Sexual communication between adolescent partners is an important component of sexual health and wellbeing. Over 40 years of research on adolescent sexual communication has yielded rich information, yet there remain gaps in our understanding of the communication process. The purpose of this scoping review was to synthesize the body of research on adolescent sexual communication to identify how communication has been conceptualized, how researchers have measured communication, and what theoretical frameworks have been applied across the literature. We identified 198 assessments of sexual communication across 119 quantitative studies. This work included 127,489 adolescents (iM/isubage/sub = 15.97) from 15 countries (81.5% U.S.-based). Most studies relied on self-reports (93.4%) and surveyed only one member of a couple (97.5%). The definition of sexual communication was highly varied across the literature: in half of assessments (52.0%) sexual communication was operationalized as a behavior-the verbal or nonverbal exchange of messages about sex-whereas the remaining half of assessments captured social-cognitive aspects of communication (e.g., communication self-efficacy, fear/anxiety). There was also a tendency for investigators to create their own idiosyncratic instruments: half of studies (48.9%) used instruments created by the research team with limited or no discussion of reliability/validity. Regarding the topic of communication, a third of assessments (33.8%) focused exclusively on condom communication and another quarter (24.0%) focused on other safer-sex issues (e.g., STDs, abstinence). Notably absent were studies focused on communication surrounding consent or sexual pleasure. Also absent was a guiding conceptual model or theory that could unify this body of work. Overall, results highlight gaps and inconsistencies in how partner sexual communication has been conceptualized, measured, and theorized about in previous work. We provide several recommendations for future theory-building efforts as well as rigorous, multimethod empirical investigations of adolescent sexual communication that would further our understanding of this important aspect of adolescent sexual wellbeing.

This study examined the empirical link between substance use, and family, school, and contextual factors relevant to emerging adulthood and Mexican-origin emerging adults' sexual risk-taking behavior using a longitudinal design that followed the respondents from adolescence to emerging adulthood (n = 520). Overall, we found that engaging in one high-risk sexual behavior was associated with higher odds of engaging in another. While alcohol and substance use was associated with higher odds of engaging in risky sexual behavior, living with parents, having at least one parent who was a college graduate, sharing a higher level of parental closeness, being more bicultural, starting college, a new school, or classes, and feeling like an adult were associated with lower odds of engaging in sexual risk-taking behavior. Contrary to the study hypothesis, a higher level of family cohesion was associated with higher odds of such behavior. Lastly, male respondents tended to have more than 3 sexual partners but were less likely to not use condoms compared with their female counterparts.

We tested whether CSD500 (Futura Medical; Guildford, UK), a novel condom containing erectogenic gel designed to increase penile firmness, penile size, and erection duration, results in greater sexual pleasure. In 2017-2020, we randomized heterosexual couples in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam to use CSD500 (N = 248) or standard condoms (N = 252) and followed them up for six months. Women completed the Quality of Sexual Experience (QSE) scale; men completed the QSE, Sexual Experience Questionnaire (SEX-Q), and 11 condom acceptability items. Rates of oral contraceptive pill use have declined over the past decade in Australia. While some women use highly effective methods, others rely on less effective methods such as condoms, withdrawal and fertility awareness. We aimed to understand motivations for relying on these methods among young women in Australia. Women aged 18-23 years who reported using less effective methods and participated in the Contraceptive Use, Pregnancy Intention and Decisions (CUPID) study formed the sample for this analysis. Using thematic analysis, we analysed 140 free-text comments. Findings suggest that less effective methods were used when they were assessed as being best suited to current reproductive needs. These methods were perceived as offering benefits that hormonal and more invasive methods did not, and participants were largely satisfied with them. By contrast, some less effective method use was driven by a lack of choice or alternative options, previous bad experiences with hormonal methods, a lack of appropriate information about alternatives and difficulty accessing other methods. It is therefore essential to move beyond 'LARC-first' contraceptive counselling approaches to ensure young women are provided with accurate information regarding all contraceptive options available (including how to negotiate their use) and how to use them to their greatest efficacy.

Sugar dating is a form of dating typically characterized by wealthier, older men providing financial support to younger, less financially secure women in exchange for companionship and sexual intimacy. The goals of the current study were to (1) quantitatively assess the sexual practices of sugar dating women in their arrangements with sugar daddies, including time spent on sexual activity, average number of current partners, and relative perceptions of relationship power, (2) examine how perceptions of power within arrangements relate to condom use with sugar daddies, and (3) compare samples of sugar dating and non-sugar dating women on both condom use consistency by partner type and rates of STI testing and diagnoses. Overall, condom use for all women was highest with casual sexual partners and lowest with romantic partners, with sugar dating women's condom use with sugar daddies in between. Consistent with social exchange theory, perception of power within sugar dating arrangements predicted condom use with sugar daddies, such that women who felt they held more power reported more consistent condom use. Further, sugar dating women were twice as likely to have been diagnosed with an STI but were more than six times as likely to have been tested for STIs.

Youth at-risk for HIV are also at-risk for mental health disorders and psychiatric hospitalization. Understanding the association between engagement in HIV prevention, concurrent risk behaviors, and psychiatric hospitalization may lead to improvements in integrated prevention and mental health treatment efforts. Youth at-risk for HIV, aged 14-24 years old, predominantly Black/African American and Latinx (75%) were recruited through youth-serving clinics and community sites in Los Angeles (n = 839) and New Orleans (n = 647). We compared youth with and without histories of psychiatric hospitalization on engagement in HIV prevention, concurrent risk behaviors, and demographic characteristics. We examined predictors of hospitalization using multiple imputations for missing data. Hospitalized youth (30%) were more involved in HIV programs, but were less likely to use PrEP/PEP or condoms than non-hospitalized youth. The odds of hospitalization were higher for transgender/gender nonconforming youth relative to cisgender youth; the OR was increased after adjustment for concurrent risk behaviors. Hospitalization was associated with homelessness, trauma, incarceration, substance use, and involvement in substance abuse treatment programs. There is a continuing need to integrate the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders into HIV prevention programs to better address multiple challenges faced by vulnerable youth.

