The observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will significantly increase the numbers of known extremely metal-poor stars by a factor of ∼10, improving the sample statistics to study the early chemical evolution of the Milky Way and the nature of the first stars. In this paper we report follow-up observations with high signal-to-noise ratio of nine metal-poor stars identified during the DESI commissioning with the Optical System for Imaging and Low-Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. The analysis of the data using a well-vetted methodology confirms the quality of the DESI spectra and the performance of the pipelines developed for the data reduction and analysis of DESI data. Ly α -emitting galaxies (LAEs) are easily detectable in the high-redshift universe and are potentially efficient tracers of large-scale structure at early epochs, as long as their observed properties do not depend strongly on environment. We investigate the luminosity and equivalent width functions of LAEs in the overdense field of a protocluster at redshift z ≃ 3.78. Using a large sample of LAEs (many spectroscopically confirmed), we find that the Ly α luminosity distribution is well represented by a Schechter function with log (L * / erg s âˆ' 1) = 43.26 âˆ' 0.22 + 0.20 and log (Ď• * / Mpc âˆ' 3) = âˆ' 3.40 âˆ' 0.04 + 0.03 with α = âˆ'1.5. Fitting the equivalent width distribution as an exponential, we find a scale factor of ω = 79 âˆ' 15 + 15 Ă.... We also measured the Ly α luminosity and equivalent width functions using the subset of LAEs lying within the densest cores of the protocluster, finding similar values for L * and ω. Hence, despite having a mean overdensity more than 2Ă— that of the general field, the shapes of the Ly α luminosity function and equivalent width distributions in the protocluster region are comparable to those measured in the field LAE population by other studies at similar redshift. While the observed Ly α luminosities and equivalent widths show correlations with the UV continuum luminosity in this LAE sample, we find that these are likely due to selection biases and are consistent with no intrinsic correlations within the sample. This protocluster sample supports the strong evolutionary trend observed in the Ly α escape fraction and suggests that LAEs at lower redshift can be on average significantly more dusty that their counterparts at higher redshift. We present a detailed characterization of the Ly α properties for 93 Ly α emitters (LAEs) at z ∼ 3.1 selected from the D1 field of the Canadaâ€"Franceâ€"Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey, including 24 members of a massive protocluster. The median-stacked Ly α image shows an extended Ly α halo (LAH) surrounding the galaxy with the exponential scale length 4.9 ± 0.7 kpc, which accounts for roughly half of the total line flux. Accounting for the LAH contribution, the total Ly α escape fraction, f esc, is 40% ± 26%. Combining the data set with existing measurements, we find a dependence of f esc on the galaxy’s UV slope (β) and UV luminosity (L UV). The simultaneous use of both parameters allows prediction of f esc within 0.18 dex, a substantial improvement over 0.23 dex when only β is used. The correlation between f esc and E (B âˆ' V) suggests that Ly α photons undergo interstellar dust attenuation in a similar manner to continuum photons. Yet, Ly α transmission is typically higher than that expected for continuum photons at a similar wavelength by a factor, which depends on UV luminosity, up to 2 in the samples we studied. These results hint at complex geometries and physical conditions of the interstellar medium, which affect the Ly α transmission or production. Alternatively, the dust law may change with luminosity leading to an over- or underestimation of f esc. Finally, we report that protocluster LAEs tend to be bluer and more UV luminous than their field cousins, resulting in systematically higher f esc values. We present neutral hydrogen (H i) observations using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) of 70 optically detected UDG candidates in the Coma region from the Systematically Measuring Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We detect H i in 18 targets, confirming nine to be gas-rich UDGs and the remainder to be foreground dwarfs. None of our H i -detected UDGs are Coma Cluster members and all but one are in low-density environments. The H i -detected UDGs are bluer and have more irregular morphologies than the redder, smoother candidates not detected in H i , with the combination of optical color and morphology being a better predictor of gas richness than either parameter alone. There is little visual difference between the gas-rich UDGs and the foreground dwarfs in the SMUDGes imaging, and distances are needed to distinguish between them. We find that the gas richnesses of our H i -confirmed UDGs and those from other samples scale with their effective radii in two stellar mass bins, possibly providing clues to their formation. We attempt to place our UDGs on the baryonic Tully–Fisher relation (BTFR) using optical ellipticities and turbulence-corrected H i line widths to estimate rotation velocities, but the potential systematics associated with fitting smooth Sérsic profiles to clumpy, low-inclination disks of low surface brightness precludes a meaningful analysis of potential BTFR offsets. These observations are a pilot for a large campaign now under way at the GBT to use the H i properties of gas-rich UDGs to quantitatively constrain how these galaxies form and evolve. Modern spectroscopic surveys produce large spectroscopic databases, generally with sizes well beyond the scope of manual investigation. The need arises, therefore, for an automated line detection method with objective indicators for detection significance. In this paper, we present an automated and objective method for emission line detection in spectroscopic surveys and apply this technique to observed spectra from a Lya emitter survey at z ~ 2.7, obtained with the Hectospec spectrograph on the MMT Observatory (MMTO). The basic idea is to generate on-source (signal plus noise) and off-source (noise only) mock observations using Monte Carlo simulations, and calculate completeness and reliability values, (C,R), for each simulated signal. By comparing the detections from real data with the Monte Carlo results, we assign the completeness and reliability values to each real detection. From 1574 spectra, we obtain 881 raw detections and, by removing low reliability detections, we finalize 652 detections from an automated pipeline. Most of high completeness and reliability detections, (C,R)≈(1.0,1.0), are robust detections when visually inspected, the low C and R detections are also marginal on visual inspection. We present IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations of the CO(3-2) and CO(5-4) line transitions from an Lyα blob at z ∼ 2.7 in order to investigate the gas kinematics, determine the location of the dominant energy source, and study the physical conditions of the molecular gas. CO line and dust continuum emissions are detected at the location of a strong MIPS source that is offset by ∼1.″5 from the Lyα peak. Neither of these emission components is resolved with the 1.″7 beam, showing that the gas and dust are confined to within ∼7 kpc from this galaxy. No millimeter source is found at the location of the Lyα peak, ruling out a central compact source of star formation as the power source for the Lyα emission. Combined with a spatially resolved spectrum of Lyα and He II, we constrain the kinematics of the extended gas using the CO emission as a tracer of the systemic redshift. Near the MIPS source, the Lyα profile is symmetric, and its line center agrees with that of the CO line, implying that there are no significant bulk flows and that the photo-ionization from the MIPS source might be the dominant source of the Lyα emission. In the region near the Lyα peak, the gas is slowly receding (∼100 km s–1) with respect to the MIPS source, thus making the hyper-/superwind hypothesis unlikely. We find a sub-thermal line ratio between two CO transitions, ICO(5-4)/ICO(3-2) = 0.97 ± 0.21. This line ratio is lower than the average values found in high-z submillimeter galaxies and QSOs but is consistent with the value found in the Galactic center, suggesting that there is a large reservoir of low-density molecular gas that is spread over the MIPS source and its vicinity. We analyze the star formation properties of 16 infrared-selected, spectroscopically confirmed galaxy clusters at 1 < z < 1.5 from the Spitzer/IRAC Shallow Cluster Survey (ISCS). We present new spectroscopic confirmation for six of these high-redshift clusters, five of which are at z > 1.35. Using infrared luminosities measured with deep Spitzer/Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer observations at 24 μm, along with robust optical + IRAC photometric redshifts and spectral-energy-distribution-fitted stellar masses, we present the dust-obscured star-forming fractions, star formation rates, and specific star formation rates in these clusters as functions of redshift and projected clustercentric radius. We find that z ∼ 1.4 represents a transition redshift for the ISCS sample, with clear evidence of an unquenched era of cluster star formation at earlier times. Beyond this redshift, the fraction of star-forming cluster members increases monotonically toward the cluster centers. Indeed, the specific star formation rate in the cores of these distant clusters is consistent with field values at similar redshifts, indicating that at z > 1.4 environment-dependent quenching had not yet been established in ISCS clusters. By combining these observations with complementary studies showing a rapid increase in the active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction, a stochastic star formation history, and a major merging episode at the same epoch in this cluster sample, we suggest that the starburst activity is likely merger-driven and that the subsequent quenching is due to feedback from merger-fueled AGNs. The totality of the evidence suggests we are witnessing the final