During the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching of programming for undergraduate mathematicians was moved online. This was delivered asynchronously, with students working through notes and exercises and asking for help from staff via online messages as needed. Staff delivery time was redirected from content delivery into a formal system of formative assessment, which replaced informal discussion and feedback during in-person classes. Formative tasks were submitted and feedback provided via GitHub Classroom. Students were broadly positive about the formative feedback system and mixed about the need for live delivery. Formal formative feedback highlighted that students may hold incorrect views about the accuracy of task completion, making formal formative submission an effective use of staff delivery time.

Interprofessional education is becoming a requirement for accreditation of most health profession programs, therefore it is necessary to share innovative experiences so all can learn from the successes and barriers of implementation. Faculty members from five health profession programs (medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and physical therapy) were tasked with developing a pilot interprofessional education experience focused on transitions of care. The result was a three-phase experience in which students individually completed online virtual cases, then came together for small- and large-group discussions, and concluded by working through a simulated patient discharge. Objectives centered on recognizing the individual's professional role during transitions of care, identifying barriers to transitions of care, and evaluating strategies to improve safety during a transition. Outcomes were measured using an anonymous pre and post-experience survey. Twenty-three students completed the experience and identified key themes related to their profession's role in, and barriers to a transition of care. The majority of students strongly agreed that this experience has made them more aware of the importance of interprofessional communication, and that they would recommend this pilot experience to a colleague.

This paper addresses the irruptive potentiality of language in rethinking pivotal concepts in pre-service and in-service teacher education. Drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s reconceptualization of language, we undertake a radical undoing of dominant concepts of pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment as ‘order-words’ that variously segment, delimit, and potentialize lines of subjectification and signification in professional learning settings. We argue for a speculative and affirmative engagement with the complex trajectories of teacher education in light of this post qualitative turn, focusing on how Deleuzoguattarian concepts decouple the act of teaching from the ‘teacher’ as personal subject, and resituate the event of teaching within assemblages of felt transitions and vital forces. Working through vignettes that affirm transversal alternatives for exploring how teaching ‘thinks’ through events, we conclude by considering ways that teaching approaches the immanent outside of language, or what Deleuze simply referred to as ‘a life’.

Working through the artistic and theoretical contributions of anti-fascists Franco Fortini, Bertolt Brecht and Walter Benjamin, the article explores the ways in which a world lorded over by Donald Trump and his alt-right associates mobilises a Benjaminian ‘aestheticisation of politics’ alongside a populist manipulation of popular culture. Strategies developed by Brecht in 1934 to ‘restore truth’ to Nazi speeches by Goerging and Hess are used to correct the outrages of those who are shifting the atmosphere towards demagoguery, as a speech for Trump is ‘corrected’ to reveal its elitist contempt. Fortini’s poetics of doubt are also drawn on to remind the anti-fascist intellectuals of the contradictions of their positions and the dangers of dogmatism as it has been experienced historically in the communist movement. If the question is posed, through this, of the capacities of the avant garde, it should also be noted that its attitudinal elements of pranksterism, confusionism, irony and mockery are well embedded in the fascist camp, even if the avant garde’s chief theorist, Theodore Adorno, has become the poster boy for ‘Cultural Marxism’ and ‘snowflakes’, not least through his apparent writing of all the Beatles music. Broaching cultural similarities and differences with genuine, respectful inquisitiveness is an important supervisory intervention. Broaching allows supervisors to acknowledge the relevance of cultural identities and invite supervisee dialogue. Through dialogue, supervisors are tasked with openly receiving what is said by supervisees and working through ideas to maximize the effectiveness of supervision. In this practical article, broaching as an intervention in supervision is described. The importance of clinical supervision, the intercultural nature of supervision, sample broaching prompts, and recommendations for supervisors are also included.