In the context of China's gender imbalance, this study addresses the characteristics of sexual networks and their association with condom use in a sample of 713 male migrants (aged 28-64) who have rural hukou (household registration) in China. Descriptive statistics, univariate analyses, and multilevel random intercept models were used to investigate the characteristics of sexual networks and their associations with condom use. We found that age, marital status, type of sex partners, support (the main help given to each sex partner by the participant), type of sexual intercourse, and stability of sexual relationships were associated with condom use. The sexual networks were mainly composed of sex partners of similar age (58.46%), unmarried people (50.53%), and regular partners (49.38%). Married male migrants were more likely to use condoms with casual partners; unmarried male migrants were less likely to use condoms in emotional and stable relationships. Variation in individual factors, sex partners, and sexual relationship characteristics contribute to participation in condomless sex by male migrants. HIV prevention strategies should target unmarried male migrants and their casual sex partners by increasing their awareness of the risk of HIV transmission and the availability of free condoms.

Sexual role identities for anal sex and anal sex positionings are often conflated in research. This study aimed to identify profiles of sexual minority men based on sexual role identity and anal sex positioning and determine correlates of these profiles including individual (i.e., HIV-status identity, condom use, partner type, sexual orientation) and cultural (i.e., same-race partnering, country of birth, acculturation) factors. A sample of Brazilian, Colombian, and Dominican immigrant sexual minority men (n=480) living in New York City were surveyed about identity and positioning at the two most recent encounters. Individual and cultural factors were examined as correlates of profiles identified through latent class analysis. Four latent classes were identified: No Labels (12%), Receptive Bottoms (16%), Insertive Tops (23%), Insertive and Receptive Versatiles (49%). We found a concordance rate of ~70% between identity and behavior. A proportion (12%) of behaviorally versatile men chose not to use sexual role labels. Living with HIV was associated with receptive and versatile classes, sex with main partners was associated with versatility, and sexual orientation differed across classes. Identity and behavior should not be used interchangeably in research or applied domains, particularly given the complexities of versatility and men who prefer to not use labels.

In Malawi, 50% of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) have had a first child by age 19 and 45% report their pregnancies as unintended or mistimed. Yet, uptake of contraception remains low. Understanding how interactions with social ties impact AGYW contraceptive use might explain low uptake beyond individual and environmental factors. Data are from Girl-Power, a study among sexually active AGYW, aged 15–24, in Malawi. We used logistic regression models to examine whether contraceptive communication and social norms (descriptive and injunctive) were associated with contraceptive use (non-barrier methods and condoms) and how associations differed across social ties (older women in the family, peers, and partners). The sample included 942 participants: 28% reported using non-barrier methods and 66% reported using condoms. Contraceptive communication with older women in the family (aOR: 1.48, 95% CI: 0.99, 2.20), peers (aOR: 3.12, 95% CI: 1.96, 4.96), and partners (aOR 5.15, 95% CI: 3.13, 8.48) was associated with non-barrier method use. Descriptive norms were associated with non-barrier methods among peers (aOR 2.57, 95% CI: 1.63, 4.96) but not among older women in the family (aOR: 1.22, 95% CI 0.80, 1.88). There were no associations among contraceptive communication, social norms, and condom use across older women in the family, peers, and partners. The findings highlight the need to consider the influence of social ties in the design of future family planning interventions and suggest that interventions that encourage interpersonal communication about contraception and target peer-based descriptive norms have the potential to impact uptake of non-barrier methods.

This study investigates sexual risk-taking among young men testing for sexually transmitted infections (STI).452 participants (aged 18-30) completed surveys concerning their backgrounds, sexual risk-taking, and experience with STI.Over one-third had used alcohol during their last sexual encounter, one-fifth were reluctant to use condoms due to concerns about erection difficulties, 14.7% had experienced sexual coercion and one-fifth reported having had contracted the most common STI, chlamydia trachomatis (CT). Older participants (aged 25-30) were more reluctant to use condoms because of erection worries and to report having had CT. Immigrant men reported more unprotected sex while men who have sex with men (MSM) were more exposed to sexual coercion than others, but less likely to use alcohol when having sex.There are important differences in sexual risk-taking within the group of young men testing for sexually transmitted infections which need to be taken into account in developing effective counselling and promotion strategies in sexual and reproductive health care. Further research on young men's sexual risk-taking is needed to broaden understanding of factors associated with young men's sexual health.

Sexual empowerment represents an important HIV intervention strategy, yet limited attention has examined the multidimensional nature of sexual empowerment in prior studies. Using a sample (n = 465) of young Black men who have sex with men (MSM), we used confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test a multifactorial operationalization of sexual empowerment. CFA indicated that a bifactor model was best suited to characterize the sexual empowerment factor (SEF), suggesting that items for four sub-constructs (self-efficacy to refuse sexual behavior, emotional support, condom use self-efficacy, and social norms on condom use) contributed to their respective constructs, while also contributing to a latent sexual empowerment construct. We then examined the association between SEF and mental health outcomes (anxiety and depression symptoms) and safer sex intentions. SEF was negatively associated with mental health outcomes and positively associated with safer sex intentions. Ultimately, individuals with greater sexual empowerment might be better equipped to develop strategies to buffer their vulnerability to HIV. We discuss the implications of SEF as a bifactor during the design and evaluation of HIV risk-reduction interventions seeking to address sexual empowerment among MSM.