quenching period that brings an end to the era of star formation in galaxy clusters and initiates the era of passive evolution. We present a deep LBT/LBC Uspec-band imaging survey (9 deg2) covering the NOAO Boötes field. A total of 14,485 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 3 are selected, which are used to measure the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF). The large sample size and survey area reduce the LF uncertainties due to Poisson statistics and cosmic variance by ⩾3 compared to previous studies. At the bright end, the LF shows excess power compared to the best-fit Schechter function, which can be attributed to the contribution of z ~ 3 quasars. We compute the rest-frame near-infrared LF and stellar mass function (SMF) of z ~ 3 LBGs based on the R-band and [4.5μm]-band flux relation. We investigate the evolution of the UV LFs and SMFs between z ~ 7 and z ~ 3, which supports a rising star formation history in the LBGs. We study the spatial correlation function of two bright LBG samples and estimate their average host halo mass. We find a tight relation between the host halo mass and the galaxy star formation rate (SFR), which follows the trend predicted by the baryonic accretion rate onto the halo, suggesting that the star formation in LBGs is fueled by baryonic accretion through the cosmic web. By comparing the SFRs with the total baryonic accretion rates, we find that cosmic star formation efficiency is about 5%-20% and it does not evolve significantly with redshift, halo mass, or galaxy luminosity. We present a measurement of the average supermassive black hole accretion rate (BHAR) as a function of the star formation rate (SFR) for galaxies in the redshift range 0.25 < z < 0.8. We study a sample of 1767 far-IR-selected star-forming galaxies in the 9 deg2 Boötes multi-wavelength survey field. The SFR is estimated using 250 μm observations from the Herschel Space Observatory, for which the contribution from the active galactic nucleus (AGN) is minimal. In this sample, 121 AGNs are directly identified using X-ray or mid-IR selection criteria. We combined these detected AGNs and an X-ray stacking analysis for undetected sources to study the average BHAR for all of the star-forming galaxies in our sample. We find an almost linear relation between the average BHAR (in M☉ yr-1) and the SFR (in M☉ yr-1) for galaxies across a wide SFR range 0.85 < log SFR < 2.56 : logBHAR = (-3.72 ± 0.52) + (1.05 ± 0.33) log SFR. This global correlation between SFR and average BHAR is consistent with a simple picture in which SFR and AGN activity are tightly linked over galaxy evolution timescales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Keck DEIMOS spectroscopic observations of the most UV-luminous star-forming galaxies at redshifts 3.2 < z < 4.6. Our sample, selected in the Boötes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey, contains galaxies with luminosities of L" ≲ LUV ≲ 7L " and is one of the largest samples to date of the most UV-luminous galaxies at these redshifts. Our spectroscopic data confirm 41 candidates as star-forming galaxies at 3.2 < z < 4.6 and validate the relatively clean selection of the photometric candidates with a contamination rate of 11%-28%. We find that the fraction of Lyα emitting galaxies increases with decreasing UV luminosity. None of the 12 galaxies with MUV < -22 (i.e., LUV > 3L") exhibit strong Lyα emission. We find strong evidence of large-scale outflows, transporting the neutral/ionized gas in the interstellar medium away from the galaxy. Galaxies exhibiting both interstellar absorption and Lyα emission lines show a significant offset between the two features, with a relative velocity of 200-1150 km s-1. We find tentative evidence that this measure of the outflow velocity increases with UV luminosity and/or stellar mass. The luminosity- and mass-dependent outflow strengths suggest that the efficiency of feedback and enrichment of the surrounding medium depend on these galaxy parameters. We also stack the individual spectra to construct composite spectra of the absorption-line-only and Lyα-emitting subsets of the UV luminous galaxies at z ≃ 3.7. The composite spectra are very similar to those of lower-redshift and lower-luminosity Lyman break galaxy (LBG) samples, but with some subtle differences. Analyses of the composite spectra suggest that the UV luminous LBGs at z ≃ 3.7 may have a higher covering fraction of absorbing gas, and may be older (or have had more prolonged star formation histories) than their lower-redshift and lower-luminosity counterparts. In addition, we have discovered that five galaxies in the sample belong to a massive overdensity at z = 3.78. Finally, two galaxies each show two distinct sets of interstellar absorption features. The latter may be a sign of a final stage of major merger, or clumpy disk formation. These systems are not expected in our sample: their presence implies that the frequency of such sources among our luminous z ≃ 3.7 LBGs may be an order of magnitude higher than in lower-redshift and lower-luminosity samples. We use mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph to study the nature of starformation and supermassive black hole accretion for a sample of 65 IR-luminous galaxies at 0.02 < z < 0.6 with F(24μm) > 1.2mJy. The MIR spectra cover wavelengths 5–38 μm, spanning the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features and important atomic diagnostic lines. Our sample of galaxies corresponds to a range of total IR luminosity, LIR = L(8–1000 μm) = 1010–1012 L⊙ (median LIR of 3.0 × 1011 L⊙). We divide our sample into a subsample of galaxies with Spitzer Infrared Array Camera 3.6–8.0 μm colors indicative of warm dust heated by an active galactic nucleus (AGN; IRAGN) and those galaxies whose colors indicate star-formation processes (non-IRAGN). Compared to the non-IRAGN, the IRAGN show smaller PAH emission equivalent widths, which we attribute to an increase in mid-IR continuum from the AGN. We find that in both the IRAGN and star-forming samples, the luminosity in the PAH features correlates strongly with [Ne II] λ12.8 μm emission line, from which we conclude that the PAH luminosity directly traces the instantaneous star-formation rate (SFR) in both the IRAGN and star-forming galaxies.We compare the ratio of PAH luminosity to the total IR luminosity, and we show that for most IRAGN star-formation accounts for 10%–50% of the total IR luminosity. We also find no measurable difference between the PAH luminosity ratios of L11.3/L7.7 and L6.2/L7.7 for the IRAGN and non-IRAGN, suggesting that AGN do not significantly excite or destroy PAH molecules on galaxy-wide scales. Interestingly, a small subset of galaxies (8 of 65 galaxies) show a strong excess of [Oiv] λ25.9 μm emission compared to their PAH emission, which indicates the presence of heavily-obscured AGN, including 3 galaxies that are not otherwise selected as IRAGN. The low PAH emission and low [Ne ii] emission of the IRAGN and [O iv]-excess objects imply the IR luminosity of these objects is dominated by processes associated with the AGN. Because these galaxies lie in the "green valley" of the optical color–magnitude relation and have low implied SFRs, we argue their hosts have declining SFRs and these objectswill transition to the red sequence unless some process restarts their star-formation. Giant Lyα nebulae (or Lyα "blobs") are likely sites of ongoing massive galaxy formation, but the rarity of these powerful sources has made it difficult to form a coherent picture of their properties, ionization mechanisms, and space density. Systematic narrowband Lyα nebula surveys are ongoing, but the small redshift range covered and the observational expense limit the comoving volume that can be probed by even the largest of these surveys and pose a significant problem when searching for such rare sources. We have developed a systematic search technique designed to find large Lyα nebulae at 2 ... ȥ ... 3 within deep broadband imaging and have carried out a survey of the 9.4 deg² NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey Boötes field. With a total survey comoving volume of ≈ 108 h70-3 Mpc³, this is the largest volume survey for Lyα nebulae ever undertaken. In this first paper in the series, we present the details of the survey design and a systematically selected sample of 79 candidates, which includes one previously discovered Lyα nebula. The study of Lyα emission in the high-redshift universe is a useful probe of the epoch of reionization, as the Lyα line should be attenuated by the intergalactic medium (IGM) at low to moderate neutral hydrogen fractions. Here we present the results of a deep and wide imaging search for Lyα emitters in the Cosmological Evolution Survey field. We have used two ultra-narrowband filters (filter width of ~8-9 Å) on the NOAO Extremely Wide-Field Infrared Mosaic camera, installed on the Mayall 4 m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, in order to isolate Lyα emitters at z = 7.7; such ultra-narrowband imaging searches have proved to be excellent at detecting Lyα emitters. We found 5σ detections of four candidate Lyα emitters in a survey volume of 2.8 x 104 Mpc³ (total survey area ~760 arcmin²). Each candidate has a line flux greater than 8 x 10-18 erg s-1 cm-2. Using these results to construct a luminosity function and comparing to previously established Lyα luminosity functions at z = 5.7 and z = 6.5, we find no conclusive evidence for evolution of the luminosity function between z = 5.7 and z =7.7. Statistical Monte Carlo simulations suggest that half of these candidates are real z = 7.7 targets, and spectroscopic follow-up will be required to verify the redshift of these candidates. However, our results are consistent with no strong evolution in the neutral hydrogen fraction of the IGM between z = 5.7 and z = 7.7, even if only one or two of the z = 7.7 candidates are spectroscopically confirmed. The Spitzer Space Telescope has identified a population of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z ~ 2 that may play an important role in the evolution of massive galaxies. We measure the stellar masses (M∗) of two populations of