1. The TRGB-SBF Project. I. A Tip of the Red Giant Branch Distance to the Fornax Cluster with JWST

Abstract

Differences between the local value of the Hubble constant measured via the distance ladder versus the value inferred from the cosmic microwave background with the assumption of the standard ΛCDM model have reached over 5 σ significance. To determine if this discrepancy is due to new physics or more mundane systematic errors, it is essential to remove as many sources of systematic uncertainty as possible, by developing high-precision distance ladders that are independent of the traditional Cepheid and Type Ia supernova route. Here, we present JWST observations of three early-type Fornax Cluster galaxies, the first of 14 observations from a Cycle 2 JWST program. Our modest integration times allow us to measure highly precise tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distances and they will also be used to perform measurements of surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs). From these three galaxies, we determine an average TRGB distance modulus to the Fornax Cluster of μ = 31.424 ± 0.077 mag or D = 19.3 ± 0.7 Mpc. With 11 more scheduled observations in nearby elliptical galaxies, our program will allow us to set the zero-point of the SBF scale to better than 2% for more distant measurements, charting a path toward a high-precision measurement of H _0 that is independent of the traditional Cepheid–supernova Ia distance ladder.

2. Optical Variability of Gaia CRF3 Sources with Robust Statistics and the 5000 Most Variable Quasars

Abstract

Using the light-curve time-series data for more than 11.7 million variable sources published in the Gaia Data Release 3, the average magnitudes, colors, and variability parameters have been computed for 0.836 million Gaia CRF objects, which are mostly quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). To mitigate the effects of occasional flukes in the data, robust statistical measures have been employed: namely, the median, median absolute deviation, and Spearman correlation. We find that the majority of the CRF sources have moderate amplitudes of variability in the Gaia G band just below 0.1 mag. The heavy-tailed distribution of variability amplitudes (quantified as robust standard deviations) does not find a single analytical form, but is closer to Maxwell distribution with a scale of 0.078 mag. The majority of CRF sources have positive correlations between G magnitude and G _BP − G _RP colors, meaning that these quasars and AGNs become bluer when they are brighter. The variations in the G _BP and G _RP bands are also mostly positively correlated. Dependencies of all variability parameters with cosmological redshift are fairly flat for the more accurate estimates above redshift 0.7, while the median color shows strong systematic variations with redshift. Using a robust normalized score of magnitude deviations, a sample of the 5000 most variable quasars is selected and published. The intersection of this sample with the ICRF3 catalog shows a much higher rate of strongly variable quasars (mostly blazars) in ICRF3.

Abstract

Using very long baseline interferometry data for the sources that comprise the third International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF3), we examine the quality of the formal source-position uncertainties of ICRF3 by determining the excess astrometric variability (unexplained variance) for each source as a function of time. We also quantify multiple qualitatively distinct aspects of astrometric variability seen in the data, using a variety of metrics. Average position offsets, statistical dispersion measures, and coherent trends over time as explored by smoothing the data are combined to characterize the most and least positionally stable ICRF3 sources. We find a notable dependence of the excess variance and statistical variability measures on decl., as is expected for unmodeled ionospheric delay errors and the Northern Hemisphere–dominated network geometries of most astrometric and geodetic observing campaigns.

Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

A large number of candidate binary stars with apparent acceleration on the sky has emerged from analysis of astrometric data collected by the Hipparcos, Tycho-2, and Gaia space missions. Although the apparent acceleration can serve as a relatively reliable indicator of binarity, it provides scarce information about the orbital and physical parameters of the components. With an emphasis on the search for stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars hidden in binary systems, we start a broader effort to characterize the most promising candidates using follow-up ground-based observations. Accurate quantification of orbital and physical parameters of systems with dim or invisible companions requires combination of Hipparcos, Gaia, and precision spectroscopic measurements. In this paper, we review the necessary steps in this implementation and describe the improved Hipparcos–Gaia sample of long-term astrometric accelerations, which includes correction of sky-correlated systematic errors using the vector spherical decomposition method. As an example, we study one Hipparcos star with a large acceleration, HIP 44842, where the companion is revealed to be a normal main-sequence star.

