Thermoelectric material SnSe has aroused world-wide interests in the past years, and its inherent strong lattice anharmonicity is regarded as a crucial factor for its outstanding thermoelectric performance. However, the understanding of lattice anharmonicity in SnSe system remains inadequate, especially regarding how phonon dynamics are affected by this behavior. In this work, we present a comprehensive study of lattice dynamics on Na0.003Sn0.997Se0.9S0.1 by means of neutron total scattering, inelastic neutron scattering, Raman spectroscopy as well as frozen-phonon calculations. Lattice anharmonicity is evidenced by pair distribution function, inelastic neutron scattering and Raman measurements. By separating the effects of thermal expansion and multi-phonon scattering, we found that the latter is very significant in high-energy optical phonon modes. The strong temperature-dependence of these phonon modes indicate the anharmonicity in this system. Moreover, our data reveals that the linewidths of high-energy optical phonons become broadened with mild doping of sulfur. Our studies suggest that the thermoelectric performance of SnSe could be further enhanced by reducing the contributions of high-energy optical phonon modes to the lattice thermal conductivity via phonon engineering. LaMnO3−δ (LMO) films with different oxygen contents are deposited on Epi-MgO/IBAD-MgO templates using reactive magnetron sputtering under varying temperatures and atmospheres. Subsequent YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films are grown on LMO layers by metal-organic deposition (MOD) method. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that YBCO texture cannot be further improved when the full width at half maximum (FWHM) values of LMO (011) φ-scans (evaluation on in-plane alignment) and LMO (002) ω-scans (evaluation on out-of-plane alignment) for LMO films are less than 8° and 4°, respectively. Sharp orientation with in-plane FWHM value of <3° for YBCO (103) φ-scan and out-of-plane FWHM value of <1.5° for YBCO (006) ω-scan can typically be achieved in YBCO films. Precise control of growth conditions, especially atmosphere, remains a feasible way to modify the surface of LMO films. It induces changes in oxygen content, lattice structure and surface morphology of LMO, and further affects the epitaxial growth of superconducting layers. Oxygen-deficient LMO with expanded lattice parameters and flat surface can effectively suppress the non-c-axis oriented YBCO, thereby enhancing the current carrying capability. The 500 m long YBCO coated conductors with conditioned LMO layers have an inductive critical current (Ic) ranging from 358 to 437 A/12 mm width with an average value of 398 A/12 mm width. Recently, a triboelectric generator (TEG) has been invented to convert mechanical energy into electricity by a conjunction of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Compared to the traditional electromagnetic generator (EMG) that produces a high output current but low voltage, the TEG has different output characteristics of low output current but high output voltage. In this paper, we present a comparative study regarding the fundamentals of TEGs and EMGs. The power output performances of the EMG and the TEG have a special complementary relationship, with the EMG being a voltage source and the TEG a current source. Utilizing a power transformed and managed (PTM) system, the current output of a TEG can reach as high as ∼3 mA, which can be coupled with the output signal of an EMG to enhance the output power. We also demonstrate a design to integrate a TEG and an EMG into a single device for simultaneously harvesting mechanical energy. A scheme for teleporting an arbitrary n-bit one-photon and vacuum entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state is proposed. In this scheme, the maximum entanglement GHZ state is used as a quantum channel. A single vortex is obtained in radio-frequency capacitive discharge in argon gas. The dust subsystem is confined in the horizontal plane with an asymmetrical saw structure placed on the lower electrode. The vortex rotates as a whole along the long side of the saw-teeth. Asymmetry of the saw structure plays an important role in the rotation of the vortex. Nonzero curl of the total force resulting from the local ion flow and the electric field in the plasma sheath could be attributed to the persistent rotation of vortex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pattern formations in an Oregonator model with superdiffusion are studied in two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations. Stability analyses are performed by applying Fourier and Laplace transforms to the space fractional reaction–diffusion systems. Antispiral, stable turing patterns, and travelling patterns are observed by changing the diffusion index of the activator. Analyses of Floquet multipliers show that the limit cycle solution loses stability at the wave number of the primitive vector of the travelling hexagonal pattern. Dust molecules are observed in a dusty plasma experiment. By using measurements with high spatial resolution, the formation and dissociation of the dust molecules are studied. The ion cloud in the wake of an upper dust grain attracts the lower dust grain nearby. When the interparticle distance between the upper dust grain and the lower one is less than a critical value, the two dust grains would form a dust molecule. The upper dust grain always leads the lower one as they travel. When the interparticle distance between them is larger than the critical value, the dust molecule would dissociate. Hypocycloid and epicycloid motions of irregular grains (pine pollen) are observed for the first time in a dust plasma in a two-dimensional (2D) horizontal plane. These cycloid motions can be regarded as a combination of a primary