This month, ISI will release two more direct-to-the-desktop alerting services based on highly customized, confidential search profiles. Personal Alert was developed to meet the specific needs of individual researchers. Professional Alert was designed to aid small groups or departments within an organization.

Portable database products are growing faster than online databases. Aside from the media involved, and the method of pricing, there are four obvious differences between online and portable databases: content, type of data, frequency of updating and presentation. The familiar portable database products are the bibliographic databases that libraries have used for years online.

This article provides information on Pro-Cite, a bibliographic database management program. Each Pro-Cite database can hold up to 32,000 standard records. It provides twenty different work forms into which bibliographic information can be entered. The Pro-Cite Version 1.4 supports use of authority lists to help standardize the contents of Pro-Cite database fields. Pro-Cite also offers sophisticated search capabilities. Boolean searching is fully supported and users can combine terms using more than one expression to formulate a specific search.

This extensive new file covers the literature, history, demography, politics, government, regional and international relations, economics, finance, oil, law, science and technology, arms and armaments, education and religion. Of particular value to scholars of Middle Eastern studies, businesses operating in that region, and government agencies, MidEast File offers abstracts of some 10,000 items per year. MidEast File is retrospective to 1979, beginning with approximately 25,000 records. It is updated monthly with about 800 records.

This article presents information on the newly launched Library Master 3.0, a bibliographic database managing system, from its developer Balboa Software. This database management system automatically formats bibliographies, citations, and bibliographic footnotes. Version 3.0 adds automatic footnote and in-text citation formatting, customizable duplicate record detection, global search and replace, advanced sorting, abbreviation tables, and importing from 100 sources and publishing bibliographies on the World Wide Web. Library Master 3.0 automatically formats the footnotes or in-text citations in a book, thesis or article. The system creates annotated and subject bibliographies, periodical literature indexes, catalogs, acquisitions lists, book spine labels and more. Users, suggestively, can pick from dozens of standard bibliographic styles or design their own. Library Master can import references from 100 online information services, CD-ROMs and library catalogs. It is compatible with most Windows and DOS word processors. It automatically creates documents which can be published on the World Wide Web using the Hypertext Markup Language.

The article reports that the PAIS International bibliographic database includes the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). The new tape format is designed to provide data elements in separate fields in order to make index-building easier and consequently to improve search results. The ISSN, while provided as a data element in the separate Periodicals Authority file, the complete listing of periodicals used for PAIS indexing documents, was not provided in the periodical bibliographic entry. Now the bibliographic entries for 94 percent of the PAIS periodical articles includes the ISSN. PAIS expects the provision of the ISSN in the bibliographic entry to prove valuable. It will be easier to order documents identified in the PAIS International database with the ISSN number in the bibliographic entry.

The new protocol resolves all differences between the USMARC format for bibliographic records and the original MicroUF format. By eliminating these differences, the new USMARC MicroLIF Protocol conforms to the USMARC format for bibliographic records while continuing to meet the needs of the microcomputer environment. For the past year, library automation vendors and MicroLIF record suppliers have been exchanging data records to insure compliance with the new USMARC MicroLIF Protocol. The article discusses a question related to the subject of online database quality. The answers of the question have been suggested by various readers of the journal. The question asks about the rating of services related to database quality among users of online services. The later part of the question states that if one believes the quality of some databases need improvement, would they be willing to pay more for database access? Most of the readers chose not to answer the second part of the question concerning higher fees, but of those that did, the majority said they would be willing to pay slightly higher fees. In summary, one can only say that according to the readers, online data bases are like everything else. Some are of high quality some are not. But a very unscientific survey does seem to indicate that there are many high quality databases out there, that the quality is continuing to get better, and that in most cases online searchers are willing to pay more for a better quality product.
