In my opinion, the reason the image of the people's police has been harmed is that a handful of officers and rank-and-file police use force, including beatings and strong language, to extort confessions from prisoners. These few are the ones who have evoked such a strong adverse reaction from the public. Due to the persistent occurrence of such phenomena in certain localities or units, such behavior has become, as it were, a chronic ailment, giving people the mistaken impression that being taken into the public security organs means corporal punishment. Why has the use of force to extort confessions become a "chronic ailment"? I think it is mainly because, under the influence of China's feudal past, along with the practices of the recent Cultural Revolution, some officers and rank-and-file police have become used to merely extracting prisoners' oral confessions without exerting themselves to gather adequate evidence or make a thorough investigation.
