Within a unified formalism the chain of helium isotopes linked by neutron decay reactions is explored from bound states to resonances and cross sections in continuum. Using this realistic example the Continuum Shell Model formalism is presented and discussed.

Many-body quantum chaos results from interparticle interactions in mesoscopic systems at sufficiently high level density. A short review shows that, going beyond generic properties of local spectral statistics, the ideas of many-body quantum chaos serve as a rich source of new theoretical approaches, computational and experimental tools. Chosen examples include the enhancement of weak perturbations, thermalization in finite systems, exponential convergence of large Hamiltonian matrices and correlations between the states of different symmetry.

In this paper we discuss the excitation of a quantum harmonic system, such as a particle bound in a harmonic oscillator potential, by means of dipole and quadrupole electric fields, focusing on effects of their interference. We obtain an exact solution to this problem with methods that date back to the ideas of Wigner. We discuss the rich class of dynamic polarization effects that are involved in such excitation processes and which are relevant to stopping theory, and electromagnetic excitation of atomic and nuclear systems.

We study the dynamics of a complex open quantum many-body system. The coupling to external degrees of freedom can be viewed as a coupling to a radiation field, to continuum states or to a measuring apparatus. This perturbation is treated in terms of an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The influence of such coupling on the properties of the many-body dynamics is discussed, with emphasis on new effects related to dynamical segregation of fast and slow decays and the phase transition to Dicke superradiance. Relations to quantum optics, continuum shell model, theory of measurement, quantum chaos, percolation theory, and to quantum reactions are stressed., 15 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the possibility of measuring the pion dispersion relation in nuclear matter through the anomalous coupling in the reaction \gamma - \gamma' \pi_0. It is shown that this reaction permits the study of pionic modes for space-like momenta. If the pion is softened in nuclear matter due to mixing with the delta-hole state, significant strength for this reaction is expected to move into the space-like region. Competing background processes are evaluated, and it is concluded that useful insight can be obtained experimentally, but only through a difficult exclusive measurement.

Quantum chaos has become an important element of our knowledge about physics of complex systems. In typical mesoscopic systems of interacting particles the dynamics invariably become chaotic when the level density, growing by combinatorial reasons, leads to the increasing probability of mixing simple mean-field (particle–hole) configurations. The resulting stationary states have exceedingly complicated structures that are comparable to those in random matrix theory. We discuss the main properties of mesoscopic quantum chaos and show that it can serve as a justification for application of statistical mechanics to mesoscopic systems. We show that quantum chaos becomes a powerful instrument for experimental, theoretical and computational work. The generalization to open systems and effects in the continuum are discussed with the help of the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian; it is shown how to formulate this approach for numerous problems of quantum signal transmission. The artificially introduced randomness can also be helpful for a deeper understanding of physics. We indicate the problems that require more investigation so as to be understood further.

In this presentation we summarize our progress in the study of α-clustering in the shell model configuration interaction approach. We put forward Cluster-Nucleon Configuration Interaction Model where the study of clustering is facilitated by the SU(3) symmetry of the cluster channels and by Orthogonality Condition Model. Pioneering methods and results concerning α spectroscopic factors in sd-shell nuclei and in 16 O treated in p-sd shell are presented. Comparison with experimental data is in favor of the approach.

The two-neutron unbound systems of 16Be, 13Li, 10He, and 26O have been measured using the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) and 4 Tm Sweeper magnet setup. The correlations of the 3-body decay for the 6Be and 3Li were extracted and demonstrated a strong correlated enhancement between the two neutrons. The measurement of the 10He ground state resonance from a 14Be(-2p2n) reaction provided insight into previous predictions that wavefunction of the entrance channel, projectile, can influence the observed decay energy spectrum for the unbound system. Lastly, the decay-in-target (DiT) technique was utilized to extract the lifetime of the 26O ground state. The measured lifetime of 4.5+1.1−1.5(stat.)±3(sys.) ps provides the first indication of two-neutron radioactivity.

A sound simultaneous description of the structure and reaction features in a many-body nuclear system is at the very heart of understanding the short-lived nucleonic matter in the laboratory and in the universe. In this brief presentation we discuss some aspects and techniques related to reactions involving composite objects that explicitly make a connection between the structure and reaction properties of nuclei. Here we concentrate on a specific pedagogical example that highlights difficulties and clarifies the path towards solutions.
