Young, low-mass brown dwarfs orbiting early-type stars, with low mass ratios ( q ≲ 0.01), appear to be intrinsically rare and present a formation dilemma: could a handful of these objects be the highest-mass outcomes of “planetary” formation channels (bottom up within a protoplanetary disk), or are they more representative of the lowest-mass “failed binaries” (formed via disk fragmentation or core fragmentation)? Additionally, their orbits can yield model-independent dynamical masses, and when paired with wide wavelength coverage and accurate system age estimates, can constrain evolutionary models in a regime where the models have a wide dispersion depending on the initial conditions. We present new interferometric observations of the 16 Myr substellar companion HD 136164 Ab (HIP 75056 Ab) made with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI)/GRAVITY and an updated orbit fit including proper motion measurements from the Hipparcos–Gaia Catalog of Accelerations. We estimate a dynamical mass of 35 ± 10 M _J ( q ∼ 0.02), making HD 136164 Ab the youngest substellar companion with a dynamical mass estimate. The new mass and newly constrained orbital eccentricity ( e = 0.44 ± 0.03) and separation (22.5 ± 1 au) could indicate that the companion formed via the low-mass tail of the initial mass function. Our atmospheric fit to a SPHINX M-dwarf model grid suggests a subsolar C/O ratio of 0.45 and 3 × solar metallicity, which could indicate formation in a circumstellar disk via disk fragmentation. Either way, the revised mass estimate likely excludes bottom-up formation via core accretion in a circumstellar disk. HD 136164 Ab joins a select group of young substellar objects with dynamical mass estimates; epoch astrometry from future Gaia data releases will constrain the dynamical mass of this crucial object further.

We investigate the properties of strong (H β + [O iii ]) emitters before and after the end of the “Epoch of Reionization” from z = 8 to z = 5.5. We make use of ultradeep JWST / NIRCam imaging in the parallel field (P2) of the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field (H-XDF), in order to select prominent (H β + [O iii ]) emitters (with rest-frame equivalent width (EW _0 ) ≳ 100 Å) at z = 5.5–7, based on their flux density enhancement in the F356W band with respect to the spectral energy distribution continuum. We complement our selection with other (H β + [O iii ]) emitters from the literature at similar and higher ( z = 7−8) redshifts. We find (nonindependent) anticorrelations between EW _0 (H β + [O iii ]) and both galaxy stellar mass and age, in agreement with previous studies, and a positive correlation with specific star formation rate (sSFR). On the SFR– M ^⋆ plane, the (H β + [O iii ]) emitters populate both the star formation main sequence and the starburst region, which become indistinguishable at low stellar masses ( ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({M}^{\star })\lt 7.5$ ). We find tentative evidence for a nonmonotonic relation between EW _0 (H β + [O iii ]) and SFR, such that both parameters correlate with each other at SFR ≳ 1 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , while the correlation flattens out at lower SFRs. This suggests that low metallicities producing high EW _0 (H β + [O iii ]) could be important at low SFR values. Interestingly, the properties of the strong emitters and other galaxies (33% and 67% of our z = 5.5–7 sample, respectively) are similar, including, in many cases, high sSFR. Therefore, it is crucial to consider both emitters and nonemitters to obtain a complete picture of the cosmic star formation activity around the Epoch of Reionization.