This article reflects on the cultural representations of the last British veterans of the Great War, who passed away several years before the centenary commemorations. Focussing on Harry Patch (1898–2009) — celebrated as the last veteran to have fought on the Western Front — the article examines the ways in which Patch has served as a signal figure. The authors pay particular attention to the rhetorical motifs and narrative tropes of the popular press, evaluating how representations of Patch positioned him as a proxy not only for the generation who fought and died but as a focal point for working through contemporary perspectives on the meaning of the Great War. In so doing, they draw attention to the highly affective nature of this engagement, arguing that the loss of these veterans has not granted a form of closure but instead moved the territory of historical struggle to a new battlefield.

This article presents clinical material involving the treatment of two patients suffering from delusional paranoia and psychosomatic disorders as the basis for investigating the significance of the body–mind border – with particular attention to the working through of body–mind dissociation. In the context of interpersonal transference-countertransference events, the authors focus on the importance of the analysand’s transference onto his own body and the analyst’s use of somatic countertransference. This position draws on the burgeoning field of secular studies as well as examples of entanglement of religion, secularism, and planning in the United States and France. We describe the use of student-generated video content to assess students' engagement with, and understanding of, problem-solving skills. In this framework, students are tasked with using technology to create videos that show them working through, and explaining solutions to, challenging calculus exercises. The videos are then posted online, accessible only to the students and instructors in the class. Such video assignments align with what recent studies have identified as effective homework practices. Indeed, results from student surveys suggest that a significantly higher level of self-regulated learning takes place in creating these videos than in completing traditional written or online homework.

For 15 years Theatre of Research (Hamburg) has been bringing together artists, scientists, citizens and children to collaborate as researchers. In this paper, we consider the FabLab as an experimental facility for research, intervention and learning. By providing a space that affords close proximity between users, producers, technologies and materials, the FabLab affords a ‘hybrid hub’ for weaving relations between these. Borrowing the metaphor of ‘the bazaar’, we argue that FabLabs, due to their open and nonregulated character, can be seen as offering what we call a ‘bizarre bazaar’ for exchange, fabrication and knowledge creation. Based on the background of our own experiences with establishing and running FabLab RUC as an experimental learning, innovation and research environment, we discuss how ‘working through materials’ enables new forms of learning and research. Bridging psychoanalysis and literature, the present paper links literary depiction of traumatic terror with our own learning from psychoanalytic experience. It identifies psychodynamic understanding at two levels: (1) at the descriptive level of traumatic experience; and (2) at the specific level of working-through. Beginning with traumatic descriptions in ancient Western accounts, represented in the Biblical book of Lamentations and by Sophocles, the paper focuses on the dynamic work of affective and cognitive emergence, highlighting a sequence of repetitive traumatic reminiscences drawn from Samuel Beckett's literary productions across a 33-year period from “The end” to “Company.” In so doing, it illustrates both the literary and therapeutic efficacy in emotional conveyance of personal narrative in achieving the necessary cohesion after traumatic experience to more effectively go on.

The aftermath of complex trauma deeply impacts one's self-organization and interpersonal relationships, often resulting in clients who present to therapy with borderline characteristics and are typically labeled as difficult to treat. Further clinical complications with paranoid features may quickly place the therapist at a loss with respect to managing perceived and/or actual threats to client safety. Using psychodynamic theories, especially Kleinian understandings of psychosis and Winnicottian approaches to early disturbance and its impact on the emergence of self, this article provides a detailed case illustration that explores how a critical reflection of countertransference as “enactment,” “communication,” and “imagination” can help the therapist to understand the client's unconscious symbolic psychic struggles and to guide treatment selections in the therapy process.

There is a noticeable paucity of clinical resources that help clinicians of color to name and navigate the multitude of challenges in working through racial, cultural, and power differences in psychotherapy with White clients. African American therapists rarely receive adequate preparation for clinical practice in identifying, addressing, and working through transference and countertransference reactions in racially mixed dyads. The author highlights the challenges she faced early in her career with addressing racial and sociopolitical differences as an African American female clinical social worker providing individual psychotherapy to her older White male client whose traumatic experience focused on racial issues.

