The study investigates the use of artificial aggregates (AAs), specifically manufactured from ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and ordinary Portland cement (OPC), to mitigate environmental harm caused by illegal quarrying due to the scarcity of natural aggregates (NAs). A cold-bonded pelletization technique was employed to produce five types of AAs with varying proportions of GGBFS & OPC as 82.5:17.5, 85:15, 87.5:12.5, 90:10, 95:5. The AAs with maximum OPC content exhibited a density of 1298 kg m ^−3 , water absorption of 4.8%, and crushing and impact values of 28.6% and 26.3%, respectively. The impact of these AAs on concrete properties was assessed, revealing that AAs facilitated the production of workable concrete with low-density ranges between 1700–2337 kg m ^−3 . Despite a decrease in concrete strength with higher AAs content, structural requirements were met, demonstrating AAs’ potential to effectively substitute natural coarse aggregates (NCAs). The concrete microstructure confirmed the formation of a strong interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and strength-developing cement-hydrated products. This research underscores the scientific contribution of AAs to address aggregate scarcity sustainably and recommends its application in structural elements by experimental validation.

Electronic packages are employed in diverse industries, including automotive, aerospace, and defense. However, their susceptibility to failure arises from exposure to uncontrolled operating conditions, particularly vibrations.Therefore, an investigation has been conducted to explore the effect of vibration in fatigue life of SAC305 lead free solder material employed in Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assembly with ball grid array (BGA) 144 electronic package. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of a printed circuit board with BGA 144 electronic package was conducted to find their dynamic characterisics like natural frequencies and their mode shapes. Experiments were conducted to validate the numerically developed model, where first, second and third modes shapes from FEA and experimental results were compared. In addition, random vibration analysis was performed using numerical simulation where individual solder balls were analysed for stress distribution and experimentswere conducted on specially fabricated PCBs using electro dynamic shaker for validation. Analysis shows that the failure was prominent at the solder balls located at the corner of the package. Further, Minor’s rule was used to estimate the fatigue life of the Pb free solder material in BGA 144 package.

This research investigated the corrosion behavior of standard current metal inert gas weld repair for 6082-T6 aluminum alloy using ER5356 filler metal. The new and repaired (NW and RW) welds were studied. The welds comprised the weld metal (WM), the heat affected zone (HAZ) (solid solution and softened zones), and the base metal (BM). The study focused on investigating electrochemical corrosion using polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods in 3.5% NaCl solutions, especially in HAZ, including metallurgical and mechanical examinations. The BM containing an α -Al matrix with Al(Fe,Mn)Si and Mg _2 Si phases exhibited the maximum hardness (70–104 HV _0.1 ). The WM hardness decreased (67–76 HV _0.1 ) with the α -Al, β -Mg _3 Al _2 , and Mg _2 Si phases. Despite having comparable phases to BM, HAZs showed lower hardness (Solid HAZ: 70–82 HV _0.1 ) due to more intermetallic phases. The RW’s softened HAZ revealed the minimum hardness (52–63 HV _0.1 ) compared to that of the NW (55–70 HV _0.1 ). Besides, the tensile strength of the RW (179.7 MPa) was also lower than that of the NW (174.4 MPa) because of the reheating effect. The electrochemical corrosion results indicated that the BM exhibited the maximum corrosion resistance (the lowest corrosion current density (i _corr ), the highest corrosion potential (E _corr ), and the charge transfer resistance (R _ct )), followed by the HAZ and the WM, respectively. The softened HAZ demonstrated better corrosion resistance than the solid solution HAZ. Conversely, the over-aging effect reduced the softened zone’s pitting corrosion resistance (E _p ) compared to the solid solution zone. The RW exhibited inferior corrosion resistance compared to the NW due to increased intermetallic phases, which was consistent with the mechanical results. However, the RW’s softened HAZ corrosion characteristics were inconsistent with its mechanical properties; its hardness and tensile strength were the lowest, but its corrosion resistance was not. Pitting corrosion was observed on the weld surfaces using the SEM.

Fabrication of Cd _0.5 Zn _0.5 Nd _x Fe _2–x O _4 nanoparticles, with x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08, has been carried out using a wet chemical co-precipitation method. The effect of the rare earth Nd ^3+ doping on the prepared ferrites was structurally investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) along with Rietveld refinement. The results indicate great crystallinity in the FCC Fd3m spinel structure of Cd _0.5 Zn _0.5 Nd _x Fe _2–x O _4 nanoparticles. The lattice parameter increases with the increase of doping concentration from 8.5378 until 8.5432 Å and the crystallite size obtained using Debye-Sherrer, Williamson–Hall, Size-strain plot (SSP), and Halder-Wagner (H-W) methods, decreases until the solubility limit of the materials is at x = 0.04. By using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the morphological analysis reveals the spherical shape of the samples with minor agglomeration with the aid of using a Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) capping agent. The grain size ranges from 14.37 to 15.24 nm. Raman spectroscopy verifies the incorporation of Nd ^3+ in the octahedral sites and the decrease in particle size. The elemental composition was verified using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The magnetic properties were studied using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and it shows superparamagnetic behavior with a decrease in the saturation magnetization from 2.207 to 1.918 emu g ^−1 and an increase in coercivity from 7.194 to 14.397 G. The prepared materials were tested as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sensors by studying their sensitivity, selectivity, optimum working temperature, response, and recovery times. Nd ^3+ doping shows a great increase in LPG sensing sensitivity 4 to 20 times than the pure samples. The doping concentration also decreases the response and recovery times.

Natural fiber composites provide an environmentally favorable and sustainable alternative to traditional materials, greatly reducing environmental impact. Aging tests are required to evaluate the long-term mechanical performance and durability of these composites under varied situations, ensuring their dependability and safety over time. This study investigates the effects of ecological aging on jute-banana fiber reinforced phenol-formaldehyde (JBP-F) composites. The experiment involved fabricating JBP-F composites using jute and banana fibers with varying weight ratios (60:40, 50:50, 40:60, 30:70) and subjecting them to various aging tests like long-time water resistance, accelerated water resistance, thermal aging, hydrothermal aging, soil burial test, and accelerated weathering test. The result showed that the composite with a 50:50 jute-banana fiber to resin ratio (JBP-F50) outperformed the other compositions examined in terms of aging resistance. This balanced ratio likely optimized fiber-matrix interaction, leading to superior strength and water resistance. Higher fiber content composites (like JBP-F60) absorbed more water due to weaker bonding, while lower fiber content (JBP-F30) suffered more in high temperatures. All composites experienced strength loss during thermal and hydrothermal aging due to heat and moisture cycles. JBP-F50 again showed the least degradation, possibly due to the resin’s ability to recover. In soil burial tests, biodegradation impacted strength, with higher fiber content composites (JBP-F60) degrading more. Finally, weathering tests revealed some surface deterioration due to UV radiation. However, the resin offered protection, with JBP-F30 (higher resin content) experiencing the most weight loss.JBP-F50, with its balanced fiber-resin ratio, demonstrated the best resistance to various environmental stresses, making it a promising option for sustainable composite applications.