We make use of JWST medium-band and broadband NIRCam imaging, along with ultradeep MIRI 5.6 μ m imaging, in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field to identify prominent line emitters at z ≃ 7–8. Out of a total of 58 galaxies at z ≃ 7–8, we find 18 robust candidates (≃31%) for (H β + [O iii ]) emitters, based on their enhanced fluxes in the F430M and F444W filters, with EW _0 (H β +[O iii ]) ≃87–2100 Å. Among these emitters, 16 lie in the MIRI coverage area and 12 exhibit a clear flux excess at 5.6 μ m, indicating the simultaneous presence of a prominent H α emission line with EW _0 (H α ) ≃200–3000 Å. This is the first time that H α emission can be detected in individual galaxies at z > 7. The H α line, when present, allows us to separate the contributions of H β and [O iii ] to the (H β +[O iii ]) complex and derive H α -based star formation rates (SFRs). We find that in most cases [O iii ]/H β > 1. Instead, two galaxies have [O iii ]/H β < 1, indicating that the NIRCam flux excess is mainly driven by H β . Most prominent line emitters are very young starbursts or galaxies on their way to/from the starburst cloud. They make for a cosmic SFR density ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({\rho }_{{\mathrm{SFR}}_{{\rm{H}}\alpha }}/({M}_{\odot }\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}\,{\mathrm{Mpc}}^{-3}))\simeq -2.35$ , which is about a quarter of the total value ( ${\mathrm{log}}_{10}({\rho }_{{\mathrm{SFR}}_{\mathrm{tot}}}/({M}_{\odot }\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}\,{\mathrm{Mpc}}^{-3}))\simeq -1.76$ ) at z ≃ 7–8. Therefore, the strong H α emitters likely had a significant role in reionization.

Tension remains between the observed and modeled properties of substellar objects, but objects in binary orbits, with known dynamical masses, can provide a way forward. HD 72946 B is a recently imaged brown dwarf companion to a nearby, solar-type star. We achieve ∼100 μ as relative astrometry of HD 72946 B in the K band using VLTI/GRAVITY, unprecedented for a benchmark brown dwarf. We fit an ensemble of measurements of the orbit using orbitize! and derive a strong dynamical mass constraint M _B = 69.5 ± 0.5 M _Jup assuming a strong prior on the host star mass M _A = 0.97 ± 0.01 M _⊙ from an updated stellar analysis. We fit the spectrum of the companion to a grid of self-consistent BT-Settl-CIFIST model atmospheres, and perform atmospheric retrievals using petitRADTRANS . A dynamical mass prior only marginally influences the sampled distribution of effective temperature, but has a large influence on the surface gravity and radius, as expected. The dynamical mass alone does not strongly influence retrieved pressure–temperature or cloud parameters within our current retrieval setup. Independently of the cloud prescription and prior assumptions, we find agreement within ±2 σ between the C/O of the host (0.52 ± 0.05) and brown dwarf (0.43–0.63), as expected from a molecular cloud collapse formation scenario, but our retrieved metallicities are implausibly high (0.6–0.8) in light of the excellent agreement of the data with the solar-abundance model grid. Future work on our retrieval framework will seek to resolve this tension. Additional study of low surface gravity objects is necessary to assess the influence of a dynamical mass prior on atmospheric analysis.

Giant exoplanets have been directly imaged over orders of magnitude of orbital separations, prompting theoretical and observational investigations of their formation pathways. In this paper, we present new VLTI/GRAVITY astrometric data of HIP 65426 b, a cold, giant exoplanet which is a particular challenge for most formation theories at a projected separation of 92 au from its primary. Leveraging GRAVITY’s astrometric precision, we present an updated eccentricity posterior that disfavors large eccentricities. The eccentricity posterior is still prior dependent, and we extensively interpret and discuss the limits of the posterior constraints presented here. We also perform updated spectral comparisons with self-consistent forward-modeled spectra, finding a best-fit ExoREM model with solar metallicity and C/O = 0.6. An important caveat is that it is difficult to estimate robust errors on these values, which are subject to interpolation errors as well as potentially missing model physics. Taken together, the orbital and atmospheric constraints paint a preliminary picture of formation inconsistent with scattering after disk dispersal. The X-ray binary system Cygnus X-3 (4U 2030+40, V1521 Cyg) is luminous but enigmatic owing to the high intervening absorption. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy uniquely probes the dynamics of the photoionized gas in the system. In this Letter, we report on an observation of Cyg X-3 with the XRISM/Resolve spectrometer, which provides unprecedented spectral resolution and sensitivity in the 2–10 keV band. We detect multiple kinematic and ionization components in absorption and emission whose superposition leads to complex line profiles, including strong P Cygni profiles on resonance lines. The prominent Fe xxv He α and Fe xxvi Ly α emission complexes are clearly resolved into their characteristic fine-structure transitions. Self-consistent photoionization modeling allows us to disentangle the absorption and emission components and measure the Doppler velocity of these components as a function of binary orbital phase. We find a significantly higher velocity amplitude for the emission lines than for the absorption lines. The absorption lines generally appear blueshifted by ∼−500–600 km s ^−1 . We show that the wind decomposes naturally into a relatively smooth and large-scale component, perhaps associated with the background wind itself, plus a turbulent, denser structure located close to the compact object in its orbit.

