The article discusses legislative proposals of the European Commission (EC) for the 2016 European copyright framework. Topics include online content portability across the border, implementing the Marrakesh Treaty by the European Union (EU) and synchronizing copyrighted materials exceptions. Also mentioned are the EU rate of valued-added tax (VAT) for electronic (e)books, the copyright bill in Nigeria and Academix with materials from Nigerian universities including the University of Calabar.

Abstract

The article offers an update on digital library projects in the U.S. as of November 2013. Particular focus is given to the online service Google Books, digital repository HathiTrust and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). Issues regarding copyright, orphan works, metadata and quality of large-scale digital libraries arising from these projects are examined. Also mentioned is the court case The Authors Guild versus HathiTrust, which focuses on copyright infringement.