Water reducing agent as an important admixture. It is used to decrease the initial water content in cement paste, improving its fluidity. Polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent (PCE) is a high-performance type with advantages such as low dosage, high water reduction rate, environmental friendliness, and a simple synthesis process. In this study, the third monomer (TPEG-SAA-SHES) was synthesized by modifying isopentenol polyoxyethylene ether (TPEG) with sodium hydroxyethyl sulfonate (SHES). Subsequently, a modified ether polycarboxylic acid-based water reducing agent (PCE-S) was synthesized with TPEG and acrylic acid (AA). The experimental conditions for the synthesis of PCE-S were optimized through orthogonal tests. The synthesized PCE-S showed a certain degree of improvement in the initial net slurry flow compared to PCE, with a maximum enhancement of 19.64%. The adsorption increased by 18.25% when the TSS dosage was 5%. PCE-S enhances the hydration products of cement, increasing the compactness of the structure. The product is environmentally friendly, safe, and durable, effectively reducing the dosage of additives and helping to cut costs. It lays the foundation for the next industrialized mass production.

Microspheres of cellulose acetate, characterized by a multi-layered, uniform, and continuous porous structure, were synthesized through the process of emulsion evaporation. Subsequent deacetylation facilitated the modification of the cellulose microspheres’ surface, which was functionalized with Reactive Red 120, serving as an affinity dye ligand. This modification yielded a cationic adsorbent. The adsorptive behavior of lysozyme from aqueous solutions, with lysozyme designated as the target protein, was examined in relation to the effects of pH and ionic strength. The adsorptive capacity of the cellulose microspheres, modified with Reactive Red 120, for lysozyme was determined to be 106.57 mg g ^−1 , exhibiting rapid equilibration within 40 min. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics were accurately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model, respectively, with correlation coefficients (R ^2 ) of 0.98 and 0.97. Furthermore, dynamic adsorption experiments revealed an enhanced adsorption capacity of 36.5 mg g ^−1 , significantly surpassing that of the unmodified microspheres. The cellulose microspheres, derived from cellulose acetate and modified accordingly, are environmentally benign and sustainable, thereby holding significant promise for various biological applications.

The Nobel Prizes in Physics (2022) and Chemistry (2023) heralded the recognition of quantum information science and the synthesis of quantum dots (QDs), respectively. This acknowledgment has propelled colloidal QDs and perovskite nanocrystals to the forefront of quantum technologies. Their distinct emission properties, facilitating the efficient generation of both single photons and photon pairs, render them particularly captivating. Moreover, their adaptability to diverse structures, ranging from traditional electronics to nanopatterned frameworks, underscores their pivotal role in shaping quantum technologies. Despite notable strides in synthesis, certain properties require refinement for enhanced applicability in quantum information, encompassing emission brightness, stability, single-photon indistinguishability, and entanglement fidelity of photon pairs. Here we offer an overview of recent achievements in plasmon-exciton quantum emitters (QEs) based on luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals. Emphasizing the utilization of the light-matter coupling phenomenon, we explore how this interaction enables the manipulation of quantum properties without altering the chemical structure of the emitters. This approach addresses critical aspects for quantum information applications, offering precise control over emission rate, intensity, and energy. The development of these hybrid systems represents a significant stride forward, demonstrating their potential to overcome existing challenges and advance the integration of QEs into cutting-edge quantum technology applications.

On-machine inspection has a significant impact on improving high-precision and efficient machining of sculptured surfaces. Due to the lack of machining information and the inability to adapt the parameters to the dynamic cutting conditions, theoretical modeling of profile inspection usually leads to insufficient adaptation, which causes inaccuracy problems. To address the above issues, a novel coupled model for profile inspection is proposed by combining the theoretical model and the data-driven model. The key process is to first realize local feature extraction based on the acquired vibration signals. The hybrid sampling model, which fuses geometric feature terms and vibration feature terms, is modeled by the lever principle. Then, the weight of each feature term is adaptively assigned by a multi-objective multi-verse optimizer. Finally, an inspection error compensation model based on the attention mechanism considering different probe postures is proposed to reduce the impact of pre-travel and radius errors on inspection accuracy. The anisotropy of the probe system error and its influence mechanism on the inspection accuracy are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Compared with the previous models, the proposed hybrid profile inspection model can significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of on-machine sampling. The proposed compensation model is able to correct the inspection errors with better accuracy. Simulations and experiments demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed methods. The proposed model and corresponding new findings contribute to high-precision and efficient on-machine inspection, and help to understand the coupling mechanism of inspection errors.

Wood-plastic composites are relatively novel composite materials that consist of a blend of wood flour waste with high-density polyethylene and polypropylene plastic waste, designed for use in ceiling applications. Various samples were produced using different ratios from the total weight, including 20:80, 30:70, and 40:60, with sieve sizes of 0.425 mm, 1.18 mm, and 2 mm. The composites were created by melting plastics and sawdust at a temperature of 180 ^0 c utilizing the hot-press moldings technique employing diverse formulations. The properties of sample composites were analyzed experimentally based on ASTM standards to investigate water absorption levels as well as flexural strength, impact resistance hardness along with surface morphology via the design of experiments. This research study indicates that nine composite formulations consisting of HDPE and PP plastics combined with wood flour can produce favorable physio-mechanical properties. Among these various combination specimens tested in this study FS3/FC30N exhibited excellent physio-mechanical properties; including desirable values such as water absorption level at 5.5103%, flexural strength at 61.12 Mpa, impact resistance measuring 33.45 J cm ^−2 , and hardness rating up to 80 RHB. Thus it is highly recommended for use in chipboard ceiling panel applications due to its potential benefits.

Green synthesis techniques have recently become more popular due to the expanding interest in nanotechnology and the need for ecologically friendly synthesis processes. This work examines the environment friendly production of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) by a microwave-assisted technique, utilizing Pistia Stratiotes leaf extract as a reducing agent. The optical and structural properties of the produced ZnO NPs were analyzed using UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and x-ray Diffraction (XRD). The findings indicated that the ZnO NPs displayed shapes consisting spherical, flower and sheet, with an average size of 35 nm which was verified by SEM and TEM. The XRD examination confirmed the presence of a hexagonal wurtzite crystalline structure, while the FTIR analysis identified a distinct peak at 578 cm ^−1 , which indicates the stretching mode of Zn-O bonds. The antibacterial and antifungal properties of the substance were evaluated against Staphylococcus Aureus, Escherichia Coli , and Candida Albicans . The results demonstrated notable effectiveness, as indicated by inhibition zones measuring 16–20.4 mm, 17–21.3 mm, and 13–17.2 mm correspondingly. In addition, the ZnO NPs exhibited specific anti-cancer effects on SK-MEL-28 melanoma cell lines, with an IC _50 value of 51.05 μg ml ^−1 , suggesting potential uses in therapy. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using microwave-assisted green synthesis to create ZnO NPs with favorable characteristics for biomedical purposes, with a particular focus on sustainable manufacturing of nanomaterials. The results indicate that these ZnO NPs show great potential for application in antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer therapies, leading to developments in the field of medical nanotechnology.