We resolve the multiple images of the binary-lens microlensing event ASASSN-22av using the GRAVITY instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The light curves show weak binary-lens perturbations, complicating the analysis, but the joint modeling with the VLTI data breaks several degeneracies, arriving at a strongly favored solution. Thanks to precise measurements of the angular Einstein radius θ _E = 0.724 ± 0.002 mas and microlens parallax, we determine that the lens system consists of two M dwarfs with masses of M _1 = 0.258 ± 0.008 M _⊙ and M _2 = 0.130 ± 0.007 M _⊙ , a projected separation of r _⊥ = 6.83 ± 0.31 au, and a distance of D _L = 2.29 ± 0.08 kpc. The successful VLTI observations of ASASSN-22av open up a new path for studying intermediate-separation (i.e., a few astronomical units) stellar-mass binaries, including those containing dark compact objects such as neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes.

By using an ultradeep JWST/MIRI image at 5.6 μ m in the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field, we constrain the role of strong H α emitters (HAEs) during "cosmic reionization" at z ≃ 7–8. Our sample of HAEs is comprised of young (<35 Myr) galaxies, except for one single galaxy (≈300 Myr), with low stellar masses (≲109 M ⊙). These HAEs show a wide range of rest-frame UV continuum slopes (β), with a median value of β = −2.15 ± 0.21, which broadly correlates with stellar mass. We estimate the ionizing photon production efficiency (ξ ion,0) of these sources (assuming f esc,LyC = 0%), which yields a median value log 10 (ξ ion , 0 / (Hz erg − 1)) = 25.50 − 0.12 + 0.10 . We show that ξ ion,0 positively correlates with H α equivalent width and specific star formation rate. Instead ξ ion,0 weakly anticorrelates with stellar mass and β. Based on the β values, we predict f esc , LyC = 4 % − 2 + 3 , which results in log 10 (ξ ion / (Hz erg − 1)) = 25.55 − 0.13 + 0.11 . Considering this and related findings from the literature, we find a mild evolution of ξ ion with redshift. Additionally, our results suggest that these HAEs require only modest escape fractions (f esc,rel) of 6%–15% to reionize their surrounding intergalactic medium. By only considering the contribution of these HAEs, we estimated their total ionizing emissivity ( N ̇ ion ) as N ̇ ion = 10 50.53 ± 0.45 s − 1 Mpc − 3 . When comparing their N ̇ ion with non-HAE galaxies across the same redshift range, we find that that strong, young, and low-mass emitters may have played an important role during cosmic reionization. A detailed analysis of the nuclear star cluster not only concedes the existence of the S cluster, with its fast-moving stars and the supermassive black hole Sgr A*. It also reveals an embedded region of gas and dust with an exceptionally high stellar density called IRS 13. The IRS 13 cluster can be divided into the northern and eastern counterparts, called IRS 13N and IRS 13E, respectively. This work will focus on both regions and study their most prominent members using rich infrared and radio/submillimeter data baselines. Applying a multiwavelength analysis enables us to determine a comprehensive photometric footprint of the investigated cluster sample. Using the ray-tracing-based radiative transfer model HYPERION, the spectral energy distribution of the IRS 13 members suggests a stellar nature of the dusty sources. These putative young stellar objects (YSOs) have a comparable spectroscopic identification to the D and G sources in or near the S cluster. Furthermore, we report the existence of a population of dusty sources in IRS 13 that can be mostly identified in the H, K, and L band. We propose that, together with the objects reported in the literature, this population is the outcome of a recent star formation process. Furthermore, we report that these presumably young objects are arranged in a disk structure. Although it cannot be excluded that the intrinsic arrangement of IRS 13 does show a disk structure, we find indications that the investigated cluster sample might be related to the counterclockwise disk. The combined study of the flaring of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at radio wavelengths and parsec-scale jet kinematics with Very Long Baseline Interferometry has led to the view that (i) the observed flares are associated with ejections of synchrotron blobs from the