Spitzer-selected ULIRGs that have extremely red R - [24] colors (dust-obscured galaxies, or DOGs) and compare our results with submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs). One set of 39 DOGs has a local maximum in their mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) at rest frame 1.6 µm associated with stellar emission ("bump DOGs"), while the other set of 51 DOGs have power-law mid-IR SEDs that are typical of obscured active galactic nuclei ("power-law DOGs"). We measure M∗ by applying Charlot & Bruzual stellar population synthesis models to broadband photometry in the rest-frame ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared of each of these populations. Assuming a simple stellar population and a Chabrier initial mass function, we find that power-law DOGs and bump DOGs are on average a factor of 2 and 1.5 more massive than SMGs, respectively (median and inter-quartile M∗ values for SMGs, bump DOGs, and power-law DOGs are log(M∗/M⊙) = Due to image rights restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed., and Due to image rights restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed. respectively). More realistic star formation histories drawn from two competing theories for the nature of ULIRGs at z ~ 2 (major merger versus smooth accretion) can increase these mass estimates by up to 0.5 dex. A comparison of our stellar masses with the instantaneous star formation rate (SFR) in these z ~ 2 ULIRGs provides a preliminary indication supporting high SFRs for a given M∗, a situation that arises more naturally in major mergers than in smooth accretion-powered systems. In order to constrain the bolometric luminosities, dust properties, and molecular gas content of giant Lyα nebulae, the so-called Lyα blobs, we have carried out a study of dust continuum and CO line emission in two well-studied representatives of this population at z ~ 3: an Lyα blob discovered by its strong Spitzer Multiband Infrared Photometer 24 µm detection (LABd05) and the Steidel blob 1 (SSA22-LAB01). We find that the spectral energy distribution of LABd05 is well described by an active-galactic-nucleus--starburst composite template with LFIR = (4.0 ± 0.5) x 1012 L⊙, comparable to high-z submillimeter galaxies and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. New Large APEX Bolometer Camera 870 µm measurements rule out the reported Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array detection of the SSA22-LAB01 (S850 µm = 16.8 mJy) at the >4σ level. Consistent with this, ultradeep Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations with ~2" spatial resolution also fail to detect any 1.2 mm continuum source down to ≈0.45 mJy beam-1 (3σ). Combined with the existing (sub)millimeter observations in the literature, we conclude that the FIR luminosity of SSA22-LAB01 remains uncertain. No CO line is detected in either case down to integrated flux limits of SvΔV ≲ 0.25-1.0 Jy km s-1, indicating a modest molecular gas reservoir, M(H2) < (1-3) x 1010 M⊙. The non-detections exclude, with high significance (12σ), the previous tentative detection of a CO J = 4-3 line in the SSA22-LAB01. The increased sensitivity afforded by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array will be critical in studying molecular gas and dust in these interesting systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the average physical properties and star formation histories (SFHs) of the most UV-luminous star- forming galaxies at z ~ 3.7. Our results are based on the average spectral energy distributions (SEDs), constructed from stacked optical-to-infrared photometry, of a sample of the 1913 most UV-luminous star-forming galaxies found in 5.3 deg2 of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We find that the shape of the average SED in the rest optical and infrared is fairly constant with UV luminosity, i.e., more UV-luminous galaxies are, on average, also more luminous at longer wavelengths. In the rest UV, however, the spectral slope β (≅dlogFλ/dlogλ; measured at 0.13 μm <λrest < 0.28μm) rises steeply with the median UV luminosity from -1.8 at L ≈ L* to -1.2 (L ~ 4-5L*). We use population synthesis analyses to derive their average physical properties and find that (I) LUV and thus star formation rates (SFRs) scale closely with stellar mass such that more UV-luminous galaxies are also more massive, (2) the median ages indicate that the stellar populations are relatively young (200-400 Myr) and show little correlation with UV luminosity, and (3) more UV-luminous galaxies are dustier than their less- luminous counterparts, such that L ≈ 4-5L* galaxies are extincted up to A(1600) = 2 mag while L ≈ L* galaxies have A(1600) = 0.7-1.5 mag. We argue that the average SFHs of UV-luminous galaxies are better described by models in which SFR increases with time in order to simultaneously reproduce the tight correlation between the UV-derived SFR and stellar mass and their universally young ages. We demonstrate the potential of measurements of the SFR-M* relation at multiple redshifts to discriminate between simple models of SFHs.