The over-production of free radicals in the body causes oxidant damage in the body. Currently, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are gaining attention of most scientists because of their excellent physical, chemical, and biological properties. In this work, the ZnO NPs were synthesized using the petal extract of C. officinalis L. An absorbance spectrum of the synthesized ZnO NPs was recorded using an ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer. The absorbance band around 368 nm confirms the formation of ZnO NPs. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis clearly shows that the most of the ZnO NPs are spherical in shape with average particle size ∼ 16 nm. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) result demonstrates the spherical morphology with large agglomeration of the particles. The energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) result confirms the presence of Zn in the synthesized NPs’. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks represent the crystalline structure of the ZnO NPs with average particle size ∼ 27.22 nm. Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectrum of synthesized ZnO NPs was recorded in the range of 4000-500 cm ^−1 . The ester and carboxylic groups were found at 1017 cm ^−1 , 952 cm ^−1 , 688 cm ^−1 , 609 cm ^−1 , and 514 cm ^−1 due to the presence of Zn-O band stretch in the FT-IR spectrum. Further synthesized material was evaluated by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay to evaluate its antioxidant activity. It showed that ZnO NPs exhibited significant antioxidant activity through scavenging DPPH free radicals. Thus, it could be seen that the synthesis of naturally occurring plant product ZnO NPs acts as an alternative chemical antioxidant. Hence, the herbal synthesized ZnO NPs are proven to be a potent antioxidant agent and can be used in several medicinal applications.

Wire-feed laser metal deposition (LMD-W) offers a high deposition rate and low cost, making it an effective solution for reducing costs and enhancing efficiency in manufacturing large-scale titanium aerospace components. Currently, the material used for LMD-W is typically a single alloy wire, which limits the flexibility and functionality of manufacturing composite materials. This work employed a novel concurrent wire-powder feeding laser metal deposition (LMD-WP) process to manufacture TiC/Ti-6Al-4V composite. In the LMD-WP method, Ti-6Al-4V wire was fed laterally, while TiC particles were delivered coaxially. Only 1.0 wt% TiC particles were added to prevent excessive TiC, which could cause stress concentration and increase crack sensitivity. The microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and TiC/Ti-6Al-4V composite were investigated. The results indicate that with coaxial TiC particle addition, the α -Ti in TiC/Ti-6Al-4V is noticeably refined. Additionally, in situ TiC acts as heterogeneous nucleation sites, restricting α -Ti growth and reducing its aspect ratio. Furthermore, TiC particles weakened the α -Ti texture in the (0001) and (11–20) directions. Moreover, adding TiC particles significantly enhanced tensile strength, with the yield strength reaching 950 MPa and the ultimate tensile strength reaching 1048 MPa. Compared to Ti-6Al-4V alloy fabricated by LMD-W, this represents an increase of 11.25% and 10.72%, respectively. The improvement in tensile properties is principally ascribed to grain boundary strengthening, Orowan strengthening and dislocation density strengthening. This work introduces an innovative approach and abundant data for the additive manufacturing of TiC/Ti-6Al-4V composite with high efficiency and low cost.

The inflammatory reaction significantly impedes the neurogenic process during the restoration of peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Therefore, establishing a non-inflammatory environment is crucial for effective nerve regeneration. This study proposes the use of shell-core structured nanofibers with sequential anti-inflammatory and pro-neurogenic activities to repair PNI. Icariin (ICA), known for its anti-inflammatory effects, was blended with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to form the shell layer’s spinning solution. Concurrently, glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) was combined with graphene oxide (GO) to create the core layer’s spinning solution. These solutions were then subjected to co-axial electrospinning, resulting in shell-core structured GDNF@GO-ICA@PLGA nanofibers. Additionally, a control group of unordered GDNF/GO/ICA/PLGA nanofibers was prepared using conventional electrospinning. The resulting GDNF@GO-ICA@PLGA nanofibers exhibited distinct fibrous structures with a clear shell-core architecture and demonstrated mechanical properties similar to the control group. Notably, the shell-core structured GDNF@GO-ICA@PLGA nanofibers displayed unique staged release kinetics: over 90% ICA was released priorly within the first 0 to 13 days, followed by GDNF release from days 9 to 31. Furthermore, the GDNF@GO-ICA@PLGA nanofibers showed excellent biocompatibility with Schwann cells. In vitro results highlighted the potent anti-inflammatory capabilities of ICA released from the shell layer, while GDNF released from the core layer effectively induced neurogenic differentiation of Schwann cells. The GDNF@GO-ICA@PLGA nanofibers were then processed into a nerve conduit and applied to a 10 mm rat sciatic PNI model. The staged release of ICA and GDNF facilitated by the GDNF@GO-ICA@PLGA nanofibers created a non-inflammatory environment before initiating nerve regeneration, leading to improved PNI restoration. This study underscores the importance of shell-core structured nanofibers in sequentially mediating anti-inflammation and neurogenesis, offering a novel approach for addressing PNI.

This study evaluates the impact of incorporating varying contents (10–40 wt%) and molar concentrations (0.001–1 M) of citric acid solutions, as transient liquid phases in the Cold Sintering Assisted Sintering (CSAS) process of dysprosium zirconate (Dy _2 Zr _2 O _7 ). CSAS processed samples achieved relative densities up to 98% of the theoretical maximum and significantly increased Vickers microhardness by over 2.5 times, compared to the traditional ‘press and fired’ sintering method. The Dy _2 Zr _2 O _7 crystal structure remained consistent with the fluorite-type, with no secondary phases detected. Our findings underscore the benefits of using CSAS to enhance the mechanical strength of Dy _2 Zr _2 O _7 , while reducing the lengthy processing times at very high temperatures typically required for sintering refractory materials such as lanthanide zirconates.

Marine fouling is a widespread problem in the maritime industry, causing significant damage to equipment and vessels. Polybenzoxazine (PBz) is a resin that is both remarkable and captivating, and it has a wide range of sophisticated uses. Due to their distinctive characteristics, benzoxazines have sparked the interest of scholars globally. However, most benzoxazine resin production and processing depend on petroleum resources, particularly those based on bisphenol A. This study aimed to create new benzoxazine monomers using bio-based raw materials, primarily motivated by the environmental ramifications. The main goal of this study is to synthesize a benzoxazine molecule, specifically (2E,6E)-2,6-bis(3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[e][1,3]oxazin-6-yl)methylene) cyclohexane-1-one, abbreviated as (CHPE), by employing an arylidene base. Later, the chemical was used as a modifier for the cellulose acetate (CA) matrix to create film samples. The primary objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of these film samples in preventing fouling. The CHPE molecule was produced using a bis(arylidene) cyclohexanone diol and analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques, respectively. The films were fabricated by blending various weight proportions. The composition of the (CHPE-CA) films was determined by FTIR analysis, while their morphology was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal stability of the films was studied using Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). This study investigated the antifouling properties of polymer sheet compositions containing varying amounts of CA at two different processing temperatures, 180 °C and 200 °C and without curing. The results demonstrated the potential of incorporating CA into the polymer matrix to enhance antifouling performance. Among the polymer compositions tested, the 20% CA composition exhibited the highest percentage reduction in fouling at both processing temperatures, suggesting that a small amount of CA can contribute to effective antifouling properties.

The determination of the dielectric breakdown strengths of microstructurally heterogeneous materials has been a primarily experimental endeavor. We report the development of a microstructure-level model for computationally predicting the breakdown strength and analyzing the interactions between electromagnetic pulses (EMP) and the constituents in a composite of cellulose-based paper and mineral oil found in electrical transformers. The model allows explicit simulation of the material breakdown process by tracking the transition of dielectric constituents from non-conductive to conductive states. The focus is on the electric fields induced in the materials and the overall conditions for dielectric breakdown (defined as the onset of avalanche) caused by the electric field induced in the composite. Responses to three distinct pulse shapes, i.e., Steep Front (SF), Lightning (L), and AC with spectra spanning 60–9 × 10 ^5 Hz are considered. It is found that the breakdown strength of the material is significantly affected by microstructure heterogeneities, the spatial variations of the constituent properties, and the pulse shapes. A probabilistic characterization of the breakdown strength is computationally obtained and compared with experimental measurements. Although one particular material is analyzed, the model and approach are applicable to other heterogeneous materials as well.

