Parker Solar Probe measurements have recently shown that coherent fast magnetosonic and Alfvén ion-cyclotron waves are abundant in the solar wind and can be accompanied by higher-frequency electrostatic fluctuations. In this Letter we reveal the nonlinear process capable of channelling the energy of low-frequency electromagnetic to higher-frequency electrostatic fluctuations observed on board Parker Solar Probe. We present Hall-MHD simulations demonstrating that low-frequency electromagnetic fluctuations can resonate with the ion-sound mode, which results in steepening of plasma density fluctuations, electrostatic spikes, and harmonics in the electric field spectrum. The resonance can occur around the wavenumber determined by the ratio between local sound and Alfvén speeds, but only in the case of oblique propagation to the background magnetic field. The resonance wavenumber, its width, and steepening timescale are estimated, and all indicate that the revealed two-wave resonance can frequently occur in the solar wind. This process can be a potential channel of energy transfer from cyclotron resonant ions producing the electromagnetic fluctuations to Landau resonant ions and electrons absorbing the energy of the higher-frequency electrostatic fluctuations.

We study intermittent coherent structures in solar wind turbulence from MHD to kinetic plasma scales using Parker Solar Probe data during its first perihelion (at 0.17 au) in the highly Alfvénic slow solar wind. We detect coherent structures using Morlet wavelets. For the first time, we apply a multiscale analysis in physical space. At MHD scales within the inertial range, times scales τ ∈ (1, 10 ^2 ) s, we find (i) current sheets including switchback boundaries and (ii) Alfvén vortices. Within these events are embedded structures at smaller scales: typically Alfvén vortices at ion scales, τ ∈ (0.08, 1) s, and compressible vortices at sub-ion scales, τ ∈ 8(10 ^−3 , 10 ^−2 ) s. The number of coherent structures grows toward smaller scales: we observe ∼200 events during a 5 hr time interval at MHD scales, ∼10 ^3 at ion scales, and ∼10 ^4 at sub-ion scales. In general, there are multiple structures of ion and sub-ion scales embedded within one MHD structure. There are also examples of ion and sub-ion scale structures outside MHD structures. To quantify the relative importance of different types of structures, we do a statistical comparison of the observed structures with the expectations of models of the current sheets and vortices. The results show the dominance of Alfvén vortices at all scales in contrast to the widespread view of the dominance of current sheets. This means that Alfvén vortices are important building blocks of Alfvénic solar wind turbulence.

Magnetic reconnection is one of the most universal processes in space plasma that is responsible for charged particle acceleration and the mixing and heating of plasma populations. In this paper we consider a triggering process of reconnection that is driven by interaction of two discontinuities: solar wind rotational discontinuity and tangential discontinuity at Earth’s magnetospheric boundary, the magnetopause. Combining multispacecraft measurements and global hybrid simulations, we show that solar wind discontinuities may drive the magnetopause reconnection and cause the mixing of the solar wind and magnetosphere plasmas around the magnetopause, well downstream of the solar wind flow. Since large-amplitude discontinuities are frequently observed in the solar wind and predicted for various stellar winds, our results of reconnection driven by the discontinuity–discontinuity interaction may have a broad application beyond the magnetosphere.

The investigation of mechanisms responsible for the heating of cold solar wind electrons around the Earth’s bow shock is an important problem in heliospheric plasma physics because such heating is vitally required to run the shock drift acceleration at the bow shock. The prospective mechanism for electron heating is magnetic pumping, which considers electron adiabatic (compressional) heating by ultralow-frequency waves and simultaneous scattering by high-frequency fluctuations. Existing models of magnetic pumping have operated with external sources of such fluctuations. In this study, we generalize these models by introducing the self-consistent electron scattering by whistler-mode waves generated due to the anisotropic electron heating process. We consider an electron population captured within a magnetic trap created by ultralow-frequency waves. Periodical adiabatic heating and cooling of this population drives the generation of whistler-mode waves scattering electrons in the pitch-angle space. The combination of adiabatic heating and whistler-driven scattering provides electron acceleration and the formation of a suprathermal electron population that can further participate in the shock drift acceleration.

