Commercial Chinese ink was employed to disperse pristine vapor-grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs) in aqueous suspensions via horizontal ball milling. The obtained suspension was used to fabricate conductive paper-based composites through filtration-deposition onto filter paper. It was found that the carbon black particles from the Chinese ink helped separate VGCNFs and acted as connection points between the VGCNFs, while the glue reinforced the conduction network. Thus, the VGCNF-ink/paper ternary composite showed sufficiently low sheet resistance. With merely 2.5 mg·cm−2 VGCNFs, the sheet resistance could be reduced to 4.5 Ω·sq−1. As a proof of concept, these paper-based composites were directly used as electrodes of solid-state symmetric electronic double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and the substrate for the electrodeposition of MnO2 to achieve higher electrochemical performances. The EDLCs fabricated with 2.5 mg·cm−2 VGCNFs showed a specific capacitance of 224 mF·cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA·cm−2, which was retained by 86.4% after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, thanks to the high electrical conductivity and the porous structure, the MnO2 decorated paper-based composites exhibited dramatically enhanced specific capacitance. It is believed that our finding offers an idea to directly utilize commercial Chinese ink for the fabrication of electrode materials.

Crosswinds affect vehicle driving stability and their influence increase with driving speed. To improve high speed driving stability, interdisciplinary research using unsteady aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics is necessary. The current demands of faster development times require robust virtual methods for assessing stability performance in early design phases. This paper employs a numerical one-way coupling between the two disciplines and uses a variety of realistic crosswind gust profiles for the aerodynamic simulations to output representative forces and moments on three vehicle dynamic models of different fidelity levels, ranging from a one-track model to a full multi-body dynamic model of a sports utility vehicle. An investigation on required model fidelity was conducted along with a sensitivity study to find key aerodynamic and vehicle dynamic characteristics to minimise the yaw velocity and lateral acceleration response during crosswinds. Transient aerodynamic simulations were used to model crosswind gusts at high speeds. Analysis of the forces and moments showed that rapid changing gusts generate overshoots in the yaw moment, due to the phase delay of the flow between the front and rear of the vehicle. A methodology for modelling this phase delay is proposed. The response of the vehicle was captured equally well by the enhanced model (mid-level fidelity) and the full multi-body dynamic model, while the simplest one-track model failed to emulate the correct vehicle response. The sensitivity study showed the importance of the positioning of the centre of gravity, the aerodynamic coefficient of yaw moment, wheel base, vehicle mass and yaw inertia. In addition, the axles' side force steer gradients and other suspension parameters revealed potential in improving crosswind stability.

In Japan, the government’s recommendation for the HPV vaccine has been suspended for almost 8 years. A questionnaire survey was conducted in the Tsubaki Women’s Clinic, Matsuyama, Japan, to examine responses of the mothers of girls eligible for HPV vaccine before and after their doctor provided them an informative leaflet explaining the need for cervical cancer prevention. Among the 53 mothers who admitted to imposing some preconditions before being willing to encourage their daughters’ HPV vaccination, 21 (40%) mothers became more willing to vaccinate their daughters immediately after receiving the cervical cancer prevention linkage explanation provided by their doctor, and seven of the mothers (33%) even returned to the clinic to get their daughter vaccinated during our study period. Logistical regression analysis revealed that having initial preconditions required for their daughters’ HPV vaccination was an independent variable influencing the mothers’ change of willingness to get their daughters vaccinated immediately after receiving the explanation using the leaflet. We have found that to achieve maximum effectiveness, we can use an appropriate leaflet even under suspension of the governmental recommendation. Our future efforts should be focused on those mothers who are less likely to impose preconditions on their daughter’s vaccination.

We numerically study by lattice Boltzmann simulations the rheological properties of an active emulsion made of a suspension of an active polar gel embedded in an isotropic passive background. We find that the hexatic equilibrium configuration of polar droplets is highly sensitive to both active injection and external forcing and may either lead to asymmetric unidirectional states which break top-bottom symmetry or symmetric ones. In this latter case, for large enough activity, the system develops a shear thickening regime at low shear rates. Importantly, for larger external forcing a regime with stable negative effective viscosity is found. Moreover, at intermediate activity a region of multistability is encountered and we show that a maximum entropy production principle holds in selecting the most favorable state.

A leaf spring is a simple form of spring commonly used for the suspension in wheeled vehicles. Due to their high strength to weight ratio, high stiffness, and high impact energy absorption, fiber-reinforced composite leaf springs gain considerable interest recently as a potential alternative to conventional leaf springs with relatively high weight. In the present study, a novel composite leaf spring consists of two composite face layers, and a soft and flexible viscoelastic core is proposed. Employing viscoelastic materials in structures reduces undesirable vibrations leading to fatigue and damage of structures. A numerical method is used to design and analyze composite leaf springs with a viscoelastic core using the Abaqus software package. Results are compared with those from well-known analytical methods, finite element methods, and experiments. Results show that the proposed novel composite leaf spring can withstand the stresses caused by static and impact forces, reduce post-impact vibrations, and prevent undesirable system vibrations. The viscoelastic layer increases the strain energy capacity of proposed composite leaf springs compared to conventional composite leaf springs and enhances the composite leaf spring performance against bump impact.