Abstract

Considering the growing interest in magnetic materials for unconventional computing, data storage, and sensor applications, there is active research not only on material synthesis but also characterisation of their properties. In addition to structural and integral magnetic characterisations, imaging of magnetisation patterns, current distributions and magnetic fields at nano- and microscale is of major importance to understand the material responses and qualify them for specific applications. In this roadmap, we aim to cover a broad portfolio of techniques to perform nano- and microscale magnetic imaging using superconducting quantum interference devices, spin centre and Hall effect magnetometries, scanning probe microscopies, x-ray- and electron-based methods as well as magnetooptics and nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging. The roadmap is aimed as a single access point of information for experts in the field as well as the young generation of students outlining prospects of the development of magnetic imaging technologies for the upcoming decade with a focus on physics, materials science, and chemistry of planar, three-dimensional and geometrically curved objects of different material classes including two-dimensional materials, complex oxides, semi-metals, multiferroics, skyrmions, antiferromagnets, frustrated magnets, magnetic molecules/nanoparticles, ionic conductors, superconductors, spintronic and spinorbitronic materials.

8. Tip of the Red Giant Branch Distances with JWST: An Absolute Calibration in NGC 4258 and First Applications to Type Ia Supernova Hosts

Abstract

The tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) allows for the measurement of precise and accurate distances to nearby galaxies based on the brightest ascent of low-mass red giant branch stars before they undergo the helium flash. With the advent of JWST, there is great promise to utilize the technique to measure galaxy distances out to at least 50 Mpc, significantly further than the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST's) reach of 20 Mpc. However, with any standard candle, it is first necessary to provide an absolute reference. Here, we use Cycle 1 data to provide an absolute calibration in the F090W filter. F090W is most similar to the F814W filter commonly used for TRGB measurements with HST, which had been adopted by the community due to its minimal dependence on the underlying metallicities and ages of stars. The imaging we use was taken in the outskirts of NGC 4258, which has a direct geometrical distance measurement from the Keplerian motion of its water megamaser. Utilizing several measurement techniques, we find ${M}_{\mathrm{TRGB}}^{{\rm{F}}090{\rm{W}}}$ = −4.362 ± 0.033 (stat) ± 0.045 (sys) mag (Vega) for the metal-poor TRGB. We also perform measurements of the TRGB in two Type Ia supernova hosts, NGC 1559 and NGC 5584. We find good agreement between our TRGB distances and previous determinations of distances to these galaxies from Cepheids (Δ = 0.01 ± 0.06 mag), with these differences being too small to explain the Hubble tension (∼0.17 mag). In addition, we showcase the serendipitous discovery of a faint dwarf galaxy near NGC 5584.

Abstract

Differences between the local value of the Hubble constant measured via the distance ladder versus the value inferred from the cosmic microwave background with the assumption of the standard ΛCDM model have reached over 5 σ significance. To determine if this discrepancy is due to new physics or more mundane systematic errors, it is essential to remove as many sources of systematic uncertainty as possible, by developing high-precision distance ladders that are independent of the traditional Cepheid and Type Ia supernova route. Here, we present JWST observations of three early-type Fornax Cluster galaxies, the first of 14 observations from a Cycle 2 JWST program. Our modest integration times allow us to measure highly precise tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distances and they will also be used to perform measurements of surface brightness fluctuations (SBFs). From these three galaxies, we determine an average TRGB distance modulus to the Fornax Cluster of μ = 31.424 ± 0.077 mag or D = 19.3 ± 0.7 Mpc. With 11 more scheduled observations in nearby elliptical galaxies, our program will allow us to set the zero-point of the SBF scale to better than 2% for more distant measurements, charting a path toward a high-precision measurement of H 0 that is independent of the traditional Cepheid–supernova Ia distance ladder. Abstract

Building upon the success and relevance of the 2014 Magnetism Roadmap, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap edition follows a similar general layout, even if its focus is naturally shifted, and a different group of experts and, thus, viewpoints are being collected and presented. More importantly, key developments have changed the research landscape in very relevant ways, so that a novel view onto some of the most crucial developments is warranted, and thus, this 2017 Magnetism Roadmap article is a timely endeavour. The change in landscape is hereby not exclusively scientific, but also reflects the magnetism related industrial application portfolio. Specifically, Hard Disk Drive technology, which still dominates digital storage and will continue to do so for many years, if not decades, has now limited its footprint in the scientific and research community, whereas significantly growing interest in magnetism and magnetic materials in relation to energy applications is noticeable, and other technological fields are emerging as well. Also, more and more work is occurring in which complex topologies of magnetically ordered states are being explored, hereby aiming at a technological utilization of the very theoretical concepts that were recognised by the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics. Given this somewhat shifted scenario, it seemed appropriate to select topics for this Roadmap article that represent the three core pillars of magnetism, namely magnetic materials, magnetic phenomena and associated characterization techniques, as well as applications of magnetism. While many of the contributions in this Roadmap have clearly overlapping relevance in all three fields, their relative focus is mostly associated to one of the three pillars. Abstract