This study examines health and well-being priorities among Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) in Baltimore, MD and their association with condom use. Among 148 sexually active BMSM, 43% were HIV positive. The majority ranked financial stability (68%), physical health (53%), and stable housing (59%) as top priorities. Fewer participants identified top priorities as mental health (37%), HIV prevention (35%), relationships with family (25%), and romantic partners (23%). Identifying HIV prevention (aOR: 2.25; 95% CI: 1.07-4.72) and relationship with family (aOR: 2.19; 95% CI: 0.99-4.89) as top priorities were associated with increased odds of always using condoms. Reporting stable housing as a top priority (aOR: 0.47; 95% CI: 0.22-1.00) reduced the odds of always using a condom. To increase relevance, HIV/AIDS prevention programs should address BMSM's financial, housing and physical health needs.

The aim of this qualitative study was to understand and differentiate between women's experiences of "stealthing" (non-consensual condom removal) and reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) which is defined as any deliberate attempt to control a woman's reproductive choices or interfere with her reproductive autonomy. These two experiences are often conflated within the literature, yet little is known about whether this understanding reflects women's lived reality. We recruited female participants from a large Australian metropolitan hospital who self-identified as having experienced a partner interfering with contraception or trying to force them to get pregnant or end a pregnancy against their wishes. Fourteen women (predominantly white, educated and employed) participated in an in-depth interview. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and a process of thematic narrative analysis was undertaken, focusing on the meanings women assigned to their experiences and the differences and similarities across the stories. Analysis revealed that stories about stealthing were characterized by disrespect and selfishness, whereas RCA stories highlighted control with intent. The concepts of intent and control can therefore be understood as central to defining RCA and differentiating it from stealthing. It seems likely that stealthing is primarily a form of sexual violence, as it lacks the specific reproductive intent that characterizes RCA. These findings have important implications for how RCA and stealthing are addressed and measured in research and responded to in practice.

The present study incorporated a moderated mediation model to explore the role of attitude towards condom use in mediating the link between sexual sensation seeking (SSS) and condom use and whether this indirect link was modified by HIV-related knowledge among Chinese YMSM. Survey data were collected from a cross-sectional study conducted in Wuhan, China and 373 YMSM were recruited. The mediation and moderated mediation modelling analyses were performed with the software SPSS PROCESS macro. Mediation analysis indicated that attitude towards condom use partly mediated the link between SSS and condom use (indict effect = -0.158

This qualitative study examines the drivers and barriers of condom use among Filipino men who have sex with men (MSM) using a critical realist inquiry (i.e., shared meanings, norms, and practices related to condom use). Thematic analysis was used to analyze interviews of 105 MSM participants across 21 cities in the Philippines. Key findings showed three social structures that shape how participants view sexual partners as safe (linked to non-condom use) or unsafe (linked to condom use). First, classism is linked to relative economic social position of sexual partner (lower socio-economic class as unsafe; higher socio-economic class as safe). Second, heteronormativity is linked to relationship arrangements (multiple partner as unsafe; exclusive partner as safe) and identity categories (bisexuals as unsafe; straight men are safe). Third, body-ism is linked with notions of health (looks sick as unsafe; looks healthy as safe) and appearance (not good looking as unsafe). Sexual partners perceived as good looking can be construed as either safe or unsafe. Discussion points highlight importance of understanding the cultural and material contexts of looking and sounding educated, looking healthy, looking physically attractive vis-a-vis promoting condom use.

The objective of this qualitative study was to understand Nepali female sex workers' (FSWs) condom negotiation strategies. In 2016, we conducted 30 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with street- and brothel-based FSWs residing in Kathmandu, Nepal. Participants reported that their first entry into sex work typically occurred between the ages of 17-32, and the average duration of women's involvement with sex work was 8 years. FSWs reported high knowledge and awareness of condoms, and many women had used various sexual and reproductive health services. FSWs used three types of negotiation strategies: withholding or refusing sex, providing risk information, and direct request. While some FSWs believed that these strategies were useful and successful, we found that, for some women, condom negotiation strategies were difficult to implement due to fear of abuse and threats of violence by clients. Condom negotiation was further complicated by poverty and substance abuse, and several narratives revealed the influence of gender and social norms on safe sexual practices. The findings highlight the need for improved sexual health interventions that incorporate a range of negotiation strategies and techniques (e.g., nonverbal communication and reward strategies) and aim to mitigate harm and violence against FSWs.

After Canada’s laws criminalising sex work were struck down by the Supreme Court for violating sex workers’ rights, new end-demand legislation was passed in 2014. These new laws however continue to criminalise sex work third parties (i.e. venue owners/managers) who gain material benefits, despite evidence that managed in-call venues can provide important protections for sex workers. As part of a longstanding community-based study (AESHA) in Vancouver, this analysis drew on 25 in-depth interviews with third parties who provide services for indoor sex workers. We explored how end-demand third party criminalisation shapes indoor sex workers’ working conditions, health and safety. We found that most third parties were women and current/former sex workers, problematising assumptions of third parties as exploitative male “pimps”. Third parties provided client screening, security and sexual health resources for sex workers, yet end-demand laws restricted condom availability and access to police protections in case of violence, thereby undermining sex workers’ health and safety. Our findings highlight that third party criminalisation under end-demand legislation reproduces the unsafe working conditions under the previous laws deemed unconstitutional by Canada’s highest court. Legislative reforms to decriminalise all aspects of the sex industry, including sex workers’ right to work with third parties, are urgently needed.

