Abstract

An overview is presented of the progress since 2021 in the construction and scientific programme preparation of the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility. Licensing for building construction has been granted at the end of 2021. Licensing for Cat. A radiologic source has been also granted in 2022. The construction of the toroidal field magnet system is progressing. The prototype of the 170 GHz gyrotron has been produced and it is now under test on the FALCON facility. The design of the vacuum vessel, the poloidal field coils and the civil infrastructures has been completed. The shape of the first DTT divertor has been agreed with EUROfusion to test different plasma and exhaust scenarios: single null, double null, X-divertor and negative triangularity plasmas. A detailed research plan is being elaborated with the involvement of the EUROfusion laboratories.

Abstract

The intrinsic poor loading of Ion Cyclotron (IC) plasma-facing antennas makes the use of Tuning and Matching Systems (TMSs) a necessity. The antenna plus TMS is a resonant system; in the TMS and access lines high voltages (tens of kV) must be accounted for in the unavoidable unmatched part of the feeding lines. In this work, we propose and test an innovative type of IC launcher; it is based on achieving resonance of the self-standing antenna, i.e. without the TMS. A mechanical full-metal tuning mechanism is described and demonstrated to allow wide-band operation. A systematic analysis of possible antenna topologies has led to identifying a structure that can allow good impedance matching along with compliance with maximum electric field constraints. Most of the design is carried out using a simplified plasma and a commercial analysis tool and then validated with a realistic plasma using TOPICA code.

Abstract

A new source for the TANDEM accelerator of LNS has been designed and installed. It is called NESTOR (Noble Elements Source for acceleraTORs) and consists of an ultra-compact ECR microwave discharge type ion source [1] operating around 6 GHz and up to 40 W of RF power, provided by a solid state power amplifier, coupled to a Li-Charge Exchange Cell (Li-CEC). It is engineered for the production of a wide range of 1+ and/or 1- ion beams from gaseous elements, in particular for noble gases. This work presents the characterization of the primary source and first operations of the whole setup on the HV platform (injector) of the Tandem. The He+ beams have been formerly characterized in terms of current, beam shape (by BaF2 beam viewers) and emittance (by the three-gradients method). Measurements have been carried out varying pressure, microwave frequency and RF power. Then, the source has been moved to the HV platform, coupled to the Li-CEC for first operations running in gas-exchange mode. Activities are ongoing to optimize beam transport towards the Tandem.

4. Experimental study of single- vs two-close-frequency heating impact on confinement and loss dynamics in ECR ion source plasmas by means of x-ray spectroscopy and imaging

Abstract

We hereby report a study on confinement and electron loss dynamics in the magnetic trap of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source using a special multi-diagnostic setup that has allowed the simultaneous collection of plasma radio-self-emission and x-ray images in the range 500 eV–20 keV. Argon plasmas were generated in single- and two-close-frequency heating (SFH and TCFH) modes. Evidence of turbulent regimes has been found: for stable and unstable configurations quantitative characterizations of the plasma radio self-emission have been carried out, then compared with local measurements of plasma energy content evaluated by x-ray imaging. This imaging method is the only one able to clearly separate x-ray radiation coming from the plasma from that coming from the plasma chamber walls. X-ray imaging has also been supported and benchmarked by volumetric spectroscopy performed via silicon drift and high-purity germanium detectors. The obtained results in terms of x-ray intensity signal coming from the plasma core and from the plasma chamber walls permit the estimation of the average ratio: plasma vs. walls (i.e. plasma losses) as a function of input RF power and pumping wave frequency, showing an evident increase (above the experimental errors) of the intensity in the 2–20 keV energy range due to the plasma losses in the case of unstable plasma. This ratio was well correlated with the strength of the instabilities, in SFH operation mode; in TCFH mode, under specific power balance conditions and frequency combinations, it was possible to damp the instabilities, and thus the plasma losses were observed to decrease and a general reconfiguration of the spatial plasma structure occurred (the x-ray emission was more concentrated in the center of the plasma chamber). Finally, a simplified model was used to simulate electron heating under different pumping frequencies, prompting discussion of the impact of velocity anisotropy vs the onset of the instability, and the mechanism of particle diffusion in the velocity space in stable and unstable regimes.

5. Quantitative analysis of an ECR Ar plasma structure by X-ray spectroscopy at high spatial resolution

Abstract

In the frame of the PANDORA_Gr3 project, aiming at measuring for the first time in-plasma nuclear β-decays of astrophysical interest, an innovative multi-diagnostic approach to correlate plasma parameters to nuclear activity has been proposed [1–3]. This is based on several detectors and techniques (optical emission spectroscopy, RF systems, interferopolarimetry) and here we focus on high resolution spatially-resolved X-ray spectroscopy, performed by means of a X-ray pin-hole camera setup sensitive in the 0.5–20 keV energy domain. We present measurements on an Ar plasma heated by Electron Cyclotron Resonance at the ECR-plasma lab of ATOMKI-Debrecen. The achieved spatial and energy resolution were 0.5 mm and 300 eV at 8 keV, respectively [4]. The new algorithm of analysis for single-photon-counted images has been developed allowing an investigation in High-Dynamic-Range (HDR) mode. Hence a spatially resolved quantitative characterization of plasma vs. plasma walls emitted spectra was done; the investigated electrons are the ones crucial for in-plasma ionization. Both stable and turbulent plasma regimes can be investigated.

Abstract

Pinhole and CCD based quasi-optical x-ray imaging technique was applied to investigate the plasma of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS). Spectrally integrated and energy resolved images were taken from an axial perspective. The comparison of integrated images taken of argon plasma highlights the structural changes affected by some ECRIS setting parameters, like strength of the axial magnetic confinement, RF frequency and microwave power. Photon counting analysis gives precise intensity distribution of the x-ray emitted by the argon plasma and by the plasma chamber walls. This advanced technique points out that the spatial positions of the electron losses are strongly determined by the kinetic energy of the electrons themselves to be lost and also shows evidences how strongly the plasma distribution is affected by slight changes in the RF frequency. Abstract

Electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS) are widely used plasma based machines for the production of intense ion beams in science and industry. The performance of modern devices is limited by the presence of the density cut-off, above which electromagnetic (EM) waves sustaining the plasma are reflected. We hereby discuss the systematic data analysis of electrostatic wave generation in an ECR prototype operating at 3.75 GHz–0.1 THz. In particular, electron Bernstein waves (EBW) have been excited. EBW have already been generated in large-scale plasma devices for thermonuclear fusion purposes. In ion sources where Lc ∼ λRF (Lc being the plasma chamber size and λRF the pumping wave wavelength) the EM field assumes a modal behaviour; thus both plasma and EM field self-organize so that no optical-like wave launching is possible (i.e. the cavity effect dominates on the optical path). The collected data, however, supported by 3D full-wave simulations, actually demonstrate that a Budden-type X-B conversion scenario can be established above some critical RF power thresholds, operating in an off-ECR regime. The generation and absorption of the EBW has been demonstrated by the presence of three peculiar signatures: along with the establishment of an overdense plasma, generation of supra-thermal electrons and modification (non-linear broadening) of the EM spectrum measured within the plasma have been observed. At the threshold establishing such a heating regime, the collected data provide evidence for a fast rotation of the electron fluid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
