This research aimed to investigate how the video editing process professionally affected preservice teachers' reflection levels and whether it differed by the type of in-class teaching experiences (their own and expert teacher experiences). The editing procedure of video cases means selecting and combining parts from an entire recorded in-class teaching experience and adding reflective thinking on actions. Seven participants took part in the research process during a semester, with three-cycle of the video case editing procedures being applied separately to two different research groups. Both inductive and deductive content analysis procedures were applied in a total of 21 video cases edited by PTs. By editing in-class teaching experiences, PTs could deeply analyse the events and transform their reflections on the contextual features. The process facilitated PTs' professional development by identifying, noticing, and reflecting on in-class teaching experiences. PTs learned to analyse their experiences by using different types of perspectives. PTs could deeply analyse the events and transform their reflections on the contextual features. Contrary to the difficulties for PTs' reflection-in-action, the process of editing in-class teaching experiences expanded their reflection-on-action opportunities.

In the existence of multicollinearity problem in the logistic model, some important problems may occur in the analysis of the model, such as unstable maximum likelihood estimator with very high standard errors, false inferences. The Liu-type logistic estimator was proposed as two-parameter estimator to overcome multicollinearity problem in the logistic model. In the existing previous studies, the (k, d) pair in this shrinkage estimator is estimated by two-phase methods. However, since the different estimators can be utilized in the estimation of d, optimal choice of the (k, d) pair provided using the two-phase approaches is not guaranteed to overcome multicollinearity. In this article, a new alternative method based on particle swarm optimization is suggested to estimate (k, d) pair in Liu-type logistic estimator, simultaneously. For this purpose, an objective function that eliminates the multicollinearity problem, provides minimization of the bias of the model and improvement of the model’s predictive performance, is developed. Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted to show the performance of the proposed method by comparing it with existing methods. The performance of the proposed method is also demonstrated by the real dataset which is related to the collapse of commercial banks in Turkey during Asian financial crisis.

This study sought to investigate the effectiveness of the method of Kinesio taping versus classic finger splint technique on pediatric patients with PIP (proximal interphalangeal) joint sprains of the fingers. Method: This is a retrospective cohort study. Forty-nine pediatric patients with PIP joint sprains were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups, Group 1 being those treated with Kinesio taping and Group 2, those treated with splints. The area around the PIP joint was measured before and after treatment. Visual analog scale (VAS) evaluation: nighttime pain, numbness, pain at rest, and pain during activity were each separately evaluated before and after treatment. Also, flexion was measured at rest and in active motion before and after treatment. Results: The patients' periarticular measurements of the affected joint were statistically significant in both groups after treatment (p < 0.001). In the comparison between the groups, it was found that the group treated with Kinesio taping displayed a better outcome (p < 0.021). According to the VAS for PIP joint pain, it was observed that in both groups, pain at rest, pain during activity, nighttime pain, and numbness were statistically significant after treatment (p < 0.001). In the comparison of the groups, it was seen that the difference was statistically significant only in terms of nighttime pain (p < 0.013). Conclusions: The study conducted supported the literature that Kinesio taping method does not restrict the function of the extremity to which it is applied and also does not produce the complications reported in other treatment techniques. Kinesio taping was found to have a higher patient compliance and the outcomes were better in terms of edema and joint range of motion as well as night time pain when compared to the group treated with splint.

Gultac, Emre/0000-0003-1943-2199; Serbest, Sancar/0000-0003-2696-8303 WOS:000571509200016 PubMed: 30644789 Background:Here we have defined a novel technique for repairing posterior acetabular wall fractures called the "crescent technique," in which dual C-shaped reconstruction plates overlap at the distal ends and, if necessary, at the proximal ends. We also analyzed the efficacy and reliability of this method.Patients and Methods:This was a retrospective analysis of 27 patients undergoing the crescent technique. All of the fractures were treated by the senior author for a mean of 7.9 days (0-15 days) after the trauma. The mean follow-up period was 19 months (13-29 months). The clinical results were evaluated using the modified clinical grading system developed by Merle d'Aubigne and Postel, and then modified by Matta. The radiographs were graded according to the criteria described by Matta.Results:In the clinical grading, 16 (59%) of the patients were excellent and very good, 5 (19%) were good, 3 (11%) were moderate, and 3 (11%) were poor. According to the Matta radiological evaluation criteria, 19 (70%) were excellent, 4 (15%) were good, 4 (15%) were fair, and none were poor. Statistically significant consistency was seen between the clinical and radiological results (p = 0.002).Conclusions:The crescent technique is a dual plate technique modification that can provide a stable fixation. It appears to be an effective and reliable method for treating posterior wall fractures of the acetabulum.