Young women in Australia disproportionately experience unintended pregnancy and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). As the promotion of highly effective pregnancy prevention methods such as long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) increases, concurrent use of condoms with LARC remains optimal for pregnancy and STI prevention. There is little data exploring condom use behaviour in young Australian women using LARC. In this qualitative study we interviewed twenty women using LARC about their experiences of making decisions regarding condom use. We used inductive thematic analysis to identify factors influencing participant decision-making. We found that while LARC had an impact on condom use and sexual practices, decisions regarding condom use were influenced by multiple factors including mood, menstrual changes related to LARC, and relationship dynamics. Participants' views of 'safe sex' extended beyond pregnancy and STI protection, to include desired outcomes such as pleasure, consent and communication. Access to STI testing and treatment was key to how participants managed STI risk. Findings highlight the need for a more comprehensive approach to safer sex health promotion, and the importance of ensuring STI testing and treatment services continue to be available and accessible to all young people.

Liangshan Prefecture, the highest HIV-affected epidemic region in China, has more than 2.5 million Yi people. We firstly investigated the sexual behaviors and the related social determinants of health for HIV infection in Yi women of childbearing age in this area. A total of 800 Yi women of childbearing age were enrolled. Path analysis of the risk factors revealed that casual sex (0.152) and number of sex partners (0.152) were directly associated with HIV infection. Furthermore, education level (0.057), out-migrating for work (0.032), sense of self-worth (0.024) and number of sex partners (0.079) were indirectly related to HIV infection and mediated by casual sex and multiple sexual partners. The epidemic of HIV infection among Yi women of childbearing age in Liangshan Prefecture is serious, future promotion should increase their knowledge about condom and modify their perceptions of sexual behaviors.

Objective Health decision making models propose that affective associations at both the implicit and explicit level and cognitive beliefs influence health behaviours. The current studies investigated whether affective or cognitive persuasive messages would lead to more positive implicit and explicit condom use attitudes and higher intentions among African American college women. Design Participants (Study 1 N = 109; Study 2 N = 112) explicit attitudes were assess prior to watching a short video that contained either affective (e.g., safe sex is pleasurable) or cognitive messages (e.g., latex condoms are effective in preventing HIV) in favour of condom use. Main outcome measures Following the video, participants completed the Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP), a measure of implicit attitudes, explicit measures of condom use attitudes that assessed attitudes at the overall and component level, intentions to use condoms, and interest in receiving free sample of condoms. Results Participants in the affective message condition reported more positive condom use attitudes on both the implicit and explicit measure, higher intentions to use condoms, and more interest in receiving free condoms than those in the cognitive message condition. Conclusion These results suggest that affective messages may be more effective in changing condom use attitudes, which can be used in interventions to promote protective condom use behaviours.

The study objective was to investigate factors associated with condom use among university students. During the 2013–2014 academic year, 1017 first and fourth year students from the University of Pristina temporarily seated in Kosovska Mitrovica, northern Kosovo, completed a questionnaire on sociodemographic data, HIV-related knowledge, attitudes and risky behaviours. Condom use during the most recent sexual encounter and with casual partners was reported by just over half of participants. Factors associated with condom use during the most recent sexual encounter were: being male (35.1%), using medical sources of information about HIV (35.7%), having a positive approach to HIV testing (40.1%) and a positive attitude towards sex workers (17.7%), as well as not having had a sexually transmitted infection in the past year (54.2%). Factors associated with more frequent condom use with casual partners were: being single (28.9%), not living in a rented apartment or own home (32.1%), frequenting night clubs at the weekend (35.3%), not using drugs/opioids (54.1%), not being sure whether to keep a contact after learning of their HIV-positive status (10.1%), and having stronger opinions (either positive or negative) on homosexual individuals (15.5% and 32.1%, respectively), sex workers (18.7% and 23.9%, respectively) and drug users (13.2% and 36.5%, respectively). Condom use among students in northern Kosovo was low. Strategies for HIV prevention should be focussed on promoting healthy behaviours, especially among female students and students who live alone while at university. Moreover, sexuality education should be carried out in schools and primary health care centres to provide support and enable young people to negotiate safe sex.

Objective: Male involvement in contraceptive practice remains low. Family planning and pediatric health associations have recommended an emphasis on long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) in clinical counseling with adolescents and young adults, raising concerns about the resulting adverse impact on sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates. Participants: College-attending men responded to an internet based questionnaire (n=31) and a phone-based qualitative interview (n=25). Methods: Our survey solicited attitudes toward and knowledge of contraceptive methods and assessed communication practices with sexual partners regarding use of contraception and disease prevention. Results: Knowledge about female methods of contraception was low, with a comparatively high level of knowledge about Plan B. Parents and health care providers were cited as the most helpful sources of information. Conversations about protection with sexual partners were reported by most men, due mainly to fear of unplanned pregnancy, not STI. Conclusion: Addressing couple communication and dual protection among college-attending men needs greater emphasis.

Objective: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a notable public health problem among young adults. The present study examined college students' knowledge of HIV and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in relation to their sexual health behaviors.Participants and Method: Participants included 1516 students who completed questionnaires on actual and perceived HIV knowledge, perceived PrEP knowledge, and sexual health behaviors.Results: While knowledge of HIV was high, knowledge of PrEP was low. Approximately 73% of the sample reported not using condoms at all times, and 41% reported never having been tested for HIV. Women, students at public schools, upper-year students, and students with higher HIV and PrEP knowledge were more likely to get tested for HIV than their counterparts. Knowledge of HIV and PrEP did not relate to condom use.Conclusion: These results suggest the need for increased education about PrEP and strategies to help students translate knowledge about HIV to recommended sexual health behaviors.