A new Grad–Zhdanov module is implemented into the SOLPS-ITER code for calculation of the parallel kinetic coefficients. A complete, multi-ion generalization is performed, relaxing the heavy impurity assumption. A JET-like D+T+Ne test simulation is conducted to demonstrate the ability to model a 50/50 deuterium (D) and tritium (T) mixture in SOLPS-ITER. More than 30% T build-up with respect to D is observed in different parts of the simulation domain, in particular at the high field side. A T predominance over D is also observed near both the inner and outer targets. It is a result of the different effective diffusion, dominated by charge-exchange processes, for the D and T neutral species. A simple 1D model is proposed to describe this phenomenon. The contribution to the differing D and T distribution in different regions from the Grad–Zhdanov thermal force is also studied. Due to the thermal force and the D/T poloidal flow from the low field side to the high field side, the prevalence of the T species over D is found at the high field side at the X-point level. The latter leads to an inner–outer divertor asymmetry of $n_T/n_D$ . However, the effect is relatively small due to the close D and T masses. It is further shown that the infinite ion mass difference limit, which is used for the derivation of the Zhdanov-Yushmanov analytical expressions and applied for the thermal force coefficient calculation previously used in the SOLPS-ITER code, overestimates $n_T/n_D$ significantly. Thus, the old SOLPS-ITER model should not be applied for D–T simulations. Finally, possible experimental studies of the D and T spatial separation due to the new effects revealed by this modelling are discussed.

Abstract

The fundamental celestial reference frame (CRF) is based on two catalogs of astrometric positions: the third realization of the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF3), and the much larger Gaia CRF, built from the third data release (DR3). The objects in common between these two catalogs are mostly distant AGNs and quasars that are both sufficiently optically bright for Gaia and radio loud for the VLBI. This limited collection of reference objects is crucially important for the mutual alignment of the two CRFs and the maintenance of all of the other frames and coordinate systems branching from the ICRF. In this paper, we show that the three components of ICRF3 ( S/X, K , and X/Ka band catalogs) have significantly different sky-correlated vector fields of position offsets with respect to Gaia DR3. When iteratively expanded in the vector spherical harmonics up to degree 4 on a carefully vetted set of common sources, each of these components includes several statistically significant terms. The median sky-correlated offsets from the Gaia positions are found to be 56 μ as for the S/X , 100 μ as for the K , and 324 μ as for the X/Ka catalogs. The weighted mean vector field is subtracted from the Gaia reference positions, while the deviations from that field are added to each of the ICRF3 components. The corrected positions from each of the four input catalogs are combined into a single weighted mean catalog, which we propose to be the current most accurate realization of an inertial radio-optical CRF.

17. A Catalog of Candidate Double and Lensed Quasars from Gaia and WISE Data

Abstract

Making use of strong correlations between closely separated multiple or double sources and photometric and astrometric metadata in Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3), we generate a catalog of candidate double- and multiply imaged lensed quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs), comprising 3140 systems. It includes two partially overlapping parts: a sample of distant (redshifts mostly greater than 1) sources with perturbed data; and systems that have been resolved into separate components by Gaia at separations less than 2″. For the first part, which is roughly one-third of the published catalog, we synthesized 0.617 million redshifts using multiple machine-learning prediction and classification methods, using independent photometric and astrometric data from Gaia EDR3 and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, with accurate spectroscopic redshifts from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) as a training set. Using these synthetic redshifts, we estimate a 4.9% rate of interlopers with spectroscopic redshifts below 1 in this part of the catalog. Unresolved candidate double and dual AGNs and quasars are selected as sources with a marginally high BP/RP excess factor ( phot _ bp _ rp _ excess _ factor ), which is sensitive to source extent, limiting our search to high-redshift quasars. For the second part of the catalog, additional filters on measured parallax and near-neighbor statistics are applied to diminish the propagation of the remaining stellar contaminants. The estimated rate of the positives (double or multiple sources) is 98%, and the estimated rate of dual (physically related) quasars is greater than 54%. A few dozen serendipitously found objects of interest are discussed in more detail, including known and new lensed images, planetary nebulae, young IR stars of peculiar morphology, and quasars with catastrophic redshift errors in SDSS.

We analyse the electric field transverse distributions in light beams with a tripled frequency and with a frequency of 2ω1–ω2, which arise in the bulk of an isotropic cubic-nonlinear medium upon the propagation of nonuniformly polarised beams of fundamental radiation with a multimode transverse structure described by a superposition of Laguerre – Gaussian modes. A relation is found between the total topological indices of the circular polarisation singularity points in the transverse sections of the generated signal beams and the corresponding total indices in the beams of fundamental radiation.