Context:Cotinus coggygria Scop. (Anacardiaceae) leaves that were used as wound healing in traditional Balkan and Anatolian folk medicine, could be potentially effective in treating diabetic wounds.Objective: This study investigates biochemical and histological effects of ethanol extract of C. coggygria (CCE) on excision wound model in diabetic rats.Materials and methods: This study was conducted on diabetic Wistar albino rats, which were injected by a single dose (50mg/kg i.p.) streptozotocin. Afterward an excision wound model was created in all animals; diabetic control rats were applied topically simple ointment and diabetic treatment rats were applied topically 5% (w/w) ointment with CC, once a day during the experimental period. However, repaired tissue insufficiently fills the defect area or cannot meet natural hyaline tissue functions, due to fibrous structure. We investigated the effect of a combined solution of sodium hyaluronate + chondroitin sulfate (HA+CS) administered intra-articularly after subchondral drilling on newly formed cartilage in rabbits with focal osteochondral defects.Materials and methods: A total of 32 New Zealand White mature rabbits, whose weights ranged from 2.5 to 3 kg, were randomly divided into four groups. Full-thickness osteochondral defect was formed in the left-knee medial femur condyles of all rabbits. Subchondral drilling was then performed. The following treatment protocol was administered intra-articularly on knee joints on days 7, 14, and 21 after surgery: group 1, 0.3 mL combined solution of HA+CS (20 mg CS combined with 16 mg HA/mL); group 2, 0.3 mL HA (16 mg/mL); group 3, 0.3 mL CS (20 mg/mL); and group 4 (control group), 0.3 mL saline solution. In the sixth week, all animals were killed and then evaluated histopathologically and biochemically.Results: There was significant articular cartilage formation in the HA+CS group compared to the HA, CS, and control groups. Hyaline cartilage formation was observed only in the HA+CS group. Cartilage-surface continuity and smoothness were significantly higher in the HA+CS and HA groups compared to the other groups. Normal cartilage mineralization was found to be significantly higher in the HA+CS group compared to the other groups. Increased levels of VEGFA and IL-1β in synovial fluid were observed in the HA+CS group.Conclusion: After subchondral drilling, intra-articular HA-CS combination therapy is a good choice to promote better quality new cartilage-tissue formation in the treatment of focal osteochondral defects. By measuring the distances of Achilles tendon (AT) and other conventional landmarks from the mechanical axis in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the ankle, we aimed to demonstrate that, as a novel landmark which can help for correct alignment in the coronal plane, AT is a better option than other landmarks. Materials and methods: This retrospective study was done on 53 ankle MRIs that met the criteria for inclusion to the study among 158 ankle MRIs. After identification of the mechanical axis, the distances of distal landmarks, which were extensor hallucis longus tendon (EHLT), tibialis anterior tendon (TAT), dorsalis pedis artery (DPA), AT, extensor digitorum longus tendon (EDLT), and malleoli, were measured from the mechanical axis and were statistically evaluated. In this experimental study, the possibility of obtaining of fading effect to indigo dyed denim yarns via ozonation process was searched. Therefore, a novel approach was attempted for fading the denim materials in the form of yarn before weaving or garment processes. The effect of the ozone gas on the CIELab values of indigo dyed yarn specimens was statistically investigated depending on some physical properties of the yarns and application parameters of ozone gas. In addition, the effect of ozone gas on the strength performance of the yarns was investigated. The results showed that different yarn and ozone application parameters affected the fading results. Besides, the ozonation process did not have a crucial negative effect on yarn strength.

This study aimed to examine the effects of creating digital stories (DSs) on the self-confidence of foreign language education (FLE) pre-service teachers with regard to technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK). A one-group pretest/posttest experimental research design was applied, supported by a qualitative approach. A total of 71 FLE pre-service teachers created DSs on a topic from the national foreign language programme. Data were collected through a self-confidence TPACK scale, demographic questionnaire, open-ended question and observations. Results showed positive significant differences between TPACK self-confidence scores before and after DS creation. Specifically, scores on technological pedagogical knowledge and technological knowledge improved significantly. The mean scores of technological content knowledge also improved, but the change was not significant. Istanbul Strait, Bosphorus, is one of the important waterways of the world due to its combination of natural beauty, human resources, and the high number of oil-carrying tankers passing through it. A considerable increase in the number of vessels over the past decade has indicated the high potential for oil spillage and fire hazards. This study aims to determine the coastal areas that are under an oil spill/fire/explosion risk in the Istanbul Strait by using geoinformatics. Remote sensing technology, providing relatively quick and low-cost analysis of large areas, is used for classifying the shoreline and land-use activities in the fore-scene and back-scene zones followed by assigning risk scores to various GIS data layers and suitability evaluation based on the weight of each score. This qualitative case study aimed to investigate Early Childhood Education (ECE) pre-service teachers’ perception of development in their technological, pedagogical, content knowledge (TPACK) after designing educational computer games for young children. Participants included 21 ECE pre-service teachers enrolled in the course Instructional Technology and Material Design. The data were collected through focus group interviews, observations, and journals. The results indicated a perceived improvement in TPACK. Moreover, participants described initial difficulty designing educational computer games since they had limited technological knowledge (TK), design knowledge (DK), or experience designing educational computer games (TPACK). However, during the game design, specific TPACK was disseminated, and participants reported increased abilities in using technology and designing computer games for educational purposes.