For adopted and Looked After children with compromised early experiences, there can be troubling phantasies and anxieties associated with parental objects. These internal object relations can seriously restrict the development of secure intimate relationships with new parental figures. Adoptive parents and foster carers bear the brunt of the associated difficulties. Clinical work with the child, parents/carers, family, or network, may help processes of containment, differentiation, working through, mourning, and integration. This essay offers an overview of new scholarship on Chinese animation. It provides a survey of recent work on the emergence of a classical animation form in China and on contemporary Chinese digital animation and online video. In keeping with the range of scholarship addressed, this essay introduces a new paradigm for working through the genealogy of animation. It shows how animation, across a wide variety of materials, techniques and forms, fundamentally entails an assembling of disparate ways of constructing reality. Animation assembles (a) non-Newtonian spaces in which natural laws of physics do not hold with (b) quasi-Cartesian spaces in which historically engrained cinematic techniques for organizing space in accordance with geometric or linear perspective and scalar proportions are difficult to sustain. The author considers how treatment resistance in technology-mediated work with obsessional neurotic patients can differ from that of in-person sessions, and she then gives corresponding recommendations for clinicians. Three types of resistance are discussed—partially conscious resistance, linguistic resistance, and transferential resistance—with a focus on transferential resistance and its unconscious determinant. The transferential dynamics of obsessional neurosis are explained using the theory of Jacques Lacan, and then these dynamics are tied to manifestations of treatment resistance. The author provides case examples of technology-mediated analytic work with obsessional neurotics and highlights how resistances can be detected and worked through. Working through resistances effectively depends upon making an accurate structural diagnosis and directing the treatment accordingly, but it also rests upon being attuned to the alterations in the medium of a technology-mediated session.

This article explores how social workers deal with the ambiguity that arises from their ability to transform the private needs of individuals into issues of public concern. It is argued that the current shift towards joined-up working, which is epitomized by the creation of interorganizational networks, could encourage new opportunities for social work. These horizontal and nonhierarchical forms of cooperation serve as platforms for debate to ensure regular discussions about the causes of and potential solutions to complex societal problems. Recent work on posthegemony has sought to displace the theory of hegemony as the primary mode of understanding politics, particularly with respect to Latin America. However, this work has yet to address the history of the theory of hegemony in Latin America itself. The present article traces the history of the theory of hegemony as a reference point for Marxists in twentieth century Argentina, working through key texts from the theory’s regional introduction by Hector Agosti, through the work of Pasado y Presente, to that of Ernesto Laclau. I argue that the theory of hegemony in the Argentine context has historically served to place intellectuals and their productions at the centre of history, and has conceived of political strategy and organisation from this perspective. Understanding this limitation and its history, I conclude, will give posthegemony theory the strategic and conceptual bearings by which to surpass the problematic of hegemony.

This paper explores the challenges and developmental opportunities of working with the sexual transference in psychotherapy with adolescents. Psychoanalytic contributions investigating the nature of adolescent sexuality and the developmental move from a narcissistic organisation to a capacity to form intimate relationships are reviewed, and the question of what happens when there is a lack of containment in infancy is addressed. The way in which unintegrated sexual impulses and phantasies can invade the therapeutic relationship is further discussed through the account of the weekly psychotherapy of a 16-year-old boy who formed a powerful sexual transference to his female therapist. The paper highlights how working through the sexual transference enabled this young man to face his developmental paralysis and begin to use the therapy as an opportunity for psychic growth.

The gap between our theoretical explanations and our phenomenological descriptions in therapeutic processes is discussed. The failure to acknowledge the extent of our involvement is to be found and explained in the nature of the relationship between the bi-directional and the asymmetric levels of discourse in psychotherapy. The bi-directional level of psychotherapy consists of working through the encounter of the two subjectivities involved. The life themes of both the patient and the analyst are seen to be negotiated on the bi-directional level of the interchange, while the asymmetric level of discourse is seen to guarantee the safety and the purpose of therapy. Similarities and differences in the relational and intersubjectivist view of the level of mutual influencing are discussed.
