Abstract

This paper examines the impacts of U.S. conventional and unconventional monetary policy announcements on the volatility of six exchange rates, namely Australian dollar, British pound, Canadian dollar, Euro, Japanese yen, and Swiss franc against the U.S. dollar. Narrow windows around policy announcements and high frequency second-by-second intraday data are used in the analysis. Results show that the exchange rate volatility increases significantly in the narrow window before and after the announcements under conventional monetary policy regime. The increase in the volatility is even greater during the contemporaneous period under the unconventional regime. Dividing monetary policy announcements into expansionary and non-expansionary groups, we further find that exchange rate volatility responds stronger to the non-expansionary announcements compared to the expansionary ones under the unconventional monetary policy regime.

Abstract

We examine I know as a responding action, showing that it claims to accept the grounds of the initiating action but either resists that action as unnecessary or endorses it, depending on the epistemic environment created by the initiating action. First, in responding to actions that presume an unknowing addressee (e.g., correcting, advising), speakers deploy I know to resist the action as unnecessary while accepting its grounds. Second, in responding to actions that presume a knowing addressee (e.g., some assessments), speakers use I know to endorse the action, claiming an independently reached agreement (in this way, doing “being on the same page”). Data are in American and British English.

Abstract

This study uses a simultaneous equation model based on a three-stage least squares estimation to offer new empirical evidence that investors are hedgers or speculators during South Korea's elections. Major investor groups include individuals, securities companies, and foreigners in the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI 200) market. The results show that cash market volatility and futures market activity have lead behaviors with one another. However, the contemporaneous variables of cash market volatility and options market activity have only unidirectional causality. Most investors will trade futures and options contracts for speculating within the entire sample period. During political election periods, investors prefer to trade options contracts for hedging rather than futures contracts.

Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between foreign investors’ trading behaviour and political election events in South Korea and the effect of the relationship on the financial markets via a bivariate GARCH (1,1) model analysis. The empirical results show that the KOSPI 200 index return (total trading volumes of spot) and the derivatives volume have a negative (positive) relationship for foreign investors. South Korea shifted to a free floating exchange rate system, however, it did not have an effect on foreign investors’ trading behaviour. In particular, foreign investors showed significant decrease in trading options contracts during the parliamentary election periods and the parliamentary elections stabilized derivatives trading volatility. It is evident from the results that the presidential elections create far more financial uncertainty in comparison to parliamentary elections.

Abstract

The sequenced mitochondrial genome of the threatened alpine butterfly Parnassius nomion includes 13 protein-coding genes (ND1-6, COI-III, ATP6, ATP8, ND4, ND4L, CTYB), 2 ribosomal RNAs (12 S and 16 S), 22 transfer RNAs, which is 14,547 bp in length. Its gene order and orientation are identical to the common type found in most of other completely sequenced lepidopteran mitogenomes. All protein-coding genes are initiated by ATN codons, except for COI, which uses CGA as its start codon. Eleven PCGs use the standard TAA as their termination codon, and COI, COII use the incomplete termination codon T.

Abstract

A 45-year-old female with underlying idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) complained of acute onset of reduced vision and floaters, in both eyes, for 3 weeks. Visual acuity was 6/36 and 6/60 in the right eye and left eye, respectively. Ophthalmoscopy showed bilateral peripapillary, subhyaloid and vitreous hemorrhage. Hematological evaluation revealed moderate anemia (hemoglobin: 93 g/L) and mild thrombocytopenia (platelets: 120×10(9)/L). She was co-managed by a hematologist and ophthalmologists; she was treated medically. Follow-up care during the next 6 weeks revealed spontaneous, partially resolving hemorrhage, with improvement of visual acuity. The purpose of this case report is to highlight ophthalmic involvement of ITP in this patient, despite her only-mild thrombocytopenia, and her spontaneous recovery, despite her receiving only medical treatment.
