The dynamic behaviour of the ion and electron energy, particle and momentum transport measured during type-I edge localized mode (ELM) cycles at ASDEX Upgrade is presented. Fast measurements of the ion and electron temperature profiles revelead that the ion and electron energy transport recover on different timescales, with the electrons recovering on a slower timescale (Cavedon et al 2017 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 59 105007). The dominant mechanism for the additional energy transport in the electron channel that could cause the delay in the electron temperature gradient (∇Te) recovery is attributed to the depletion of energy caused by the ELM. The local sources and sinks for the electron channel in the steep gradient region are much smaller compared to the energy flux arriving from the pedestal top, indicating that the core plasma may dictate the local dynamics of the ∇Te recovery during the ELM cycle. A model for the edge momentum transport based on toroidal torque balance that takes into account the existence of poloidal impurity asymmetries has been developed. The analysis of the profile evolution during the ELM cycle shows that the model captures the dynamics of the rotation both before the ELM crash and during the recovery phase.

Understanding the dependence of the H-mode power threshold, PLH on the main ion composition is crucial for H-mode operation in ITER. In this work, H-mode power threshold studies conducted at ASDEX Upgrade are presented. These were performed in hydrogen plasmas with helium doping and in mixed hydrogen-deuterium plasmas. PLH stays constant on the level of pure hydrogen in hydrogen plasmas with helium doping up to cHe = 20%. Power balance calculations with the transport code ASTRA show that the edge ion heat flux at the L-H transition is independent of helium concentration and applied auxiliary heating, supporting that a critical edge ion heat flux is needed to enter H-mode. A non-linear dependence of PLH on the relative hydrogen content is found. PLH and the edge ion heat flux are constant at the level of pure deuterium for between 0 and 0.5 and constant on the level of pure hydrogen for between 0.8 and 1.

The shape of the experimental boron density profile that appears in our paper (figures 2, 3(a) and 12) is incorrect. As a result, the comparisons to the theoretical results presented in section 4 (figures 13 and 15) are also incorrect. The agreement between the experimentally measured and theoretically predicted impurity particle convection is significantly better than was reported in our publication. There were two errors that contributed to the incorrect boron density profile. The first was an error in the absolute intensity calibration of the charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) diagnostic used for the analysis [1]. This error was corrected by cross-calibrating to a second system [2] and by using the post-campaign (opposed to the pre-campaign) absolute-intensity calibration measurements. The second error was in the implementation of the ‘COLRAD’ package within the CHICA code [3] that was used to calculate the neutral density populations. The error resulted in incorrect distributions of halo neutrals, which lead to artificially hollow density profiles. This implementation error has since been corrected. Please note that these errors do not affect any other publication. In particular, the authors would like to stress that the impurity density profiles used in previous transport studies [4–7] do not suffer from either of these errors as they were calculated using data from the NBI I CXRS system only [2] and using the ‘FIDASIM’ code rather than ‘COLRAD’ for the neutral distributions. The presence of helium is fundamentally connected to the performance of a fusion reactor, as fusion-produced helium is expected to heat the plasma bulk, while He 'ash' accumulation dilutes the fusion fuel. An understanding of helium transport via experimentally validated theoretical models of the low-Z impurity turbulent transport is indispensable to predict the helium density profile in future fusion devices. At ASDEX Upgrade, detailed, multi-species investigations of low-Z impurity transport have been undertaken in dedicated experiments, resulting in an extensive database of helium and boron density profiles over a wide range of parameters relevant for turbulent transport (normalised gradients of the electron density, the ion temperature, and the toroidal rotation profiles, the collisionality and the electron to ion temperature ratio). Helium is not found to accumulate in the parameter space investigated, as the shape of the helium density profile follows largely that of the electron density. Helium is observed to be as peaked as the electron density at high electron cyclotron resonance heating fraction, and less peaked than the electron density at high neutral beam heating fraction. The boron density profile is found to be consistently less peaked than the electron density profile. Detailed comparisons of the experimental density gradients of both impurities with quasilinear gyrokinetic simulations have shown that a qualitative agreement between experiment and theory cannot always be obtained, with strong discrepancies observed in some cases.