Exponential growth in infrastructure projects, stimulated by emerging sophisticated technologies have been instrumental in the salutary proliferation of the construction sector, globally. An indubitable adversity of the rapid boom in the construction industry has been the rampant cumulative fallout of burgeoning waste during the demolition and construction phases of restoration. The current study explored the propriety of replacing natural coarse aggregate by low-quality recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) with varying proportions, along with silica fume (SF) and polypropylene (PP) fibers as admixtures, for the preparation of concrete. As the quality of RCA is determined by the history of its parent demolished structure, this investigation was preceded by assessment of the properties of RCA. A statistical approach using design of experiments, adopted to determine the coherent combinations of RCA and admixtures, yielded 16 combinations. Accordingly, concrete specimens were prepared with various quantities of RCA in place of natural coarse aggregate. Optimum proportions of the ingredients were inferred, based on the compressive strength attained by the concrete specimens. Further strength property evaluation was conducted, using these low-quality RCA treated with cement and silica fume slurry. Based on the strength results, 75% slurry infiltrated RCA, coupled with 10% SF and 0.5% PP, provided better strength in compression, tension and flexure. Scanning electron microscopy study, adopted for characterization of the micro-structural slurry-infiltrated RCA, shows the presence of strong interfacial transition zone in the treated RCA concrete. Thus, this study confirmed the efficacy of low-quality RCA as a promising material for structural construction, concurrent with a solution to various ecological disruptions precipitated by infrastructure construction and demolition wastes.

Coatings with different boron content were prepared by magnetic field-assisted Co-based laser metal deposition on 300 M ultra-high strength steel. The effects of boron content on the magnetic properties, mechanical properties, friction and wear properties, and corrosion resistance of the coating were investigated. The research results indicate that adding 6 wt% of boron to cobalt alloy in a 35 mT alternating magnetic field is beneficial for refining the microstructure, which can improve the mechanical properties of the coating. This research also discusses the effect of boron content on the wear and corrosion resistance of the coating. The results show that adding boron content enhances the magnetostrictive effect, and reduces the elastic modulus of the laser metal deposition coating while ensuring its hardness, thereby improving the wear and corrosion resistance of the laser metal deposition layer. The hardness of the coating can reach 1215 HV. The friction coefficient and corrosion current density of the coating are reduced by 26.9% and 60.2% respectively compared with the substrate. This work can help promote the application of laser metal deposition technology, reduce costs, and ensure performance.

This study investigates the effects of electron irradiation on the structural, surface energy, and tribomechanical properties of two key thermoplastics: polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The experimental methods included electron beam irradiation using the ILU-10 pulsed linear accelerator, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness testing, surface roughness assessment, tribology tests, and contact angle measurements.The FT-IR analysis revealed significant chemical changes on the surfaces of the polymers, including oxidation processes and the breaking of molecular bonds. XRD analysis showed an increase in the crystallinity of PTFE after irradiation, while the structure of PEEK remained stable. Microhardness testing indicated a notable increase in hardness for both polymers, particularly for PTFE, suggesting cross-linking of molecular chains. Surface roughness measurements demonstrated a decrease in roughness for both irradiated polymers. Tribology tests revealed that electron irradiation increased the coefficient of friction for PTFE and PEEK under various loads, which can be attributed to the alterations in their surface properties. Contact angle measurements indicated improved wettability of the irradiated surfaces, especially for PEEK, due to the formation of new functional groups. The total surface energy increased for both polymers post-irradiation, as determined using the Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaeble method. Electron irradiation leads to significant modifications in the surface and bulk properties of PEEK and PTFE, enhancing their tribomechanical and adhesive properties. These changes open new opportunities for the application of these materials in various engineering fields where specific performance characteristics are required.

Carbon-based materials are commonly utilized in water filtration and purification due to their affordability and environmental friendliness. This study investigates the effectiveness of four different carbon-based materials: activated carbon (AC), graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and polyethylene (PE) in crude oil–water separation. To test the effectiveness of the separation, light transmission measurements were carried out with the aid of Arduino UNO using a red, green, and blue (RGB) light spectral sensor. The results revealed that the emulsions with AC was the most effective material in the separation, followed by rGO, and GO was the least effective. To explain the mechanism behind the separation performance, the carbon materials have been characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The effectiveness of AC and rGO in the separation process was directly related to the quantity of surface oxides. The experimental results are perfectly agreed with published Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of HOMO–LUMO gap energies. AC shows the best performance and the smallest gap, which indicates that it requires less energy for electrons transition between the HOMO and LUMO. This phenomenon can be attributed to the affinity towards hydrogen in the hydrocarbon chains in crude oil.

Mold on the phosphogypsum wallboard seriously hinders the resource utilization of phosphogypsum, and incorporating inorganic antibacterial materials can effectively inhibit mold growth. In this study, Escherichia coli and wallboard mold were used as experimental strains, and the antibacterial activity of antibacterial material-modified calcined gypsum from phosphogypsum (CPG) was determined using the inhibition zone method and mold surface growth area analysis. Characterization techniques such as XRF, XRD, and SEM were used to study the phase composition and microstructure of the samples, and an antibacterial model was constructed to explore the antibacterial mechanism. The results indicated that using E. coli as an indicator bacterium, ZnO-0.05TiO _2 -CPG exhibited the best bactericidal effect, while ZnO-CPG exhibited the best bacteriostatic effect. Against mold, ZnO contents of 2.5% or 5% demonstrated strong antibacterial properties, with compressive strengths of 10.1 MPa and 9.95 MPa, respectively, meeting the requirements of ≥3.50 MPa for compressive strength according to the ‘Lightweight Partition Plates for Building’ standard (GB/T 23451 2009). The superior antibacterial performance of ZnO compared to TiO _2 is attributed to the slow release of Zn ^2+ , which disrupts cell membranes and the generated reactive oxygen species inhibit cell growth.

This study investigates ZnO/TiO _2 nanocomposites synthesized by the sol–gel method for their potential application in textile wastewater treatment. The physicochemical properties of these materials were comprehensively characterized using various analytical techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and UV–visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. XRD and XRF analyses confirmed the formation of a ZnO/TiO _2 heterostructure. TEM images revealed a quasi-spherical morphology with slight agglomeration. The ZnO/TiO _2 nanocomposite with a 1:5 molar ratio of Zn(II):Ti(IV) showed the highest BET surface area (91.345 m ^2 g ^−1 ) and the narrowest band gap (Eg = 3.06 eV). This composite demonstrated efficient degradation of methylene blue dye under sunlight irradiation and exhibited 100% antibacterial activity against S. typhi and S. aureus at concentrations ≥5 mg ml ^−1 , indicating its potential for treating textile wastewater.

This study investigates the utilization of high-ash coal as an alternative reductant in the smelting of silicomanganese, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of traditional coke-based processes. Experiments were conducted using an ore-thermal furnace with a transformer power of 200 kVA to simulate industrial conditions. The charge consisted of manganese ore (Mn - 36%), slag from refined ferromanganese production (MnO - 25%), and high-ash coal (ash content 40%–50%). Chemical analysis of the produced alloy showed a composition of Mn–70%, Si–20%, C–1.28%, P–0.06%, and S–0.05%, meeting the standards for silicomanganese. The results demonstrate that high-ash coal can replace coke without compromising the quality of the alloy. This approach not only indirect CO _2 emissions but also leverages the abundant availability of high-ash coal, which is often discarded as waste. The study highlights the potential for significant environmental benefits and cost savings, making this method a viable alternative for sustainable industrial practices. The findings support the industrial application of high-ash coal in silicomanganese production, contributing to more eco-friendly and economically feasible metallurgical processes.

