SCANNING systems ,OPTOELECTRONIC devices ,ELECTRONIC equipment ,DIGITAL libraries ,LIBRARIES - Abstract
The article focuses on the use of scanning systems in digital libraries. Scanning is far from dead. It remains a fundamental skill for digital librarians. The Northeast Document Conservation Center continues to offer a School for Scanning conference to help professionals learn best practices for conversion projects, from start to finish. This hands-on approach is immensely empowering, because it can help you master the details of optical character recognition (OCR), metadata creation and archival-quality digital objects. Indeed, the skills associated with print conversion will remain in demand for some time to come and are the foundation of digital library development know-how. Hewlett Packard's 4670 is a lightweight, flat panel scanner that can be carried into the stacks or even to remote locations. It is simple to use and the OCR software is superlative, producing clear text copies in one scan. It will drop a finished scan directly into Microsoft Word, from which one can create a portable document. For the large-scale scanners among us, there is Fujitsu's ScanSnap FI-5110-EOX, which is a moderately priced but high-powered machine aimed at the records management market. This scanner will copy 50 pages at a time and convert them into searchable Adobe portable document format files, ready for uploading.

This article reports that in October 1994, Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Inc. and its regional network affiliates hosted an international video-conference on the emerging electronic, digital library. The video conference was the result of discussions among network directors, OCLC management, and OCLC member libraries on what could further the professional dialogue that is crucial as the library community moves to the next stage of the electronic library. The event provided an interactive forum for participants at over 700 downlink sites across North America and Europe. The conference was free and open to all who are interested in the future of libraries. In his welcoming address, K. Wayne Smith commented that OCLC and its strategic partners' vision of the electronic library will be fulfilled within a year, and that the next stage will be arriving at warp speed. In his keynote address, Sidney Verba discussed new technology and what it means to libraries. He also conveyed his personal observations on technology. As a scholar he uses technology for research, as a teacher he observes how students use technology, and as a librarian he is studying how technology is changing the library.