circle and a secondary circle. An inverse Magnus force originating from the spin of the irregular grain gives rise to the primary circle. Radial confinement resulting from the electrostatic force and the ion drag force, together with inverse Magnus force, plays an important role in the formation of the secondary circle. In addition, the cyclotron radius is seen to change periodically during the cycloid motion. Force analysis and comparison experiments have shown that the cycloid motions are distinctive features of an irregular grain immersed in a plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The screening current induced in superconductors can passively shield external magnetic fields and hence provide a noise free environment for precision sensors and instruments. This paper presents a novel design employing artificial joint-free REBCO (REBa2Cu3O7-x, RE: rare earths) coils which can economically extend the field shielding space for larger instruments, e.g. clinical equipment. We compared the shielding factors of single, double and multi-coils, and confirmed a coil with Helmholtz construction as the optimal architecture. Due to the zero resistance of the joint-free REBCO coils, the shielding effectiveness reaches 80 dB at the center of coils, shielding 99.99% of the external magnetic field of 10 μT at 1 × 10−5 Hz, and 40 dB (99%) in a greater spherical space of 40 mm in diameter. Additionally, the shielding effectiveness does not decrease in the external magnetic field of 1 nT. Such a low frequency magnetic shielding effect implies promising applications for the present work, such as preventing interference magnetic fields from precision instruments, which generally require field sensitivity as low as the fT · Hz−1/2 range. The b-delayed neutron and g energy spectra taken from the decay of neutron-rich nucleus 21N were measured by using the b-g and b - n coincidence detection method. Thirteen new neutron groups ranging from 0.28MeV to 4.98MeV and with a total branching ratio of 88.7 ± 4.2% were observed and presented. One g transition with an energy of 1222keV emitted from the excited state of 21O, and four g transitions with energies of 1674, 2397, 2780, and 3175keV emitted from the excited states of 20O were identified in the b decay chain of 21N. The b decay half-life for 21N is determined to be 82.9 ± 1.9 ms. The uncertainty of half-life is much smaller than the previous result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The inclusive differential cross sections of the 7Li nucleus in a reaction induced by 6He on a 9Be target are measured at an incident energy of 25 MeV/nucleon. Finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation calculations suggest that these 7Li particles are formed in a direct single-proton pickup reaction 9Be(6He,7Li)8Li. A practical interference lithography scheme based on surface plasmon polaritions (SPPs) is suggested. In this scheme, a micro-cylinder-lens array is employed to generate the evanescent wave (EW) carrying much energy. When the top of the cylinder lenses are in close contact with a metal film coated on a resist, the energy of EW will launch strong SPPs and form enhanced interference nanopatterns in the resist. The simulation results confirm that a high quality nanopattern with a critical dimension of l/7 can be achieved in the resistance. The analysis results indicate that the height of the cylinder lenses can provide a large tolerance to decrease the fabrication difficulty of this element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TianQin is a space-based laser interferometric gravitational wave detector aimed at detecting gravitational waves at low frequencies (0.1 mHz–1 Hz). It is formed by three identical drag-free spacecrafts in an equilateral triangular constellation orbiting around the Earth. The distance between each pair of spacecrafts is approximately . The spacecrafts are interconnected by infrared laser beams forming up to three Michelson-type interferometers. The detailed mission design and the study of science objectives for the TianQin project depend crucially on the orbit and the response of the detector. In this paper, we provide the analytic expressions for the coordinates of the orbit for each spacecraft in the heliocentric-ecliptic coordinate system to the leading orders. This enables a sufficiently accurate study of science objectives and data analysis, and serves as a first step to further orbit design and optimization. We calculate the response of a single Michelson detector to plane gravitational waves in arbitrary waveform which is valid in the full range of the sensitive frequencies. It is then used to generate the more realistic sensitivity curve of TianQin. We apply this model on a reference white-dwarf binary as a proof of principle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A power-transformed-and-managed triboelectric nanogenerator (PTM-TENG) is invented that is intended to give regulated power output for driving electronics. The design is based on a synchronized mechanical agitation that not only drives the TENG but also switches the connections for the capacitors for lowering the output voltage and increasing the output charges. An energy preservation efficiency of >95% was demonstrated. It is demonstrated that electrodeposition is a promising cost-effective technique to grow oxide buffer on metallic tapes. The resultant layer of CeO2 shows the biaxial texture of FWHM = 5.5° as well as a smooth surface of RMS = 2.0 nm, and YBa2Cu3O7−δ coated conductor with such a buffer exhibits the critical current density of 1.85 MA cm−2 at 77 K. Of more interest is that the CeO2 film thickness reaches a high value of more than 200 nm without any cracks, while it is very hard to achieve a thickness of more than 70 nm in the conventional vapor deposition methods employed.
