This paper aims to describe the concept of cultural m emory the Jan and Aleida Assmann in dialogue with Iuri Lotman. A point in the discussion of the concepts of Assmann are the continuities and discontinuities of "cultural memory" and "social memory". If it is clear that cultural memory is not related only to the individual, as if it were an internal memory, can not speak the same of your progress in relation to social memory. Therefore, the first part of the work will follow the theoretical script of the Assmann describing the collectivity of individual memory, going by what they call communicative memory and bonding memory. Next, we present the concept of culture in the works of Lotman, which to some extent helped in the formulation of Assmann. The Approaches and conceptual features of these authors will help in the understanding of the concept "memory" for reading sacred texts.
