Asian Americans are the fastest growing and fastest aging U.S. population, and occupy both extremes of socioeconomic and health indices. Using the 2016 NYCgov dataset, multilevel logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship of poverty, acculturation and neighborhood-level variables with disability for different ethnic groups of Asian older adults (Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese) in New York City. Findings indicated that South Asian older adults had higher odds for disability compared to other ethnic groups. Living in a neighborhood with higher percentages of persons of the same ethnicity was protective for Chinese older adults only. There is an important opportunity for interprofessional collaborations through education, awareness, screening and intervening to enhance systems of care for Asian older adults. Social workers can play a pivotal role in providing key linkages to form interprofessional solutions and shared efforts to address the needs of this understudied and under-resourced population. Future research is needed to better understand how ethnic enclaves are defined, and how they can benefit different ethnic groups of vulnerable Asian older adults.

Intensive shrimp production is a potential pathway to increasing export quantity and meeting Vietnamese national export targets set for the 2020–2030 period. Vietnamese farmers need to efficiently manage their shrimp farming to compete in global markets. This study aims to investigate input- and output-specific technical and scale inefficiencies in Vietnamese shrimp farming practice and their determinants. The research used a survey among 200 shrimp farmers from Ca Mau, Kien Giang, and Soc Trang provinces in Vietnam, and applied a two-stage approach with a Russell-type (input–output) directional distance function for measuring input- and output-specific technical inefficiency, and a bootstrap truncated regression for exploring the determinants of inefficiencies. Results show that main drivers of technical inefficiencies in Vietnamese intensive white-leg shrimp farms are inappropriate management of energy (inefficiency of 32%), seed (inefficiency of 22%) and shrimp yield production (88%). Furthermore, male farmers experienced in shrimp farming, with proper training and applied plastic-lined ponds are generally better in managing pond areas, use of seed, feed, and labor. Technological innovations, better post larvae quality and their stocking management can help to improve shrimp farming performance.

This paper examines how critical thinking is perceived and transmitted in\ud higher education (HE) classrooms using two Vietnamese undergraduate\ud programmes as case studies. The analysis of semi-structured interviews\ud with teachers, supervisors and institutional leaders from both\ud programmes reveals transmission of critical thinking is impacted upon by\ud power relations from not only outside, in the form of cultural and political\ud ideologies, but also within the pedagogic discourse itself. Guided by\ud Bernstein’s concepts of pedagogic device, classification and framing, the\ud discussion centres on how organisational and pedagogic decisions on\ud critical thinking prepare Vietnamese students to think, or not, ‘the\ud unthinkable’. While teachers cannot unilaterally alter official curriculum\ud texts to make critical thinking accessible to all students, it is the former’s\ud engagement, or not, in the re-organisation of curricular texts and the\ud use of particular pedagogic practices that can bring about change.

Over the past decades, the Vietnamese government has strategically encouraged the import of the ‘Western’ curriculum through the so-called Advanced Programmes. It is envisioned that by learning from the more advanced systems such as Australia, Canada, the US, and the UK, Vietnamese universities will be able to overhaul their outdated curriculum and embark on a shortcut to the league of global rankings. Drawing on 21 interviews with Vietnamese and foreign staff and students in two Advanced Programmes imported from the US, this article reviews these programmes’ twelve-year implementation to explore the challenges arising and the roles of local academics in implementing and mediating the curriculum. The research revealed considerable challenges in imparting ‘Western’ knowledge to the local context due to ideological and practicality differences. However, it is the process through which academics mediated between the international content and local students’ needs that enables practical internationalisation of the imported curriculum.

All the lymph nodes around the wound were punctured for lymphangiography. If the extravasation was found from the lymph node, the glue N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) diluted with lipiodol (ratio of 1:4) was injected to occlude the lymphatic vessel laceration.Results: All the lymph nodes around the wound were punctured with the median number of two lymph nodes for each patient (range from one to four lymph nodes); there were three patients with two leakage points. Intranodal lymphatic embolization was performed by glue NBCA diluted 1:4 with lipiodol. Additional treatment includes sclerotherapy (n=5) and percutaneous muscular flap operation (n=1). Clinical successful was achieved in twelve patients (100%) with no major complications. One patient experienced lymphedema which was was treated by compression stockings and rehabilitation therapy.Conclusion: Intranodal lymphangiography and embolization are effective methods to treat iatrogenic lymphatic leak while all the lymph nodes around the wound should be punctured to avoid missing lesions from other lymphatic vessels.Keywords: intranodal lymphangiography, intranodal lymphatic embolization, groin lymphatic leak, lymphorrhea

We conducted a case study to assess 1) physical and mental changes; 2) self-assessments of symptoms; 3) coping strategies; and 4) adaptation to physical and mental changes by semi-structured interview survey among Vietnamese female migrant workers working in Japan under the Technical Intern Training Program. We found they experienced female-specific physical changes, and some interns' symptoms worsened because they did not consult anyone about their symptoms. We propose increasing opportunities to learn about possible physical and mental changes caused by migration and to improve health literacy, including prevention, coping, help-seeking, and consultations about health concerns among female technical interns.