At ASDEX upgrade (AUG) a new framework for the evaluation of impurity densities based on measurements from charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) diagnostics has been developed. The charge exchange impurity concentration analysis code, or CHICA, can perform these calculations for all of the beam-based CXRS diagnostics at AUG and is equipped with the atomic data for all of the regularly measured charge exchange spectral lines (He, Li, B, C, N, O, and Ne). CHICA includes four different methods for the evaluation of the neutral density populations, which feature different implementations and contain varying levels of sophistication. These methods have been thoroughly benchmarked against one another, enabling the important processes for the evaluation of neutral densities to be identified as well as the neutral populations that are most critical to the accurate interpretation of the measured CXRS intensities. For the AUG neutral beams, charge exchange with the ground state of the first energy component is typically the dominant contribution to the measured CXRS intensities, but emission from reactions with the n = 2 beam halo population can contribute up to 35% to the total signal and must be included in the analysis. Neglect of this population leads to incorrect magnitudes and incorrect profile shapes of the calculated impurity density profiles. The edge lines of sight (LOS) of the core CXRS diagnostics at AUG intersect the edge pedestal inside of the neutral beam volume. Therefore, the impurity density is not constant along the LOS, complicating the interpretation of the measured intensities. Within CHICA a forward model for the edge impurity densities has been implemented, enabling the reconstruction of accurate edge profiles.

The edge ion heat transport is analyzed in ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) by combining a comprehensive set of pedestal measurements with both interpretive and predictive modelling. The experimentally determined ion heat diffusivities, Xi, are compared with neoclassical theory and the impact of edge localized modes (ELMs) on the edge ion heat transport level is studied in detail. Pedestal matching experiments in deuterium and hydrogen plasmas show that the inter-ELM pedestal Xi remains close to the neoclassical value. The additional power needed in hydrogen to get similar pedestal temperatures as in deuterium plasmas mostly affects the electron heat channel, i.e. the electron heat diffusivity increases while the ion heat diffusivity stays at the same level within the uncertainties. Sub-ms measurements of the edge ion temperature allows us to extend the analysis to the entire ELM cycle. During the ELM crash, the ion heat transport is increased by an order of magnitude. The perturbed heat flux increases first at the separatrix, i.e. first the separatrix ion temperature increases, leading to a flatter ion temperature gradient, followed by a decrease of the whole pedestal profile. The ion heat transport returns to its pre-ELM neoclassical level 34 ms after the ELM crash.

The analysis of the charge exchange measurements of helium is hindered by an additional emission contributing to the spectra, the helium 'plume' emission (Fonck et al 1984 Phys. Rev. A 29 3288), which complicates the interpretation of the measurements. The plume emission is indistinguishable from the active charge exchange signal when standard analysis of the spectra is applied and its intensity is of comparable magnitude for ASDEX Upgrade conditions, leading to a significant overestimation of the He2+ densities if not properly treated. Furthermore, the spectral line shape of the plume emission is non-Gaussian and leads to wrong ion temperature and flow measurements when not taken into account. A kinetic model for the helium plume emission has been developed for ASDEX Upgrade. The model is benchmarked against experimental measurements and is shown to capture the underlying physics mechanisms of the plume effect, as it can reproduce the experimental spectra and provides consistent values for the ion temperature, plasma rotation, and He2+ density.

The interaction of externally applied small non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbations (MP) with tokamak high-confinement mode (H-mode) plasmas is reviewed and illustrated by recent experiments in ASDEX Upgrade. The plasma response to the vacuum MP field is amplified by stable ideal kink modes with low toroidal mode number n driven by the H-mode edge pressure gradient (and associated bootstrap current) which is experimentally evidenced by an observable shift of the poloidal mode number m away from field alignment (m = qn, with q being the safety factor) at the response maximum. A torque scan experiment demonstrates the importance of the perpendicular electron flow for shielding of the resonant magnetic perturbation, as expected from a two-fluid MHD picture. Two significant effects of MP occur in H-mode plasmas at low pedestal collisionality, : (a) a reduction of the global plasma density by up to and (b) a reduction of the energy loss associated with edge localised modes (ELMs) by a factor of up to 9. A comprehensive database of ELM mitigation pulses at low in ASDEX Upgrade shows that the degree of ELM mitigation correlates with the reduction of pedestal pressure which in turn is limited and defined by the onset of ELMs, i. e. a modification of the ELM stability limit by the magnetic perturbation.

Results of experimental scans of heating power, plasma shape, and nitrogen content are presented, with a focus on global performance and pedestal alteration. In detailed scans at low triangularity, it is shown that the increase in stored energy due to nitrogen seeding stems from the pedestal. It is also shown that the confinement increase is driven through the temperature pedestal at the three heating power levels studied. In a triangularity scan, an orthogonal effect of shaping and seeding is observed, where increased plasma triangularity increases the pedestal density, while impurity seeding (carbon and nitrogen) increases the pedestal temperature in addition to this effect. Modelling of these effects was also undertaken, with interpretive and predictive models being employed. The interpretive analysis shows a general agreement of the experimental pedestals in separate power, shaping, and seeding scans with peeling-ballooning theory. Predictive analysis was used to isolate the individual effects, showing that the trends of additional heating power and increased triangularity can be recoverd. However, a simple change of the effective charge in the plasma cannot explain the observed levels of confinement improvement in the present models.

