Search

Designing materials with advanced functionalities is the main focus of contemporary solid-state physics and chemistry. Research efforts worldwide are funneled into a few high-end goals, one of the oldest, and most fascinating of which is the search for an ambient temperature superconductor (A-SC). The reason is clear: superconductivity at ambient conditions implies being able to handle, measure and access a single, coherent, macroscopic quantum mechanical state without the limitations associated with cryogenics and pressurization. This would not only open exciting avenues for fundamental research, but also pave the road for a wide range of technological applications, affecting strategic areas such as energy conservation and climate change. In this roadmap we have collected contributions from many of the main actors working on superconductivity, and asked them to share their personal viewpoint on the field. The hope is that this article will serve not only as an instantaneous picture of the status of research, but also as a true roadmap defining the main long-term theoretical and experimental challenges that lie ahead. Interestingly, although the current research in superconductor design is dominated by conventional (phonon-mediated) superconductors, there seems to be a widespread consensus that achieving A-SC may require different pairing mechanisms. We have used density-functional-theory methods and the ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS) approach to predict stable structures and stoichiometries of mixtures of iron and oxygen at high pressures. Searching was performed for 12 different stoichiometries at pressures of 100, 350 and 500 GPa, which involved relaxing more than 32 000 structures. We find that Fe2O3 and FeO2 are the only phases stable to decomposition at 100 GPa, while at 350 and 500 GPa several stoichiometries are found to be stable or very nearly stable. We report a new structure of Fe2O3 with P2(1)2(1)2(1)2 symmetry which is found to be more stable than the known Rh2O3(II) phase at pressures above  ∼233 GPa. We also report two new structures of FeO, with Pnma and R3m symmetries, which are found to be stable within the ranges 195-285 GPa and 285-500 GPa, respectively, and two new structures of Fe3O4 with Pca21 and P21/c symmetries, which are found to be stable within the ranges 100-340 GPa and 340-500 GPa, respectively. Finally, we report two new structures of Fe4O5 with P42/n and [Formula: see text] symmetries, which are found to be stable within the ranges 100-231 GPa and 231-500 GPa, respectively. Our new structures of Fe3O4 and Fe4O5 are found to have lower enthalpies than their known structures within their respective stable pressure ranges.

First-principles calculations have been employed to examine the possible use of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) as a tool for determining the presence of OH groups and hence hydrogen content in compounds. Our density functional theory (DFT) based calculations describe accurately the experimental EELS results for forsterite (Mg2SiO4), hambergite (Be2BO3(OH)), brucite (Mg(OH)2) and diaspore (α-AlOOH). DFT calculations were complemented by an experimental time resolved study of the oxygen K-edge in diaspore. The results show unambiguously that there is no connection between a pre-edge feature in the oxygen K-edge spectrum of diaspore and the presence of OH groups in the structure. Instead, the experimental study shows that the pre-edge feature in diaspore is transient. It can be explained by the presence of molecular O2, which is produced as a result of the electron irradiation.

A combination of state-of-the-art theoretical methods has been used to obtain an atomic-level picture of classical and quantum ordering of protons in cold high-pressure solid hydrogen. We focus mostly on phases II and III of hydrogen, exploring the effects of quantum nuclear motion on certain features of these phases (through a number of ab initio path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations at particular points on the phase diagram). We also examine the importance of van der Waals forces in this system by performing calculations using the optB88-vdW density functional, which accounts for non-local correlations. Our calculations reveal that the transition between phases I and II is strongly quantum in nature, resulting from a competition between anisotropic inter-molecular interactions that restrict molecular rotation and thermal plus quantum fluctuations of the nuclear positions that facilitate it. The transition from phase II to III is more classical because quantum nuclear motion plays only a secondary role and the transition is determined primarily by the underlying potential energy surface. A structure of P2(1)/c symmetry with 24 atoms in the primitive unit cell is found to be stable when anharmonic quantum nuclear vibrational motion is included at finite temperatures using the PIMD method. This structure gives a good account of the infra-red and Raman vibron frequencies of phase II. We find additional support for a C2/c structure as a strong candidate for phase III, since it remains transparent up to 300 GPa, even when quantum nuclear effects are included. Finally, we find that accounting for van der Waals forces improves the agreement between experiment and theory for the parts of the phase diagram considered, when compared to previous work which employed the widely-used Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional.

It is essential to know the arrangement of the atoms in a material in order to compute and understand its properties. Searching for stable structures of materials using first-principles electronic structure methods, such as density-functional-theory (DFT), is a rapidly growing field. Here we describe our simple, elegant and powerful approach to searching for structures with DFT, which we call ab initio random structure searching (AIRSS). Applications to discovering the structures of solids, point defects, surfaces, and clusters are reviewed. New results for iron clusters on graphene, silicon clusters, polymeric nitrogen, hydrogen-rich lithium hydrides, and boron are presented.

We have used density-functional-theory methods to study phases of iron at terapascal (TPa) pressures. Hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) iron is stable from below 0.1 TPa to multi-TPa pressures, where we find a window of 7-21 TPa in which the face-centred-cubic (fcc) phase is slightly more stable. At 34 TPa we find a transition to a body-centred-tetragonal (bct) phase, which is a small distortion of the body-centred-cubic (bcc) structure. The bcc phase also becomes more stable than the hcp above 35 TPa. The bct and bcc phases become considerably more stable than hcp and fcc at even higher pressures, and we expect this result to hold at high temperatures.

A plane wave based method for the calculation of core-level spectra is presented. We provide details of the implementation of the method in the pseudopotential density functional code CASTEP, including technical issues concerning the calculations, and discuss the applicability and accuracy of the method. A number of examples are provided for comparing the results to both experiment and other density functional theory techniques.

Spectral features, chemical shifts, and absolute thresholds of electron energy loss near-edge structure (ELNES) and x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) for selected compounds, i.e. TiO(2) (rutile), TiO(2) (anatase), SrTiO(3), Ti(2)O(3), Al(2)O(3), AlN and β-Ga(2)O(3), were calculated by a plane wave pseudopotential method. Experimental ELNES/XANES of those compounds were well reproduced when an excited pseudopotential, which includes a core hole, was used. In addition to the spectral features, it was found that chemical shifts among different compounds were also reproduced by correcting the contribution of the excited pseudopotentials to the energy of the core orbital.