core, and (ii) most of the flaring follows a one-to-one correlation with the ejection of the component. Recent results have added to the mounting evidence showing that the quasi-regular component injections into the relativistic jet may not be the only cause of the flux variability. We propose that AGN flux variability and changes in jet morphology can both be of deterministic nature, i.e., having a geometric/kinetic origin linked to the time-variable Doppler beaming of the jet emission as its direction changes due to precession (and nutation). The physics of the underlying jet leads to shocks, instabilities, or ejections of plasmoids. The appearance (morphology, flux, etc.) of the jet can, however, be strongly affected and modulated by precession. We demonstrate this modulating power of precession for OJ 287. For the first time, we show that the spectral state of the spectral energy distribution (SED) can be directly related to the jet's precession phase. We model the SED evolution and reproduce the precession parameters. Further, we apply our precession model to 11 prominent AGNs. We show that for OJ 287 precession seems to dominate the long-term variability (≳1 yr) of the AGN flux, SED spectral state, and jet morphology, while stochastic processes affect the variability on short timescales (≲0.2 yr). The ongoing monitoring of the Galactic center and Sgr A*, the central supermassive black hole, produces surprising and unexpected findings. This goes hand in hand with the technical evolution of ground- and space-based telescopes and instruments, but also with the progression of image filter techniques such as the Lucyâ€"Richardson algorithm. As we continue to trace the members of the S cluster close to Sgr A* on their expected trajectory around the supermassive black hole, we present the finding of a new stellar source, which we call S4716. The newly found star orbits Sgr A* in about 4.0 yr and can be detected with NIRC2 (Keck), OSIRIS (Keck), SINFONI (VLT), NACO (VLT), and GRAVITY (VLTI). With a periapse distance of about 100 au, S4716 shows an equivalent distance toward Sgr A* as S4711. These fast-moving stars undergo a similar dynamical evolution, since S4711â€"S4716 share comparable orbital properties. We will furthermore draw a connection between the recent finding of a new faint star called S300 and the data presented here. We report a timing analysis of near-infrared (NIR), X-ray, and submillimeter data during a 3 day coordinated campaign observing Sagittarius A*. Data were collected at 4.5 ÎĽ m with the Spitzer Space Telescope, 2â€"8 keV with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, 3â€"70 keV with NuSTAR, 340 GHz with ALMA, and 2.2 ÎĽ m with the GRAVITY instrument on the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Two dates show moderate variability with no significant lags between the submillimeter and the infrared at 99% confidence. A moderately bright NIR flare (F K ∼ 15 mJy) was captured on July 18 simultaneous with an X-ray flare (F 2âˆ'10 keV ∼ 0.1 counts sâˆ'1) that most likely preceded bright submillimeter flux (F 340 GHz ∼ 5.5 Jy) by about + 34 âˆ' 33 + 14 minutes at 99% confidence. The uncertainty in this lag is dominated by the fact that we did not observe the peak of the submillimeter emission. A synchrotron source cooled through adiabatic expansion can describe a rise in the submillimeter once the synchrotron self-Compton NIR and X-ray peaks have faded. This model predicts high GHz and THz fluxes at the time of the NIR/X-ray peak and electron densities well above those implied from average accretion rates for Sgr A*. However, the higher electron density postulated in this scenario would be in agreement with the idea that 2019 was an extraordinary epoch with a heightened accretion rate. Since the NIR and X-ray peaks can also be fit by a nonthermal synchrotron source with lower electron densities, we cannot rule out an unrelated chance coincidence of this bright submillimeter flare with the NIR/X-ray emission. Given the increased attention toward the detection of faint stars in the Galactic center, we would like to address the detectability of S62 in its apoapsis with the Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near Infrared at the Very Large Telescope (SINFONI; VLT) and the Near-Infrared Camera 2 (NIRC2; KECK) in this work. Because of the nearby stars and the chance of