Abstract

We have fabricated and analyzed submicron YBa2Cu3O7-x grain boundary Josephson junctions grown on [100] tilt SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates. We present an experiment sensitive to the amplitude of the order parameter. To this aim, we have measured electrical properties of [100] tilt bicrystal YBa2Cu3O7-x grain boundary junctions with nominal widths of 700 nm and 300 nm. Junctions are fabricated so that positive lobes of the d-wave electrodes face one another (d0-d0 junction). We demonstrate that, in such devices, the temperature dependences of the critical current may be accounted for by very high-transparency junction barriers, in which the influence of nodes in the pair potential is an essential element. We based our analysis on a recent theoretical model that, starting from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, takes into account the presence of Andreev bound states in layered superconductors, with Cu-O planes tilted with respect the substrate plane, as is the case of [100] tilt grain boundary junctions. Abstract

Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) can be described as a non-invasive metrological tool for inspection and characterization of microelectromechanical structures (MEMS). DHM is a quick, non-contact and non-invasive technique that can offer a high resolution in both lateral and vertical directions. It has been employed for the characterization of the undesired out-of-plane deformations due to the residual stresses introduced by technological processes. The characterization of these deformations is helpful in studying and understanding the effect of residual stress on the deformation of a single microstructure. To that end, MEMS with different geometries and shapes, such as cantilever beams, bridges and membranes, have been characterized. Moreover, DHM has been applied efficiently to evaluate variations of the structure profile due to some external effects. As an example, the characterization of a cantilever subjected to a thermal process has been described. The results reported show that DHM is a useful non-invasive method for characterizing and developing reliable MEMS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We carry out a stability analysis of a relativistic nonlaminar electron beam which is experiencing the self-consistent plasma wake field excitation. This is done in overdense regime (i.e. plasma density much greater than beam density) in a cold plasma. We adopt the self-consistent kinetic model for the plasma wake field excitation, that is based on the pair of Vlasov-Poisson-type equations. The latter governs the phase-space spatiotemporal evolution of the beam and its linearized form leads to a Landau-type approach to the beam stability analysis. Thereby, the analysis, performed for the case of a Gaussian electron beam distribution, shows the existence of the unstable modes for both cold and warm beams, respectively.

Abstract

In this paper, by using an analogy among {\it quantum mechanics}, {\it electromagnetic beam optics in optical fibers}, and {\it charge particle beam dynamics}, we introduce the concept of {\it coherent states} for charged particle beams in the framework of the {\it Thermal Wave Model} (TWM). We give a physical meaning of the Gaussian-like coherent structures of charged particle distribution that are both naturally and artificially produced in an accelerating machine in terms of the concept of coherent states widely used in quantum mechanics and in quantum optics. According to TWM, this can be done by using a Schr\"{o}dinger-like equation for a complex function, the so-called {\it beam wave function} (BWF), whose squared modulus is proportional to the transverse beam density profile, where Planck's constant and the time are replaced by the transverse beam emittance and by the propagation coordinate, respectively. The evolution of the particle beam, whose initial BWF is assumed to be the simplest coherent state (ground-like state) associated with the beam, in an infinite 1-D quadrupole-like device with small sextupole and octupole aberrations, is analytically and numerically investigated., Comment: 21 pages, Latex