BackgroundSchool violence and injury are major public health problems worldwide; however, current information on these issues in Vietnam is lacking. We aim to investigate the prevalence of violence and non-fatal injury and associated factors among Vietnamese adolescents aged 13-17 years old.MethodsWe used data from the 2019 Vietnam Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), which is a nationally representative survey developed by the World Health Organization to monitor behavioral risk factors among school-aged students. The Vietnam GSHS 2019 was conducted in 20 provinces and cities, with a sample size of 7,690 male and female students aged 13-17 years old.ResultsWe found the prevalence of violence and non-fatal injury was 14.5% and 21.4%, respectively. Common risk factors for both violence and non-fatal injuries included cigarette smoking, alcohol use, mental health problems, and living with neither parent; violence was also a risk factor for non-fatal injuries. Student older age was associated with lower odds of school violence. Parents played an important role in preventing violence among female students and non-fatal injuries in both genders.ConclusionsFuture policies should consider individual factors as well as adolescent-parent bonding, to mitigate the burden of violence and injury among in-school adolescents in Vietnam.

Many workplaces in Vietnam, such as international non-government organisations (INGOs), where Vietnamese staff collaborate with people from different cultures, have become increasingly culturally diverse and interdisciplinary. This paper is based on the findings of broader qualitative research conducted between December 2010 and November 2012 that explored young Vietnamese graduates’ experiences of working at the intersection of different cultural worlds in the context of development projects at INGOs in Vietnam. Interviewees were nineteen young Vietnamese graduates and six international directors or deputy directors. This paper discusses their experiences of working for INGOs. Young graduates developed intercultural communication skills, became empathetic with others, and reconciled disparate cultural practices. While helping local communities adapt to development projects, graduates harmoniously combined the cultural values and customs of both sides. They disseminated information, promoted mutual understanding, formed culturally relativistic attitudes, promoted cross-cultural empathy, spread international goodwill and reconciled disparate cultural practices, facilitated communication, and interacted with persons or groups of different cultures.

Therefore, we aim to evaluate medicine and traditional medicine (TM) students’ perception of the professional attributes relating to QOC for improving inter-disciplined professionalism training that promotes QOC in Vietnam.Methods: The cross-sectional study was carried on 2039 students of 6 years at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City (HUMP) from the medical and TM faculty in March, 2021. The Vietnamese American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) questionnaire (2011) was used as the survey instrument. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to confirm the validity of the scale in TM students. Mean, Min–Max, standard deviation and sample paired t-test were performed for Likert scale. The one-way ANOVA was used for inferential statistics.Results: The CFA demonstrated the validity of the Vietnamese questionnaire in measuring 4 QOC-relating professional attributes, previously found in medical students for TM students. In both faculties and across academic years, students perceived self-awareness and ensuring QOC as the leading important attribute, while social duty and professional habit as the least important attribute. Contrasting with preclinical phase, students’ perception did not differ significantly between the two faculties in their clinical years (p > 0.05).Conclusion: TM students share universal QOC-relating professional traits with medical students. Moreover, exposure to clinical environment might increase inter-disciplined agreement on importance of these attributes. However, health sciences students’ underestimation of social duty and professional habit persists throughout 6 academic years. Hidden curriculum in clinical training such as specialist-centeredness might hinder the students’ improvement in perception of these traits. Therefore, these traits should strongly be emphasized in professionalism training to decrease the effects of hidden curriculum on them.Keywords: medical professionalism, quality of care, inter-disciplined professionalism

Research addressing conflict and migration has made great strides in explaining the relationship between violence and migration. However, it commonly lacks individual-level data on exposure to war. We use survey data from the 2018 Vietnam Health and Aging Study to examine the associations between war-related violence exposure during the American War and the wartime migrations of northern Vietnamese war survivors. Using multilevel mixed-effects count models, we investigate three groups of factors influencing migration—war-related events, economic circumstances, and demographic and life course factors—to explore the relationship between war exposure and migration, inclusive of deployments, economic moves, and displacements. Our findings indicate that the effects of war exposure, socioeconomic status, and demographic characteristics diverge for different types of migration. These findings, framed within the life course and historical context, suggest the need to thoughtfully delineate both war exposures and traditional causes of migration to understand the diverse types of mobility occurring during periods of armed conflict.

This study investigates contributors to social well-being from the perspective of older migrants in Australia. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 33 participants in the 66–91-year age group, from Chinese, Vietnamese, Dutch, and German heritage backgrounds. At the time of the study, they were clients of a community service provider in Brisbane, Australia, and participated in the monthly social activities organised by the agency. Many of them also engaged in other social activities not organised by this agency. Thematic analysis of the interview transcripts identified three main contributors to participants’ social well-being: social integration through building strong connections with the ethnic community, social contribution through giving back to society, and social acceptance through assimilating into Australian society. However, the emphasis placed on these contributors was shaped by the participants’ age at migration, English language ability, and reasons for migration, as well as heritage cultural backgrounds. These findings highlight the need for tailored support to enhance social well-being among older people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Historically, Vietnamese approaches to religion are highly inclusive, with flexibly overlapping religious traditions and ritual practices built on a substratum of ancestor worship. As Vietnam was colonized and became independent, religion became politicized, institutionalized, and separated from the “secular” state, which sought to bring religious practices in line with new state orthodoxies. With a new understanding of “religion” predicated on the Christian model, Vietnam adopted a model of state-religion-society relations that emphasizes not only rights but also obligations, active cooperation between state and religion, and respect for all religions which are declared equal before the law, largely in response to international demands to incorporate the universal model of religious freedom. Yet, the Vietnamese state still perceives religion as a competing source of authority . Consequently, some religions are not considered for official recognition and their followers, such as highland ethnic minorities, are treated as sub-citizens by their own state. Occasionally, their conversion is misread by the rest of society as the rejection of Vietnamese culture. The failure to consider ethnic minorities as modern subjects and state citizens on a par with the Kinh (Vietnamese) majority prevents Vietnam from achieving full-fledged covenantal pluralism.