confusion, we are using Lucy–Richardson deconvolved images to detect S62 on its Keplerian orbit around Sgr A* with a period of less than 10 yr. We use the same data set as for S62 to trace additionally the S-cluster star S29 at the expected position based on the orbital elements presented in this work. To verify the results of the filtering technique, we are analyzing K-band continuum data of the same epoch independently observed with NIRC2/KECK. Based on the well-derived orbit of S62, we find the star in projection at the expected position in 2019.4 and 2019.5. By analyzing the SINFONI data of 2019.5, we confirm the 16.1 ± 0.2 mag for S62 that was formerly derived with NAOS-CONICA (NACO; VLT). We base our NACO imaging analysis on the robust data set that was previously used to investigate the Schwarzschild precision of S2. We also present a critical discussion of the elsewhere proposed linear trajectory of S62 and its disputed identification with a 19 mag star found with GRAVITY mounted at the VLT Interferometer. Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) is the variable radio, near-infrared (NIR), and X-ray source associated with accretion onto the Galactic center black hole. We have analyzed a comprehensive submillimeter (including new observations simultaneous with NIR monitoring), NIR, and 2–8 keV data set. Submillimeter variations tend to lag those in the NIR by ∼30 minutes. An approximate Bayesian computation fit to the X-ray first-order structure function shows significantly less power at short timescales in the X-rays than in the NIR. Less X-ray variability at short timescales, combined with the observed NIR–X-ray correlations, means the variability can be described as the result of two strictly correlated stochastic processes, the X-ray process being the low-pass-filtered version of the NIR process. The NIR–X-ray linkage suggests a simple radiative model: a compact, self-absorbed synchrotron sphere with high-frequency cutoff close to NIR frequencies plus a synchrotron self-Compton scattering component at higher frequencies. This model, with parameters fit to the submillimeter, NIR, and X-ray structure functions, reproduces the observed flux densities at all wavelengths, the statistical properties of all light curves, and the time lags between bands. The fit also gives reasonable values for physical parameters such as magnetic flux density B ≈ 13 G, source size L ≈ 2.2RS, and high-energy electron density ne ≈ 4 × 107 cm−3. We report measurements of electron-impact excitation cross sections for the strong K-shell n = 2 → 1 transitions in S xv, using the LLNL EBIT-I electron beam ion trap, two crystal spectrometers, and the EBIT Calorimeter Spectrometer. The cross sections are determined by direct normalization to the well-known cross sections of radiative electron capture, measured simultaneously. Using contemporaneous polarization measurements with the two crystal spectrometers, whose dispersion planes are oriented parallel and perpendicular to the electron beam direction, the polarization of the direct excitation line emission is determined, and in turn the isotropic total cross sections are extracted. We further experimentally investigate various line-formation mechanisms, finding that radiative cascades and collisional inner-shell ionization dominate the degree of linear polarization and total line-emission cross sections of the forbidden line, z. Several publications highlight the importance of the observations of bow shocks to learn more about the surrounding interstellar medium and radiation field. We revisit the most prominent dusty and gaseous bow shock source, X7, close to the supermassive black hole, Sgr A*, using multiwavelength analysis. For the purpose of this study, we use Spectrograph for Integral Field Observations in the Near Infrared (SINFONI) (H+K-band) and NACO L′- and M′-band) data sets between 2002 and 2018 with additional COMIC/ADONIS+RASOIR (L′-band)7 data of 1999. By analyzing the line maps of SINFONI, we identify a velocity of ∼200 km s−1 from the tip to the tail. Furthermore, a combination of the multiwavelength data of NACO and SINFONI in the H-, K-, L′-, and M′-bands results in a two-component blackbody fit that implies that X7 is a dust-enshrouded stellar object. The observed ongoing elongation and orientation of X7 in the Brγ line maps and the NACO L′-band continuum indicate a