Solar wind magnetic field fluctuations exhibit a complex multiscale nature, often encompassing ion-scale discontinuities and MHD-scale Alfvénic fluctuations. Both of these types of structures are thought to play a critical role in plasma heating and turbulence dissipation. Here we comparatively analyze the plasma pressure anisotropies within discontinuities and adjacent Alfvénic fluctuations, leveraging unique solar wind observations from orbit conjunctions between the ARTEMIS and WIND missions, along the same flow streamline, though about 150 Earth radii apart. Based on 11 cases of such observations, we compare direct measurements of plasma anisotropy from particle instruments with its estimates from anisotropic MHD theory using the ratios of correlated ion velocity and Alfvén speed variations Δ v _i /Δ v _A . We find that (1) sporadically observed discontinuities associated with bifurcated reconnection current sheets harbor significant parallel electron anisotropies of >0.2; (2) direct electron measurements in all events reveal a median anisotropy of ∼0.07 for Alfvénic fluctuations and ∼0.17 for discontinuities; (3) anisotropic MHD predicts even more disparate total anisotropies within Alfvénic fluctuations and discontinuities, with a median value of ∼0.15 for the former and ∼0.57 for the latter; (4) the differences between theory-predicted and directly measured anisotropies imply that the ion contribution to anisotropy is significant and likely dominant within both types of structures, an assertion which we partly verify using simultaneous ion measurements from WIND. Our observations confirm that such discontinuities play a uniquely important role in producing solar wind plasma heating and anisotropy.

We present particle-in-cell simulations of a combined whistler heat flux and temperature anisotropy instability that is potentially operating in the solar wind. The simulations are performed in a uniform plasma and initialized with core and halo electron populations typical of the solar wind beyond about 0.3 au. We demonstrate that the instability produces whistler-mode waves propagating both along (anti-sunward) and opposite (sunward) to the electron heat flux. The saturated amplitudes of both sunward and anti-sunward whistler waves are strongly correlated with their initial linear growth rates, ${B}_{w}/{B}_{0}\sim {(\gamma /{\omega }_{{ce}})}^{\nu }$ , where for typical electron betas we have 0.6 ≲ ν ≲ 0.9. We show that because of the relatively large spectral width of the whistler waves, the instability saturates through the formation of quasi-linear plateaus around the resonant velocities. The revealed correlations of whistler wave amplitudes and spectral widths with electron beta and temperature anisotropy are consistent with solar wind observations. We show that anti-sunward whistler waves result in an electron heat flux decrease, while sunward whistler waves actually lead to an electron heat flux increase. The net effect is the electron heat flux suppression, whose efficiency is larger for larger electron betas and temperature anisotropies. The electron heat flux suppression can be up to 10%–60% provided that the saturated whistler wave amplitudes exceed about 1% of the background magnetic field. The experimental applications of the presented results are discussed.

The exploration of the inner heliosphere by the Parker Solar Probe has revealed a highly structured solar wind with ubiquitous deflections from the Parker spiral, known as switchbacks. Interchange reconnection (IR) may play an important role in generating these switchbacks, by forming unstable particle distributions that generate wave activity that in turn may evolve to such structures. IR occurs in very low-beta plasmas and in the presence of strong guiding fields. Although IR is unlikely to release enough energy to provide an important contribution to the heating and acceleration of the solar wind, it affects the way the solar wind is connected to its sources, connecting open field lines to regions of closed fields. This “switching on” provides a mechanism by which the plasma near coronal hole boundaries can mix with that trapped inside the closed loops. This mixing can lead to a new energy balance. It may significantly change the characteristics of the solar wind because this plasma is already preheated and can potentially have quite different density and particle distributions. It not only replenishes the solar wind, but also affects the electric field, which in turn affects the energy balance. This interpenetration is manifested by the formation of a bimodal ion distribution, with a core and a beam-like population. Such distributions are indeed frequently observed by the Parker Solar Probe. Here we provide a first step toward assessing the role of such processes in accelerating and heating the solar wind.