Abstract

We consider the possibility of resonant isotope-selective population of states with υ = 3 of the vibrational mode ν 3 of UF6 molecules as a result of three-photon bichromatic excitation of the molecules by IR radiation from two pulsed CF4 lasers and two pulsed para-H2 lasers. We propose specific schemes and analyse the possibility of exciting the 238UF6 and 235UF6 molecules into states with υ = 3 of the vibrational mode ν 3 using two CF4 lasers (or para-H2 lasers) generating in the region of 16 μm at frequencies that are significantly (by ∼3.5 – 17 cm−1) detuned from the linear absorption bands at the frequencies of ν 3 vibration of these molecules in a gas-dynamically cooled molecular flow. However, the sum of the doubled lasing frequency 2ν L1 of the first laser and the frequency ν L2 of the second laser is equal to a frequency of the transition υ = 0 → υ = 3 of the vibrational mode ν 3 of the UF6 molecules. When both laser pulses coincide in time, the possibility of selective excitation of UF6 molecules from the ground vibrational state with υ = 0 to the state with υ = 3 of the vibrational mode ν 3 is realised. The proposed schemes for the excitation of UF6 molecules to states with υ = 3 are compared with the previously implemented schemes for the effective excitation of states with υ = 3 of the vibrational mode ν 3 (F 1) and states with υ = 2 of the vibrational mode ν 3 (A 1) of SF6 molecules by three- and two-frequency radiation of pulsed CO2 lasers, respectively.

Abstract

An AlGaAs laser (907 nm, 0.2 μJ) with a 3-ns pulse duration and eye-safe energy density below 1 μJ cm−2 is developed for lidar application. The laser is composed of three stacked diodes in a plastic housing. An external pump current generator based on discrete elements with an FMMT417 bipolar transistor switch is assembled on a printed circuit board together with the laser. A lidar based on this laser and a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) as a detector is used to monitor aerosols with a resolution of 10 cm inside the tunnel of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory near the Elbrus volcano. An abrupt three-fold increase in aerosol emanation of yet unknown nature is recorded for the first time. The absence of the Earth’s crust disturbance traces in the signal of a laser interferometer with a resolution of 1.6 × 10−11 m testifies to a high sensitivity of the lidar for monitoring geodynamic processes.

We investigate the problem of the most efficient first-order definition of the property of containing an induced subgraph isomorphic to a given pattern graph, which is closely related to the time complexity of the decision problem for this property. We derive a series of new bounds for the minimum quantifier depth of a formula defining this property for pattern graphs on five vertices, as well as for disjoint unions of isomorphic complete multipartite graphs. Moreover, we prove that for any there exists a graph on vertices and a first-order formula of quantifier depth at most that defines the property of containing an induced subgraph isomorphic to this graph. We have revealed a strong (by a factor of 2 to 5) mutual increase in the yield of IR molecular dissociation (by the example of CF2HCl and CF3Br) and a significant (by a factor of 1.5 to 3) lowering of dissociation thresholds in the nonequilibrium thermodynamic conditions of compression shock in the irradiation of the molecules by resonance IR laser radiation in the bimolecular mixture in comparison with their individual irradiation. This opens up the possibility to perform efficient isotope-selective IR dissociation of molecules at lower excitation energy densities (Φ ⩽ 1.5 – 2.0 J cm−2) and thereby to improve the dissociation selectivity. This was demonstrated by the example of chlorine- and bromine-isotope selective dissociation of the specified molecules, which are characterised by quite small (less than 0.25 cm−1) isotope shifts in the IR vibrational absorption spectra excited by laser radiation. The enrichment coefficients K enr(35Cl / 37Cl) = 0.90 ± 0.05 in the residual CF2HCl gas and K enr(79Br / 81Br) in the resultant Br2 product are obtained when the CF2HCl : CF3Br = 1 : 1 molecular mixture and CF3Br molecules, respectively, are irradiated by the 9R(30) CO2 laser line (frequency, 1084.635 cm−1) at an energy density Φ ≈ 1.3 J cm−2.

