The emergence of mid-twentieth-century architecture that was both modern and regional in Seattle and nearby areas of Washington State presents a singular case study demonstrating an array of influences from Asia and Latin America as well as the Pacific Coast of the United States. Let s be arbitrary integer, we introduce the notion of the matrix of type s, whose nonzero entries are the classical Horadam numbers . In this paper we consider singular case , then the Moore–Penrose inverse of the matrix is given. In the case , we obtain the Pseudoinverse of the generalized Fibonacci matrix . In addition, correlations between the matrix and the generalized Pascal matrices are discussed, and some combinatorial identities involving the Horadam numbers are derived.

This article uncovers the little-known history of Southern Television’s boat Southerner, acquired by the company and adapted into a moving camera and outside broadcast unit in the 1960s. In particular, this research explores the many functions the boat served in the production of the teen spy serial Freewheelers. Southerner represents both a singular case study and an example of how outside broadcast and location filming technologies were used with increasing frequency in the production of television drama. The trend from studio-based to location-based production has been discussed at length, though not much attention has been given to the importance of location shooting to regional representation. In this article, the determinants of health care expenditure per capita in Spanish regions are analysed. The coexistence of several models concerning the degree of spending power decentralization and financing systems makes Spain a singular case and allows us to draw conclusions relevant for other countries decentralizing their health care systems. Analysing the Spanish case also serves to show a number of pitfalls affecting econometric estimation of the effects of income and demographic structure on health expenditure. Because the reliability of parameter estimates is a key issue in the literature on the determinants of health expenditure, these potential problems should be taken into account when estimating and interpreting results.

This article explores an unusual child murder committed by a woman in Bushmanland in 1910. Mietje Bontnaal, a nineteen-year-old domestic servant, murdered Flora Ortman, the seven-year-old daughter of a shepherd. It was a domestic murder that exposed tensions amongst servants in a patriarchal farm household. The article examines the trial record and the subsequent mercy procedure. While the Judge found her guilty, he recommended her to mercy. The Minister of Justice disagreed and recommended that she hang. The Governor-General agreed with the Judge and he commuted her sentence to life imprisonment. It was extremely unusual for a woman to be executed in the Cape at this time. The murder itself raises questions of sex, violence and moral order. While the motive for the crime was irrelevant to the court's finding of guilt, it was an important factor in granting her mercy. In conclusion the article speculates about her motive, central to which was the fact that she was a slave.

Ferdinand Bac's three Mediterranean gardens constructed between 1913 and 1925 are more than a chapter in the history of horticultural design.1 They are the product of an existential conflict that reflects one of the central cultural dilemmas of the age for designers of all sorts as well as for writers: the problem of epigonism. The Workers' Party of Ireland (WP) was almost alone amongst West European communist and workers' parties in having experienced steady, if modest, electoral growth throughout the 1980s. Like other Marxist parties, it was nevertheless forced to grapple with problems of identity, ideology and strategy in the wake of the collapse of communist rule in the East. Its history marks it out as a singular case amongst such parties. The party is a recent convert to Marxism‐Leninism, and a new generation of WP leaders sought by the late 1980s to transcend that ideology's perceived limitations. Their efforts were resisted by an older leadership generation which had zealously adopted Marxism‐Leninism as a model for party‐building during the 1970s. The ensuing conflict led to a split in the WP and the creation of a new party—Democratic Left‐ by the reform‐oriented majority in March 1992.

In this report, the problem of universities‟ engagement in rural innovation in the context of Latin America is explored. This qualitative research describes the characteristics and requirements of a framework for rural innovation, here referred to as Rural System of Innovation. The Rural-SI approach is based on sustainable and new rurality criteria, and exhibits a hybrid nature between territorial (regional) and agricultural (sectoral) perspectives. Universities‟ role within such a framework is analysed under the requirements for innovation activity and rural network development. However, for universities to participate in Rural-SI they are required to develop specific characteristics that, in principle, seem very distant from their traditional roles on provision of high education and research. A research framework that maps the functions of universities‟ engagement for rural innovation within the categories of education, research and innovation is proposed. Additionally, the assumption that in order to approach an innovation role, universities could make use of the already existing capabilities in their traditional roles is stated. The empirical validation of the theoretical propositions is done by means of a singular case study on the Interdisciplinary Research Programme for Human Development in Chiapas, Mexico. This case was chosen due to the stagnation of human development that derived in the Zapatista uprising in 1994. The national, regional and institutional environments around the research programme are also presented. The report ends with a detailed analysis of the research programme under the proposed research framework and a final discussion on the reasons and guidelines for universities to commit to rural innovation.

A singular case study is described in which an elderly, immigrant woman, a total illiterate but a proficient speaker of English is taught to read to a fourth grade level in a relatively short period of time. The instructional method is described and related to Goodman's “Psycholinguistic Guessing Game Model.” Researcher observations on the positive affective results of the subject's experience are recorded.

Anatomical observations upon a teratological form of TULIPA ORIENTALIS Levier. — The author illustrates a singular case of abnormal concomimitances in Tulipa orientalis Levier, which hears six flowers on the same scape: three of these flowers are disposed in a terminal « bouquet » and three at different heights in the scape. Almost all the pistils of these flowers were tetracarpellate; one of them being greatly hypertrophic in respect of the others, and completely devoided of ovules. Very interesting for its rarity and here observed for the first time for the Tulipa genus, is the presence of a very small and almost perfect supernumerary tetracarpellate pistil, joining the normal pistil of one of the terminal flowers, and the origine of which can't be ascribed to a simple scission, but only to an evident case of multiplication as the two pistils appear distinctely independent.