Integration of sensors with engineering thermoplastics allows to track their health and surrounding stimuli. As one of vital backbones to construct sensor systems, copper (Cu) is highly conductive and cost-effective, yet tends to easily oxidize during and after processing. Herein, an in-situ integrated sensor system on engineering thermoplastics via hybrid laser direct writing is proposed, which primarily consists of laser-passivated functional Cu interconnects and laser-induced carbon-based sensors. Through a one-step photothermal treatment, the resulting functional Cu interconnects after reductive sintering and passivation are capable of resisting long-term oxidation failure at high temperatures (up to 170 °C) without additional encapsulations. Interfacing with signal processing units, such an all-in-one system is applied for long-term and real-time temperature monitoring. This integrated sensor system with facile laser manufacturing strategies holds potentials for health monitoring and fault diagnosis of advanced equipment such as aircrafts, automobiles, high-speed trains, and medical devices.

Real-time physiological information monitoring can predict and prevent disease, or improve treatment by early diagnosis. A comprehensive and continuous monitoring of human health requires highly integrated wearable and comfortable sensing devices. To address this need, we propose a low-cost electronic fabric-enabled multifunctional flexible sensing integration platform that includes a flexible pressure sensor for monitoring postural pressure, a humidity sensor for monitoring the humidity of the skin surface, and a flexible temperature sensor for visualizing the ambient temperature around the human body. Thanks to the unique rough surface texture, hierarchical structure, and robust electromechanical features of the MXene-modified nonwoven fabrics, the flexible pressure sensor can achieve a monitoring sensitivity of 1529.1 kPa ^−1 and a pressure range of 150 kPa, which meets the demand for human pressure detection. In addition, the unique porous structure of the fabric and the stacked multilayer structure of MXene enable the humidity sensor to exhibit extremely high monitoring sensitivity, even through clothing, and still be able to detect the humidity on the skin surface. Temperature sensors based on screen-printed thermochromic liquid crystals enable visual monitoring in the range of 0 °C–65 °C. Through further integration with flexible printed circuit board circuits, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept device that enables real-time monitoring of human physiological information such as physical pressure, humidity, and ambient temperature environment, suggesting that the device provides an excellent platform for the development of commercially viable wearable healthcare monitors.

We provide a mathematical description, based on d -wave Eliashberg theory, of the strong correlation between the experimentally observed softening of Raman modes associated with in-plane oxygen motions and the corresponding superconducting critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ , as a function of oxygen doping x , in YBa _2 Cu _3 O _x . The theoretical model provides a direct link between physical trends of soft optical A _g (in-plane) oxygen modes, the level of oxygen doping x , and the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}$ . Different regimes observed in the trend of $T_\mathrm{c}$ vs doping can be related to corresponding regimes of optical phonon softening in the Raman spectra. These results provide further evidence related to the physical origin of high-temperature superconductivity in rare-earth cuprate oxides and to the significant role of electron–phonon coupling therein.

The bonding strengths, microscopic characteristics and fracture properties of borosilicate glass-to-SA105 carbon steel seals were investigated, and two different glass-to-metal bonding mechanisms were compared. First, a mechanical interlocking mechanism was found via precipitates formed from chemical reactions at the interface of the seal bonded to unoxidized SA105 carbon steel. Second, a transitional layer mechanism was proven by the dissolution of metal oxides, which was on the surface of preoxidized SA105 carbon steel, into the glass. The bonding strength results showed that both mechanisms effectively contributed to the joining of dissimilar phases, but the effect of the latter mechanism was more prominent than that of the former mechanism. Various microstructures and chemical compositions of the surface oxide scales were obtained by applying different preoxidation conditions to SA105 carbon steel. Additionally, different sealing interfaces were reported through this process. The width of the interfacial transitional layer ranged from 0.5 μm to 1.5 μm, and the strength of the seal was closely related to this width. The sealing of SA105 carbon steel that was preoxidized at 800 °C for 30 min with a moderate width of the transitional layer had an optimal shear strength of 25.4 MPa. However, a wide transitional layer composed of the remaining oxide scales deteriorated the strength of the seal. In addition, fracture analysis of the seals after the shear test was conducted, and the intrinsic correlations between the macroscopic shear strength and microscopic bonding mechanism were established. The present work should provide a reference for the characterization of bonding strength in joining dissimilar materials.

In this paper, we report on enhancing the biocompatibility properties of Hydroxyapatite-Titanium (HA-Ti) thin films fabricated using the co-sputtering method. By adjusting the HA/Ti ratio through varying the sputtering power of Ti, we obtained HA-Ti thin films with different crystal structures, morphologies, and hydrophilic properties. HA-Ti thin films sputtered at different titanium powers of 80, 100, 120, 140, and 160 W will obtain thin films with larger grain sizes and poorer crystallinity, respectively. However, their hydrophilic properties increase as the contact angle decreases from 78° to 20° degrees. In vitro BHK cell tests indicated that the HA-Ti thin film had excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, this material is suitable for biological applications and has significant potential in medical implant technology.

Metakaolin has been incorporated into high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete for wellbore wall drilling to enhance its durability in strata with highly mineralized water. This study established a benchmark, utilizing fly ash, slag powder, and metakaolin as the factors in an orthogonal test to assess the durability of concrete against sulfate attack. The range analysis and an integrated balance method were employed to optimize the mix proportion, the optimized mix proportion of high-performance concrete was determined as concrete: cement: fly ash: slag powder: metakaolin: pumping agents: gravel: sand: water: polyvinyl alcohol = 1: 0.2: 0.075: 0.05: 0.106: 2.767: 1.556: 0.371: 0.003. The apparent and microscopic morphologies before and after the erosion of both the benchmark group and optimized mix proportion group were investigated. The triaxial permeability tests were conducted on these groups under varying confining pressures to elucidate concrete permeability trends. Additionally, a damage constitutive model for concrete under a sulfate attack was formulated based on the durability tests. This study could provide valuable insights into the industrial utilization of concrete in deep shafts within highly mineralized water strata in Northwestern China.

This study aims to investigate the structural, thermal, and spectral characteristics, along with the ultra-violet (UV) absorption of various marine benthos exoskeletons, such as various species of crabs ( Portunus sanguinolentus, Portunus pelagicus, Charybdis feriata ) and mantis shrimp ( Oratosquilla oratoria ). Their unique properties and ability to survive in harsh oceanic environments make them interesting research subjects. This research utilized powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to determine the crystal structure of the benthic varieties. The sample surface was analyzed using high-resolution micrographs obtained from field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), which identified the presence of chitin and calcite in the marine benthos. This was further confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The optical characteristics were investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy. The proximate analysis revealed high protein content in the mantis shrimp exoskeleton compared to other crab species, highlighting its excellent UV absorption characteristics. Overall, this research has the potential to broaden our understanding of marine organisms, which can have potential applications in biotechnology and materials science to develop nature-inspired innovative materials sustainably.