Shock waves are sites of intense plasma heating and charged particle acceleration. In collisionless solar wind plasmas, such acceleration is attributed to shock drift or Fermi acceleration but also to wave–particle resonant interactions. We examine the latter for the case of electrons interacting with one of the most commonly observed wave modes in shock environments, the whistler mode. Such waves are particularly intense in dynamic, localized regions upstream of shocks, arising from the kinetic interaction of the shock with solar wind discontinuities. These regions, known as foreshock transients, are also sites of significant electron acceleration by mechanisms not fully understood. Using in situ observations of such transients in the Earth’s foreshock, we demonstrate that intense whistler-mode waves can resonate nonlinearly with >25 eV solar wind electrons and accelerate them to ∼100–500 eV. This acceleration is mostly effective for the 50–250 eV energy range, where the accelerated electron population exhibits a characteristic butterfly pitch-angle distribution consistent with theoretical predictions. Such nonlinear resonant acceleration is very fast, implying that this mechanism may be important for injecting suprathermal electrons of solar wind origin into the shock region, where they can undergo further, efficient shock-drift acceleration to even higher energies.

Force-free current sheets are local plasma structures with field-aligned electric currents and approximately uniform plasma pressures. Such structures, widely found throughout the heliosphere, are sites for plasma instabilities and magnetic reconnection, the growth rate of which is controlled by the structure’s current-sheet configuration. Despite the fact that many kinetic equilibrium models have been developed for one-dimensional force-free current sheets, their two-dimensional (2D) counterparts, which have a magnetic field component normal to the current sheets, have not received sufficient attention to date. Here, using particle-in-cell simulations, we search for such 2D force-free current sheets through relaxation from an initial, magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium. Kinetic equilibria are established toward the end of our simulations, thus demonstrating the existence of kinetic force-free current sheets. Although the system currents in the late equilibrium state remain field aligned as in the initial configuration, the velocity distribution functions of both ions and electrons systematically evolve from their initial drifting Maxwellians to their final time-stationary Vlasov state. The existence of 2D force-free current sheets at kinetic equilibrium necessitates future work in discovering additional integrals of motion of the system, constructing the kinetic distribution functions, and eventually investigating their stability properties.

Turbulent magnetic reconnection has been observed by spacecraft to occur commonly in terrestrial magnetosphere and the solar wind, providing a new scenario of kinetic scale magnetic reconnection. Here by imposing a turbulent forcing on ions in particle-in-cell simulations, we simulate kinetic scale turbulent magnetic reconnection. We find formation of fluctuated electric and magnetic fields and filamentary currents in the diffusion region. Reconnection rate does not change much compared to that in laminar Hall reconnection. At the X-line, the electric and magnetic fields both exhibit a double power-law spectrum with a spectral break near local lower-hybrid frequency. The energy conversion rate is high in turbulent reconnection, leading to significant electron acceleration at the X-line. The accelerated electrons form a power-law spectrum in the high energy range, with a power-law index of about 3.7, much harder than one can obtain in laminar reconnection.

Thermalization and heating of plasma flows at shocks result in unstable charged-particle distributions that generate a wide range of electromagnetic waves. These waves, in turn, can further accelerate and scatter energetic particles. Thus, the properties of the waves and their implication for wave−particle interactions are critically important for modeling energetic particle dynamics in shock environments. Whistler-mode waves, excited by the electron heat flux or a temperature anisotropy, arise naturally near shocks and foreshock transients. As a result, they can often interact with suprathermal electrons. The low background magnetic field typical at the core of such transients and the large wave amplitudes may cause such interactions to enter the nonlinear regime. In this study, we present a statistical characterization of whistler-mode waves at foreshock transients around Earth’s bow shock, as they are observed under a wide range of upstream conditions. We find that a significant portion of them are sufficiently intense and coherent (narrowband) to warrant nonlinear treatment. Copious observations of background magnetic field gradients and intense whistler wave amplitudes suggest that phase trapping, a very effective mechanism for electron acceleration in inhomogeneous plasmas, may be the cause. We discuss the implications of our findings for electron acceleration in planetary and astrophysical shock environments.