wind arising at the position of Sgr A* or at the IRS16 complex. Observations after 2010 show that the dust and the gas shell seems to be decoupled in the projection from its stellar source S50. The data also implies that the tail of X7 thermally heats up due to the presence of S50. The gas emission at the tip is excited because of the related forward scattering (Mie scattering), which will continue to influence the shape of X7 in the near future. In addition, we find excited [Fe iii ] lines, which together with the recently analyzed dusty sources and the Brγ-bar underline the uniqueness of this source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations in the near-infrared domain showed the presence of the flat core of bright late-type stars inside ∼0.5 pc from the Galactic center supermassive black hole (Sgr A*), while young massive OB/Wolf–Rayet stars form a cusp. Several dynamical processes were proposed to explain this apparent paradox of the distribution of the Galactic center stellar populations. Given the mounting evidence on the significantly increased activity of Sgr A* during the past million years, we propose a scenario based on the interaction between the late-type giants and a nuclear jet, whose past existence and energetics can be inferred from the presence of γ-ray Fermi bubbles and bipolar radio bubbles. Extended, loose envelopes of red giant stars can be ablated by the jet with kinetic luminosity in the range of Lj ≈ 1041– within the inner ∼0.04 pc of Sgr A* (S-cluster region), which would lead to their infrared luminosity decrease after several thousand jet–star interactions. The ablation of the atmospheres of red giants is complemented by the process of tidal stripping that operates at distances of ≲1 mpc, and by the direct mechanical interaction of stars with a clumpy disk at ≳0.04 pc, which can explain the flat density profile of bright late-type stars inside the inner half parsec from Sgr A*. We present high-pass filtered NACO and SINFONI images of the newly discovered stars S4711–S4715 between 2004 and 2016. Our deep H+K-band (SINFONI) and K-band (NACO) data show the S-cluster star S4711 on a highly eccentric trajectory around Sgr A* with an orbital period of 7.6 yr and a periapse distance of 144 au to the supermassive black hole (SMBH). S4711 is hereby the star with the shortest orbital period and the smallest mean distance to the SMBH during its orbit to date. The used high-pass filtered images are based on coadded data sets to improve the signal to noise. The spectroscopic SINFONI data let us determine detailed stellar properties of S4711 like the mass and the rotational velocity. The faint S-cluster star candidates, S4712–S4715, can be observed in a projected distance to Sgr A* of at least temporarily ≤120 mas. From these stars, S4714 is the most prominent, with an orbital period of 12 yr and an eccentricity of 0.985. The stars S4712–S4715 show similar properties, with magnitudes and stellar masses comparable to those of S4711. The MCMC simulations determine confidently precise uncertainties for the orbital elements of S62 and S4711–S4715. The presence of S4711 in addition to S55, S62, and the also newly found star S4714 implies a population of faint stars that can be found at distances to Sgr A* that are comparable to the size of our solar system. These short orbital time period stars in the dense cluster around the SMBH in the center of our Galaxy are perfect candidates to observe gravitational effects such as the periapse shift. The flaring activity of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) can be analyzed by statistical means to test emission models for its accretion flow. A particular modeling question is whether the observed X-ray flares are the high-energy end of a synchrotron spectrum or if they arise from self-Comptonized photons of a lower-energy synchrotron process. We use already published Chandra X-ray Visionary Project data to statistically investigate the X-ray count-rate distribution of Sgr A*. Two previous workgroups have already undertaken such an analysis on that data. They modeled the flaring part of the emission with a bounded power law, i.e., a power-law distribution with a hard cutoff at the highest measured count rate. With this model, both teams obtain a power-law index. We show that the flare count-rate distribution can also be well described by a