To determine whether sexual-risk and STI-testing behaviors differ by college student status.Sexually experienced 17- to 25-year-olds from a 2013 nationally representative panel survey that evaluated the "Get Yourself Tested" campaign. Non-students (n = 628), 2-yr (n = 319), and 4-yr college students (n = 587) were surveyed.Bivariate analyses and multiple logistic regression were used.Students were less likely than non-students to have had an early sexual debut and to have not used condoms in their most recent relationship. 4-yr students were less likely than non-students to have had multiple sexual partners. 2-yr students were less likely than non-students to have not used contraception in their most recent relationship.2-yr and 4-yr college students were less likely than non-students to engage in sexual-risk behaviors. Given potentially greater risk for STI acquisition among non-students, identification and implementation of strategies to increase sexual health education and services among this population is needed.

Condom negotiation is typically a dyadic process, influenced by a host of factors that can impact sexual health decision-making. The current paper investigated the influence of sexual arousal, relationship motivation, and partner familiarity on sexual risk taking intentions in women and men. In Study 1, 331 participants were recruited online and responded to items assessing condom use intentions. Participants higher in relationship motivation were more likely to consider perceived partner desire for condom use when considering initiating condom negotiation. In Study 2, 169 undergraduate students participated in a sexual arousal manipulation and responded to scenarios depicting sexual encounters with more or less familiar hypothetical partners. Participants reported greater sexual risk taking intentions with more (vs. less) familiar hypothetical partners. Men (vs. women) showed greater risk taking intentions overall. Higher sexual arousal was associated with increased sexual risk-taking intentions, regardless of gender. With less familiar partners, participants higher in relationship motivation showed somewhat greater concern that insisting on condom use would interfere with the sexual encounter, though concern was greatest among men for both more and less familiar partner types. These findings offer some support for the notion that a stronger orientation toward forming long-term relationships can facilitate sexual risk taking behavior.

Communication around condom use in the context of PrEP services presents a potential conundrum for patients and providers. Within the Partners Scale-Up Project, which supports integration of PrEP delivery in HIV care clinics, we interviewed 41 providers and 61 PrEP users and identified themes relating to condom messaging and use. Most providers counselled PrEP initiators to always use both PrEP and condoms, except when trying to conceive. However, others reported contexts and rationales for not emphasizing condom use. Providers reported that PrEP users were sometimes confused, even frustrated, with their insistence on using condoms in addition to PrEP. PrEP users generally regarded PrEP as a more feasible and desirable HIV prevention method than condoms, enabling increased sexual pleasure and conception, and reducing the conflict and stigma associated with condom use. Innovative approaches to condom counselling in PrEP programs are needed.

Sexual partner types and partnership dynamics have important implications for condom use. Yet most HIV prevention research conceptualises condom use as individual-level rather than dyadic-level behaviour. Evidence of a generalised HIV epidemic in urban predominantly low-income US Black heterosexual communities highlights the need for a culturally and contextually-grounded understanding of partner types, partnership dynamics and condom use from the perspective of Black heterosexual men. We conducted individual interviews with 30 self-identified men between the ages of 18 and 44, 18 (60%) of whom reported at least two partner types in the last 6 months. Key findings include: (1) 'main and casual' partner types per the HIV prevention literature; (2) three casual-partner subtypes: primary, recurrent, and one-time casuals; (3) overlapping partnership dynamics between main partners, primary-casual partners and recurrent-casual partners, but not one-time casual partners; and (4) consistent condom use reported for one-time casual partners only. The study underscores the critical need for more condom promotion messages and interventions that reflect the dyadic and culturally-grounded realities of US Black heterosexual men's sexual partner types and partnership dynamics.

Each year Canada approves about 70,000 agricultural temporary foreign worker positions. However, few studies have examined temporary foreign workers' sexual health. In this mixed-methods study, we used surveys and focus groups to explore the knowledge of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STI), sexual behaviours and the perspectives of sexual health of 100 Thai and Filipino temporary foreign workers in southwestern Ontario, Canada. The findings revealed that transnational migration had opened up social space that workers were not familiar with. Social isolation, stress and prolonged separation from spouses and partners resulted in the formation of new intimate relationships. Close to two-thirds of the 100 participants were sexually active in the twelve months prior to the study and over three-quarters did not use condoms. Many participants had misconceptions about HIV risks and safer sex practices. Few temporary workers accessed sexual health services due to language barriers, time constraints, stigma and lack of transport. As a result, many obtained medical advice and medicine through their families back home and relied on self-treatment in dealing with symptoms of genital infections. Effective sexual health promotion for temporary foreign workers must consider the complex interactive sociocultural and political processes that involve institutional practices in the local and transnational contexts.

Self-identified heterosexual men who have sex with men (HMSM) have unique sexual behaviors that may increase their risk of HIV infection. Most studies on survival sex, defined as sex trading for money, drugs, or other needs, have limited their focus to adolescents. The current study reports about the relationships between survival sex trading (SST) and high-risk behaviors in a sample of adults. Bivariate analysis shows that HIV-positive status, use of cocaine, ketamine, methamphetamine, heroin, having received drug treatment, and having received medical services are associated with SST. SST are more likely to not use condoms with partners other than their main partner, to have partners who inject drugs and are more likely to use drugs with sex. A logistic regression model included unwanted sexual touching, partner abuse, identifying as bisexual, African American, higher age, gender (women more likely), homelessness, a higher number of sexual partners, having anal sex, injection drug use, HIV seropositivity, crack use, and the likelihood of injecting drugs. The model was retested on independently collected Risk Behavior Assessment (RBA) data and showed significant relationships between survival sex and crack use, gender (women more likely), HIV positivity, identifying as bisexual, having anal sex, African American, and a higher number of sex partners. These findings make it imperative to integrate victimization counseling and HIV education into substance abuse treatment programs.