Abstract

We report the results of an experimental investigation of ablation of stone polycrystalline targets of complex multicomponent composition, which imitate the substance of asteroids. The targets were irradiated by nanosecond pulses of a neodymium laser at an energy density Φ L of up to 5 × 104 J cm−2. The experiments demonstrated the existence of two ablation regimes, with the boundary between them lying at Φ L ≈ 4000 J cm−2. The regime change is characterised by a change in the form of the dependence of the surface mass density of removed target material on the laser energy density and by the appearance of a minimum in the dependence of specific energy of destruction on Φ L. This is supposedly related to the passage from a one-dimensional plasma plume expansion to the three-dimensional one and the corresponding decrease in the efficiency of energy transfer from the laser beam to the target due to a lowering of laser-produced plasma density. Our experiments also showed the existence of a maximum in impulse coupling coefficient C m as a function of laser energy density (C m ≈ 6.3 × 10−5 N W−1 for Φ L = Φ opt ≈ 25 J cm−2). Maxima were also recorded in the dependences of the ablation efficiency and average ablation flow velocity on Φ L. For Φ L > Φ opt, the decrease in the function C m(Φ L) turns out to be much steeper than for metals and polymer materials. The difference is supposedly due to the lower strength and lower plasticity of the polycrystalline stone targets.

Some collective excitations of an ensemble of closely spaced (two-level) atoms can be characterised by extremely low rates of radiation decay, which is of considerable interest for storing quantum information. Such (dark) states are realised, for example, in planar geometry when atoms are located at the nodes of a regular polygon. However, the decay rate of such excitations increases markedly when the geometry deviates from ideal. Using the example of small deformation of a square in a rhombus, we show that an increase in the decay rate of the dark state due to symmetry breaking can be compensated for by adjusting the transition frequency of some atoms exposed to external laser radiation.

Abstract

The main goal was to test a set of silvicultural measures that would ensure the natural regeneration of larch in areas of mature and overmature plantations with a different proportion of larch in the composition. The objects were laid in the 121st quarter of the Yemtsovsky educational and experimental forestry of the Northern Arctic Federal University (NArFU) in the Arkhangelsk region, in overmature plantations of the green moss group of forest types, the share of larch in which is from 2 to 5 units in the composition. The predominant forest types were pine forests, blueberry larch forests. The average age of larch is more than 160 years; the undergrowth of this species under the canopy was completely absent. Spruce predominates in the undergrowth, its quantity varies from 2.0 to 4.0 thousand pieces/ha. Renewal of mature and overmature plantations was successful due to spruce and pine undergrowth, but there was a settlement on all strips and deciduous species. On all lanes, the birch already has a height of 2-2.5 meters and is a strong competitor in the growth of spruce and pine, which can completely nullify the further productive development and growth of coniferous undergrowth, and especially larch. It is required to carry out care in young stands in order to form the desired target composition of conifers and the optimal density of the future young plantation. The results can be taken into account when developing a strategy for forest management and forest management, making management decisions, planning and designing activities. The obtained results of the research are the scientific basis for improving the structure of the forests of the European North, increasing their productivity, biospheric role and profitability of the forest sector of the economy.

Abstract

Models of quantum systems on curved space-times lack sufficient experimental verification. Some speculative theories suggest that quantum correlations, such as entanglement, may exhibit different behavior to purely classical correlations in curved space. By measuring this effect or lack thereof, we can test the hypotheses behind several such models. For instance, as predicted by Ralph et al [ 5 ] and Ralph and Pienaar [ 1 ], a bipartite entangled system could decohere if each particle traversed through a different gravitational field gradient. We propose to study this effect in a ground to space uplink scenario. We extend the above theoretical predictions of Ralph and coworkers and discuss the scientific consequences of detecting/failing to detect the predicted gravitational decoherence. We present a detailed mission design of the European Space Agency’s Space QUEST (Space—Quantum Entanglement Space Test) mission, and study the feasibility of the mission scheme.

Our model yields the emergence of both scale-free topologies and meso-scale structures in the layers, for an appropriate choice of the control parameters. We further report that the growth of the number of interacting layers leads to a decrease of the global order, due to inter-layer structural competition. However, the increase of the system’s scale can effect local synchronization between neighboring (or strongly coupled) nodes. Such unforeseen phenomena is connected with the nature of the competitive mechanism, which implies the rivalry for optimal structure within the whole system, a situation occurring in a variety of natural systems.

Abstract

Quantum cryptography is information-theoretically secure owing to its solid basis in quantum mechanics. However, generally, initial implementations with practical imperfections might open loopholes, allowing an eavesdropper to compromise the security of a quantum cryptographic system. This has been shown to happen for quantum key distribution (QKD). Here we apply experience from implementation security of QKD to several other quantum cryptographic primitives. We survey quantum digital signatures, quantum secret sharing, source-independent quantum random number generation, quantum secure direct communication, and blind quantum computing. We propose how the eavesdropper could in principle exploit the loopholes to violate assumptions in these protocols, breaking their security properties. Applicable countermeasures are also discussed. It is important to consider potential implementation security issues early in protocol design, to shorten the path to future applications.