Sub-wavelength nanostructure lattices provide versatile platforms for light control and the basis for various novel phenomena and applications in physics, material science, chemistry, biology, and energy. The thriving study of nanostructure lattices is building on the remarkable progress of nanofabrication techniques, especially for the possibility of fabricating larger-area patterns while achieving higher-quality lattices, complex shapes, and hybrid materials units. In this review, we present a comprehensive review of techniques for large-area fabrication of optical nanostructure arrays, encompassing direct writing, self-assembly, controllable deposition, and nanoimprint/print methods. Furthermore, a particular focus is made on the recent improvement of unit accuracy and diversity, leading to integrated and multifunctional structures for devices and applications.

The use of carbon fiber-reinforced resin matrix composites instead of metals to manufacture cryogenic propellant tanks for spacecrafts is a development trend in the world aerospace industry. Cryogenic mechanical properties of the composites should be investigated in detail due to that the ultra-low temperature environment may cause micro cracks in the composites, leading to propellant leakage. In the present study, cryogenic tensile properties of a carbon fiber reinforced silicon-containing epoxy resin aomposite are investigated using experimental and numerical simulation methods. A silicon-containing epoxy resin with excellent cryogenic mechanical properties is developed by introducing a synthesized organic silicon polymer epoxidized polysiloxane and Nano-SiO _2 into bisphenol F type epoxy resin. The tensile strength and modulus of the silicon-containing epoxy resin at −180 °C are 202.63 MPa and 7.81 GPa, which are 16.71% and 3.03% higher than those of bisphenol F type epoxy resin. The tensile strength of the silicon-containing epoxy resin at −180 °C is increased by 107.7% compared to that at room temperature, and the modulus at −180 °C is nearly twice that at room temperature. The carbon fiber reinforced silicon-containing epoxy resin composite is prepared by vacuum injection molding. The finite element model for the representative volume element of the composite unidirectional plate is established. The random sequence expansion method is used to randomly distribute the carbon fibers and simulate the thermal residual stress, the elastic performance, and the damage of the composite at cryogenic environments. Through comparison, it is found that the simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The simulation reliability for cryogenic mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced resin matrix composites is verified. It is expected to provide a reference for the analysis and evaluation of cryogenic mechanical properties of composite tanks.

3D Tribo-Nanoprinting (3D TNP), which uses a highly controllable tribological contact to deposit tribofilms, has been proposed as a manufacturing method for nanoscale structures. Inspired by this, we show for the first time, as a proof of concept, the ability to electrically functionalise tribofilms for potential use in the manufacture of structures with nanoscale thickness. Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) tribofilms have been generated to include varying concentrations of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) resulting in them becoming electrically conductive when tested using conductive atomic force microscopy. In its highest GNP concentration, approximately 55% of the surface of the tribofilm was able to sustain current up to a threshold of 245 pA. The higher graphene content led to a suppression in film formation and decreased substrate coverage. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a dual-layered tribofilm with a carbon-rich layer above a pure layer of ZDDP tribofilm. Within the carbon-rich layer, the GNPs formed into scrolls which created an internal network through which current could flow, being limited by the insulating pure ZDDP layer at the film-substrate interface, and the presence of surface graphene sheets. A modified lateral force microscopy procedure supported the presence of surface graphene sheets. Despite limited deposition precision in terms of homogeneity and distribution of the tribofilms, this work provides a step towards the use of 3D TNP for the manufacture of electronic structures on the nanoscale by proving that tribofilms can be functionalised by the addition of particle additives.

In this study, the electrochemical properties of aqueous chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ) in the presence of Fe (II) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry at a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. The results showed that an EC′ reaction mechanism occurs, where electrochemically generated CPZ species (cation radical) are reduced by Fe (II) back to the parent CPZ, and Fe (II) is oxidized to Fe (III). The detection limit, sensitivity, and dynamic concentration ranges were 2.8 μM, 0.0188 μA μM ^−1 and 10–166 μM. Based on the electrochemical results, the interaction of chlorpromazine (CPZ), a widely used antipsychotic tranquillizer, with the allosteric protein, hemoglobin, has been studied. First, four groups of six female rats weighing 400–450 g were selected. The rats were injected with different concentrations of chlorpromazine over a 3-week period, and the concentrations of hemoglobin, methemoglobin, red blood cells (RBCs), and hematocrit (HCT) were analyzed in the blood of each rat. After injection of different concentrations of the drug, the amount of hemoglobin) as a source of Fe (II)) decreased, but the amount of methemoglobin (as a source of Fe (III) increased. In addition, UV spectroscopic measurements in the range of 200–700 nm indicate the conversion of hemoglobin to methemoglobin in chlorpromazine-treated rats compared to the normal sample, and there was a direct relationship between the increasing methemoglobin concentration of chlorpromazine. Furthermore, the amount of RBC and HCT was measured. The results showed that RBC (21.05%–56.52%) and HCT (10.04%–53.19%) decreased. Finally, this study demonstrates a new mechanism for the effects of CPZ on hemoglobin iron in rat blood based on electrochemical results.

Traditional methods for surface pretreatment of carbon fibers often rely on the use of precious metals like palladium and silver as activators to enhance surface reactivity through redox reactions, achieving metallization. However, such approaches are costly and economically inefficient. This study employed a cost-effective copper (Cu)-nickel (Ni) colloid mixture as an activator and investigated its effectiveness in enhancing surface reactivity. Meanwhile, it examined the influence of various parameters, such as pH value, reducing agent (formaldehyde (HCHO) concentration, temperature, and deposition duration, on the morphology and structure of copper-electrodeposited carbon fibers. To characterize the treated samples, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) were adopted, shedding light on the mechanism underlying copper electrodeposition on the carbon fiber surface. The results indicate that Cu-Ni colloid mixture activation exhibits significant improvements. The optimal conditions for uniform and smooth copper electrodeposition on the carbon fiber surface identified as follows: a pH value of 13.5, a HCHO concentration of 15 ml L ^−1 , a temperature of 50 °C, and a deposition duration of 5 min. Consequently, these results represent a cost-effective alternative to traditional precious metal-based activation methods, with promising applications in surface pretreatment for carbon fibers.

In this paper, the MIG welding process is utilized to weld a 3 mm thick 5052 aluminum alloy plate by using ER5356 welding wire as filler. The effects of different welding speeds on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld are systematically studied utilizing a metallographic microscope, x-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, room temperature tensile, and microhardness. It was found that there were pore defects in the samples at lower or higher welding speeds, and there was no penetration at the maximum welding speed. When the welding speed is 650 mm min ^−1 , the weld is well-formed, the surface is flat without pores, the fish scale is evenly distributed, and the weld shows good penetration. The intermetallic compounds of all the welds are mainly composed of α (Al), Mg _2 Si, Al _3 Fe, and Al _3 Mg _2 . The mechanical properties of the samples show that the hardness of the weld reaches the maximum value of 56.7HV at this welding speed, and the tensile strength and elongation are 210 MPa and 14.3%, respectively. The fracture is located at the junction of the base metal and the heat-affected zone, and the fracture type showed typical ductile fracture.

