Using enhanced menus, BobCat now offers more ways to search for materials plus direct connections to other databases loaded both locally and remotely. For many of these databases, searchers will be able to utilize BobCat's search protocols rather than learn different query methods for every database. In the future, BobCat will serve as a portal to text, numeric, image, and sound databases available over the Internet and elsewhere. The article reports that Geac Computers Inc. has signed an agreement with the State University of New York at Albany, New York, (SUNY/Albany) to provide its ADVANCE integrated library system to the University's libraries. SUNY/Albany is planning a new electronic library, and will begin construction in 1995. The University will use the ADVANCE System as the central server for electronic delivery of information throughout the campus. Evolving with Geac's development of client/server technology, the SUNY/Albany system will put more power into the hands of its users through intelligent workstations which provide access to an increasing number of databases, applications, and networks. In an unusual procurement process, SUNY/Albany opted to unbundle the hardware and software and purchase a hardware-only option only after making the decision to acquire the ADVANCE System.