This study investigated the effect of expertise-based training (XBT) on the quality of digital stories created by early childhood education (ECE) pre-service teachers. The participants of the study were 69 pre-service teachers from the ECE Department. The study was experimental, utilizing a static-group pre-test/post-test design, supported with qualitative data. Data were collected through analysis and evaluation of digital stories, open-ended questionnaire, and journals. During analysis, an independent t-test was conducted and open coding analysis was applied. The results showed that the XBT group teachers earned significantly higher scores on their digital stories than the traditional group. Moreover, the XBT group focused more on the details of digital story creation, such as emphasizing the purpose of the story during each component; choosing an appropriate tone of voice; using pictures, including characters as Pepe, Kayo, and The Smurfs; and defining key words then applying pictures accordingly.

This qualitative case study investigates how preschool teacher candidates’ perceptions about technology integration change during the technology-rich Material Design course that was based on the technology-pedagogical-content knowledge (TPACK) framework. Twelve preschool teacher candidates, enrolled in an Instructional Technology and Material Design course, participated in the study. Firstly, focus-group interviews were conducted and an open-ended questionnaire was administered. The results showed that the reasons of the preschool teacher candidates’ negative perceptions about technology integration pertained to their not knowing how to use technology and finding technology unnecessary to use in preschool teaching practice. This study aimed to investigate the effect of curriculum-generated play instruction on the mathematics teaching efficacy of early childhood education pre-service teachers. The study used a one group pre-test/post-test experimental research design, supported by a qualitative approach. The participants of the study consisted of 35 pre-service teachers in the Early Childhood Programme who were registered for a Play in Early Childhood course. At the beginning of the study, the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (MTEBI) was administered. Then the curriculum-generated play instruction, which involved pre-service teachers teaching to their classmates, was applied during the course. At the end of the 16 week study, the MTEBI was again administered. During the study, qualitative data was gathered using open-ended questionnaires and observations. This case study examined the educational software evaluation processes of pre-service teachers who attended either expertise-based training (XBT) or traditional training in conjunction with a Software-Evaluation checklist. Forty-three mathematics teacher candidates and three experts participated in the study. All participants evaluated educational software selected by the novice groups in accordance with Software Evaluation checklist. Two analysis procedures were applied: (a) similarities in rankings of the same educational software between the XBT and traditional groups using the checklist and (b) organizing common themes in the data collected through journals and in-class observations. The results showed that the expert-XBT group agreement rate was 63%, while the expert-traditional group agreement rate was 42%. Moreover, the XBT group showed a similar approach to the experts, including assessing each criterion and evaluating the software as a whole.

WOS: 000319198500003 A total of 926 nests of the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) was found in a survey conducted in the Kizilirmak delta on the Black Sea coast of Turkey in 2010. Breeding success was 3.82 young per successful nest, which is very high compared to other studies in and outside Turkey. The breeding population has increased from 125-130 pairs in 1992 to at least 870 breeding pairs in 2010 (158.5/100 km(2)). This population increase is apparently related to the increase in rice cultivation, which has more than tripled in the delta since 1992. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a problem frequently encountered by paediatric healthcare providers. Recent data suggest that extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria are an emerging cause of UTIs in non-hospitalized patients. We report our experience of ertapenem use in 50 patients with complicated UTIs, mainly pyelonephritis, caused by ESBL-producing organisms.Fifty patients aged16 y who had a complicated UTI caused by ESBL-producing organisms and who were treated with ertapenem at our hospital from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2009, were included in the study.There were 20 (40%) males and 30 (60%) females with a mean ± standard deviation age of 38.6 ± 36.9 months (range 6-156 months). Twenty-eight patients had no urological abnormality. In 40 patients ertapenem was initiated after results of microbiological cultures became available. Ertapenem was initiated empirically for 10 patients known to be colonized with ESBL-producing bacteria. Urine cultures were negative at 3.3 ± 0.7 days (range 2-5 days) after starting ertapenem treatment. The mean duration of ertapenem treatment was 7.8 ± 1.2 days (range 7-14 days). No laboratory or clinical side effects were observed.Ertapenem is promising for the culture-guided treatment of ESBL-producing Gram-negative complicated UTIs. Well-designed prospective studies are needed to define the role of ertapenem in treating complicated paediatric UTIs, especially upper UTIs.

Urban place-making requires an understanding of experiences and meanings ordinary people associate with common environments—meanings that often go back to their childhoods. This paper investigates how children's place preferences and the attributes of these places differ along a rural-urban continuum. Participatory photography was used with four groups of children (ages 9–11) living in three different municipalities of the Bodrum peninsula, Turkey—a region that has experienced major transformation over the past three decades due to tourism. In developing countries, besides high rate of urbanisation, urban areas develop spontaneously, are unplanned and/or uncontrolled, hence ecological resources cannot be intentionally allocated. Local authorities are barely able to manage the pace of urban development and its impact on the environment. This causes serious environmental problems from macro- to micro-scale. The main problem is the dichotomy between protection of the environment and sustainability in urbanisation and economic growth. In the international arena, this problem is on the agenda, but in Turkey it is overlooked. The aim of the study is to define spatial development strategies of urban areas in the framework of environmental factors and related measures that consider ecological interest and reduce urban land development costs.