The Type I ELM behavior in ASDEX Upgrade with full W plasma facing components is studied in terms of time scales and energy losses for a large set of shots characterized by similar operational parameters but different nitrogen seeding rate and input power. ELMs with no nitrogen can have two typical behaviors, that can be classified depending on their duration, the long and the short ELMs. The work shows that both short and long ELMs have a similar first phase, but the long ELMs are characterized by a second phase with further energy losses. The second phase disappears when nitrogen is seeded with a flux rate above 1022 (e s-1). The phenomenon is compatible with a threshold effect. The presence of the second phase is related to a high divertor/scrape-off layer (SOL) temperature and/or to a low pedestal temperature. The ELM energy losses of the two phases are regulated by different mechanisms. The energy losses of the first phase increase with nitrogen which, in turn, produce the increase of the pedestal temperature. So the energy losses of the first phase are regulated by the pedestal top parameters and the increase with nitrogen is due to the decreasing pedestal collisionality. The energy losses of the second phase are related to the divertor/SOL conditions. The long ELMs energy losses increase with increasing divertor temperature and with the number of the expelled filaments. In terms of the power lost by the plasma, the nitrogen seeding increases the power losses of the short ELMs. The long ELMs have a first phase with power losses comparable to the short ELMs losses. Assuming no major difference in the wetted area, these results suggest that (i) the nitrogen might increase the divertor heat fluxes during the short ELMs and that (ii) the long ELMs, despite the longer time scale, are not beneficial in terms of divertor heat loads.

In ASDEX Upgrade (AUG), the normalised gyroradius p∗ was varied via a hydrogen isotope scan while keeping other dimensionless parameters constant. This was done in L-mode, to minimise the impact of pedestal stability on confinement. Power balance and perturbative transport analyses reveal that the electron heat transport is unaffected by the differences in isotope mass. Nonlinear simulations with the Gene code suggest that these L-mode discharges are ion temperature gradient (ITG) dominated. The different gyroradii due to the isotope mass do not necessarily result in a change of the predicted heat fluxes. This result is used in simulations with the Astra transport code to match the experimental profiles. In these simulations the experimental profiles and confinement times are reproduced with the same transport coefficients for hydrogen and deuterium plasmas. The mass only enters in the energy exchange term between electrons and ions. These numerical observations are supported by additional experiments which show a lower ion energy confinement compared to that of the electrons. Additionally, hydrogen and deuterium plasmas have a similar confinement when the energy exchange time between electrons and ions is matched. This strongly suggests that the observed isotope dependence in L-mode is not dominated by a gyroradius effect, but a consequence of the mass dependence in the collisional energy exchange between electrons and ions.

Previous work carried out in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak on the role of the edge radial electric field and ion heat flux in the L-H transition physics in deuterium plasmas has been extended in hydrogen plasmas. Similar discharges were performed in the two gases providing a detailed comparison of the edge kinetic profiles and heat fluxes in L-mode up to the L-H transition, as the heating power is increased. At the L-H transition, the edge ion heat flux just inside the separatrix is about two times higher in hydrogen than in deuterium. However, the ion plasma parameters at the plasma edge, T i and , as well as the radial electric field well, are found to be very similar in the two gases. The transport analysis based on this data reveals that, at the L-H transition, the ion heat transport at the plasma edge is about two times higher in hydrogen than in deuterium, in agreement with the well-known isotope effect of confinement and transport. This indicates that the higher power threshold in hydrogen is mainly due to the higher ion heat transport in this gas.

The poloidal and toroidal impurity flows in the edge transport barrier of H-mode plasmas have been studied over a wide range of pedestal top ion collisionalities. A comparison of the edge poloidal rotation measurements to neoclassical predictions shows good agreement in all cases. The measured edge impurity toroidal rotation is observed to change sign from co-current to counter-current with decreasing collisionality. The switch occurs at the same collisionality at which neoclassical theory predicts the main ion poloidal rotation to change from the electron to the ion diamagnetic direction. The behaviour of these two species, when used to calculate the main ion toroidal rotation via the radial force balance equation, leads to fairly constant co-current main ion toroidal rotation. Hence, at low collisionality, due to a reduced frictional coupling, the main ion-impurity differential rotation can be quite large. The behaviour of impurity ion flows on a flux surface has also been investigated in detail and it was found that the measurements are consistent with the continuity equation only if the poloidally asymmetric impurity density distribution is taken into account. The asymmetry is found to be the result of the interplay of all forces in the parallel momentum balance, with the friction force providing the dominant drive. Close to the separatrix the poloidal centrifugal force, which is usually neglected, also gives an additional contribution to the impurity density asymmetry. Within the experimental uncertainties the ion temperature and the electrostatic potential are simultaneous flux functions, despite the presence of a poloidally asymmetric impurity density profile.