truncated, i.e., an exponentially decaying power law. We argue that an exponential truncation is a more natural model than a hard cutoff. With this alternate model, our fit yields a power-law index. We find that this slope can be canonically explained by a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process. We analyze the gas and dust emission in the immediate vicinity of the supermassive black hole Sgr A* at the Galactic center (GC) with the ESO Very Large Telescope (Paranal/Chile) instruments SINFONI and VISIR. The SINFONI H+K data cubes show several emission lines with related line map counterparts. From these lines, the Brγ emission is the most prominent one and appears to be shaped as a bar extending along the north–south direction. With VISIR, we find a dusty counterpart to this filamentary emission. In this work, we present evidence that this feature could most be likely connected to the minispiral and potentially influenced by the winds of the massive stars in the central cluster or an accretion wind from Sgr A*. To this end, we coadd the SINFONI data between 2005 and 2015. The spectroscopic analysis reveals a range of Doppler-shifted emission lines. We also detect substructures in the shape of clumps that can be investigated in the channel maps of the Brγ bar. In addition, we compare the detection of the near-infrared Brγ feature to PAH1 mid-infrared observations and published 226 GHz radio data. These clumps show a proper motion of about 320 km s−1 that are consistent with other infrared continuum–detected filaments in the GC. Deriving a mass of for the investigated Brγ feature shows an agreement with former derived masses for similar objects. Besides the north–south Brγ bar, we find a comparable additional east–west feature. Also, we identify several gas reservoirs that are located west of Sgr A* that may harbor dusty objects. Recently, near-infrared GRAVITY@ESO observations at 2.2 μm announced the detection of three bright "flares" in the vicinity of the Galactic center supermassive black hole (SMBH) that exhibited orbital motion at a distance of about 6–11 gravitational radii from an ∼4 × 106M⊙ black hole. There are indications of the presence of a large-scale, organized component of the magnetic field at the Galactic center. Electromagnetic effects on the flare dynamics were previously not taken into account despite the relativistic motion of a plasma in magnetic field leading to the charge separation and nonnegligible net charge density in the plasma. Applying various approaches, we find the net charge number density of the flare components of the order of 10−3–10−4 cm−3, while the particles' total number density is of the order of 106–108 cm−3. However, even such a tiny excess of charged particles in the quasi-neutral plasma can significantly affect the dynamics of flare components, which can then lead to the degeneracy in the measurements of spin of the SMBH. Analyzing the dynamics of recent flares in the case of the rapidly rotating black hole, we also constrain the inclination angle between the magnetic field and spin axis to α < 50°, as for larger angles, the motion of the hot spot is strongly chaotic. We present a detailed analysis of the kinematics of 112 stars that mostly comprise the high-velocity S cluster and orbit the supermassive black hole Sgr A* at the center of the Milky Way. For 39 of them, orbital elements are known; for the remainder, we know proper motions. The distribution of the inclinations and the proper motion flight directions deviate significantly from a uniform distribution, which one expects if the orientation of the orbits are random. Across the central arcseconds, the S-cluster stars are arranged in two almost edge-on disks that are located at a position angle approximately ±45° with respect to the Galactic plane. The angular momentum vectors for stars in each disk point in both directions, i.e., the stars in a given disk rotate in opposite ways. The poles of this structure are located only about 25° from the line of sight. This structure may be the result of a resonance process that started with the formation of the young B-dwarf stars in the cluster about 6 Myr ago. Alternatively, it indicated the presence of a disturber at a distance from the center comparable to the distance of the compact stellar association IRS 13. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
