence simulations revealed that a strong horizontal divergent flow (HDF) of unmagnetized plasma appears at the photosphere before the flux begins to emerge. In our earlier study, we analyzed HMI data for a single AR and confirmed presence of this precursor plasma flow in the actual Sun. In this paper, as an extension of our earlier study, we conducted a statistical analysis of the HDFs to further investigate their characteristics and better determine the properties. From SDO/HMI data, we picked up 23 flux emergence events over a period of 14 months, the total flux of which ranges from 1020 to 1022 Mx. Out of 23 selected events, 6 clear HDFs were detected by the method we developed in our earlier study, and 7 HDFs detected by visual inspection were added to this statistic analysis. We found that the duration of the HDF is on average 61 minutes and the maximum HDF speed is on average 3.1 km s–1. We also estimated the rising speed of the subsurface magnetic flux to be 0.6-1.4 km s–1. These values are highly consistent with our previous one-event analysis as well as our simulation results. The observation results lead us to the conclusion that the HDF is a rather common feature in the earliest phase of AR emergence. Moreover, our HDF analysis has the capability of determining the subsurface properties of emerging fields that cannot be directly measured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