In Canada, im/migrant sex workers face stigma, health access barriers, and overlapping marginalization, with end-demand law reforms in 2014 postulated to exacerbate these inequities. Yet, little quantitative evidence on how immigration status shapes HIV/STI risk exists. Drawing on community-based longitudinal cohort data (AESHA, 2010–2018), we used multivariable confounder models with logistic regression to model 1) the independent effect of precarious immigration status (any status revocable under criminal charges: permanent residency/temporary residency/undocumented) on client condom refusal, and 2) the moderating effect of precarious status on the relationship between condom refusal and exposure to end-demand law reform (2015-present). Over this 8-year study involving 758 sex workers in Metro Vancouver 16.0% were im/migrants, of whom 57% had precarious immigration status at baseline. 16.5% of participants experienced client condom refusal. Precarious immigration was associated with increased odds of facing condom refusal (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.53, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.37–4.68), and these odds were heightened post-end-demand law reforms (AOR 4.35, 95%CI 1.21–15.66). Our findings suggest that lack of citizenship rights may enhance barriers to safer sex negotiation and increase HIV/STI risk among sex workers, highlighting the need for sex work and immigration policy reforms.

Objectives: The internet has changed the organisation of sex work. The risk of sexually transmitted infections has frequently been a research focus, but less is known about sex workers' use of contraception for pregnancy prevention. The aim of this research was to gain a better understanding of contraceptive preferences and provider interactions of online sex workers.Methods: Data were obtained from a multi-methods study of sex workers in the UK who advertise on the internet and have sexual contact with clients, particularly in the Birmingham and Solihull areas. The study comprised an online survey among 67 participants and eight qualitative interviews.Results: Reported high rates of condom use with clients led to sex workers considering pregnancy prevention to be a personal rather than an occupational issue. Disclosure of sex working to health professionals is often seen as unnecessary and/or undesirable due to concerns about stigma. A clear distinction between contraceptive needs for commercial and non-commercial partners was evident.Conclusion: Service providers need to take account of both personal and commercial needs during contraceptive consultations and avoid making assumptions based on homogeneous understandings of sex work. Encouraging disclosure of sex work to facilitate appropriate discussions may need new approaches to combat privacy and stigma concerns.

We investigated interpersonal communication generated from a successful sexual health intervention for Black college women attending a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). Guided by the integrative model of behavioral prediction and the theory of gender and power, the intervention combined point-of-access health messages with condom distribution via condom dispensers. Using a mixed-methods approach, we examined communication partners, content, mode, valence, and perceived impact. Data were gathered from surveys (N = 105) and interviews (n = 10) with young adult women at an HBCU campus, conducted three months after the intervention. The findings revealed that 43% of women engaged in interpersonal communication and 21% engaged in online interactions about the dispensers. Friends were the most common conversation partners, and the conversations were mainly about condoms and the dispensers themselves. In general, the discussions were positive, showing support for the dispensers. Regression analyses revealed positive, significant associations between interpersonal communication and two key outcomes: condom acceptability and condom intentions. Overall, this study adds to research linking health communication interventions to interpersonal communication and subsequent attitudes and beliefs. Health communication interventions should actively encourage young Black women to share health-promoting information within their social networks to extend both the reach and impact of those interventions.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China, who live in a stigmatizing environment, experience high risk of HIV infection. Recently, internet has become a popular platform for MSM in China to socialize and meet sex partners. However, little is known about how MSM socialization and stigma may associate with sexual risk behaviors among MSM in China. This cross-sectional study examined a sample of sexually active Chinese MSM recruited online (N=403) to determine the associations of MSM social life (both online and in-person) and sexual identity stigma with three types of sexual risk behaviors in the past 12 months, including condom use%, number of anal intercourse partners, and number of partners engaged in condomless anal intercourse (CAI). Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. Findings suggest that internet was a popular platform for participants to socialize and meet sex partners (69.7% met last partner via website or mobile app). More frequent use of social media was associated with higher numbers of anal intercourse partners as well as more condom use in past 12 months, but not number of CAI partners. More active in-person MSM social life was associated with higher numbers of partners in anal intercourse as well as CAI. Both perceived and enacted sexual identity stigma associated with higher numbers of CAI partners; perceived stigma was also linked to less condom use. In conclusion, social life and minority stress are relevant factors of sexual risk among MSM in China in the uptrend of internet use. The internet may be an important and promising platform for HIV prevention, and intervention efforts should consider online-based designs to promote safe sex and reduce sexual minority stigma.

Using survey data from heterosexual adult men in the U.S., the present study has two objectives. The first objective is to provide an additional data point on the overall, bivariate association between frequency of pornography consumption and condom use. The second objective is to test the theoretical proposition that the association between using pornography more frequently and using condoms less frequently will be stronger when pornography is seen as functionally important and weaker when pornography is not seen as functionally important. At the bivariate level, more frequent pornography consumption was associated with using condoms less consistently. At the level of contingency, pornography use predicted condom nonuse only when men perceived that pornography was a primary source of information about sex. When men did not perceive that pornography was a primary source of sexual information, their rate of condom use was unrelated to how much or how little they consumed pornography. Collectively, these results are consistent with the public health position that pornography can be a risk-factor for condomless sex and the theoretical position that the socializing impact of sexual media depends on the pedagogical value attributed to that media.