This study delves into the intricate dynamics of ligand engineering for the synthesis of Methyl Ammonium Lead Bromide (MAPbBr _3 ) nanocrystals (NCs), which exhibit immense potential in optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. Our focus centres on the role of the quaternary ammonium molecule CTAB as a ligand in stabilizing MAPbBr _3 NCs. This also addresses the challenges related to the stability and surface defects of NCs that hinder their commercial viability. Employing a modified ligand-assisted reprecipitation technique (LARP) with a dual solvent system, we optimized the CTAB concentration to 0.05 mmol, resulting in MAPbBr _3 NCs with an impressive 88% quantum yield. XPS and FTIR analyses confirm the presence and binding of CTAB on the NC surface. The MAPbBr _3 -CTAB NCs exhibit higher exciton–phonon binding energy, enhancing their optical properties. Despite an unfavourable geometric fit, CTAB is effective in surface defect passivation due to its binding, solvation, and desorption energy during the dynamic binding process. 2D-DOSY NMR reveals approximately 66% CTAB bound to the NC surface. A comparative study involving MAPbBr _3 -OA, OLA, and MAPbBr _3 -CTAB deposited on LEDs demonstrates the superior performance of the latter, achieving a luminous efficiency of 42.18 lm W ^−1 at 1.2 ml deposition. These findings highlight the efficacy of CTAB in achieving high-purity green luminescence, aligning with BT.2020 display colour standards and paving the way for advanced optoelectronic applications. The successful synthesis and improved performance of MAPbBr _3 -CTAB NCs underscore their potential as a promising material for future optoelectronic and photovoltaic technologies.

Hydrogen production via electrocatalytic water splitting is generally considered as an efficient and eco-friendly strategy for energy storage. The exploration of novel electrocatalytic cathode material towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has never ended. Laser induced graphene (LIG), as a cheap and porous material with large surface area, not only can be used as a carrier of active substances for collaborative catalysis towards hydrogen evolution, but also can be directly used as catalytic electrode via heteroatoms doping. We synthesized Fe _3 O _4 embedded LIG via laser ablation of polyimide (PI)/Fe(acac) _3 film and tested its HER electrocatalytic performance. An overpotential of 269 mV was obtained under the current density of 10 mA cm ^−2 with a slight current decay in the 10 h chronoamperometric examination in 1 M KOH electrolyte. This work provides an insight into methods of optimizing electrochemical properties and improving catalytic activity of LIG based materials. The performance of our Fe _3 O _4 embedded LIG demonstrates the potential of LIG based materials as next generation HER electrocatalyst.

High-temperature thin-film thermocouples (TFTCs) have attracted significant attention in the aerospace and steel metallurgy industry. However, previous studies on TFTCs have primarily focused on the two-dimensional planar-type, whose thermal sensitive area has to be perpendicular to the test environment, and therefore affects the thermal fluids pattern or loses accuracy. In order to address this problem, recent studies have developed three-dimensional probe-type TFTCs, which can be set parallel to the test environment. Nevertheless, the probe-type TFTCs are limited by their measurement threshold and poor stability at high temperatures. To address these issues, in this study, we propose a novel probe-type TFTC with a sandwich structure. The sensitive layer is compounded with indium oxide doped zinc oxide and fabricated using screen-printing technology. With the protection of sandwich structure on electrode film, the sensor demonstrates robust high-temperature stability, enabling continuous working at 1200 °C above 5 h with a low drift rate of 2.3 °C·h ^−1 . This sensor exhibits a high repeatability of 99.3% when measuring a wide range of temperatures, which is beyond the most existing probe-type TFTCs reported in the literature. With its excellent high-temperature performance, this temperature sensor holds immense potentials for enhancing equipment safety in the aerospace engineering and ensuring product quality in the steel metallurgy industry.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of volume fraction of continuous carbon fiber and sample length on buckling characteristics of polysilicon. A statistical design of 12 samples were formulated with constant cross-section area of 2500 mm ^2 using Design of Experiment software (DOE). The samples were sketched using ABAQUS 2019 software, and the total buckling force each sample was estimated. The estimated buckling forces were statically evaluated as a response using DOE. The estimated forces of 3.48776e07, 4.00652e07 and 5.78142e07 newton for the simulated samples of 100 mm in length and 0,15, and 25% volume fraction respectively, is an indication of positive effect of fiber volume fraction on the necessary force for buckling. In addition, similar tendency was found in other samples (the higher fiber volume fractions the higher buckling force). However, the estimated buckling force for each sample was negatively affected with length of the sample. The result indicated a value of 4.00652E+07, 5.00447E+06 and 1.80390E+06 newton at a constant fiber volume fraction and different length of 100, 300 and 500 mm respectively. The statistical analysis of the simulated buckling force showed a signification design, and the date of one factor effect is highly supported by the simulated buckling forces. The equation of a significant design can be used to estimate the buckling force at any fiber volume fraction and sample length.

The high-temperature lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) corrosion resistance and ring compression performance of the Fe15Cr11Al2Si, Fe15Cr11Al0.5Y, and Fe15Cr11Al2Si0.5Y coatings were investigated. Even if the corrosion test temperature reaches 800 °C, all these coatings can effectively protect the steel cladding tube. After the corrosion test temperature exceeded 660 °C, an obvious Al-rich oxide layer was formed on the surface of the coating, and Al element enrichment occurred at the interface between the coating and the substrate. After the corrosion test at 800 °C, holes appeared in the thick interface layer of the Fe15Cr11Al2Si0.5Y coating. The Fe15Cr11Al2Si coating cracked after the ring compression test with a deformation rate of 3%, and the coating peeled off after the deformation rate reached 5%. When the deformation rate reached 5%, there was still no cracking in the Fe15Cr11Al0.5Y coating. When the deformation rate reached 30%, the coating cracked, but the cracked coating was still tightly bonded with the substrate. The Fe15Cr11Al2Si0.5Y coating has the worst compression performance, even if the deformation rate is 1%, the coating still peels off obviously. The underlying mechanism for the evolution of corrosion resistance and compression performance was discussed.

Rare-earth ion-doped crystals are of great interest for quantum memories, a central component in future quantum repeaters. To assess the promise of 1 $\%$ Tm ^3+ -doped yttrium gallium garnet (Tm:YGG), we report measurements of optical coherence and energy-level lifetimes of its ^3 H $_6~\leftrightarrow~^3$ H _4 transition at a temperature of around 500 mK and various magnetic fields. Using spectral hole burning (SHB), we find hyperfine ground-level (Zeeman level) lifetimes of several minutes at magnetic fields of less than 1000 G. We also measure coherence time exceeding one millisecond using two-pulse photon echoes. Three-pulse photon echo and SHB measurements reveal that due to spectral diffusion, the effective coherence time reduces to a few µ s over a timescale of around two hundred seconds. Finally, temporal and frequency-multiplexed storage of optical pulses using the atomic frequency comb protocol is demonstrated. Our results suggest Tm:YGG to be promising for multiplexed photonic quantum memory for quantum repeaters.

This study examined the impact of solution heat treatment on the microstructure, mechanical characteristics, thermophysical properties, and electrical resistivity of an Al-Ni-Mn near-eutectic alloy. The investigation focused on varying temperatures and holding periods. The composition of the Al-Ni-Mn near-eutectic alloy system was chosen as Al-5.3%Ni-1.0%Mn (wt). In the non-heat-treated sample, the matrix phase (α-Al) is in equilibrium with the intermetallic Al _9 (Mn,Ni) _2 and Al _3 Ni phases. The hardness value of the non-heat-treated sample (49.8 kg mm ^−2 ) increased to 70.1 kg mm ^−2 with 2 h of solution heat treatment at 570 °C and then 8 h of artificial aging at 180 °C. The hardness value increased by approximately 41%. T _E : 651.81 °C for the non-heat-treated sample and T _E :648.79 °C for the heat-treated sample. Fusion enthalpy (Δ H) value was determined as 336.79 (J g ^−1 ) for the non-heat-treated sample and 516.36 (J g ^−1 ) for the heat-treated sample. Heat Capacity (Cpl) value was found to be 0.364 J g ^−1 .K for the non-heat-treated sample and 0.560 J g ^−1 .K for the heat-treated sample. The electrical resistivity value of the 2 h’ solution heat-treated sample at 600 °C reached its highest value.

