The article presents the study which determined the community structure and environmental relationships in pelagic marine mammals at huge spatial scales. It examines how identifying sightings at sea to various taxonomic levels impacts the structure of the pelagic communities. The study was conducted in three biogeographic zones in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean from Nova Scotia through the Gulf of Mexico. Sightings data were from the Ocean Biogeographic Information System -Spatial Ecological Analysis of Megavertebrate Populations (OBIS-SEAMAP) project.