It is estimated that 23% of the adults and adolescents living with HIV in the United States are female. The Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funds evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to reduce HIV risk behaviors, including HIV prevention programs for people living with HIV and their partners. While EBIs have been shown to be effective in controlled research environments, there are limited data on intervention implementation in real-world settings. Women Involved in Life Learning from Other Women (WILLOW) is a four-session small-group intervention that targets heterosexual women aged 18-50 who are living with HIV. This evaluation assessed changes in participants' HIV knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and risk behaviors. A repeated measures design was used to collect participant risk behaviors at baseline, and again at three and six months post-intervention. Changes in attitudes, beliefs, and risk behaviors were assessed using generalized estimating equations. After participation in WILLOW, participants reported increased HIV knowledge, attitudes and beliefs, being more supportive of condom use, and reduced prevalence of HIV risk behaviors. Findings suggest that the WILLOW intervention can be successfully delivered by community-based organizations to reduce HIV risk behaviors among members of this high-risk population.

Understanding the psychosocial variables associated with sexual behavior is critical, particularly among high-risk individuals such as those who hook-up. It is possible body image is one of these variables. The current study aimed to examine the relationship between body appreciation and body image self-consciousness and three sexual health-related behaviors: 1) condom usage, 2) HIV screening, and 3) STI screening among a sample of adult men who have hooked up at least once in the past month (n = 243). We found that higher levels of body appreciation were related to being less likely to use condoms and higher levels of body image self-consciousness were related to being less likely to be screened for HIV and STIs. The conflicting results suggest additional research is warranted.

In this study the author address rural Guatemala's poor maternal health and HIV status by integrating an effective evidence-based HIV intervention (SEPA), with local implementing health partners to extend the capacity of comadronas (traditional Mayan birth attendants) to encompass HIV prevention. I employed a multi-method design consisting of a focus group, an interview, and participant observation to identify important factors surrounding comadrona receptivity towards expanding their capacity to HIV prevention. I analyzed data using thematic analysis and identified four categories: Project logistics, HIV knowledge and risk assessment, condom perceptions, and HIV testing perceptions. I affirm comadrona receptivity toward HIV prevention, and that will guide future cultural adaptation and tailoring of SEPA for comadrona training. I will use my results to create a prototype intervention that could be applied to other similarly underserved indigenous communities.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual delay discounting describes the decreased likelihood of condom-protected sex if a condom is not immediately available, which can be quantitatively summarised using the Sexual Delay Discounting Task (SDDT). The present studies determined the extent to which condom use likelihood as assessed by the SDDT is associated with self-reported sexual risk behaviours and demographics in two online samples of adults. DESIGN: Study 1 (n = 767) assessed demographics, sexual risk behaviour, and delay discounting, and examined relations between these variables using correlation and regression. Study 2 (n = 267) examined whether real-world instances of unprotected sex because a condom was not immediately available predicted greater sexual discounting. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: sexual delay discounting, condom use RESULTS: Both studies observed significant positive relations between sexual delay discounting and self-reported sexual risk behaviours, and found that males tended to show greater sexual discounting. In Study 2, 46% of the sample self-reported having unprotected sex because a condom was not immediately available, and these individuals showed significantly greater sexual delay discounting. CONCLUSION: These results extend prior findings by demonstrating that delay is a critical variable underlying real-life sexual risk behaviour among non-clinical samples. The SDDT is an ecologically-valid measure of these processes.

To increase linkage to and retention in antiretroviral therapy (ART) care, we piloted a community-based, ART service delivery intervention for female sex workers (FSWs). At baseline, we recruited and collected data from 617 FSWs (intervention: 309; comparison: 308) who were HIV positive and not on ART. This paper presents (1) the description of the intervention model, and (2) key descriptive and bivariate-level findings of the baseline FSW cohort. The data showed more than half of FSWs had a non-paying sex partner, and less than one-third used a condom at last sex with paying and non-paying clients, which suggest potentially high levels of HIV transmission. In addition, there is a gap in HIV testing and treatment because one-third learned about their HIV-positive status only at study enrollment, and among FSWs who had known their status for more than a month, half had not registered in care. This substantiates the importance of timely HIV diagnosis and treatment. A community-based ART program may serve as an important strategy in closing the HIV care and treatment gap for FSWs.

Few studies have examined the relationship between inconsistent condom use and sexual partnership characteristics among people living with HIV (PLWH). The current study focused on such association and its gender differences. The study was conducted in a large hospital in South China in 2013. A total of 320 dyads (PLWH indexes and their sexual partners) were recruited from an outpatient clinic using convenience sampling. The proportion of inconsistent condom use in the last six months among female indexes was higher than that among male indexes (52.4% vs. 43.6%). Of sexual partnership characteristics, HIV seropositive status was a risk factor for inconsistent condom use for both male and female indexes (aOR = 2.32, 95%CI = 1.15∼4.66, aOR = 3.09, 95%CI = 1.10∼8.67, respectively). For male indexes, lower educational level was also a risk factor (aOR = 2.39, 95%CI = 1.23∼4.67); while having had emotionally intimate relationships was a protective factor (aOR = 0.40, 95%CI = 0.21∼0.77). For female indexes, receiving material support was a risk factor (aOR = 10.17, 95%CI = 2.13∼48.61) and receiving health-related advice was a protective factor (aOR = 0.11, 95%CI = 0.02∼0.55). Future HIV interventions for PLWH need to be gender-sensitive and include their sexual partners.