Nanotechnology focuses on materials at the molecular and atomic levels, with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 100 nm. This study explores the synthesis and characterization of copper oxide (CuO), nickel oxide (NiO), and hybrid nanoparticles using an aqueous seed extract from Myristica fragrans . The nanomaterials underwent comprehensive characterization employing various techniques: UV analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, TGA, EDX and SEM. We explored their biological applications through antioxidant and antibacterial assays. UV analysis determined the optical absorption spectra values for CuO, NiO and hybrid nanoparticles. FTIR analysis confirmed functional groups in the plant extract responsible for capping and reducing the reaction medium. XRD and SEM analysis demonstrated the crystalline nature and morphology of the nanoparticles. CuO nanoparticles exhibited polyhedral morphology, while NiO nanoparticles were primarily spherical with some agglomeration. The CuO-NiO hybrid nanoparticles showed a wurtzite morphology with significant agglomeration and larger mean size than CuO and NiO nanoparticles. EDX indicated higher quantities of Cu and Ni. XRD spectra revealed the average particle sizes of nanoparticles. TGA indicated the thermal stability of the nanoparticles, with hybrid nanoparticles being the most stable. The nanoparticles exhibited excellent antioxidant activity, with hybrid nanoparticles showing the highest values in measuring total antioxidant capacity, total reducing power (TRP), ABTS assay, and DPPH-free radical scavenging assay at 400 μ g/mg. Antibacterial assays against multidrug-resistant bacterial strains demonstrated that antibiotics-coated hybrid nanoparticles exhibited potent antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa . In conclusion, CuO, NiO, and CuO-NiO hybrid nanoparticles mediated by Myristica fragrans showcase promising characteristics for various applications, especially in biomedical and clinical settings. The nanoparticles eco-friendly synthesis and biocompatible nature make them attractive candidates for future research and development.

Physical exercise enhances heat generation in human skin and subcutaneous tissues causing thermal stress. This thermal stress causes discomfort in the human body and deteriorates the physical performance of the human subjects. Appropriate choice of cloth for outer covering of human body is necessary to prevent this to provide comfort during the thermal stress. A mathematical model is proposed in this study to analyze the thermal stresses in human skin and subcutaneous tissues covered with various different cloth fabrics. The model considers four compartments namely cloth, epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissues. The bioheat equation along with appropriate boundary condition is employed in this model for one dimensional unsteady state case. The numerical simulation is performed using forward and central finite difference formulas. The findings have been utilized to examine how different types of fabric impact thermal stress experienced by the layers of human skin during physical activity. The polyester is found to be superior in comparison to cotton fabric as it shows less thermal stress and thus can be concluded to be more comfortable as a dress material.

Introduction . Owing to the increasing use of organic dyes, the biosynthesis of metal oxide nanocatalysts is urgently needed as an economical and environmentally friendly solution to reduce their waste release. Method . In this study, we synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) by the sol–gel method using Croton macrostachyus leaf extracts as capping and reducing agents. The biosynthesized CuO catalysts were characterized using x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Result . The result showed that the synthesized CuO NPs had a crystallite size of about 9 nm and had good crystalline texture. Furthermore, the catalyst showed the best catalytic reduction performance in 1 min for methylene blue (MB) and 3 min for methyl orange (MO). Furthermore, the CuO catalyst synthesized using Croton macrostachyus leaf extract resulted in apparent rate constant (K _app ) values for MB and MO of 0.06793 s ^−1 and 0.01877 s ^−1 , respectively. Discussion . The recyclability of the CuO catalyst was investigated, and it was shown that the catalysts are suitable for reuse in dye reduction. Therefore, the catalytic activity of this study suggests that the CuO nanocatalysts prepared in this work are a potential candidate for controlling organic pollutants or trace amounts of naturally occurring active organic chemicals in all environmental dye wastes.

Molecular dynamics and mass transportation in porous structures provide a basis for us to understand catalysis, energy storage and generation, and biological processes in porous confinements. While conventional methods extract macroscopic information in an ensemble-averaged manner, we intend to follow the journey of individual particles and molecules in porous structures relevant to cigarette filters by tracking the single-object dynamics in real space and real time. Nanoparticles of various sizes are embedded in fibrous frameworks of agarose where small particles (50 nm) can explore pores and their connections, locally mapping out the porous structure, middle-sized particles (100 nm) are trapped in single pores to fluctuate within, and large particles (500 nm) are fully immobilized by surrounding fibers. This model system is relevant to the retention and filtration of tar particles or other kinds of particulate matters by fibrous cellulose frequently used in cigarette filters. A molecular tracer is loaded to zeolite-based porous structures, where the majority are fixated in space by adsorption or micropore trapping, exhibiting localized trajectories within a 10-nm radius, and the minority are mobile to scout macropores. This molecular system may elucidate on how aromatic molecules like PAHs are adsorbed and transported in a matrix of mixed micro-, meso-, and macropores.

This paper established a fatigue fracture phase-field model (PFM) to evaluate fatigue damage evolution and crack propagation in oil and gas pipeline. To address inaccuracies in damage evolution, a threshold of the elastic-plastic fracture energy was introduced in the proposed PFM. Using the finite element method, the PFM was applied to simulate fatigue crack growth. Results from compact tension (CT) specimen of the X56 gas pipeline steel demonstrated that the d a /d N -Δ K curve from the current PFM, accounting for plasticity, aligned more closely with experimental results than the elastic PFM. The fatigue crack propagation and fatigue life of the X80 gas pipeline with different defects of the same depth were also analyzed. The results indicated that triangular defects significantly impacted the fatigue life of the X80 gas pipeline. Finally, a model of X60 pipeline with various initial defects was developed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed PFM for full-scale pipeline fatigue fracture by comparing it to experimental a - N curves. The simulation results indicated that the distance and angle between two initial defects in the pipeline significantly influenced the propagation of fatigue cracks and the pipeline’s service life. These findings of this paper can serve as a reference for estimating the service life of gas and oil pipelines.

V-N microalloying treatment is an important way to improve the service performance of non-quenched and tempered ship plate steel. Herein, the influence of V(C, N) on the evolution of microstructure and improvement of mechanical properties was studied. In addition, the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of V-N microalloyed high strength ship plate steel was revealed. The results showed that the composite addition of V and N not only formed a fine dispersed precipitated phase, but more importantly, significantly refined the ferrite/pearlite microstructure, promoted the formation of intragranular acicular ferrite, increased the proportion of high angle grain boundaries, and decreased the kernel average misorientation value. The optimization of microstructure brought about by V-N microalloying achieved synchronous improvement of strength and cryogenic toughness. The impact energy of V-N microalloying ship plate steel increased from 97 J of V-N-free ship plate steel to 239 J at −40 °C, and the impact fracture mode changed from brittle quasi-cleavage fracture to microvoid coalescence fracture with a large number of equiaxial dimples.
