2. Chronic Ankle Instability In the Swiss Orienteering National Team.

Abstract

Background: Acute ankle sprains (AAS) are the most frequent injuries in sports orthopaedics. Up to 40% of the patients with AAS develop chronic ankle instability (CAI) either as a mechanical (MAI) or functional ankle instability (FAI). Hypotheses: Orienteering is a high-risk sport for AAS and CAI. Within CAI, MAI and FAI may appear as single or combined entity. In professional athletes, high functional ankle stability may compensate MAI. Methods: 43 athletes of the Swiss Orienteering National Team (women, 20; men, 23) were examined clinically, and biomechanically with the Biodex Balance System (BBS). Results: The history of AAS was documented in 37 athletes (86%). Clinical and biomechanical examination showed that 37 ankles (43%) were stable, 49 (57%) evidenced CAI. The CAI subgroups were: (A) MAI with normal functional stability, 25 (29%); (B) FAI with normal mechanical stability, 18 (21%); and (C) combination of MAI and FAI, 6 (7%). Discussion: An orienteering athlete has high risk for AAS and the development of CAI. CAI exhibits three different subgroups: MAI alone, FAI alone, combination of MAI and FAI. In order to compensate MAI, and therefore long-term joint sequelae, specific training for improvement of functional ankle stability is advised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3. Fatigue and Perception de l'effort pendant une course d'orientation.

Abstract

We tried to analyse the effort during an orienteering race by working on the objective and objective perception of the effort made by the runner before during and after a race. This experiment was supervised by 12 highly skilled orienteers. The runners were given an electrocardiogram during an orienteering race and during a stand test before and after the race. The electrocardiogram data were analysed thanks too techniques linear (Pburg, F.F.T.), no-linear (Poincarré), and time-frequency (Morlet wavelet). Interviews focused on the progress of the race were achieved to get information in order to correlate with the electrocardiogram recordings. Statistics on stand tests were achieved as well as the study of correlations between the different variables of electrocardiogram and the observable were looked for too. We tried to throw light on the spectrogram from the observables thanks to the interviews and Morlet wavelet too. We notice many changes after the effort in comparison to the variables of rest before the effort. We can also observe a psychological influence on the energy High Frequency and a physiological difference on the energy Low Frequency. The Low Frequency would be a reliable marker of the cognitive effort put in the task during the orienteering race. These results could help us manage the effort in a finer way working with the athletes in order to put in place a system of help which will improve the diagnosis of the orienteer. 4. Beginners' Perspectives of Getting Involved in Orienteering in Greece.

Abstract

Orienteering has only recently been introduced as a sport in Greece, and it is not known what motivates people to decide to participate in a previously unknown and rather complex sport. The present study looks at the first ever experience of the sport of 355 participants. Participant observation and questionnaire were used as methodological tools. Male participants constituted 61.7% of the sample (N=219) with female participants 38.3% (N=135). The vast majority (83.5%) were between 19 and 44 years old. Analysis of the participants' responses showed that the main reasons for taking part in orienteering events are curiosity/desire for a new experience, love of forests and nature in general, love of sports, walking and exercising in a natural environment, social reasons, to learn a new multidimensional sport, to acquire compass and map-reading skills, the sense of adventure or nature exploration, and recreation. The main sources of satisfaction for the participants include the natural beauty of the course locations, the sense of adventure and challenge of being in an unknown area, the excitement involved in the discovery of control points, learning orientation using map and compass, running and walking in difficult forested areas, cooperation with friends and co-athletes, and finally the multi-dimensional nature of the sport. The main sources of dissatisfaction include the following: tiring ascents on rough areas, inaccurate maps, and poor weather conditions. In addition in some events the feeling of exasperation due to the time limitation (score events). Problems resulting from poor management, inadequate information, and the location of some events in the burnt forest outside the city were also sources of dissatisfaction. The lack of experience of many beginners leads to difficulties in using a compass, poor understanding of the rules orienteering and difficulty selecting an appropriate course. Others mentioned dislike of certain plants or animals they came in contact with. In general the results of this study showed that participants in Greece are very satisfied with the sport and therefore further efforts to promote the sport would appear worthwhile. Abstract

The article discusses the potential of orienteering as a television (TV) sport. Orienteering becomes more visible on TV as in the case in Czech Republic where viewers rate the sport as equal to basketball. Producer Karel Jonak says that orienteering has a potential as a TV sport by using GPS tracking and other technologies as they can create a unique and attractive mixture for the audience. He emphasizes the need to have an all year TV production model to keep the sport at people's minds.
