Heat rejection pressure plays an important role in designing a transcritical CO2 refrigeration system, and it has an optimal value to maximize the system’s coefficient of performance (COP). With a thermodynamic simulation model, the optimal heat rejection pressure is studied in the paper for an expander cycle, as well as conventional throttle valve cycle. The effects of compressor efficiency, expander efficiency, gas cooler outlet temperature, and evaporation temperature on the optimal heat rejection pressure are analyzed. It is the first time for a transcritical CO2 expander cycle that the optimal heat rejection pressure is correlated with the gas cooler outlet temperature and the evaporation temperature at given compressor efficiency and expander efficiency. The average deviation from the correlation to simulation results is less than 1.0%. The correlation provides a guideline to system development and performance optimization of a transcritical CO2 expander cycle.

To investigate the radiosensitizing effect and mechanism of action by the natural product Paeonol on lung adenocarcinoma both in vitro and in vivo.Two lung adenocarcinoma cell lines (human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 and mouse Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell line) were chosen for this research. In order to select the experimental concentrations of Paeonol, cytotoxicity was determined using a MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. A clonogenic assay was performed to measure the radiosensitizing effects. Apoptosis was determined by the Tunel (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick and labeling) assay and flow cytometry. Protein expression was analyzed by Western blotting. To test the radiosensitizing effect in vivo, a transplanted tumor model was established.The MTT assay showed that Paeonol inhibited proliferation of cells. Paeonol concentration ranged from an IC5 (5% inhibiting concentration) to an IC20 and was used at non-toxic concentrations for subsequent experiments. The clonogenic assay showed that Paeonol enhanced the radiosensitivity of cells. Data from the Tunel assay and flow cytometry verified that Paeonol enhanced radiation-induced apoptosis. Paeonol inhibited the activation of the PI3K/AKT (Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/ Protein Kinase B) pathway and down-regulated the expression of COX-2 (Cyclooxygenase-2) and Survivin. Paeonol (1718 mg/kg) combined with 10 Gy irradiation inhibited the growth of a transplanted tumor model in vivo, resulting in the longest tumor growth time, tumor growth delay and the highest inhibition ratio when compared with the radiotherapy alone group.It is reported for the first time that Paeonol has a radiosensitizing effect on lung adenocarcinoma both in vitro and in vivo. This effect could be related to the augmentation of radiation-induced apoptosis and the inhibition of the PI3K/Akt signalling pathway and its downstream proteins: COX-2 and Survivin.

Recent studies have documented an asymmetry in the market-beta of equity Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) based on high and low Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth states, as well as in bull and bear stock markets. The asymmetry has been deemed a puzzle (Chatrath et al., 2000; Chiang et al., 2004); some previous studies explained it by describing the structural changes in REITs market and others included more variables to reduce the effect of asymmetry. What seems to be lacking, however, is a general theoretical explanation. This article provides a theoretical model in which the daily and monthly price series of REITs are separately described to explain the structure of REIT-beta and to solve this puzzle. We find there are four factors and the interaction of those determining the value of estimated beta. The results of previous studies might only be able to observe a few pieces of the nature of REIT-beta.

This article analyses investment risk in the housing market by examining volatility properties of house prices for the UK. We use both ARCH and GARCH models to estimate price conditional heteroscedasticity and find evidence of a time-varying property in the volatilities of the house price series. We then use the SWARCH model and find there are three volatility states in the price series. Our estimations suggest the UK housing markets are relatively stable and different states do not switch very often. The magnitude of high price volatility is as high as 20.99 times of the low volatility for the older housing market and 14 times of the low volatility for the new housing market. In addition, the older housing market is less efficient than the new housing market, since the impacts of events on the volatility state of the older house prices is more lasting than in new housing market.