We conducted a randomized control trial to evaluate the impact of a novel technology-based intervention on HIV risks and condom use behaviors among Thai men who have sex with men (MSM). Between April 2016 and August 2017, participants aged 18 years and above, and having engaged in unprotected sex in past six months were randomly assigned to control and intervention arm, and received HIV testing at baseline, month 6 and 12. Intervention arm participants engaged in 12-monthly HIV/STI prevention educational sessions delivered via Vialogues.com. Of 76 MSM enrolled, 37 were randomized to intervention and 39 to control arm. Median age was 28 (IQR 24-32) years. Thirty-three (89.2%) intervention arm participants completed all 12-monthly Vialogues sessions. At month 12, intervention arm had higher retention rate (p = 0.029) and higher median percentage of condom use for anal intercourse (p = 0.023) versus control arm. Over the 12-month period, intervention arm reported significant reduction in self-perceived HIV risk (p = 0.001), popper usage (p = 0.002), median number of sexual partners (p = 0.003), and increased median condom use percentage (p = 0.006). Our study highlights that “Vialogues” intervention significantly reduced number of sexual partners and condomless anal intercourse rates among Thai MSM, and has positive implications for reducing epidemic among key populations.

Burgeoning research suggests that men engage in a variety of coercive and non-coercive tactics to avoid condom use (condom use resistance; CUR), suggesting a risk nexus regarding sexual risk and sexual aggression (SA). Laboratory-based research has found that acute alcohol intoxication is associated with CUR; however, no study has examined event-level associations among alcohol consumption, SA history, and CUR or the moderating effects of trait anger. Non-problem drinking young adult men who have sex with women (N = 430) completed a background survey and follow-up assessments regarding their sex events and alcohol consumption over three months. CUR was reported in 113 sex events; 6.2% of these involved SA and 40.7% involved alcohol consumption. Generalized estimating equations demonstrated that men with more severe SA histories were more likely to perpetrate CUR. Men lower in trait anger were more likely to perpetrate CUR the more they increased above their typical level of alcohol consumption, whereas men higher in trait anger were similarly likely to perpetrate CUR regardless of their alcohol consumption. Results suggest that men with greater SA histories and high trait anger are at increased risk of perpetrating CUR, and that risk of CUR increases among other men the more they increase their alcohol consumption beyond their average.

HIV testing among men is critical to ending the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, 2016/2017, we examined the uptake and determinants of HIV testing among sexually active men in Nigeria. A total of 1254 young people (15-24 years) and 7866 adults (25-49 years) were included in the analysis. We conducted binary logistic regression analyses to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and adjusted OR for testing for HIV in the last 12 months preceding the survey. Approximately 18.7% of men had tested for HIV (young people [17%] vs. adult [19%]

BACKGROUND: The CDC recommends PrEP for MSM at substantial risk of HIV acquisition, leaving clinicians unsure whether to prescribe PrEP to MSM who do not disclose HIV risk factors. In a real-world setting we followed a cohort of MSM using PrEP who during their clinical visits stated they were low-risk for HIV to assess the accuracy of their HIV risk perception. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort of MSM requesting PrEP despite reporting either 100% condom use or participation in oral sex only was followed over 13 months at a community clinic in San Francisco. Participants completed a sexual and substance use behavior questionnaire at baseline, followed by quarterly HIV/STI testing and condom use change questionnaires. RESULTS: 81 clients self-identified as low-risk for HIV (age range 22-71, 83% non-Hispanic, 17% Hispanic). The mean number of partners in the previous 12 months was 10. 80% of MSM who perceived themselves as low-risk for HIV reported at least one HIV-related risk behavior including, sex while intoxicated (38%), sex with a person of unknown HIV status (28%), injecting drugs (1%), consuming 5 or more alcoholic drinks at one sitting (40%), ecstasy (11%), and poppers (16%). Condomless sex increased to 12% at month 1, peaked at 22% at month 7, and then decreased to 6% at month 10 before increasing slightly to 8% at month 13. Rates of pharyngeal GC/CT varied from 7% at baseline to 11% at month 13, while rectal GC/CT decreased from 6% at baseline to 0% at month 13. The rate of syphilis was 1% both at baseline and at month 13, however, 11% and 15% of clients tested positive for syphilis at months 1 and 7 respectively. CONCLUSIONS: 80% of participants who perceived themselves as low risk for HIV were actually high risk. Clients’ failure to report risk factors for HIV acquisition may lead to an increasingly unacceptable proportion of unidentified MSM at risk of HIV.

Consistent condom use is still not ideal. Research showed that perceived sexual self-control is associated with greater likelihood of using condoms. However, this association seems to vary according to age and relationship agreement (i.e. non-consensual non-monogamy, NCNM vs. consensual non-monogamy, CNM).Cross-sectional study with 307 heterosexual users of a dating web site for romantically involved individuals (81.8% men;Demographic information, perceived sexual self-control, condom use frequency (casual sex partners; primary partner in the last 3 months) and relationship agreement.Independently of relationship agreement, perceived sexual self-control was positively associated with condom use frequency with casual sex partners among younger and middle age participants, but not older ones (49 years). Regarding the primary partner, a similar pattern emerged for CNM participants. In contrast, no significant association between perceived sexual self-control and condom use frequency with the primary partner emerged for NCNM individuals, regardless of age.Our findings can inform evidence-based strategies to promote consistent condom use as an effective behaviour to prevent sexually transmitted infections, especially among older and NCNM individuals.

In this qualitative study, we investigated knowledge about reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and commercial sex work among female textile workers of Surat, India. We analyzed data from three focus groups conducted with 18 women using content analysis. Participants had some knowledge about the symptoms of RTIs; however, they had limited knowledge about RTI prevention, transmission, and treatment. None used condoms consistently for RTI prevention. The women attributed economic hardship as one of the main reasons for engaging in commercial sex work. Our study is one of the first to evaluate sexual and reproductive health among female textile workers in India.