Magnetic flux ropes with helical field lines and a strong core field are ubiquitous structures in space plasmas. Recently, kinetic-scale flux ropes have been identified by high-resolution observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft in the magnetosheath, which have drawn a lot of attention because of their nonideal behavior and internal structures. Detailed investigation of flux rope structure and dynamics requires the development of realistic kinetic models. In this paper, we generalize an equilibrium model to reconstruct a kinetic-scale flux rope previously reported via MMS observations. The key features in the magnetic field and electron pitch-angle distribution measurements of all four satellites are simultaneously reproduced in this reconstruction. Besides validating the model, our results also indicate that the anisotropic features previously attributed to asymmetric magnetic topologies in the magnetosheath can be alternatively explained by the spacecraft motion in the flux rope rest frame. Solar wind plasma at the Earth's orbit carries transient magnetic field structures including discontinuities. Their interaction with the Earth's bow shock can significantly alter discontinuity configuration and stability. We investigate such an interaction for the most widespread type of solar wind discontinuities—rotational discontinuities (RDs). We use a set of in situ multispacecraft observations and perform kinetic hybrid simulations. We focus on the RD current density amplification that may lead to magnetic reconnection. We show that the amplification can be as high as two orders of magnitude and is mainly governed by three processes: the transverse magnetic field compression, global thinning of RD, and interaction of RD with low-frequency electromagnetic waves in the magnetosheath, downstream of the bow shock. The first factor is found to substantially exceed simple hydrodynamic predictions in most observed cases, the second effect has a rather moderate impact, while the third causes strong oscillations of the current density. We show that the presence of accelerated particles in the bow shock precursor highly boosts the current density amplification, making the postshock magnetic reconnection more probable. The pool of accelerated particles strongly affects the interaction of RDs with the Earth's bow shock, as it is demonstrated by observational data analysis and hybrid code simulations. Thus, shocks should be distinguished not by the inclination angle, but rather by the presence of foreshocks populated with shock reflected particles. Plasma processes in the RD–shock interaction affect magnetic structures and turbulence in the Earth's magnetosphere and may have implications for the processes in astrophysics. The interatomic resonant Auger effect in N2O is investigated experimentally and theoretically. We observe variations of the ratio between the yields of 1s-photoionization of the central and terminal nitrogen atom in the photon energy range across the O 1s → π* excitation. The present ab initio calculations of electronic structure and dynamics attribute these variations to the Fano interference between the direct N 1s-photoionizations and the resonant O 1s → π* excitation followed by Auger decays into the respective core–shell continua. The theory reveals that this interatomic core–hole-transfer effect is governed entirely by an energy transfer mechanism, and not by charge transfer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ion-scale flux ropes and plasmoids are secondary magnetic islands produced during magnetic reconnection in various heliospheric plasma environments. Here we study the structure of secondary islands and the particle dynamics within them using particle-in-cell simulations. Ion-scale flux ropes (secondary islands with a strong core field) are formed in a strong guide field regime, whereas ion-scale plasmoids (secondary islands with a weak core field) are formed in a weak guide field regime. Currents in both types of secondary islands are carried primarily by electrons. Both types of secondary islands have a magnetic tension force pointing radially inward toward their center. In the flux rope type, this inward tension force is balanced by an outward magnetic pressure gradient of the strong core field; in the plasmoid type, it is countered by an outward thermal pressure gradient caused by electron and ion energizations. The transition between these two types occurs when Bg/B0 = 0.1–0.2 (Bg is the guide field, and B0 is the asymptotic magnetic field). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Particle-in-cell simulations show that numerous ion-scale magnetic islands can be formed in a turbulent magnetic reconnection region. These islands can confine and accelerate electrons to high energies effectively, causing the energetic electron energy flux to peak at the center of each island. ARTEMIS spacecraft observations of turbulent reconnection outflows in Earth's magnetotail reveal that peaks in the energetic electron energy flux are well correlated with bipolar signatures of reconnected magnetic field, which are indicative of ion-scale magnetic islands, providing observational evidence for this acceleration process.
