An optimal formulation of silica defoamers used to control foaming in the Kraft process of papermaking was developed using a nonlinear programming model for optimal performance. The model was developed based on empirical equations of defoamer performance and on a deterministic equation of ingredient cost. The effectiveness of the defoamer produced using the computer-generated formulation was proven in tests conducted in five paper plants.

Papers on operations research/management science should balance theory and practice to create a comprehensive epistemology for the field. Theory alone cannot fully address the issues inherent in operations research/management science while practice without theoretical basis is futile. Proper balance between theory and practice can be achieved by combining literature, personal experience and testimony from experienced practitioners, an approach that promises to improve operations and management.

A paper on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) suggested that the AHP is an arbitrary process. However, a discussion is presented to respond to this charge which suggests that the AHP is a practicable theory built on ratio scales, and that the AHP does not need to be watered down to satisfy those researchers who analyze theories based on interval scales. Specifically, it is suggested that just because the AHP doe not follow the axioms and outcomes of utility theory does not mean the AHP is arbitrary.
