A novel data acquisition approach to test hermetic reciprocating compressors is presented. A non-uniformly sampled application of a ΣΔ analogue-to-digital converter was used to investigate the compressor pV diagram, together with accurate spectral analysis of pressure readings. Several previous approaches are presented and compared with the one proposed here. Different statistical comparisons have been carried out with the main objective of demonstrating the good performance of the proposal.

Suction and discharge processes with self actuated valves have a major influence in efficiency and reliability of hermetic reciprocating compressors. Understanding the operation completely in order to enhance compressor's design needs precise prediction of the fluid-structure interaction complexities involved in these processes. This paper presents a comprehensive description of a numerical methodology to account for the coupled behaviour of a reed valve and a turbulent flow. The method is based on a partitioned semi-implicit scheme that only strongly couples the fluid pressure term to the structural solver. A three-dimensional CFD analysis with LES turbulence modelling is used for the flow while a combination of plate theory and mode summation method is used for the solid. The dynamically changing domains are tackled by means of lagrangian and arbitrary lagrangian-eulerian approaches for the solid and the fluid, respectively. The whole model is compared with experimental data at Reynolds number 10, 000, showing good agreement in lift amplitude and deformation fluctuations. Finally, as an illustrative case, results regarding lift, pressures, force and effective areas are compared with those of a valve with wider gland.

The objective of the present work is to validate the compressible Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) models implemented in the in house parallel unstructured CFD code TermoFluids. Our research team has implemented and tested several LES models over the past years for the incompressible regimen. In order to be able to solve complex turbulent compressible flows, the models are revisited and modified if necessary. In addition, the performance of the implemented hybrid advection scheme is an issue of interest for the numerical simulation of turbulent compressible flows. The models are tested in the well known turbulent channel flow problem at different compressible regimens.

This work aims at modelling the flow behavior past a wind turbine dedicated airfoil at high Reynolds number and large angle of attack (AoA). The DU-93-W-210 airfoil has been selected. To do this, Large Eddy Simulations (LES) have been performed. Momentum equations have been solved with a parallel unstructured symmetry preserving formulation while the wall-adapting local-eddy viscosity model within a variational multi-scale framework (VMS- WALE) is used as the subgrid-scales model. Since LES calculations are still very expensive at high Reynolds Number, specially at the near-wall region, a dynamic wall model has been implemented in order to overcome this limitation. The model has been validated with a very unresolved Channel Flow case at Reτ = 2000. Afterwards, the model is also tested with the Ahmed Car case, that from the flow physics point of view is more similar to an stalled airfoil than the Channel Flow is, including flow features as boundary layer detachment and recirculations. This case has been selected because experimental results of mean velocity profiles are available. Finally, a flow around a DU-93-W-210 airfoil is computed at Re = 3 x 106 and with an AoA of 15°. Numerical results are presented in comparison with Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) or experimental data for all cases.

The aim of this work is to provide numerical solutions for the fluid flow and the heat transfer generated in closed systems containing viscoplastic-type non-Newtonian fluids. A lid driven cavity (LDC) and a differentially heated cavity (DHC) are used as test cases. These numerical solutions can be an appropriate tool for verifying CFD codes which have been developed or adapted to deal with this kind of non-Newtonian fluids. In order to achieve this objective, an in-house CFD code has been implemented and correctly verified by the method of manufactured solutions and by some numerical solutions too. Furthermore, a high-performance CFD code (Termo Fluids S.L.) has been adapted and properly verified, by the corresponding numerical solutions, to deal with this kind of non-Newtonian fluids. The viscoplastic behaviour of certain non-Newtonian fluids will be generated from a viscous stress which has been defined by a potential-type rheological law. The pseudoplastic and dilatant behaviours will be studied. On this matter, the influence of different physical aspects on the numerical simulations will be analysed, e.g. different exponent values in the potential-type rheological law and different values of the non-dimensional numbers. Moreover, the influence of different numerical aspects on the numerical simulations will also be analysed, e.g. unstructured meshes, conservative numerical schemes and more efficient and parallel algorithms and solvers.

Flow around cylindrical structures is of relevance for many practical applications. Knowledge of flow-related unsteady loading of such structures is crucial for hydro - and aerodynamic control and design. In order to obtain a deeper knowledge of this kind of flow, a DNS have been performed at ReD = 3900 (ReD = UrefD/ν). The instantaneous velocity signals of probes located in the separated shear-layer and in the vortex formation region exhibit the presence of low-frequency variations. The statistical analysis of these signals suggest that low-frequency variations in the vortex formation length, suction base pressure and intermittencies in the shear layer are closely related. It is shown that these variations are the responsible of the large scattering of data obtained in different experimental and numerical results, as well as the U-shape and V-shape stream-wise velocity profiles observed in the very near wake of the cylinder.
